Hangul Recognition Using a Hierarchical Neural Network (계층구조 신경망을 이용한 한글 인식)

  • An adaptive hierarchical classifier(AHCL) for Korean character recognition using a neural net is designed. This classifier has two neural nets: USACL (Unsupervised Adaptive Classifier) and SACL (Supervised Adaptive Classifier). USACL has the input layer and the output layer. The input layer and the output layer are fully connected. The nodes in the output layer are generated by the unsupervised and nearest neighbor learning rule during learning. SACL has the input layer, the hidden layer and the output layer. The input layer and the hidden layer arefully connected, and the hidden layer and the output layer are partially connected. The nodes in the SACL are generated by the supervised and nearest neighbor learning rule during learning. USACL has pre-attentive effect, which perform partial search instead of full search during SACL classification to enhance processing speed. The input of USACL and SACL is a directional edge feature with a directional receptive field. In order to test the performance of the AHCL, various multi-font printed Hangul characters are used in learning and testing, and its processing its speed and and classification rate are compared with the conventional LVQ(Learning Vector Quantizer) which has the nearest neighbor learning rule.

Digit Segmentation in Digit String Image Using CPgraph (CPgraph를 이용한 숫자열 영상에서 숫자 분할)

  • In this paper, I propose an algorithm to generate an input digit image for a digit recognition system by detecting a digit string in an image and segmenting the digits constituting the digit string. The proposed algorithm detects blobbed digit string through blob detection, designates a digit string area and corrects digit string skew using the detected blob information. And the proposed algorithm corrects the digit skew and determines the boundary points for the digit segmentation in the corrected digit sequence using three CPgraphs newly defined in this paper. In digit segmentation experiments using the image group including digit strings printed with a range of the font sizes and the image group including handwritten digit strings, the proposed algorithm successfully segments 100% and 90% of the digits in each image group.

  • In the steel & iron processing line, some characters are marked for the material management in the surface of material. This paper describes about the developed results of vision system for the recognition of material management characters, which was included in the slab image. Our vision system for the character recognition includes that CCD camera system which acquire slab image, optical transmission system which transmit captured image to the long distance, input and output system for the interface with existing system and monitoring system for the checking of recognition results. We have installed our vision system at the continuous casting line and tested. Also, we have performed inspection of durability, reliability and recognition rate. Through the testing, we have confirmed that our system have high recognition rate, 97.4%.

  • Currently, most web designers guarante high quality using bitmap graphics as fixed font size, but that has defects about file size and flexibility. Especially, to provide high quality of banner and advertise characters, after you should use a bitmap edit program, and then we should follow the method we add that program to HTML documents as bitmap data. In this study, as I show a couple of new tags in front of HTML documents, I show methods which can be presented diverse effects. When text information are stored, because we print out a screen with simple control points and outside information, it can be possible for us to express the same quality of Hangul characters like printed documents in a web browser. Regardless of the second class of platform, we can make it possible the character expression with exact character expressions and diverse effects.

Synthesis of Multiplexed MACE Filter for Optical Korean Character Recognition (인쇄체 한글의 광학적 인식을 위한 다중 MACE 필터의 합성)

  • For the efficient recognition of printed Korean characters, a multiplexed minimum average correlation energy(MMACE) filter is proposed. Proposed method solved the disadvantages of the tree structure algorithm which recognition system is very huge and recognition method is sophisticated. Using only one consonant MMACE filter and one vowel one, we recognized the full Korean character. Each MMACE filter is multiplexed by 4 K-tuple MACE filters which are synthesized by 24 consonants and vowels. Hence the proposed MMACE filter and the correlation distribution plane are divided by 4 subregion. We obtained the binary codes for the Korean character recognition from each correlation distribution subplane. And the obtained codes are compared with the truth table for consonants and vowels in computer. We can recognize the full Korean characters when substitute the corresponded consonant or vowel font of the consistent code to the correlation peak place in the output correlation plane. The computer simulation and optical experiment results show that the proposed compact Korean character recognition system using the MMACE filters has high discrimination capability.

Recognition of Printed Hangul Text Using Circular Pattern Vectors (원형 패턴 벡터를 이용한 인쇄체 한글 인식)

  • This thesis deals with a novel font-dependent Hangul recognition algorithm invariant to position translation, scaling, and rotation using circular pattern vectors. The proposed algorithm removes noise from input letters using binary morphology and generates the circular pattern vectors. The generated circular pattern vectors represent spatial distributions on several concentric circles from the center of gravity in a given letter. Then the algorithm selects the letter minimizing the distance between the reference vectors and the generated circular pattern vectors. In order to estimate performances of the proposed algorithm, the completed Batang Hangul 2,350 letters were used as test images with scaling and rotational transformations. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm are better than conventional algorithm using the ring projection in the recognition rates of Hangul letters with scaling and rotational transformation.

The Role of Processing Fluency in Product Innovativeness Judgment

  • The metacognitive experience of the ease or difficulty with which new, external information can be processed, referred to as 'processing fluency,' has been shown to influence a wide range of human judgments including truth judgments, familiarity judgments, risk perception, evaluation, and preference (see Alter and Oppenheimer 2009 for a review). The current research explores the possibility of a consumer's product innovativeness judgment based on the difficulty of processing new information. In specific, this study examines if the inferential link between (dis)fluency-(un)familiarity can feed into the perception of innovativeness. This study also explores how a consumer's processing motivation can moderate the consumer's reliance on processing fluency in judgments and how the influence of fluency can vary depending on judgment task orders. In an experiment, participants rated a new product's innovativeness and then indicated their product attitude (or vice versa depending on the judgment task order condition) after reading a product review article that was printed in either an easy-to-read or a difficult-to-read font (for fluency manipulation). The findings show that low need for cognition individuals infer higher product innovativeness when processing product information is difficult rather than easy, consistent with the common assumption that 'new information is more difficult to process than familiar information.' The findings also suggest that once low fluency is attributed to innovativeness, it may no longer lead to a negative response to the product. High need for cognition individuals' judgments on product innovativeness are not affected by fluency. The findings also demonstrate a judgment task order effect on the use of fluency in judgments (e.g., Xu and Schwarz 2005). This study provides the first evidence that an individual's fluency experience can be used as a source of information in product innovativeness judgments especially under low processing motivation conditions. The findings can help marketers better understand the malleability of consumer judgments and perceptions of product characteristics (e.g., product innovativeness) by demonstrating an interesting interplay of processing fluency, processing motivation, and judgment task-related contextual factors.

Legibility Evaluation of Two and Three Syllable Words Used in Pesticides According to Font, Thickness, Gender, and Visual Acuity (시력, 폰트, 굵기, 성별에 따른 2음절 및 3음절 농약 제품 표시글자의 가독성 평가)

  • Safety and health related information for the proper use and handing of pesticides is usually printed on the surface of the pesticide products in the form of texts. But, the guidelines or standards for the appropriate presentation of the texts for the pesticide products are most vague or not practical. Thus, this study aimed to provide the preliminary guidelines for the text sizes based on the legibility experiments. To achieve the objective legibility evaluation experiments were conducted to test the effects of different near vision (0.6, ${\geq}0.8$), gender, font type(thick gothic-type and fine gothic-type), thickness of font(plain and bold), and number of syllables(2 and 3 syllables) in the same age group of 20s. The results showed that legibility was different according to the visual acuity (p<0.05), and no other main effects showed statistically significant effects. The 'maximum illegible size' to read at least one word correctly in all the text conditions was 2 pt when the near vision was ${\geq}0.8$, and 2 pt or 3 pt when the near vision was 0.6. The 'minimum legible size' for 100% correct answer was 9 pt for the near vision of 0.6, and 5.3 pt for ${\geq}0.8$, respectively. Mean character size does not read any discomfort in 0.6 was 15.5 pt in both male and female but male was mean 8.5 pt, female was 10 pt in ${\geq}0.8$. Considering these experimental results, it was recommended that the 16 pt or larger characters should be used the important information such as 'Pesticides' or toxicity, and the minimum character size was 9 pt for the less important information.
