This study selected five observational stations in the normal direction of Jinu-do(island) shoreline and observed water temperature, electrical conductivity and pressure from March, 2012 to January, 2013(about 11 months) and attempted to see the variation characteristics of ground watertable. This study wants to know : 1) External environment force factors(tide, climate, wave etc.) affecting ground watertable variation through time series and correlation analysis. 2) Spatial variations of ground watertable and electrical conductivity change by storm event. First, we found that the station at the intertidal zone was strongly affected by wave and tide level and the stations at sand dune and vegetation zone was affected by precipitation and tide level through time series data and correlation analysis. Second, during the storm event, we found that ground watertable and electrical conductivity are stabilized at the start line of sand dune and vegetation zone and transition zone between freshwater layer and seawater layer exists in the experiment area and is about 50~70 m from coastline of the south side of Jinu-do(island).

This study aims to review a topology optimization based on finite element analysis (FEA) for conceptual design of platform in the 10MW class floating type wave-wind hybrid power generation system (WHPGS). Two topology optimization theories, density method (DM) and homogenization design method (HDM) were used to check which one is more effective for a simplified structural design problem prior to the topology optimization of platform of WHPGS. From the results of the simplified design problem, the HDM was applied to the topology optimization of platform of WHPGS. For the conceptual platform design of WHPGS, FEA model was created and then the structural analysis was performed considering offshore environmental loads at installation site. Hydrodynamics analysis was carried out to calculate pressure on platform and tension forces in mooring lines induced from the offshore environmental loads such as design wave and current. Loading conditions for the structural analysis included the analysis results from the hydrodynamic analysis and the weights of WHPGS. Boundary condition was realized using inertia relief method. The topology optimization of WHPGS platform was performed using the HDM, and then the conceptual arrangement of main structural members was suggested. From the results, it was confirmed that the topology optimization might be a useful tool to design the conceptual arrangement of main structural members for a newly developed offshore structure such as the floating type WHPGS.

The present study investigated the effects of non-equilibrium condensation with the angle of attack on the coefficients of pressure, lift, and drag in the transonic 2-D flow of NACA0012 by numerical analysis of the total variation diminishing (TVD) scheme. At $T_0=298k$ and ${\alpha}=3^{\circ}$, the lift coefficients for $M_{\infty}=0.78$ and 0.81 decreased monotonically with increasing ${\Phi}_0$. In contrast, for $M_{\infty}$ corresponding to the Mach number of the force break, $C_L$ increased with ${\Phi}_0$. For ${\alpha}=3^{\circ}$ and ${\Phi}_0=0%$, $C_D$ increased markedly as $M_{\infty}$ increased. However, at ${\Phi}_0=60%$ and ${\alpha}=3^{\circ}$, which corresponded to the case of the condensation having a large influence, $C_D$ increased slightly as $M_{\infty}$ increased. The decrease in profile drag by non-equilibrium condensation grew as the angle of attack and stagnation relative humidity increased for the same free stream transonic Mach number. At ${\Phi}_0=0%$, the coefficient of the wave drag increased with the attack angle and free stream Mach number. When ${\Phi}_0$ > 50%, the coefficient of the wave drag decreased as ${\alpha}$ and $M_{\infty}$ increased. Lowering ${\Phi}_0$ and increasing $M_{\infty}$ increased the maximum Mach number.
The volumetric pressure plate extractor (VPPE) was modified for the measurement of shear wave velocity ($V_s$) at various levels of matric suction as well as soil water characteristic curve (SWCC). A non-destructive technique with a pair of bender element (BE) was employed in order to measure the $V_s$ and the corresponding maximum shear modulus ($G_{max}$) of unsaturated soil specimens. Three types of soil were collected from different road construction sites in Korea. For all test soils, the variations in $G_{max}$ with the various levels of water content and matric suction were investigated using the developed apparatus. Compared with the preceding results from the suction-controlled torsional shear (TS) testing system and in-situ seismic tests, the feasibility fur evaluating modulus characteristics of unsaturated compacted soils with the developed VPPE-BE system was assessed. It was confirmed that the newly developed system would be potentially helpful in modeling seasonal variation of modulus.

Because the water exposed to shock waves caused by an underwater explosion cannot withstand the appreciable tension induced by the change in both pressure and velocity, the surrounding water is cavitated. This cavitating water changes the transferring circumstance of the shock loading. Three phenomena contribute to hull-plate damage; initial shock loading and its interaction with the hull plate, local cavitation, and local cavitation closure then shock reloading. Because the main concern of this paper is local cavitation due to a near-field underwater explosion, the water surface and the waves reflected from the sea bottom were not considered. A set of governing equations for the structure and the fluid were derived. A simple one-dimensional infinite plate problem was considered to verify this uncoupled solution approach compared with the analytic solution, which is well known in this area of interest. The uncoupled solution approach herein would be useful for obtaining a relatively high level of accuracy despite its simplicity and high computational efficiency compared to the conventional coupled method. This paper will help improve the understanding of fluid-structure interaction phenomena and provide a schematic explanation of the practical problem.

Computational fluid dynamics analysis was performed for the case 3 of the EFD-CFD workshop. Solvers were used for three commercial CFD codes(Star-CCM+, Fluent and CFX) and an open source CFD code(SU2). The grid were generated four types depending on the total cells using commercial grid generation code(Pointwise). Mach number of 0.4 and 0.8, 2 degree angle of attack and Mach number of 0.9, 1 degree angle of attack were calculated. Similar pressure coefficient curve and normal force coefficient were showed from the coarse grid to fine grid of four codes. But there is a difference in the drag coefficient. The position of the shock wave was predicted forward as the discretization order increased in calculations using Star-CCM+ and Fluent. The computation time to converge, Fluent, Star-CCM +, CFX are in order, and SU2 takes much time to converge.

The safety valve used in LNG/LNG-FPSO ships plays an important role in maintaining a fixed level of pressure by emitting LNG gas out of the pipes in the LNG piping system. The discharge coefficient is regarded as the most important factor in the valve performance. To satisfy the ship's classification, the discharge coefficient of the safety valve must usually be over 0.8. Despite the importance of understanding the flow phenomena inside the safety valve, the valve design is usually based on experience and experiments. We carried out a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) investigation using the ANSYS-CFX software. We observed the flow phenomena inside the valve and measured the discharge coefficients according to changes in the valve lift, which is the distance between the exit of the nozzle and the lower part of the disc plate. We verified our CFD results for the discharge coefficients using available experimental data.
A study was conducted to determine the characteristics of acoustic emission(AE) events generated by the expansive cement induced rock fracturing. The dominant frequency and the maximum amplitude of the AE events are changed in relation to the rate of expansive pressure development in the hole. The dominant frequencies are in the range of 150∼230kHz for the small hole tests and 400∼500kHz for the large hole test. The maximum amplitudes are in the range of 0.015∼0.050cm/sec and 0.025∼0.064cm/sec, respectively. The fact that AE events of higher amplitude with higher frequency on the large hole test and lower amplitude with lower frequency on the small hole tests were detected, may strongly imply that the amount of energy consumed for a macro-crack in both tests may be similar. The expansive cement induced crack propagates stably without any distinguished event having higher amplitude and this implies that a macro-crack is a result of stable growth of micro cracks.

Aortic AIx(augmentation index) has been used to measure aortic stiffness quantitatively and even to evaluate ventricular load. However, in order to calculate aortic AIx catheters should be inserted to the subjects' artery, which hampers its clinical usage. To overcome such limitation, aortic AIx has been indirectly calculated by estimating aortic pressure wave from the peripheral arterial pulse by applying transfer functions. In this study, central aortic pressure waves using Millar catheter and radial artery pulse waves using tonometry pressure sensor were measured to establish transfer functions for an estimation of central aortic pressure waves from radial artery pulse waves. Also, an algorithm which detects augmentation point for the calculation of AIx were developed. Developed algorithm for the detection of augmentation point gradually increases the differential order to detect inflection point rather than detects the distinctive point that appears after a specific time. Transfer functions were established using 10th order ARX model and were verified for the stability of the transfer function through residual analysis. Evaluation of an algorithm for the detection of augmentation point were performed by comparing the augmentation points obtained from developed algorithm with the known augmentation points synthesized in various conditions. In addition, developed algorithm for the AIx is proved to provide more accurate results than the ones developed by previous studies. The significance of the study was in two folds. Firstly, the results could provide the basis for the measurement of aortic stiffness using easily-measurable radial artery pulse waves, and secondly, extension of the study may enable the early diagnosis of various vascular diseases.
Pool boiling of dilute aqueous solutions of polyethylene oxide polymer has been experimentally investigated for the purpose of understanding the physical mechanisms of the suppression of vapor explosions in this polymer solution. Tn solid spheres of 22.2mm and 9.5mm-diameter ore heat-ed and quenched in the polymer solutions of various concentrations at 3$0^{\circ}C$. The results showed that minimum film boiling temperature($\Delta$$T_{MFB}$) in this highly-subcooled liquid rapidly decreased from over $700^{\circ}C$ for pure water to about 15$0^{\circ}C$ as the polymer concentration was increased up to 300ppm for 22.2mm sphere, and it decreased to 35$0^{\circ}C$ for 9.5mm sphere. This large decrease of minimum film boiling temperature in this aqueous polymer solution may explain its ability to suppress spontaneous vapor explosions. Also, tests with applying a pressure wave showed that the vapor film behaved more stable against an external disturbance at higher polymer concentrations. These observations together with the experimental evidences of vapor explosion suppression in dilute polymer solutions suggest that the application of polymeric additives such as polyethylene oxide as low as 300ppm to reactor emergency coolant be considered to prevent or mitigate energetic fuel-coolant interactions during severe reactor accidents.s.
