  • The objective of this study is to integrate reliability analysis into shape optimization problem using the evolutionary structural optimization (ESO) in the application example. Reliability-based shape optimization is formulated as volume minimization problem with probabilistic stress constraint under minimization max. von Mises stress and allow stress. Young's modulus, external load and thickness are considered as uncertain variables. In order to compute reliability index, four methods, i.e., reliability index approach (RIA), performance measure approach (PMA), single-loop singlevector (SLSV) and adaptive-loop (ADL), are used. Reliability-based shape optimization design process is conducted to obtain optimal shape satisfying max. von Mises stress and reliability index constraints with the above four methods, and then each result is compared with respect to numerical stability and computing time.

  • This study addresses a method for 3D reconstruction using acoustic data with heterogeneous sonar devices: Forward-Looking Multibeam Sonar (FLMS) and Profiling Sonar (PS). The challenges in sonar image processing are perceptual ambiguity, the loss of elevation information, and low signal to noise ratio, which are caused by the ranging and intensity-based image generation mechanism of sonars. The conventional approaches utilize additional constraints such as Lambertian reflection and redundant data at various positions, but they are vulnerable to environmental conditions. Our approach is to use two sonars that have a complementary data type. Typically, the sonars provide reliable information in the horizontal but, the loss of elevation information degrades the quality of data in the vertical. To overcome the characteristic of sonar devices, we adopt the crossed installation in such a way that the PS is laid down on its side and mounted on the top of FLMS. From the installation, FLMS scans horizontal information and PS obtains a vertical profile of the front area of AUV. For the fusion of the two sonar data, we propose the probabilistic approach. A likelihood map using geometric constraints between two sonar devices is built and a monte-carlo experiment using a derived model is conducted to extract 3D points. To verify the proposed method, we conducted a simulation and field test. As a result, a consistent seabed map was obtained. This method can be utilized for 3D seabed mapping with an AUV.

  • A spectrum minimizing the frequency-domain Kullback-Leibler information number has been proposed and used to modify a spectrum estimate. Some numerical examples have illustrated the KL spectrum estimate is superior to the initial estimate, i.e., the autocovariances obtained by the inverse Fourier transformation of the KL spectrum estimate are closer to the sample autocovariances of the given observations than those of the initial spectrum estimate. Also, it has been shown that a Gaussian autoregressive process associated with the KL spectrum is the closest in the timedomain Kullback-Leibler sense to a Gaussian white noise process subject to given autocovariance constraints. In this paper a corresponding conditional probability theorem is presented, which gives another rationale to the KL spectrum.

  • For the vibration control of earthquake-excited buildings, an optimal design method of integrated control system considering soil-structure interaction is studied in this paper. Interaction between soils and the base of the building is simply modeled as lumped parameters and equations of motion are derived. The equations of motion are transformed into the state space equations and the probabilistic excitations such as Kanai-Tajumi power spectral density function is introduced. Then an optimization problem is formulated as finding hybrid or integrated control systems which minimizes the stochastic responses of the building structure for given constraints. In order to investigate the feasibility of the optimization method, an example design and numerical simulations are performed with tenstory building. Finally, numerical results are compared with a conventional design case that soil-structure interaction is not considered.

  • Deterministic optimum designs that are obtained without consideration of uncertainties could lead to unrealiable designs. Such deterministic engineering optimization tends to promote the structural system with less reliability redundancy than obtained with conventional design procedures using the factor of safety. Consequently, deterministic optimized structures will usually have higher failure probabilities than unoptimized structures. This paper proposes the reliability based design optimization technique fur apressure tank considering temperature effect. This paper presents an efficient and stable reliability based design optimization method by using the advanced first order second moment method, which evaluates a probabilistic constraint for more accuracy. In addition, the response surface method is utilized to approximate the performance functions describing the system characteristics in the reliability based design optimization procedure.

  • In this study, we consider characteristics of waiting times in single-server 3-node tandem queues with a Poisson arrival process, finite buffers and deterministic or non-overlapping service times at each queue. There are three buffers: one at the first node is infinite and the others are finite. The explicit expressions of waiting times in all areas of the systems, which are driven as functions of finite buffer capacities, show that the sojourn time does not depend on the finite buffer capacities and also allow one to compute and compare characteristics of waiting times at all areas of the system under two blocking policies: communication and manufacturing blocking. As an application of these results, moreover, an optimization problem which determines the smallest buffer capacities satisfying predetermined probabilistic constraints on waiting times is considered. Some numerical examples are also provided.

  • This study presents results of aerodynamic wing optimization under uncertainties. To consider uncertainties, an alternative strategy for reliability-based design optimization(RBDO) is developed. The strategy utilizes a single loop algorithm and a sequential approximation optimization(SAO) technique. The SAO strategy relies on the trust region-SQP framework which validates approximated functions at every iteration. Further improvement in computational efficiency is achieved by applying the same sensitivity of limit state functions in the reliability analysis and in the equivalent deterministic constraint calculation. The framework is examined by solving an analytical test problem to show that the proposed framework has the computational efficiency over existing methods. The proposed strategy enables exploiting the RBDO technique in aerodynamic design. For the aerodynamic wing design problem, the solution converges to the reliable point satisfying the probabilistic constraints.

  • A new algorithm based on Genetic Algorithms is proposed f3r solving process optimization problems formulated in MINLP, GDP and hybrid MINLP/GDP. This work is focused especially on the design of the Genetic Algorithm suitable to handle disjunctive programming with the same level of MINLP handling capability. Hybridization with the Simulated Annealing is experimented and many heuristics are adopted. Real and binary coded Genetic Algorithm initiates the global search in the entire search space and at every stage Simulated Annealing makes the candidates to climb up the local hills. Multi-Niche Crowding method is adopted as the multimodal function optimization technique. and the adaptation of probabilistic parameters and dynamic penalty systems are also implemented. New strategies to take the logical variables and constraints into consideration are proposed, as well. Various test problems selected from many fields of process systems engineering are tried and satisfactory results are obtained.

  • This paper is concerned with selecting covariates to be included in building linear random effects models designed to analyze clustered response normal data. It is based on a Bayesian approach, intended to propose and develop a procedure that uses probabilistic considerations for selecting premising subsets of covariates. The approach reformulates the linear random effects model in a hierarchical normal and point mass mixture model by introducing a set of latent variables that will be used to identify subset choices. The hierarchical model is flexible to easily accommodate sign constraints in the number of regression coefficients. Utilizing Gibbs sampler, the appropriate posterior probability of each subset of covariates is obtained. Thus, In this procedure, the most promising subset of covariates can be identified as that with highest posterior probability. The procedure is illustrated through a simulation study.
