Background: Mandibular deficiency leading to facial asymmetry causes cosmetic deformity as well as psychological stigma for the patient. Correction of these mandibular asymmetries is a major challenge. The study investigates the efficacy of bidirectional mandible distraction for the treatment of mandibular deficiency. Methods: This prospective study included six individuals aged between 17 and 24.4 years. Five patients had hemifacial microsomia and one had unilateral temporomandibular joint ankyloses. All patients underwent mandibular distraction osteogenesis. Postoperative skeletal changes in affected mandible, and changes in occlusal plane and oral commissure cant were evaluated using three-dimensional reconstruction. Patient satisfaction and understanding of the procedure were assessed through three questionnaires administered during pre-distraction, distraction and post-distraction phases. Results: In pre-distraction phase, aesthetic appearance seemed to be the primary indication for surgery. In distraction phase, pain while chewing was the primary handicap. In post-distraction phase all patients were satisfied with the aesthetic outcome. The facial deformity was improved through mandibular distraction osteogenesis. On the affected side in all the patients, height and length of the mandible increased. Canting of the occlusal plane and oral commissure was corrected. Conclusion: Bidirectional mandible distraction is an effective treatment for correction of mandible deformities in adult patients.
An attempt was made to apply digital image correlation (DIC) strain analysis to in-situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations of bending deformation to quantify local strain distribution inside a ZnMgAl-alloy coating in deformation. Interstitial-free steel sheets were hot-dipped in a Zn-3Mg-6Al (mass%) alloy melt at 400 ℃ for 2 s. The specimens were deformed using a miniature-sized 4-point bending test machine inside the SEM chamber. The observed in situ SEM images were used for DIC strain analysis. The hot-dip ZnMgAl-alloy coating exhibited a solidification microstructure composed of a three-phase eutectic of fine Al (fcc), Zn (hcp), and Zn2Mg phases surrounding the primary solidified Al phases. The relatively coarsened Zn2Mg phases were locally observed inside the ZnMgAl-alloy coating. The DIC strain analysis revealed that the strain was localized in the primary solidified Al phases and fine eutectic microstructure around the Zn2Mg phase. The results indicated high deformability of the multi-phase microstructure of the ZnMgAl-alloy coating.
In this paper, the active noise controll system in duct is analyzed with real time implementation. The primary noise signal detected by microphone is modeled using adaptive algorithm and the secondary signal which has the same amplitude and 180$^{\circ}$phase shift with the primary noise signal is generated in the controller. We used the DSP56001 as a real-time processor and LMS algorithm as a adaptive technique, the experimental results shows that our system can reduce the noise level in duce to 15~40[db].
Brown tumors also called as osteoclastomas, are rare nonneoplastic lesions that arise in the setting of primary or secondary hyperparathyroidism. Parathyroid adenomas or hyperplasia constitute the major Brown tumor source in primary hyperparathyroidism while chronic renal failure is the leading cause in secondary hyperparathyroidism. Most of the patients with the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism present with kidney stones or isolated hypercalcemia. However, nearly one third of patients are asymptomatic and hypercalcemia is found incidentally. Skeletal involvement such as generalized osteopenia, bone resorption, bone cysts and Brown tumors are seen on the late phase of hyperparathyroidism. The symptoms include axial pain, radiculopathy, myelopathy and myeloradiculopathy according to their locations. Plasmocytoma, lymphoma, giant cell tumors and metastates should be ruled out in the differential diagnosis of Brown tumors. Treatment of Brown tumors involve both the management of hyperparathyroidism and neural decompression. The authors report a very rare spinal Brown tumor case, arisen as the initial manifestation of primary hyperparathyroidism that leads to acute paraparesis.
In this study, to gain the semi-solid alloy we employed the electromagnetic rotation by a induction motor of 3-phases and 2-poles for Al-7wt%Si alloy and observed the size of primary solid particle, distribution state of primary solid particle, the degree of sphericity, and fraction of primary solid for the evaluation of its results. The size of primary solid particle increases from $98{\mu}m$ to $118{\mu}m$ as solid fraction increases from 0.2 to 0.5. The degree of sphericity increased as the solid fraction increased. Solid particles obtained from the microstructures of isothermally held sample were coarsened and the degree of sphericity was enhanced as isothermal holding time increased. However, when the sample was stirred for more than 40min, solid particles merged together and liquid phase was entrapped within the cluster of solid particles. The size of primary solid particle was not changed significantly with the variation of input voltages by 160V over which solid particles began to merge together to be a large cluster of about $170{\mu}m$ at 180V. The standard deviation and the degree of sphericity were not changed significantly with the variation of input voltage.
The primary stability of implants is an important factor to predict the osseointegration. Recently, the resonance frequency analysis has been used to measure the primary stability. It is an objective method to monitor the stability of implants during healing phase. This study is to validate the differences in the effect of the osteotome method according to the bone quality as well the thickness of cortical bone. Two hundred seventy implants of 3.75mm in diameter(Neoplant, Neobiotech, Korea) were placed in 135 bovine ribs. The bone quality is classified into 3 classes according to the number of bone marrow spaces which implants would be placed, and then classified into 9 subclasses after the ribs were trimmed. Two implants were placed in 15 specimens of each class. The conclusion were as follows: 1. In case of less dense cancellous bone, the oseotome method is more effective in primary stability rather than the drilling method(p <0.05). 2. If there was cortical bone, it is more advantagous to get stronger primary stability. 3. If cancellous bone is more dense or if cortical bone exists, there is no statistical significance between drilling and osteotome method(p <0.05).
A cubic perovskite-type CaCu₃Ti₄O/sub 12/ compound has recently drawn a great attention because of an extraordinary high permittivity (~10⁴ at 1 kHz) at room temperature and its near temperature-independence over a wide temperature region, and thus numerous literature have been reported on CCTO polycrytalline ceramics and thin films. However, only a few literature have been reported on the CCTO single due to the lack of information about the CCTO primary phase field. On the basis of our recent experimental determination of the CCTO primary phase field, we could grow ACu₃Ti₄O/sub 12/(A=Ca, Sr) single crystals using both top-seeded solution growth and flux growth methods. This presentation will include three major parts. In part I, the thermal decomposition reaction of CCTO and its primary phase field in the CaO-CuO-TiO₂ ternary system will be presented. Detailed growth conditions of ACu₃Ti₄O/sub 12/(A=Ca, Sr) single crystals and characteristics of as-grown crystals will be followed in Part II. Part III will be comprised of dielectric properties of as-grown ACu₃Ti₄O/sub 12/(A=Ca, Sr) single crystals. Our experimental results will be compared with those of previous reports for discussion.
The ultrastructural study on oocyt development and the process of vitellogensis in the oocytes during oogenesis in female Pampus echinogaster were investigated by electron microscope observations. In the previtellogenic phase, in particular, several intermitochondrial cements appear in the cytoplasms of the chromatin nucleleolus oocyte and perinuclear oocyte. The number of intermitochondrial cements are associated with the multiplication of the number of mitochondria in the early developmental stage. In the early vitellogenic phase, the Golgi complex in the cytoplasm of the yolk vesicle oocyte is involved in the formation of yolk vesicles containing carbohydrate yolks. At this time, many pinocytotic vesicles containing yolk precursors (exogenous substances) by pinocytosis are observed in the cytoplasm near the region of initial formation of the zona pellucida. In the late vitellogenic phase, two morphological different bodies, which formed by the modified mitochondria, appeared remarkably in the yolked oocytes. The one is the multivesicular bodies and another is yolk precursors. The multivesicular bodies were transformed into the primary yolk globules, while yolk precursors were connected with exogeneous pinocytotic vesicles near the zona pellucida. After the pinocytotic vesicles were taken into yolk precursors, the yolk precursors were transformed into the primary yolk globules. Thereafter, primary yolk globules mixed with each other, eventually, they developed into secondary and tertiary yolk globules. In this study, vitellogenesis of this species occurred by way of endogenous autosynthesis and exogenous heteogenesis. Vitellogenesis occurred through the processes of endogeneous autosynthesis, involving the combined activity of the Golgi complex, mitochondria and multivesicular bodies formed by modified mitochondria. However, the process of heterosynthesis involved pinocytotic incorporation of extraovarian precursors (such as vitellogenin in the liver) into the zona pellucida (by way of granulosa cells and thecal cells) of vitellogenic oocytes.
The success of target reconstruction in SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) imaging system is greatly dependent on the coherent detection. Primary causes of incoherent detection are uncompensated target or sensor motion, random turbulence in propagation media, wrong path in radar platform, and etc. And these appear as multiplicative phase error to the echoed signal, which consequently, causes fatal degradations such as fading or dislocation of target image. In this paper, we present iterative phase error estimation scheme which uses echoed data in all temporal frequencies. We started with analyzing wave equation for one point target and extend to overall echoed data from the target scene - The two wave equations governing the SAR signal at two temporal frequencies of the radar signal are combined to derive a method to reconstruct the complex phase error function. Eventually, this operation attains phase error correction algorithm from the total received SAR signal. We verify the success of the proposed algorithm by applying it to the simulated spotlight-mode SAR data.
The process variables for the manufacture of translucent microemulsion prepared with 2-octyl dodecanol, 12-hydroxy stearic acid cholesteryl , POE(40)HCO and 1,3-butandiol were examined initially (primary emulsion) and following aging for three months. The techniques empolyed in this study were particle size, turbidity, interfacial tension and microfluidizer. Particle size analysis and turbidity measurement to evaluate the emulsion stability were used. It was concluded that the process of the emulsification was an important indicator of the stability of the translucent microemulsion. From the particle size and and turbidity measurement of translucent microemulsion, adding the surfactant to the oil phase before the emulsification was found to be the most important factor for the stability of emulsions. We found that interfacial tension of the adding the surfactant to the oil phase is lower than that of the adding the surfactant to aqueous phase. In spite of hydrophilic surfactant, adding the surfactant to aqueous phase produced inferior emulsion to that to oil phase.
