  • An analytical solution is presented to analyze the thermoelastoplastic response of a rotating thick-walled cylindrical pressure vessel made of functionally graded material (FGM). The analysis is based on Tresca's yield condition, its associated flow rule and linear strain hardening material behaviour. The uncoupled theory of thermoelasticity is used, and the plane strain condition is assumed. The material properties except for Poisson's ratio, are assumed to vary nonlinearly in the radial direction. Elastic, partially plastic, fully plastic, and residual stress states are investigated. The heat conduction equation for the one-dimensional problem in cylindrical coordinates is used to obtain temperature distribution in the vessel. It is assumed that the inner surface is exposed to an airstream and that the outer surface is exposed to a uniform heat flux. Tresca's yield criterion and its associated flow rule are used to formulate six different plastic regions for a linearly hardening condition. All these stages are studied in detail. It is shown that the thermoelastoplastic stress response of a rotating FGM pressure vessel is affected significantly by the nonhomogeneity of the material and temperature gradient. The results are validated with those of other researchers for appropriate values of the system parameters and excellent agreement is observed.

  • This paper presents fracture mechanics analysis results for various cracks located at pressurized water reactor pressure vessel nozzle crotch corners taking into consideration constraint effect. Technical documents such as the ASME B&PV Code, Sec.XI were reviewed and then a fracture mechanics analysis procedure was proposed for structural integrity assessment of various nozzle crotch corner cracks under normal operation conditions considering the constraint effect. Linear elastic fracture mechanics analysis was performed by conducting finite element analysis with the proposed analysis procedure. Based on the evaluation results, elastic-plastic fracture mechanics analysis taking into account the constraint effect was performed only for the axial surface crack of the reactor pressure vessel outlet nozzle with cladding. The fracture mechanics analysis result shows that only the axial surface crack in the reactor pressure vessel outlet nozzle has the stress intensity factor exceeding the low bound of upper-shelf fracture toughness irrespectively of considering the constraint effect. It is confirmed that the J-integral for the axial crack of the outlet nozzle does not exceed the ductile crack initiation toughness. Hence, it can be ensured that the structural integrity of all the cracks is maintained during the normal operation.

  • Actual stress distributions in the nozzle of a pressure vessel may not be in plane strain condition, implying that the crack-tip constraint condition may be relaxed in the nozzle. In this paper, a methodology for evaluating the fracture toughness of the ASME Code is presented considering the relaxation of the constraint effect in the nozzle of the reactor pressure vessel. The crack-tip constraint effect is quantified by the T-stress. The equation, which represent the relation between the fracture toughness in the lower constraint condition and the plane strain fracture toughness, is derived using the T-stress. This equation is similar to the method for evaluating the fracture toughness of the Master Curve for low constraint conditions. As a result of evaluating the fracture toughness considering the constraint effect in the reactor inlet, outlet and direct injection nozzles using the proposed equation, it was confirmed that the fracture toughness in the nozzles is higher than the plane strain fracture toughness. Applying the proposed evaluation methodology, it is possible to reflect the relaxation of the constraint effect in the nozzles of the reactor pressure vessel, therefore, the safe operation area on the pressure-temperature limit curve can be prevented from being excessively limited.

  • Vessel sealing is a medical device that converts electrical or ultrasonic energy into thermal energy and leads to seal, coagulate, and cut the vessel by protein modification within the walls or surrounding connective tissues. As most of surgeries have recently been conducted with minimally invasive surgery, the demand and market for vessel sealing are expected to get bigger. However, there is a problem that electrosurgical or ultrasonic surgical is applied and we have a high risk to evaluate the strength of seal, because the collateral and particular standards currently in force follows have not been establish. Therefore, in this study, we investigated some papers studied on the efficacy and safety of the device, the guidance of FDA and test papers previously conducted from 3 individual subject device made in Korea. We found there is a relationship between burst pressure and the performance of the device, therefore, we propose the vascular bursting pressure test for evaluating the safety and performance of the vessel sealing.

  • The accurate determination of the fast neutron flux/fluence onto the pressure vessel is an essential part of the reactor pressure vessel surveillance program. It has been reported recently that the iron cross section data in ENDF/B versions III through V might underestimate the flux/fluence of fast neutrons in steel structures such as reactor pressure vessel. In this study, for the comparison of iron data of ENDF/B-IV and VI we produced two 47-group cross section sets, CXFe-IV and CXFe-Ⅵ, which are based on Yonggwang nuclear unit-3/4 model and the iron data of ENDF/B-IV and VI, respectively. A comparison was made of the results obtained from DOT4.3 calculation using CXFe-IV and CXFe-VI. From the results, it was found that the fast flux(E 〉 1.0 MeV), which is important for the pressure vessel embrittlement analysis, increases by about 7.6% at the inner wall and 20% at the outer wall of the vessel, if the iron data are used from ENDF/B-VI instead of ENDF/B-IV.

  • The Demolition blasting has been applied for buildings and structures so far. In this study, however, a confined vessel blasting filled with water has been focused. A small amount of explosives were placed in a sealed vessel with water, perfect elastic body, supposed as a relay agent in it, and the blasting aspect was observed. Blasting pressure was standardized by Abel's equation of state. In result, if there was a relay agent in it, the pressure vessel was torn apart with smaller power than its tensile strength. If there was not, it needed 7.1~8.5 times as much power as the previous one, and the blasting pressure had not also affected the demolition and it had gone or vanished until it reached a certain point, In terms of pressure vessel made by steel, the elastic-plastic failure was took a place, and the first yield point happened along the welded area as a form of heating plastic failure we thought.

  • This study aims to find the optimal skirt dimensions for a composite pressure vessel with a separated dome part. The size optimization for the skirt structure of the composite pressure vessel was conducted using a sub-problem approximation method and batch processing codes programmed using ANSYS Parametric Design Language (APDL). The thickness and length of the skirt part were selected as design variables for the optimum analysis. The objective function and constraints were chosen as the weight and the displacement of the skirt part, respectively. The numerical results showed that the weight of the skirt of a composite pressure vessel with a separated dome part could be reduced by a maximum of 4.38% through size optimization analysis of the skirt structure.

  • In this paper, the structural design and integrity evaluations for a reactor vessel of PGSFR sodium-cooled fast reactor(150MWe) are carried out in compliance with ASME BPV III, Division 5 Subsection HB. The reactor vessel is designed with a direct contact of primary sodium coolant to its inner surface and has a double vessel concept enclosing by containment vessel. To assure the structural integrity for 60 years design lifetime and elevated operating temperature of $545^{\circ}C$, which can invoke creep and creep-fatigue damage, the structural integrity evaluations are carried out in compliance with the ASME code rules. The design loads considered in this evaluations are primary loads and operation thermal cycling loads of normal heat-up and cool-down. From the evaluations, the PGSFR reactor vessel satisfies the ASME code limits but it was found that there is a little design margin of creep damage for inner surface at the region of cold pool free surface.

  • One of the principal components of the KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) tokamak structure is the vacuum vessel, which acts as the high vacuum boundary for the plasma and also provides the structural support for internal components. Hyundai Heavy Industries Inc. has performed the engineering design of the vacuum vessel. Here the overall configuration of the KSTAR vacuum vessel was briefly described and then the design methodology and the analysis results were presented. The vacuum vessel consists of double walls, several ports, leaf spring style supports. Double walls are separated by reinforcing ribs and filled with baking/shielding water. The overall external dimensions of the main body are 3.39 m high, 1.11 m inner radius, 2.99 m outer radius, and made of SA240-316LN. The vacuum vessel was designed to be capable of achieving the base pressure of $1\times10^{-8}$ Torr, and also to be structurally capable of sustaining the vacuum pressure, the electromagnetic and thermal loads during plasma disruption and bakeout, respectively. The vacuum vessel will be baked out maximum $150^{\circ}C$ by hot pressurized water through the channels formed between double walls and the reinforcing ribs. A 3-D temperature distribution and the resulting thermal loads in the vessel were calculated during bakeout. It was found that the vacuum vessel and its supports were structurally rigid based on the thermal stress analysis. The maximum electromagnetic loads on the vacuum vessel induced by eddy and halo currents resulting from the engineering plasma radial and vertical disruption scenarios have been estimated. The stress analyses have been performed based on these electromagnetic loads and the resulting stresses at he critical locations of the vacuum vessel were within the allowable stresses.
