The present numerical study describes the flow physics on the interaction between the supersonic freestream and jet plume. The compressible flow past a simplified afterbody model with a sonic nozzle is investigated using mass-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, discretized by a fully implicit finite volume scheme, and the standard $k-{\omega}$ turbulence model. The results obtained through the present study are discussed specifically regarding the effect of the plume pressure ratio, freestream Mach number and base dimensions on the location of the plume-induced shock wave generated on the afterbody by the underexpansion of the jet plume.

An experimental study has been conducted to investigate the effects of an ultrasonic standing-wave field to the behavior of methane/air premixed flame. Visualization technique utilizing the schlieren method was employed for the observation of premixed flame behavior. The shape of flame front and local flame velocity were measured according to the variation of reactants pressure and chamber opening/closing condition. The flame front was distorted and severely deformed to a lotus-type flame by the interaction of ultrasonic standing-wave and the reflection wave coming from an end wall of reactor.

When explosives explode in water, the effect of post-explosion gas after explosion should be considered, unlike explosion in the air. During explosion in water, the propagation velocity of the explosion pressure is faster than when the explosion occurs in the air. The generated gas is diffused and trapped in the form of bubbles by water before the energy is dissipated. At this time, the bubble expands and contracts, creating a shock wave. In order to investigate this series of phenomena, a cylinder type steel water tank capable of observing the interior was fabricated and explosion experiments were conducted. In this study, a small amount of shell-free pentolite was exploded in water. Experiments were performed to observe the behavior of the generated gas bubble as well as to measure the shock wave generated. We designed the experimental method of underwater explosion and examined the results.
fouling phenomena of ion exchange membranes were reviewed for improved design and operation of electodialysis. The membrane fouling index for electrodialysis (EDMFI) was defined for the quantitative analysis of fouling potential as an analogy to the pressure-driven membrane process. fouling phenomena were compared in the electrodialysis experiments with inorganic foulant (silica sol) and organic foulants (humate and bovine serum albumin (BSA)), and their fouling potentials were analyzed using the fouling index. The comparison showed that the EDMFI could be used as a quantitative measure of the fouling tendency in electrodialysis processes. As a novel fouling mitigation method, square wave power was reported to be effective in electrodialysis with organic foulants. The square wave powers having the pulsed electric field enabled to reduce the membrane fouling significantly at an optimal frequency.

Interfacial shear stresses have been determined for countercurrent stratified flow of air and water in a nearly-horizontal rectangular channel, based upon measurements of pressure drop, gas velocity profiles and mean film thickness. A dimensionless correlation for the interfacial friction factor has been developed as a function of the gas and liquid Reynolds numbers. Equivalent surface roughnesses for the interfacial friction factor have been calculated using the Nikuradse correlation and have been compared with the intensity of the wave height fluctuation on the interface. The results show that the interfacial shear stress is mainly affected by turbulent mixing near the interface due to the wave motion rather than by the roughened surface.

In the arctic offshore regions, massive offshore gravity platforms are recommended to be construced because of severe environments. In such structures which is so large that its characteristic length is of the order of the wave length, wave-structure interaction problem has been solved using linear diffraction theory. Structural analysis of the large scale offshore structures requires wave force distribution along depth and wave pressure distribution on the body surface. In this study, existing computer program which calculates the total wave force acting on axisymmetric bodies has been modified to calculate wave force distribution along depth and wave pressure distribution on the body surface. Numerical results of pressure distribution for a fixed vertical cylinder obtained from this analysis has been compared with the results of an analytic solution of MacCamy-Fuchs, and good agreements has been obtained. It is desirable to use 6 in the case of analytic solution, and 5 in the case of numerical solution as the Fourier Mode of Green function. The results in this study are expected to be utilized for structural analysis such as pseudo-static analysis, dynamic analysis and fatigue analysis.

In rotating detonation engine(RDE), only the detonation wave is moving around the outer wall of the combustor. Neither a mechanical part nor flow is rotating in RDE. Thus, the RDE cross section is not necessary to be circular, but arbitrary closed section is possible. A RDE of tri-arc cross section is designed and As an example of an arbitrary cross sectioned RDE, a RDE of tri-arc cross section is designed in this study, and operational and performance characteristics were examined experimentally. The rotation of the detonation wave is confirmed by dynamic pressure sensor and high-speed camera, while the characteristics of the detonation wave were investigated at the concave and convex surfaces. In the present study, the thrust level of 17.0 N to 96.0 N was obtained depending on the mass flow rate.

A numerical analysis of unsteady motion in solid rocket motors with a nozzle has been conducted. The numerical formulation including modified $\kappa$-$\varepsilon$ turbulence model treats the complete conservation equation for the gas phase and the one-dimensional equations in the radial direction for the condensed phase. A fully coupled implicit scheme based on a dual time-stepping integration algorithm has been adopted to solve the governing equations. After obtaining a steady state solution, pulse and periodic oscillations of pressure are imposed at the head-end to simulate acoustic oscillations of a travelling-wave motion in the combustion chamber. Various steady and unsteady state features in the combustion chamber of a rocket motor has been analyzed as results of numerical calculations.
Differential equations and its numerical solution program using Turbo-C were formulated to describe the radical distribution and average displacement amplitude of vibrating dehydrated contact lens(HEMA) driven by sinusoidal or rectangular pressure. The natural resonant frequency of the lens diaphram(thickness 0.08mm, diameter 14mm, curvature radius 8mm) was measured to be 5730 Hz from the extrapolation of frequency vs addedmass to the diaphram curve. The Young's modulus of the lens was measured to be $4{\times}10^9$ Pa with altering the original shape. The effect of parameters such as thickness, effective radius, damping coeff., amplitude of driving pressure on the vibration characteristics was illustrated by the computer simulation of the derived program. When the frequency of driving pressure coincides with the integral multiple of fundamental resonance frequency of the lens the wave pattern changes from arc to bell-shape along the radial position of the diaphram. If this happens to the contact lens on the cornea in vivo, it might create the feel of pull of the lens due to the increased rise of central part of the lens.

In this study, numerical simulations were performed for steady and unsteady state characteristics of length effects on linear pintle nozzles using the overset grid method. Nozzles and pintles are created separately by an auto grid generation program to use the overset grid method. Appropriate turbulent models and numerical methods are selected for the validation of simulations. Pintle shapes are chosen from five types, with differences in the ratio of length and diameter. The longer the pintle length, the greater the thrust and thrust coefficient. The chamber pressure tendency of steady-state and unsteady-state are different for various pintle velocities. The thrust of the nozzle exit responds to changes in the nozzle throat in the unsteady-state, and the speed of pressure propagation wave generated by movement of the pintle is considered to predict the major factor of performance.
