Treatment Characteristics of 1,4-Dioxane by Advanced Oxidation Process System (AOP에 의한 1,4-다이옥산의 처리 특성에 관한 연구)

  • 1,4-Dioxane is an EPA priority pollutant often found in contaminated ground waters and industrial effluents. Conventional water treatment techniques are limited to decompose this compound effectively. Therefore, an advanced oxidation process system (AOP) was used for the degradation of 1,4-dioxane. This research investigates the effect of adding oxidants, such as ozone, air, and $H_2O_2$ during the UV irradiation of 1,4-dioxane solution. In order to analyze 1,4-dioxane, a modified 8270 method, which is an improved method of U.S EPA 8720, was used. Degradation efficiencies of 1,4-dioxane by only UV irradiation at various temperatures were not significant. However, The addition of oxidants and air bubbling in the UV irradiation system for 1,4-dioxane decomposition showed the higher 1,4-dioxane degradation rate. And, during AOP treatment the tendency of TOC changes was similar to that of 1,4-dioxane decomposition rate.

GIS AND WEB-BASED DSS FOR PRELIMINARY TMDL DEVELOPMENT

  • TMDL development and implementation have great potential fur use in efforts to improve water quality management, but the TMDL approach still has several difficulties to overcome in terms of cost, time requirements, and suitable methodologies. A well-defined prioritization approach for identifying watersheds of concern among several tar-get locations that would benefit from TMDL development and implementation, based on a simple screening approach, could be a major step in solving some of these difficulties. Therefore, a web-based decision support system (DSS) was developed to help identify areas within watersheds that might be priority areas for TMDL development. The DSS includes a graphical user interface based on the HTML protocol, hydrological models, databases, and geographic information system (GIS) capabilities. The DSS has a hydrological model that can estimate non-point source pollution loading based on over 30 years of daily direct runoff using the curve number method and pollutant event mean concentration data. The DSS provides comprehensive output analysis tools using charts and tables, and also provides probability analysis and best management practice cost estimation. In conclusion, the DSS is a simple, affordable tool for the preliminary study of TMDL development via the Internet, and the DSS web site can also be used as an information web server for education related to TMDL.

  • 1,4-dioxane은 페인트, 광택제 및 코팅제의 제조시에 첨가되는 화학물질로 인간에 대한 발암 가능성과 수중에서의 지속성으로 인해 EPA priority pollutant로 지정되어 있다. 이에 최근 고도산화법을 이용한 처리가 계속적으로 연구되고 있으며, UV/$H_2O_2$ 공법을 통하여 수계에서 발견되는 난분해성 유기 오염물의 제거가 효과적인 것으로 밝혀졌다. 하지만 고도산화공정(AOP)은 다량의 에너지 소모와 산화제 투여로 인한 높은 운전비용이 현실적인 적용에 장애가 되고 있다. 한편 상대적으로 저렴한 비용으로 1,4-dioxane을 처리할 수 있다는 장점으로 인하여 생물학적 분해에 대한 많은 연구가 진행되어 왔다. 하지만, 1,4-dioxane에 대한 많은 연구들이 주로 분해미생물의 분리동정 및 회분식 분해특성에 대한 연구들 위주로 보다 실질적인 연속적 처리반응조의 운전결과들은 거의보고 되지 않고 있다. 본 연구는 Lab scale 연속처리반응조의 장기운전 후 pilot plant 현장적용에 앞서 인공폐수와 합성폐수에서의 분해효율 비교 회분식 실험을 통해 합성폐수내 생물학적 분해에 영향을 미치는 inhibitor의 영향을 확인하였으며, 미생물의 배양 조건에 따른 분해효율 비교 회분식 실험과 modeling을 통하여 현장운영 효율을 예측하였다. 이를 반영하여 추후 진행예정인 pilot plant의 현장 적용성 검토 및 최적 설계인자 도출, 장기운전에서의 효율성 증대를 목적으로 한다.

Establishment of Non-drinking Groundwater Quality Standards: General Contamination Substances (비음용 지하수 오염물질 기준설정체계 구축 연구: (2) 일반오염물질)

  • To data, there was no systematic basis for establishing the content and allowed levels of general contamination substances in the Korean groundwater quality standards for non-drinking water. Recently, use of specific procedures for deriving valid groundwater quality standards have become mandatory. This study first investigated the methodology for deriving groundwater quality standards in the European Commission (EC), considering background groundwater quality and domestic and international standards related to water quality. Furthermore, this study investigated the existing specified procedure of standards related to water quality (e.g. surface water, drinking water, and wastewater). Our findings showed that EC and Member States presented the methods for deriving groundwater threshold values for general chemicals. Finally, we have proposed the following procedures of deriving Korean groundwater quality: (1) Selection of groundwater pollutant population, (2) selection and monitoring of priority substances, (3) monitoring, (4) selection of groundwater quality standard candidates, (5) selection of new substances and values for groundwater quality standards.

Effect of Nano-Bubble on Removal of Complex Heavy Metals (나노버블이 복합중금속(구리/납) 오염물 제거에 미치는 영향 분석)

  • This paper describes a effect of nano-bubble on removal of complex heavy metals, in order to remove pollutants of soil with copper (Cu) and lead (Pb) based on column test. It was conducted column test considering inflow and fine soil contents condition, and then it was analyzed removal effect of nano-bubble on Cu and Cu/Pb. The test result showed that the removal effect of the nano-bubble was higher than that of distilled water regardless of fine soil contents in case of Cu pollutant, and the removal effect of nano-bubble on heavy metals was found to have a significant impact on Pb than Cu in case of Cu/Pb pollutants. It was also analyzed that engineering properties (like a flow path and permeability) of soil due to void ratio has influenced a significant impact the pollutants removal of nano-bubble. The test results determined that nano-bubble can be applied as a flushing agent for priority target pollutant in complex heavy metals.

Determination of the number of storm events monitoring considering urban stormwater runoff characteristics (도시지역의 강우유출수 특성 분석을 통한 적정모니터링 횟수 도출)

  • This study investigated the runoff characteristics containing NPS pollutants in urban areas and estimated the optimal number of storm events to be monitored. 13 residential areas, 8 commercial areas, 9 transportation areas and 11 industrial areas were selected to be monitored located in urban areas. Monitoring was performed from 2008 to 2016 with a total of 632 rainfall events. As a result, it was found that commercial area needs priority NPS management compared to other landuses because the commercial area has high runoff coefficient and NPS pollutant EMC compared with other landuses. The annual monitoring frequency for each landuse was estimated to be 11 to 14 times for industrial area, 12 to 14 times for transportation area, 11 to 13 times for commercial area and 22 to 25 times for residential area. Even with the use of accumulated monitoring data for several years, there is still high probability of uncertainty due to high error in some pollutant items, and it is necessary to establish monitoring know-how and data accumulation to reduce errors by continuous monitoring.

Assessment of Technology-Based Industrial Wastewater Effluent Limitations and Standards for the Application in Domestic Industries ( I ) : Case-study, Applying TBELs in US (처리기술에 근거한 산업폐수 배출허용기준 국내 적용성 연구( I ) : 미국 TBELs 적용사례 검토)

  • Technology-Based Effluent Limitations (TBELs) is a permit limits for a pollutant that is based on the capability of a treatment technology to reduce the pollutant to a certain concentration. Widely practiced for regulations of industrial wastewater in US, TBELs has been accepted as an effective means that can achieve balanced goals between complete elimination of pollutants discharge and economic feasibility for industries. The review of TBELs application in US and the applicability of TBELs to the domestic industry categories was given in three papers. In the first paper, the development and practices of TBELs in US were reviewed including case studies. The developments of TBELs in US in the four major categories, the metal products & machinery, the petroleum refining, the porcelain enameling and the meat & poultry products were reviewed. The applicability of TBELs to the domestic industrial categories was also assessed. In the second paper, the pollution loads analysis for domestic industrial wastewater was conducted based on risk assessment indicator using Toxic Weighting Factors (TWFs). This is an essential part to determine the priority of TBELs application for the domestic industrial categories. In the last paper, the application of TBELs to the domestic industries was demonstrated through a case-study for the pulp/paper/paperboard category. Direct application of TBELs of US into the Korean regulation system may not be desirable because the specific goals and the environment for the regulations for the two countries may not be identical. For example, unlike US, Korea does not adopt the individual permit system for pollution sources. However, among the unproductive and exhaustive controversies over the uniform regulations regardless of the industrial categories in Korea, the introduction of the principles of TBELs are inevitable and more extensive study for applications of TBELs optimized for Korean regulation system will be necessary.

Study of the Separation and Elution Behavior of Phenols as Priority Pollutants in Reversed Phase Liquid Chromatography (역상 액체 크로마토그래피에서 유기오염물질로서의 페놀류들의 분리 및 용리거동에 관한 연구)

  • The optimum condition for the separation of priority pollutant phenols using isocratic elution has been determined. The elution behavior of eleven phenols has been also studied to interpret the retention. The reversed phase liquid chromatographic methods were performed on a ${\mu}$-Bondapak $C_{18}$ column with methanol-water, acetonitrile-water, and THF water mixtures as mobile phases. The COF method, where Snyder's solvent triangle concept was combined with a mixture-design statistical technique, was used to optimize the strength and selectivity of solvents for the separation of phenols. The optimum solvent composition, which gives a complete separation of eleven phenols, was found to be $MeOH:ACN:H_2O$ = 7:40:53. The plots of ln k' vs. -${\Delta}H^{\circ}$ and ${\Sigma}{\pi}$ of phenols showed relatively good linearities. Effect of van der Waals volume, pi-energy and hydrogen bonding on the retention of phenols were investigated. The following equation with the correlation coefficient of 0.9927 for ACN-water solvent system was obtained; $log^{k'}=2.515{\times}10^{-2}VWV-1.301{\times}10^{-1}E-3.674{\times}10^{-1}$

Assessment of the Indoor Air Quality at Schools in Ulsan (울산지역 학교의 실내공기질 평가)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the concentration of indoor air pollutants at 63 elementary schools, 41 middle schools and 51 high schools in Ulsan from the beginning of May to the end of December, 2008. To assess the indoor air quality of the various classrooms, the 8 indoor air pollutants such as $CO_2$, CO, $NO_2$, $O_3$, $PM_{10}$, TVOCs, HCHO and TBC were measured and analyzed. The mean concentrations of $PM_{10}$ and TBC in the elementary schools were significantly higher than those of middle and high schools (p < 0.01). For the HCHO, the multi-use practice rooms showed an average 1.5 times higher than general classrooms. In schools located in urban areas, the concentrations of CO, $O_3$, $PM_{10}$, HCHO and TBC were lower than in the vicinity of industrial complexes. The exceeding rate of the school air quality maintenance limits in the 6 air pollutants by law were 6.7%, 3.5%, 1.7%, 18.2%, 13.0% and 18.4% for $CO_2$, $NO_2$, $O_3$, $PM_{10}$, HCHO and TBC, respectively. Based on these results $PM_{10}$ and TBC have to be in the order of priority of need to improve the classroom air quality in elementary school of Ulsan.

  • Pentachlorophenol (PCP) is a representative compound of chlorophenol derivatives which are especially toxic and potentially carcinogenic compounds in the priority pollutant list of the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency, USA). The aim of this study was to investigate an analysis method of PCP in infinitesimal quantity retained in paper. PCP in paper was pretreated by solid phase extraction (SPE) in a phenyl cartridge. The extracted sample was acetylated or silylated and analyzed with GC/MS-SIM. The detection sensitivity of silylated PCP was improved significantly when compared with those of PCP itself and acetylated PCP. As a test specimen, an office paper and a wallpaper were used.
