  • A series of torsion shear tests were performed to study the strength characteristics of sand under various stress paths during rotation of principal stress. These results can be classified into two groups of 25cm and 40cm according to the height of specimen, and toy que was applied only in the clockwise direction. In this study, strength characteristics of sand for the principal stress ratio in torsion sheartests were investigated and their results were compared with Lade's failure criterion. And the effect for specimen was considered. From the results of tests, friction angle of sand was affected by the deviatoric principal stress ratio $b:(\sigma_2 -\sigma_s)/(\sigma_2, -\sigma_3)$Failure strength of sand was determined not by the stress paths but by the current stress state. From comparison of specimens on 25cm and 40cm height, effect of end restraint could not be found. In the test where b is over 0.5 due to extension force, necking phenomenon by the strain localization was found.

  • Photoelasticity is a useful technique for obtaining the differences and directions of principal stresses in a model. In conventional photoelasticity, the photoelastic parameters are measured manually point by point. Identifying and measuring photoelastic data is time-consuming and requires skill. The fringe phase shifting method was recently developed and has been found to be convenient for measuring and analyzing fringe data in photo-mechanics. This paper presents an experimental study on the stress distribution along a horizontal line that passes the central point of a rhombus plate made of Photoflex (i.e., type of urethane rubber). The isoclinic fringe and/or principal stress direction is constant on this horizontal line, so a four-bucket phase shifting method can be applied. The method requires four photoelastic fringes that are obtained from a circular polariscope by rotating the analyzer at $0^{\circ}C$, $45^{\circ}C$, $90^{\circ}C$ and $135^{\circ}C$. Experimental measurements using the method were quantitatively compared with the results from FEM analysis; the results from the two methods showed comparable agreement.

  • An Aquifer test was carried out on five boreholes to determine the hydrologic anisotropy and the major groundwater flow direction in the aquifer system of the study area. With an assumption of the aquifer's anisotropy and homogeneity, the major transmissivity(T(equation omitted)), the minor transmissivity( $T_{ηη}$ ), and primary tensor direction ($\theta$) for each borehole were determined from the test. Besides the boreholes BH-1, BH-4 and BH-5, the anisotropy transmissivity tensor values of BH-2 and BH-3 did not correspond with the assumption. Thereafter the values were plotted on the polar coordinate, and showed that the tensor values were out of the anisotropy ellipsoid due to the high heterogeneity of BH-2 and BH-3 comparing with the other boreholes. Therefore. the anisotropy of the aquifer was examined from BH-1, BH-4. and BH-5. In BH-1, T(equation omitted) is 171.9 $\m^2$/day. $T_{ηη}$ is $71.01\m^2$/day, and the principal tensor direction is Nl5.39$^{\circ}$E. In BH-4. T(equation omitted) is $268.2 \m^2$/day, $T_{ηη}$ / is $28.75\m^2$/day and the principal tensor direction is N7.55$^{\circ}$E. In BH-5, T(equation omitted) is $168.4\m^2$/day, $T_{ηη}$ is 66.80 $\m^2$/day, and the principal tensor direction is $N76.59^{\circ}$E. On the basis of teleview logging performed on each borehole. the principal fracture directions were revealed as $N0^{\circ}$~4$^{\circ}$E/$30^{\circ}$~$50^{\circ}$SE and $N30^{\circ}$~$80^{\circ}$W/$20^{\circ}$~$50^{\circ}$NE that are the most frequently occurred sets as well as that correspond well with the calculated transmissivity tensor.

  • This paper deals with the characteristics of strain pattern by using permanent GPS stations in Korea in terms of seismic activity and tectonics. Fourteen GPS stations involved in precise baseline vector solution and horizontal strain components were calculated using the differences of mean baseline from ten deily solutions during the time span of three years. The mean rate of maximum shear strain if 0.12 $\mu$/yr. The mean direction of principal axes of the compression is about $85^{\circ}$ N.

  • The present paper proposes design and manufacturing methods of the carbon/epoxy square grid structure with near zero-CTE in three geometrical principal directions. Bonding strength of the grid structure is examined for different bonding methods. Numerical examples show that maximum displacement of the composite grid structure is almost zero comparing with that of aluminum grid structure with same dimension under thermal loading.

  • The goal of our research is to build a text-independent speaker identification system that can be used in any condition without any additional adaptation process. The performance of speaker recognition systems can be severely degraded in some unknown mismatched microphone and noise conditions. In this paper, we show that PCA(principal component analysis) can improve the performance in the situation. We also propose an augmented PCA process, which augments class discriminative information to the original feature vectors before PCA transformation and selects the best direction for each pair of highly confusable speakers. The proposed method reduced the relative recognition error by 21%.

  • Swirling flows are related to the spiral motion in the tangential direction in addition to the axial and radial direction using several swirl generators. These type of flows are used in combustion chambers to improve flame stability, heat exchanger to enhance heat transfer coefficients, agricultural spraying machines and some vertical pipes to move slurries or transport of materials. However, only a few studies three dimensional velocity profiles in a vertical pipe have been reported. In this present paper, 3 dimension particle image velocimetry(PIV) technique was employed to measure the velocity profiles in water along a vertical circular pipe with Reynolds number from 6000 to 13,000. A tangential inlet condition was used as the swirl generator to produce the required flow. The velocities were measured with swirling flow in the water along the test section using the PIV technique.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an analytic model which can describe the behavior or concrete compressive member strengthened by CFS(Carbon Fiber Sheet) with various cross-sectional shapes such as circular. square, and octagonal and various laminate angles. The failure criterion of laminated CFS is based on Tsai-Wu failure criterion. The stress strain model of confined concrete compressive member is based on an equation proposed by Mander. The effective lateral confining pressure is considered and modified according to various cross-sectional shapes. Octagonal cross-section shows the best results in the aspect of ductility, while circular does in compressive strengthening effects. In addition, [0/0/0/0] laminate in which the direction of fiber is parallel to the direction of principal stress shows the superior strength and ductility than other laminates. The analytic results show that strength and ductility of the analytic model depend on the cross-sectional shapes as well as the laminate angles.

  • Ultrasonic testing uses the directivity of the ultrasonic wave, which propagates in on direction. The directivity is expressed as the relationship between the propagate direction and its sound pressure. The directivity of an ultrasonic wave is related to the choice of probe arrangement, testing sensitivity and scanning pitch and correct measurement of defect size and location. This paper describes on the directivity measurement of ultrasonic wave using the visualization method. The directivity of shear wave emitted from the angle beam transducer were constant during propagation. The difference of directivity was existed between 2 MHz and 4 MHz angle beam transducers. When these experimental results were compared with the theory which was based on the continuous wave, it showed good agreement with theoretical directivity on the principal lobe.
