This paper reports on the development of a new composite slab system that uses a large- lipped steel channel and reinforced concrete. The advantages of this new system are that it serves as both a structural unit and an unsupported form and it has a secondary structural barrier function. A concrete pouring test was carried out for the large-lipped steel channel. Full-scale tests were carried out to assess the flexural strength-deformation characteristics and structural mechanics of the composite slab. The barrier mechanics of the steel channel concrete element (referred to as the SC subunit) of the composite slab are examined. The test results indicate that the new composite slab has excellent strength, ductility characteristics, and a structural barrier function in its SC subunit that is highly effective against severe loading.
In order to investigate elementary school students' readiness to write on scientific subject, we analyzed the participants' draft in elementary student section [National Student Science Writing Contest] which is sponsored by a daily press. As a first step, we designed an assessment framework to analyze the students' writing. It is composed of three domains: scientific thinking, logical validity, creativeness. Each domain has three sub-domains. By using the framework, seven raters scored the students' inquiry reports. The findings reveal that the students needed the training for scientific writing. Especially they had great difficulty in the sub-domain of 'suggestion of rational alternative solution' in scientific thinking domain, the sub-domains of 'clearness' and 'coherence' in logical validity domain, and in the sub-domains of 'creative problem solving' and 'creative presentation' in creative domain.

This paper reports the results of an experimental investigation of the polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) influence on the steel reinforcement corrosion and compressive strength of concretes in sulphate medium. The effect of admixture of PVP in concrete on the corrosion resistance of steel reinforced concrete was assessed by measuring electrochemical test during 60 days immersion in two different external solutions. AC impedance spectrum indicated that the resistance of PVP mixed electrodes were higher than those without PVP. The compressive strength of concrete specimens containing PVP was measured and an increase of 19%~24% was observed.
In the last decades there have been frequent reports of oscillations of slender tension members under simultaneous action of rain and wind - characterized by large amplitudes and low frequencies. The members, e.g. cables of cable-stayed bridges, slightly inclined hangers of arch bridges or cables of guyed-masts, show a circular cross section and low damping. These rain-wind induced vibrations negatively affect the serviceability and the lifespan of the structures. The present article gives a short literature review, describes a mathematical approach for the simulation of rain-wind induced vibrations, sums up some examples to verify the calculated results and discusses measures to suppress the vibrations.
This paper reports an experimental study into the rheological behaviour of Smart Dynamic Concrete (SDC). The investigation is aimed at quantifying the effect of the varying amount of mineral admixtures on the rheology, setting time and compressive strength of SDC containing natural sand and crushed sand. Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) in conjunction with the mineral admixtures was used in different replacement ratio keeping the mix paste volume (35%) and water binder ratio (0.4) constant at controlled laboratory atmospheric temperature ($33^{\circ}C$ to $35^{\circ}C$). The results show that the properties and amount of fine aggregate have a strong influence on the admixture demand for similar initial workability, i.e., flow. The large amounts of fines and lower value of fineness modulus (FM) of natural sand primarily increases the yield stress of the SDC. The mineral admixtures at various replacement ratios strongly contribute to the yield stress and plastic viscosity of SDC due to inter particle friction and cohesion.
This paper reports a series of component tests on a lightweight floor system and a method to predict the natural frequency of the floor using a frame analysis program. Full-scale floor tests are also briefly described. DuraGal steel Rectangular Hollow Sections (in-line galvanised RHS) are used as joists, bearers and piers in DuraGal lightweight floor systems. A structural grade particleboard is used as decking. Connection stiffness between different components (bearer, joist, pier and floor decking) was determined. A 40% composite action was achieved between the RHS joist and the particleboard. Both 2D and 3D models were developed to study the effect of connection stiffness on predicting the natural frequency of DuraGal lightweight floor systems. It has been found that the degree of shear connection between the bearer and the joist has a significant influence on the floor natural frequency. The predicted natural frequencies are compared with measured values from full scale floor testing.
This paper reports the testing of concrete slabs reinforced with CFRP prestressed concrete prisms(PCP) on the flexural behavior. Four concrete slabs were tested, a reference slab reinforced with steel bars, and three slabs reinforced with CFRP prestressed concrete prisms (PCP). All slabs were made with dimensions of 600mm in width, 2200mm in length and 150 in depth. All concrete slabs reinforced with CFRP prestressed concrete prisms(PCP) exhibited CFRP bar rupture failure mode. It was shown that the application of the CFRP prestressed prisms can limit service load deflections and crack width, the increased level of prestress in the CFRP prestressed prism positively affected the maximum crack width. The deflection of concrete slabs reinforced with CFRP prestressed prisms decreased as prestress in the CFRP prestressed prism increased.
In the companion paper, the nonlinear consolidation of soft clays subjected to cyclic loading was analytically investigated. This paper reports the results of an experimental program conducted to verify some critical assumptions made in the analytical study. It, also, includes a numerical study carried out to examine the capability of the proposed theory to determine the consolidation characteristics of soft clays subjected to cyclic loading. Results show that the permeability of the soft clays does not significantly change during the cyclic loading. It is also shown that, compared to the Terzaghi's solution for a linear clay, the inherit nonlinearity of the clay tends to decrease the degree of consolidation due to the smaller rate of dissipation in the excess pore water pressure.
This paper reports the experimental results of three through bolt beam-column connections under pure shear forces using modified push-out tests. The investigated specimens include extended end-plates and six through-bolts connecting square concrete-filled steel tubular column (S-CFST) to steel beams. The main goal of this study is to investigate if and how the mechanical shear connectors, such as steel angles and stud bolts, contribute to the shear transfer mechanisms in the steel-concrete interface of the composite column. The contribution of shear studs and steel angles to improve the shear resistance of steel-concrete interface in through-bolt connections was investigated using tests. The results showed that their contribution is not significant when the beam-column connection is included in the push-out tests. The specimens failed by pure shear of the long bolts, and the ultimate load can be predicted using the shear resistance of the bolts under shear forces. The predicted values of load allowed obtaining a good agreement with the tests results.
The high-temperature material properties of steel are very important to the fire resistance analysis of high-strength bolt connections. This paper reports on the results of the experimental studies on the high-temperature properties of 20 MnTiB steel which is widely used in high-strength bolts, and the friction coefficient of 16Mn steel plates at elevated temperature which is a necessary parameter for bolted frictional connection analysis. The test data includes yield strength, limit strength, modulus of elasticity, elongation and expansion coefficient of 20MnTiB steel at elevated temperature, and the friction coefficients between two 16Mn steel plates under elevated temperatures and after cooling. Based on the data from the tests, the mathematical models for predicting the mechanical properties of 20MnTiB steel and friction coefficients of 16Mn steel plates have been established.
