  • The probability of lethality of personnel targets inside a room is a key issue at assessing effectiveness of a weapon system. In this study, the minimum charge weight to achieve 100% lethality of personnel targets inside a box-type room is proposed at each side length of a base of a room. A fast running blast wave model is used to simulate the pressure-time histories of the blast generated by an internal explosion inside a room, and Axelsson SP method is used to evaluate the lethality of personnel targets under the blast. 176 different internal explosion scenarios are simulated for cases of TNT weights ranging from 20kg to 170kg inside a room whose square base has a side length ranging from 5m to 15m. A linear model and a charge-density model were developed to predict the minimum charge weight to achieve 100% lethality inside a room given a length of a base of a room.

  • To study how stable the rubble mound breakwaters are, one can look to the research of wave induced seepage flow through the pores of the rubble mound. Seepage flow is generally generated by the difference between the water level around the breakwater during a typhoon. The existing stability analysis method of the rubble mound is the static analysis which simply considers the force equilibrium taking into account the horizontal force acting on the concrete block induced by a wave (calculated by Goda equation) and the vertical force induced by the weight inclusive of the concrete block, quarry run, filter, and armor layer above the slipping plane. However, this static method does not consider the wave-induced seepage flow in the rubble mound. Such seepage may decrease the stability of the rubble mound. The stability of a rubble mound breakwater under the action of seepage was studied based on the results of CFD software (OpenFOAM) and Limit Equilibrium Method (GeoStudio). The numerical analysis result showed that the seepage flow decreased the stability of the rubble mound breakwaters. The results of the numerical analyses also revealed the stability of the rubble mound was varied with time. Especially, the most critical state happened at the condition of overtopping the concrete block, acting strong uplift pressure raising along side and underneath the concrete block, and generating high pore pressure inside rubble mound due to seepage flow. Therefore, it may be necessary to conduct a dynamic analysis considering the effect of wave-induce seepage flow together with the static analysis.

  • Ejector-diffuser system makes use of high-pressure primary stream to entrain the low-pressure secondary stream through pure shear action between two streams. In general, the flow field in the ejector-diffuser system is highly complicated due to turbulent mixing, compressibility effects. A fatal drawback of the ejector system is in its low efficiency. Many works have been done to improve the performance of the ejector system, but not yet satisfactory. In the present study, a mixing guide vane was installed at the inlet of the secondary stream for the purpose of the performance improvement of the ejector system. A CFD method has been applied to simulate the supersonic flows inside the ejector-diffuser system. The present results obtained were validated with existing experimental data. The mixing guide vane effects are discussed in terms of the entrainment ratio, total pressure loss as well as pressure recovery.

  • The shock fracture analysis for the structures of navy vessels subject to underwater explosions or of high speed vessels frequently subject to impact loads has been carried out in two steps such as the global or macro analysis and the fine or micro analysis. In the macro analysis, Doubly Asymptotic Approximation(DAA) has been applied. The three main failure modes of structure members subject to strong shock loading are late time fracture mode such as plastic large deformation mainly due to dynamic plastic buckling, and the early time fracture mode such as tensile tearing failure or transverse shear failure. In this paper, the tensile tearing failure mode is numerically analyzed for the micro analysis by calculating the dynamic stress intensity factor $K_I(t)$, which shows the relation between stress wave and crack propagation on the longitudinal stiffener of the model. Especially, in calculating this factor, the numerical caustic method developed from shadow optical method of caustic well known as experimental method is used. The fully submerged vessel is adopted for the macro analysis at first, of which the longitudinal stiffener, subject to early shock pressure time history calculated in macro analysis, is adopted for the micro analysis.

  • Dual throat nozzle(DTN) is recently attracting much attention as a new concept of the thrust vectoring technique. This DTN is designed with two throats, an upstream minimum and a downstream minimum at the nozzle exit, with a cavity in between the upstream throat and exit. In the present study, a computational work has been carried out to analyze the performance of a dual throat nozzle(DTN) at various mass flow rate of secondary flow and nozzle pressure ratios(NPR). Two-dimensional, steady, compressible Navier-Stokes equations were solved using a fully implicit finite volume scheme. The present computational results were validated with some experimental data available. Based upon the present results, The control effectiveness of thrust-vector is discussed in terms of the thrust coefficient and the discharge coefficient.

  • After the accelerated aging, the bulkhead initiator using high explosives was carried out to verify aging characteristics. The Thru-Bulkhead Initiator operates by transmitting shock-wave generated from micro-initiator to the acceptor and the ignition explosives through the bulkhead. In order to evaluate the life-time of the product, the accelerated aging condition was set according to the life-time, and the ignition performance of the sample was measured every 10 cycles by measuring the delay time and the maximum pressure through the 10cc closed bomb test. In addition, variance analysis was used to determine aging.

  • Blast load, an impulsive load with extremely short time duration with very high pressure, is effected by ground and air condition, weight of charge, shape and location of structure. In this study, a blast dynamic analysis for the air-structural integrated model considering dynamic properties of materials and simulation of complex blast wave propagation by Arbitrary Lagrangian- Eulerian technique is suggested to perform an accurate blast analysis of concrete structures. For the verification of the proposed blast analysis method, which is the air-structure integrated model using ALE technique, the comparison of analysis and experimental results is performed. The verification confirms that the simulation of realistic behavior of RC wall structures is possible using ALE method. Also, the example cases which have been analyzed using this method show that the estimation to the structural failure criterion for blast load failure can be represented by energy absorbtion procedure.

  • A computational study on the enhancement of parallel supersonic-subsonic mixing wakes is conducted and compared with available experimental data. The first aim of the present work is to show a direct comparison between numerical predictions and equivalent experimental data for the baseline case. The Pitot pressure distribution data are in good agreement between computation and experiment, and the results show that Menter's SST model with the compressibility correction gives the best performance. Further we investigate the effects of primary parameters such as the position of the cavity, and the arrangement of the cavity at the given flow condition.

  • A Through-Bulkhead Initiation Module(TBIM) works as the shock-wave generated by the detonation of donor explosive transmits to acceptor explosive. In order to estimate the minimum thickness of the bulkhead of TBIM, the structural stress of TBIM housing is calculated via modeling analysis, and which shows a sufficient margin in strength as the minimum thickness is bigger than 0.1 mm. The free surface velocity at the metal to explosive interface is measured using VISAR to determine the optimal thickness of bulkhead. The shock pressure is calculated from the measured free surface velocity, and the probability of TBIM with respect to the thickness of bulkhead is estimated by comparing the sensitivity of acceptor explosive with it.
