  • This study investigated information acquisition from hypertext and the difference of searching behavior between adults and children. In experiment 1. we compared the amount of information acquisition from the hypertext to that of the printed text. The result showed that the performance in printed text was better than in hypertext. However. the performance of experienced (in the internet) participant showed no difference between the hypertext and the printed text. Experiment 2 compared the information-searching behavior of the adults and children in the hypertext environment. The results showed that adults performed the information-searching faster than children, yet there was no difference in the proportion of correct responses of the two groups. However. children who were more experienced in the internet and produced right answers to the 7th level questions in depth performed better and faster than the adults who were not. These results suggest that the experience in the internet is the most important factor in the searching of the wanted information.

  • By the 1990s, Database Online Searching and CD-ROM Searching have been used universally in libraries. Due to their ease of use and facilitation, it is believed that such new media searching will produce more benefits than the usual printed materials. Furthermore, from the library management's point view, the new media searching's ability to minimize holding space will be another example of the advantage. The new media searching will have ever the printed materials. However, since it Is necessary to have an objective appraisal of the cost effectiveness in the implementation and the design of the new media system, it will be compared the new media searching with the conventional searching by using printed materials at the KIEP Library and Data Bank.

The full-text databases of today is derived from by-product of electronic publication of printed materials. Now, there are also some movements toward electronic production of documents in Korea although not powerful. The present study is designed to examine the characteristics and effective retrieval method of full-text databases now commercially available through various vendors. The outline of this paper IS as follows: First, background and present situation of existing full-text database services through national and worldwide are examined. Second, free-text searching system of full-text databases is compared with controlled vocabulary system. The factors influencing on free-text retrieval performance, searching thesaurus, and hybrid or compromising system, which is using limited controlled vocabulary in conjunction with natural language for the enrichment needed for practical operation of the . system, are examined. Third, user demands through the analysis of preceding studies on 'various types of full-text databases are recognised. Fouth, application of CD-ROM full-text database to the libraries and information centers is examined as prospective resources for them. • Eoyakwonbang is a collection of prescriptions of Yuyaoyuan, an imperial medical bureau of China. While the first edition of this book does not exist at present, two versions printed in Korea, and one printed in Japan, which is the well-known Gyesasingan Eoyakwonbang have been passed down. Eoyakwonbang is a meaningful text for the history of medical communication between China, Japan and Korea, but research on the different versions and contents of Eoyakwonbang have been insufficient. Out of the 2 versions published in Korea, Eulheja Eoyakwonbang is different from Gapjinja Eoyakwonbang [another version in Korea] and Gwanjeong Eoyakwonbang of Japan, in that the prescriptions are organized, the ingredients are organized according to the amount of each ingredient for each formula, and the amounts are recorded in an accurate manner. On the other hand, the Gapjinja version has many mistakes in the characters and content. The Gwanjeong version has lesser mistakes in characters, but repeats the content error of the Gapjinja version. Eulheja was printed after correction based on the original version or unknown version from China. Gapjinja was re-printed based on the Gyesasingan version, while Gwanjeong seems to have used the Gapjinja version as its original script, as the mistakes made in the Gapjinja version are repeated in the Gwanjeong version as well.

  • In this paper we embody a system that recognizes the printed alphabet of two font types (Batang, Dodum) inputted by a black-and-white CCD camera and converts it into an editable text form. The image of the inputted printed sentences is binarized, then the rows of each sentence are separated through the vertical projection using the Histogram method, and the height of the characters are normalized to 48 pixels. With the reverse application of the basic principle of the Nonogram puzzle to the individual normalized character, the character is covered with the pixel-based squares, representing the characteristics of the character as the numerical information of the Nonogram puzzle in order to recognize the character through the comparison with the standard pattern information. The test of 2609 characters of font type Batang and 1475 characters of font type Dodum yielded a 100% recognition rate.
