  • Photographic images of the Samseong-version (三省本: Korea's Treasure No. 758-1) and the Gongin-version (空印本: Korea's Treasure No. 758-2) of Nammyeongcheon Hwasangsong Jeungdoga (南明泉和尙頌證道歌: Nanmingquan Song Zhengdaoge) were compared and analyzed to investigate the differences between the two versions. According to a report in 2012 at the time of the designation of the Gongin-version as Korea's treasure, both versions were printed from the same woodblocks. The Gongin-version is presumed to be a later print than the Samseong-version. The two versions are very similar in format and shape of border lines and characters. It is difficult to determine the differences with the naked eye, even for experts. In this study, based on the printing characteristics observed from each version through image analysis, useful evidence to determine whether it was printed using the same or different woodblocks and the order of printing was collected. As a result of careful image comparison and analysis, we concluded that the Samseong- and the Gongin-version were printed from different woodblocks, or possibly different typesetting. It was difficult to agree with the content of the report that the Gongin-version was a later print than the Samseong-version. In addition, it was noted that the Gongin-version print has characteristics quite different from the typical characteristics of woodblock printing seen in the Samseong-version. Additional investigations and follow-up studies on the printing technology used for Gongin-version print and the timing of printing are recommended.

  • Recently, the use of color data is growing fast in the area of image processing. To represent full resolution image on a limited output device, image has to be quantized an dithered. So, many dithering techniques are foundd in the printing. In this paper, we propose nonlinear quantization to consider the overlapping phenomena of neighboring printing dots and modified dot diffusion algorithm to compensate the color degradation produced in the quantization process. In the modified dot-diffusion quantization errors to be diffused are adjusted to improve both image blur and color change produced in the dot diffusion. The printed image obtained by the proposed color dithering method has higher visual quality an less color degradation than the images by conventional printing method.

  • In the present industry, three-dimensional colored shape has required for realistic prototype in rapid manufacturing. Z-corporation developed 3D printer which can color three-dimensional prototype but this process can't be adopted to other rapid prototype products and spend much time and cost coloring 3D shape. In this study a new coloring process on three-dimensional surface is proposed for realistic prototype. Three-dimensional surface coloring apparatus is composed of HP ink jet head and X-Y plotter. Distance and angle between ink jet nozzle and 3D surface are set as process parameter. Based on the experiment of process parameters, it is shown that distance and angle affected on printed image on 3D surface. Circle and line shape are chosen as standard image shape because the shape has widely used as standard in 2D printing. Consequently, the distorted image on 3D surface is corrected by transformed input image data.

  • The image quality of the color laser printer is highly related with the motion quality of actuators. However, the high precision system requires high production costs in general. The proposed design method in this paper improves image quality without increasing production costs. Using the synchronization method, time gap between exposure and transfer in organic photo conductive (OPC) drum and the period of driving gear revolution are synchronized. The proposed method is verified by computer simulations and experiment, and showed by printed images.

  • Automatic segmentation of foreground text from the background in degraded document images is very much essential for the smooth reading of the document content and recognition tasks by machine. In this paper, we present a novel approach to the binarization of degraded document images. The proposed method uses a new local contrast feature extracted based on the stroke width of text. First, a pre-processing method is carried out for noise removal. Text boundary detection is then performed on the image constructed from the contrast feature. Then local estimation follows to extract text from the background. Finally, a refinement procedure is applied to the binarized image as a post-processing step to improve the quality of the final results. Experiments and comparisons of extracting text from degraded handwriting and machine-printed document image against some well-known binarization algorithms demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient method for locating destination address block on both of machine-Printed and handwritten Korean mail piece images. The proposed method extracts connected components from the binary mail piece image, generates text lines by merging them, and then groups the text fines into nine clusters. The destination address block is determined by selecting some clusters. Considering the geometric characteristics of address information on Korean mail piece, we split a mail piece image into nine areas with an equal size. The nine clusters are initialized with the center coordinate of each area. A modified Manhattan distance function is used to compute the distance between text lines and clusters. We modified the distance function on which the aspect ratio of mail piece could be reflected. The experiment done with live Korean mail piece images has demonstrated the superiority of the Proposed method. The success rate for 1, 988 testing images was about 93.56%.

  • In this thesis, a printed score is read by using handy scanner and the recognition process is excuted in parallel, finally, on Mesh-Connected Computer. What is read is classified into certain patterns and is recognized, based on knowledge. The preprocessing steps are minimized and simple operations are used in the algorithm proposed in this thesis. The score symbols on a printed score can be recognized irrespective of their sizes but their diversity males it difficult to recognize them all, so it is programmed so as to recognize some symbols that is used necessarily and frequently. The recognized result is transformed into the MIDI standard file format. It is required to use a parallel processing system with multiprocessors because the high speed image processing is required. A digitized two-dimensional image is appropriate in processing on the SIMD Mesh-Connected Computer(MCC). Therefore, we explain this architecture and present parallel algorithm using SIMD MCC with n processors that achieves time complexity0(n).

  • In photolithography process, resolution enhancement techniques such as optical proximity correction (OPC) and phase shift mask (PSM) have been applied to improve resolution. Especially, sub-resolution assist feature (SRAF) is one of the most important OPC to enhance image quality including depth of focus (DOF). However, imaging performance of the mask could be varied with the diffraction order amplitude changed by inserting SRAF. Therefore, in this study, we investigated the imaging properties and process margin of attenuated PSM with SRAF. Reflectivities of attenuated PSMs at 13.5 nm were 3, 6, 9% and simulation was performed by $PROLITH^{TM}$. As a result, aerial image properties and DOF as well as diffraction efficiency were improved by increasing the reflectivity of attenuated PSM. Additionally, printed critical dimension variations depending on SRAF width and space error were also reduced for attenuated PSM with high reflectivity. However, SRAF could be printed when reflectivity of attenuated PSM is high enough. In conclusion, optimization of reflectivity of attenuated PSM and SRAF to prevent side-lobe from being printed is needed to be considered.

  • This paper presents an image processing-based validation method for unrecognizable numbers in severely distorted license plate images which have been degraded by various factors including low-resolution, low light-level, geometric distortion, and periodic noise. Existing vehicle license plate recognition (LPR) methods assume that most of the image degradation factors have been removed before performing the recognition of printed numbers and letters. If this is not the case, conventional LPR becomes impossible. The proposed method adopts a novel approach where a set of reference number images are intentionally degraded using the same factors estimated from the input image. After a series of image processing steps, including geometric transformation, super-resolution, and filtering, a comparison using cross-correlation between the intentionally degraded reference and the input images can provide a successful identification of the visually unrecognizable numbers. The proposed method makes it possible to validate numbers in a license plate image taken under low light-level conditions. In the experiment, using an extended set of test images that are unrecognizable to human vision, the proposed method provides a successful recognition rate of over 95%, whereas most existing LPR methods fail due to the severe distortion.
