Near infra-red (NIR) spectroscopy has been used for the non-invasive assessment of intact fruit for eating quality attributes such as total soluble solids (TSS) content. However, little information is available in the literature with respect to the robustness of such calibration models validated against independent populations (however, see Peiris et al. 1998 and Guthrie et al. 1998). Many studies report ‘prediction’ statistics in which the calibration and prediction sets are subsets of the same population (e. g. a three year calibration validated against a set from the same population, Peiris et al. 1998; calibration and validation subsets of the same initial population, Guthrie and Walsh 1997 and McGlone and Kawano 1998). In this study, a calibration was developed across 84 melon fruit (R$^2$= 0.86$^{\circ}$Brix, SECV = 0.38$^{\circ}$Brix), which predicted well on fruit excluded from the calibration set but taken from the same population (n = 24, SEP = 0.38$^{\circ}$Brix with 0.1$^{\circ}$Brix bias), relative to an independent group (same variety and farm but different harvest date) (n = 24, SEP= 0.66$^{\circ}$ Brix with 0.1$^{\circ}$Brix bias). Prediction on a different variety, different growing district and time was worse (n = 24, SEP = 1.2$^{\circ}$Brix with 0.9$^{\circ}$Brix bias). Using an ‘in-line’ unit based on a silicon diode array spectrometer, as described in Walsh et al. (2000), we collected spectra from fruit populations covering different varieties, growing districts and time. The calibration procedure was optimized in terms of spectral window, derivative function and scatter correction. Performance of a calibration across new populations of fruit (different varieties, growing districts and harvest date) is reported. Various calibration sample selection techniques (primarily based on Mahalanobis distances), were trialled to structure the calibration population to improve robustness of prediction on independent sets. Optimization of calibration population structure (using the ISI protocols of neighbourhood and global distances) resulted in the elimination of over 50% of the initial data set. The use of the ISI Local Calibration routine was also investigated.

A metal matrix composites(MMCs) for A16061 reinforced with silicon carbide particles is fabricated by melt-stirring method. The primary products of MMCs billets are prepared by volume fractions 5 vol% to 20 vol% and particle size $13\mu m$ to $22\mu m$.This paper will be made to examine the microstructure and mechanical properties of fabricated $SiC_p$/Al 6061 composite by melt-stirring and squeeze casting method. The MMC billets is extruded at $500^{\circ}C$ under the constant extrusion velocity $V_e$=2mm/min using curved shape die. Extrusion force, particle rearrangement, micro structure and mechanical properties of extruded composites will be investigated. The mechanical properties of primary billets manufactured by melt-stirring and squeeze casting method will be compared with extrusion specimen. The effect of volume fraction and size of the reinforcements will be studied. The increase in uniformity of particle dispersion is the major reason for an improvement in reliability due to hot extrusion with optimal shape die. Experimental Young's modulus and 0.2% offset yield strength for the extruded MMCs will be compared with theretical values calculated by the Eshelby method. A method will be proposed for the prediction of Young's modulus and yield strength in $SiC_p$ reinforced MMCs.

The plan for obtaining a good combination of strength and castability appeared feasible and the following observations were made. 1. In Al-12Mg-6.6Zn-xSi alloys, more primary $Mg_2Si$ phase formed with reduced $Al_3Mg_2$ phase, as Si content is necessary for an effective solution heat treatment because the solidus temperature is very low silicon contents. 2. A high tensile strength could be obtained in the heat-treated Al-12Mg-5.5Zn-5Si alloy attributed in the heat-treated Al-12Mg-5.5Zn-5Si alloy attributes to fine $MgZn_2$ particles that precipitated uniformly in the matrix. 3. Al-12Mg-5.5Zn-Si alloys showed excellent casting capabilities such as hot cracking resistance and fluidity compared to the reference commercial alloys. 4. The wear resistance of Al-12Mg-5.5Zn-5Si alloy was superior to that of A7075 alloy, and even higher resistance is expected if the morphology and size of primary $Mg_2Si$ phase is carefully controlled.
The solidification behavior of the squeeze cast composites of aluminum alloys reinforced with boron fiber($100{\mu}m$) and silicon carbide fibers($140{\mu}m$ and $15{\mu}m$) were investigated. Al-4.5wt%Cu and Al-l0wt%Mg were chosen for the matrix phase of the composites. In the squeeze cast specimen with high thermal difference between fiber and melt, the average secondary dendrite arm spacing(DAS) in reinforced alloy is smaller than that in unreinforced alloy. It was also observed that primary ${\alpha}$ and non-equilibrium eutectic, which seems to be penetrated and solidified at the final stage of the solidification of the matrix, are irregularly distributed around fibers. It is considered that cold fibers serve as heterogeneous nucleation site. While in the remelted and resolidified specimen without temperature difference, the DAS was not changed with reinforcement and microstructure reveals non-equilibrium eutectic with relatively uniform thickness around fibers. It might be evident the nucleation starts at interfiber region. Microsegregation decreases with the decrease in cooling rate and with reinforcement in the as-squeeze cast specimen. Al-10wt% Mg alloy shows less microsegregation than Al-4.5wt%Cu alloy.

This paper presents the development of a microsystem for whole blood purification and electrophysiological analysis of the purified cells. Magnetophoresis using continuous diamagnetic capture (DMC) was utilized for whole cell purification and electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was utilized for electrophysiological analysis of the purified cells. The system was developed on silicon and plastic substrates utilizing conventional microfabrication technologies and plastic microfabrication technologies. Using the magnetophoretic microseparator, white blood cells were purified from a sample of whole blood. The experimental results of the DMC microseparator show that 89.7% of the red blood cells (RBCs) and 72.7% of the white blood cells (WBCs) could be continuously separated out from a whole blood using an external magnetic flux of 0.2 T. EIS was used as a downstream whole cell analysis tool to study the electrophysiological characteristics of purified cells. In this work, primary cultured bovine chromaffin cells and human red blood cells were characterized using EIS. Further analysis capabilities of the EIS were demonstrated by successfully obtaining unique impedance signatures for chromaffin cells based on the whole cell ion channel activity.
The development of the frequency convertors using semiconductors devices makes it possible to control the speed of A.C. motors easily. It is now economically feasible to provide them with power at adjustble frequency using silicon-controlled rectifier (or thyristor) inverters. In such a case, in order to operate an induction motor efficiently over a wide speed range, it must be supplied from a variable frecuency source of which frequency is adjustable over the speep range of the motor. It is desired to observe the changes in characteristics as primary current, torque-speed of induction moter etc. at any optional frequncy. Although the charactheristies can be obtained by means of the conventional methods they require very complicated precedures of calcuations. The Current Diagram Method in this paper suggests a new approach to simpler calcuations of the characteristics, using the motor constants at reference frequency. The conclusions of this study are summarized as follows: (1) The equations of stator current at adjusted frequency were derived to construct graphical chart and the current circle required for the Current Diagrm Method. (2) The radius, center of the current circle and the vector locus, the basis for calculating the characteristics, at any desired frequency could be easily determined with the aid of both the derived graphical chart and current circle at reference frequency. (3) The method was shown to be applicable to the various types of 3-phase induction motors and also dealt with its application to the split-phase, condenser motors.

Silica particle formation and growth process including chemical reaction, coagulation and sintering was studied in a counterflow diffusion flame burner. The counterflow geometry provides a one dimensional flow field, along the stagnation point streamline, which greatly simplifies interpretation of the particle growth characteristics. $SiCl_4$ has been used as the source of silicon in hydrogen/oxygen/argon flames. The temperature profiles obtained by calculation showed a good agreement with experiment data. Using one and two dimensional sectional method, aerosol dynamics equation in a flame was solved, and these two results were compared. The two dimensional section method can consider sintering effect and growth of primary particle during synthesis, thus it showed evolution of morphology of non-spherical particles (aggregates) using surface fractal dimension. The effects of flame temperature and chemical loading on particle dynamics were studied. Geometric mean diameter based on surface area and total number concentration followed the trend of experiment results, especially, the change of diameters showed the sintering effect in high temperature environment.
The densification behavior of Al-20Si-5.5Fe-1.2Mg-0.5Mn powders was investigated through micro-structure analysis of sintered specimens. The specimens sintered in vacuum or in high purity (99.999%) nitrogen showed porous near-surface microstructures. The densification of near-surface part was enhanced by means of ultra-high purity (99.9999%) nitrogen atmosphere. The relationship between slow densification and oxide surfaces of Al alloy powders was discussed. And the effects of Mg addition, nitrogen gas, and humidity on densification were discussed. In addition, the rapid growth of primary Si crystals above the critical temperature was reported.
The development of the frequency converter using semiconductor enables to easily control the speed of A.C. motors. It is now technically possible and economically feasible to provide them with power at variable frequency, using silicon-controlled-rectifier (or thyristor) inverters. In such a case, if an induction motor is to be operated efficiently over a wide speed range, it must be supplied from a variable-frequency source whose frequency is adjustable over a range similar to that required for the motor speed. It is desired to observe how several characteristics are changed such as primary current, torque-speed, etc. Although the characteristics could be obtained by means of the conventional method, it requires very complicated calculation. It is assumed that the charateristics above are easily investigated by means of current diagram method from variable circuit constants relating to the motor which is designed in rated frequency. In this paper, the results of the study on the current-diagram method and its application are described as follows; (1) In order to discuss the construction of current diagram, the equation of the stator current with adjustable frequency was derived for applying the Current Diagram Method. (2) The radius, the center of the current circle and current vector locus at any desired frequency could be easily determined with the aid of both above mentioned equation and the standard current diagram at reference frequency. (3) This method could be applicable to the various types of Induction Motors, and this paper has dealt with its application to the capacitor, split-phase and 2-phase types of motors.

In this paper, a new Silicon on Insulator (SOI)-based photodetector was proposed, and its basic operation principle was explained. Fabrication steps of the detector are compatible with those of conventional SOI CMOS technology. With the proposed structure, RGB (Read, Green, Blue) which are three primary colors of light can be realized without using any organic color filters. It was shown that the characteristics of the SOI-based detector are better than those of bulk-based detector. To see the response characteristics to the green (G) among RGB, SOI and bulk NMOSFETS were fabricated using $1.5\mu m$ CMOS technology and characterized. We obtained optimum optical response characteristics at $V_{GS}=0.35 V$ in NMOSFET with threshold voltage of 0.72 V. Drain bias should be less than about 1.5 V to avoid any problem from floating body effect, since the body of the SOI NMOSFET was floated. The SOI and the bulk NMOSFETS shown maximum drain currents at the wavelengths of incident light around 550 nm and 750 nm, respectively. Therefore the SOI detector is more suitable for the G color detector.
