Effects of College Student Gambling Experience on the Gambling Problems (대학생의 도박성 게임 경험이 도박문제에 미치는 영향)

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study was to identify the effects of college student gambling experience on the gambling problems. Methods: The study included 260 students from four-year universities in Seoul and Gangwon Province, and collected data from March 1, 2018 to March 31, 2018. The data were analyzed with the SPSS 23.0. Results: First, gambling experience showed high frequency among males (68.5%), 21 years of age and older (45.5%), boarding house (66.1%), and two or more siblings (40.5%). Second, the gambling problem based on the experience of gambling was statistically significant in academic problem, interpersonal relationship, and gambling control. Third, the mental health of the subjects was highly correlated by interpersonal relationship, gambling recognition and academic problem. Also, academic problem was highly correlated in order of gambling control and interpersonal relationship. Fourth, effects of gambling experience on the gambling problems were identified as gambling control, interpersonal relationships, gambling awareness and mental health. Conclusion: Recognize the seriousness of the gambling problem of college students in order to solve the gambling problem, the government, communities and universities should actively promote the harmful effects of gambling and provide regular mental health. education at universities.

Testing a Model to Predict Problem Gambling in Speculative Game Users (사행성 게임 이용자의 문제도박 예측 구조모형)

  • Purpose: The purpose of the study was to develop and test a model for predicting problem gambling in speculative game users based on Blaszczynski and Nower's pathways model of problem and pathological gambling. Methods: The participants were 262 speculative game users recruited from seven speculative gambling places located in Seoul, Gangwon, and Gyeonggi, Korea. They completed a structured self-report questionnaire comprising measures of problem gambling, negative emotions, attentional impulsivity, motor impulsivity, non-planning impulsivity, gambler's fallacy, and gambling self-efficacy. Structural Equation Modeling was used to test the hypothesized model and to examine the direct and indirect effects on problem gambling in speculative game users using SPSS 22.0 and AMOS 20.0 programs. Results: The hypothetical research model provided a reasonable fit to the data. Negative emotions, motor impulsivity, gambler's fallacy, and gambling self-efficacy had direct effects on problem gambling in speculative game users, while indirect effects were reported for negative emotions, motor impulsivity, and gambler's fallacy. These predictors explained 75.2% problem gambling in speculative game users. Conclusion: The findings suggest that developing intervention programs to reduce negative emotions, motor impulsivity, and gambler's fallacy, and to increase gambling self-efficacy in speculative game users are needed to prevent their problem gambling.

A Study on the Characteristics of Youth Gambling Addiction (청소년 도박중독의 특성에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors on the characteristics of youth gambling addiction to develop the youth gambling prevention program. The data was collected by using questionnaire, from Oct 2010 to Dec 2011. Of the 2,400 surveys distributed, 2,301 were collected and 2,286 of those were used for analysis after eliminating 15 with insufficient responses. The major findings of this study can be summarized as follows. First, there were some differences on the future gambling intention and the internet addiction by gender, grade, pocket money, experience in the illegal gambling site visits and gambling experience. Students who experience in the illegal gambling site visits were represented relatively higher on the future gambling intention and the internet addiction. Second, the overall experience in the illegal gambling site visits is 6.9%, while 23.2% of the total respondents were found to be the experience of gambling. Third, the future gambling intention, irrational gambling beliefs and the internet addiction were found have positive correlation with each other.

Gender Differences in Problem Gambling of University Students and their Relationship with Health Risk Behaviors (대학생 문제도박의 성별 차이와 건강위험행동과의 관련성)

  • Objectives: This study aims to identify differences in problem gambling among Korean university students by gender and to analyze the relationship between problem gambling and health risk behaviors. Methods: With a sample of 2,026 4-year university students, a questionnaire included CPGI (Canadian Problem Gambling Index) scale and health risk behavior items was administered. Descriptive statistics, t-test, and ANOVA were performed on the data. Results: The prevalence of gambling addiction of male students(14.6%) was two times higher than that of female students(6.6%). The severity of problem gambling was higher in: smokers, those with drug use experience, heavy drinkers, and those with frequently recurring suicidal thoughts, respectively. Conclusions: This study suggests that the problem gambling of university students is a complicated and comprehensive public health problem that is related with health risk behaviors such as alcohol drinking, smoking, drug use, and suicidal thoughts. Prevention strategies and policies are suggested based on the study results.

  • Purpose: A mediated model of Korean college students' problem gambling based on Blaszczynski and Nower's pathway model is developed and tested to explore mediating roles of self-control and irrational gambling beliefs in the association between emotionally vulnerable variables and problem gambling. Methods: 273 student participants recruited from 4 universities in Seoul and Gyeonggi, Korea responded. Data were collected with a structured self-report questionnaire comprising measures of problem gambling, depression, anxiety, coping styles, irrational gambling belief, and self-control. Results: The modified research model provides a reasonable fit to the data. Depression, anxiety, reflective coping, irrational beliefs, and self-control turned out to have direct effects on problem gambling, while indirect effects were reported in some suppressive and reactive styles. These predictors account for 38% of the college students' problem gambling. Conclusion: The findings suggest that developing intervention programs for reducing depression, anxiety, irrational gambling beliefs, and increasing reflective coping and self-control are needed to prevent Korean college students'problem gambling.

Relationship between Levels of Problem Gambling and Stress among Gambling Addicts: The Multiple Mediation Effects of the Basic Psychological Needs (도박중독자의 문제도박 수준과 스트레스와의 관계: 기본심리욕구의 다중매개효과)

  • This study conducted a multiple mediation analysis using sub-factors of basic psychological needs (BPNs) as mediators in the relationship between problem gambling and stress of gambling addicts to confirm that BPNs and stress, which affect gambling addiction, may be the result of problem gambling and to find effective intervention strategies. A total of 206 adults gambling addicts were screened by using CPGI. Descriptive statistics, correlation, hierarchical regression, and mediation analysis were conducted. Hierarchical regression analysis results yielded that problem gambling and sub-factors of BPNs were significant predictors of stress when controlling for gender and debt. The sub-factors of BPNs mediated the relationship between problem gambling and stress. These results indicated that BPNs and stress are not only the causes of gambling addiction but also the results from the harmful consequences of gambling addiction. The study supported the possibility of the psychological process of "Deficits of BPNs (of gambling users) → stress (of gambling users) → problem gambling → gambling addiction (of gambling addicts) → problem gambling → Deficits of BPNs (of gambling addicts) → stress (of gambling addicts)" among the variables and provided clinical implications for problem gambling counseling. Lastly, the limitations of this study and suggestions for further study were discussed.

The Effect of Gambling Characteristics on the Future Gambling Participation Intention among Middle School Students (중학생의 도박특성이 향후 도박참여의향에 미치는 영향)

  • Recently, gambling problem of youth has seriously increased. the aim of this study is to investigate the effect of sociodemographic and gambling characteristics on the future gambling participation intention among middle school students. Analysis through chi-square test and logistic regression was conducted using data from 10,228 middle school students collected in the 2018 Survey on Youth Gambling problems given from Korea center on Gambling problems. The research findings were as follows. First, among the demographics factors, sex, grade, allowance and parents-children communication showed significant difference on future gambling participation intention. Second, among the gambling factors, awareness of gambling seriousness and spending, frequency, time, cost, chasing behavior, problem gambling level showed significant difference on future gambling participation intention. Third, grade, awareness of gambling seriousness, gambling frequency, chasing behavior, problem gambling predicted the occurrence of future gambling participation intention. Based on these results, the present study suggests the prevention and intervention of gambling problem among middle school students.

Gambling Subgroups among Korean Out-of-school Adolescents

  • Purpose: The number of Korean adolescents engaging in gambling is increasing, especially among out-of-school adolescents. This study aimed to identify patterns of gambling activities and factors related to specific subgroups of out-of-school adolescent gambling activities. Methods: This descriptive study analyzed secondary data from the 2015 Korea Youth Gambling Problem Survey, including 1,200 out-of-school adolescents. Latent class analysis was conducted to identify patterns of gambling activities. The factors related to gambling subgroups were verified with multinomial logistic regression. Results: Three latent classes of gambling activities were identified: rarely gambling (RG), immediate gain gambling (IGG), and broad gambling (BG). These subgroups differed significantly in terms of gender, age at and type of first gambling experience, number and type of gambling activities, gambling frequency, time and money spent on gambling, problem gambling severity, and motivation for gambling. Compared to the RG subgroup, both the IGG and BG subgroups were strongly associated with an older age at the first gambling experience. Conclusion: Out-of-school adolescents who first gambled at an older age and who gambled mainly in order to gain money immediately were at risk of problem gambling. Developing strategies for early screening and referral to professionals is necessary to prevent gambling problems from worsening.

The Influences of Winning Money and Gambling Environments on Problem Gambling among Adolescents in South Korea: Focusing on Gender Differences (청소년의 돈을 딴 경험과 도박 유해환경이 문제도박에 미치는 영향: 성별 비교를 중심으로)

  • This study aimed to examine the influences of winning money from betting games and gambling environments on problem gambling among adolescents in South Korea, with particular attention to gender differences in the influences. This study performed a series of regression analyses by using a sample of 14,008 adolescents from the 2015 Survey on Youth Gambling Problems. The findings are as follows. First, winning money from betting games was associated with higher likelihood of doing problem gambling among adolescents. Second, living in a neighborhood with gamblers or gambling places was associated with higher likelihood of doing problem gambling among adolescents. Third, the influence of winning money from betting games on problem gambling was more pronounced for male adolescents. Fourth, there were no gender differences in the influence of living in a neighborhood with gamblers or gambling places on problem gambling. Based on the findings, implications for addressing problem gambling among adolescents were discussed.

The Effect of Substance Use Experience on the Problem Gambling among Adolescents: Focusing on the Moderating Effects of Irrational Gambling Beliefs (청소년의 물질사용경험이 문제도박에 미치는 영향: 비합리적 도박신념의 조절효과를 중심으로)

  • The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of substance use experience with adolescents on the problem gambling and to verify moderating effect of irrational gambling beliefs. A part of data from Korea Center on Gambling Problems, in which 1,500 adolescents participated was analyzed. The research findings were as follows. First, among the demographics factors, sex, monthly allowance, among the independent variable, substance use experience and irrational gambling beliefs showed significant difference on problem gambling. Second, substance use experience and irrational gambling beliefs tended to increase problem gambling. Third, the interaction of substance use experience and irrational gambling beliefs moderated the relationship between substance use experience and problem gambling. Based on these results, this study discussed practical measures to manage substance use and to prevent problem gambling among adolescents.
