Simultaneous Analysis of Antimicrobial Three Straight Chain 1,2-alkanediols in Cosmetics by Gas Chromatography (가스크로마토그래피를 이용한 화장품 중 항균작용의 3종의 직쇄상 1,2-알칸디올류의 동시분석)

  • Preservatives such as paraben, phenoxyethanol, and chlorphene are commonly used in cosmetics thanks to cheap price and good antiseptic effect. Recently, consumers' concerns about their possible toxicity and skin irritation forced them to be replaced with straight 1,2-alkanediols. However, as the alkanediols may also irritate skin, limited amount of them should be used in cosmetics. Three 1,2-alkanediols including 1,2-pentanediol, 1,2-hexanediol, and 1,2-octanediol in cosmetics were analyzed simultaneously by gas chromatogrphy with flame ionization detector. As a result of method validation, the specificity was confirmed by the calibration curves of 1,2-pentanediol, 1,2-hexanediol, and 1,2-octanediol showing good linearity correlation coefficient of above 0.999 over the concentration range of $100{\sim}1,200{\mu}g/g$. The limit of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) of 1,2-pentanediol, 1,2-hexanediol, and 1,2-octanediol were 31, 40, and $19{\mu}g/g$ and 98, 108, and $57{\mu}g/g$, respectively. The precision (Repeatability) of the amount in cosmetics showed less than 2.0%. Relative Standard Deviation (% RSD) and the Accuracy (% recovery) of the amount in cosmetics showed 99.3 ~ 103.3, 99.4 ~ 106.7, 97.5 ~ 107.3% respectively. As a result, simultaneous analysis of antimicrobial three 1,2-alkanediols in cosmetics were possible. This method can be utilized in accurate quantitative analysis of 1,2-alkanediols in cosmetics.

Isolation and Identification of Pentachlorophenol-degrading Bacteria (Pentachlorophenol을 분해하는 세균의 분리와 동정)

  • To develope the enhanced bacterial strains capable of biodegradation for various chlorinated aromatic compounds, 100 bacterial strains were isolated from soil samples of suburbs of Taejon, Cheongju, and Jeonju by the enrichment culture. These strains can degrade pentachlorophenol (PCP) which is a kind of wood preservatives. Nineteen strains of the isolates were selected by fast colony-forming rate on solid minimal media containing PCP as an only source of carbon and energy. These strains were identified to genus level. Fifteen strains were identified as Pseudomonas, 1 strain as Acinetobacter and 3 strains were not. Genus Alcaligenes strains were not found among them. Pseudomonas sp. MU135. MU139, MU163 and MU 184 were able to degrade for 4 kinds of chlorinated compounds, PCP, 2,4-D, MCPA and 3CB. Pseudomonas sp. If was observed that MU139 exhibits the highest degradability in liquid minimal media at 72 hours after inoculation. Pseudomoans sp. MU147, MU177, MU184 and MU192 also degraded the compounds at higher rates. As the results, Pseudomonas sp. MU139 and unidentified strain MU184 had biodegrability for broad range of chlorinated compounds and higher rates of degradation for PCP.

Evaluation of Deterioration of Larix kaempferi Wood Heat-treated by Superheated Steam through Field Decay Test for 12 Months (12개월 야외 내후성 시험에 의한 과열증기 열처리된 낙엽송재의 열화 평가)

  • In this study, the decay resistance of larch wood, which was heat treated by superheated steam, was evaluated by the field decay test. During the field decay test of 12 months, non-treated wood has been severely damaged by termite, however, no visible damage has occurred in the preservative-treated wood and superheated steam heat-treated wood. Results of field decay test showed approximately 5% mass loss of the non-treated wood and the preservative-treated wood, and approximately 1% mass loss of the superheated steam heat-treated wood. After the field decay test for 12 months, the residual amount of preservatives remaining in the preservative-treated wood was lower than that before the field decay test. It was considered that the preservative was partially eluted during the field decay test, and the mass loss of the preservative-treated wood was thought to be similar to that of the non-treated wood. Through this study and additional long-term monitoring test, superheated steam heat treatment can be considered to be an environmental-friendly method to enhance the decay resistance of wood against rot fungi and/or insect without chemical treatment such as preservative injection.

Current Researches on the Protection of Exterior Wood from Weathering (목재의 기상열화 방지에 관한 최근의 연구 동향)

  • A review of research trends on wood surface protection for exterior use obtained the following conclusions: It has been reported that inorganic compounds such as chrome and copper used as wood preservatives can protect wood from weathering. It has been shown that precoating with hydrophobic substances such as wax and oil, UV absorbers, and HALS (Hindered Amine Light Stabilizers) enhances weathering resistance on the surface of ACQ-treated wood. Opaque coatings of paint/stains and semitransparent stains on the surface of preservative treated wood can increase the synergistic effects on prevention of weathering deterioration. Also the need for repainting periodically for the protection of the preservative treated wood surface has also been suggested. ZnO or $TiO_2$ of fine particles, metal ions such as Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ni and Ti, and UV absorbers such as tris-resorcinol triazine derivatives, triazine and benzotriazole were introduced as additives for preventing UV in the transparent coating on wood. Several reports showed that chemical modification such as methylation, acetylation, or alkylations have made some increases the effects of preventing weathering with the increasing weight gain of chemical formulas. In heat-treated wood, there were various contradictory reports on the resistance of weathering, and there were some other reports emphasizing the necessity of painting with UV resistance, which leads to the necessity of more advanced studies.

Effects of Various Additives for Spoilage Prevention on Brewers grain and Soymilk by-product (여러 가지 첨가제가 맥주박과 베지밀박의 부패방지에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was carried out to evaluate supplemental effects of various preservatives to preserve the Brewers grain and Soymilk from decay and degeneration. The NaCl, organic acid(Ca-propionate), microbial fermenter(H/MF inoculant), and methionine hydroxy analogue(MHA) were used as additives in order to compare preservability of brewers grain and soymilk by-product during 20 days at July to August. Most treatments were appeared rapid decay and degeneration as soften and covered with molds on surface from the early days of experiment. However, MHA treatments showed any change until 20 days of storage. In terms of pH and $NH_3-N$ contents, only MHA treatment showed a stable and low value. The other treatments including Control showed high values as time flowed or unstable states. In conclusion, when high moisture agricultural by-product was treated by over 5% of MHA, there was no significant physicochemical changes in long term preservation over 20 days at summer season.

Pressure Treatment of Japanese Red Pine, Japanese Larch, and Ezo Spruce Round Posts with CCA (소나무, 낙엽송, 북양가문비나무 원주가공재의 CCA 가압처리)

  • This study was designed to investigate the effect of treatment variables on CCA treatment of Japanese red pine (Pinus densiflora), Japanese larch (Larix leptolepis), and ezo spruce (Picea jezoensis) round posts. Variables included were duration of initial vacuum (30, 45, or 60 minutes) and maximum pressure applied (8.5, 10.5, or 14.0 kg/$cm^2$), and maximum pressure was maintained until refusal point was reached. Regardless of wood species, extending the duration of initial vacuum more than 30 minutes did not affect treatability. Increasing pressure did not affect preservative penetration; however, preservative retention was affected by pressure levels, particularly at higher level (14.0 kg/$cm^2$). Preservative penetration depth of Japanese red pine met a minimum requirement specified by Notification of Korean Forestry Administration (No. 1999-8) for hazard class H5 of CCA-treated wood. Penetration of preservative in both Japanese larch and ezo spruce was not deep because of shallow sapwood thickness of these species, so pretreatment such as incising should be considered if these species are treated with preservatives. Although retention in Japanese red pine was not significantly increased even with 14.0 kg/$cm^2$, that of refractory Japanese larch and ezo spruce was significantly increased with the application of 14.0 kg/$cm^2$. Effect of treatment variables on refusal time was unclear; however, it is cleared that the refusal time was shortened with the increase in sapwood thickness.

Antibacterial Activities of Suaeda maritima Extract. (제주도 해홍나물(Suaeda maritima) 추출물의 항균활성)

  • To develop natural food preservatives, methanol and water extracts were prepared from the Suaeda maritima and their antibacterial activities were examined against 12 microorganisms which were food borne pathogens bacteria, food poisoning microorganisms and food-related bacteria. Methanol extracts exhibited antibacterial activities for the 5 Gram positve and 7 Gram negative bacteria by agar diffusion method, The antibacterial activities and cell growth inhibition were investigated on each strain with the different concentrations of Suaeda maritima extracts. Antibacterial activities were shown in root, stem, furit extracts of Suaeda maritima. However stem and fruit extracts showed weak antibacterial activity against the tested microorganisms. Root extracts showed the highest antibacterial activities against microorganisms tested, such as Bacillus cereus,Bacillus subtilis, Vibrio parahaemolyticus, Staphylococcus aureus. The highest antibacterial activity against bacteria test was found in the methanol extract.

Effects of Antioxidants and Preservatives on Growth of Selected Microorganisms in Soy Sauce and Paste (항산화제 및 보존료가 장류의 미생물 성장에 미치는 영향)

  • Butylated hydroxyanisole(BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene(BHT), butyl-p-hydroxy-benzoate(POBB) and sodium benzoated(SB) were evaluated for their effects on the growth of three Aspergillus strains and two yeast strains(Torulopsis etchellsii and Candida diddensii). The growth of Torulopsis etchellsii and Candida diddensii was completely inhibited by 100 ppm of BHA or POBB. As little as 50 ppm of BHA and POBB significantly inhibited the cell growth. The growth of Torulopsis etchellsii and Candida diddensii was not inhibited by 100 ppm of BHT or SB. BHT and SB did not inhibit the growth and sporulation of three Aspergillus strains,whereas, in the presence of BHA and POBB, the growth of all three strains was affected. The higher the amounts of antioxidants were applied, the greater the inhibitory effects were observed.

Optimization of Minimally Processed White Radish for Kkakttugi Preparation (깍두기 김치 제조용 절단 무의 가공적성에 대한 연구)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of quality preservatives on minimally processed white radish for Kkakttugi, hot radish Kimchi, preparation during storage at $4^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$. The firmness of minimally processed white radish decreased during storage at $4^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$. However 1% $CaCl_2$ and 2% NaCl+2% sucrose treatments were effective to maintain the firmness of cut radishs. For color, Hunter L values decreased more in the samples stored at $20^{\circ}C$ than at $4^{\circ}C$, while a values showed a slight increase at both storage temperatures. The b values (browning index) showed a notable increase during storage at $4^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$. Vitamin C content decreased during storage at both temperatures by 10.4% ~ 95.9%. At both storage temperatures, vitamin C content was highest in the samples treated with 1% NaCl+1% sucrose. For organic acid, while the content of malic acid decreased those of lactic and acetic acid increased during storage.

The Movement of Boron Compound by Infusion Method and Combination of Injection and Bandage-Wrapping

  • The existing preservation methods are difficult to be applied to a large dimension log which is needed for making traditional wooden ship 'Jalur' in Riau Province. Novel techniques to provide the use of readily available species to replace traditional species alternative were investigated. These included infusion and a combination of injection and bandage-wrapping methods for preserving living trees of Balam (Macaranga conifera (Rchb.f. & Zoll.) Müll.Arg.) and Bintangor (Calophyllum soulattri Burm.f.). Water-based boron compounds were applied as wood preservatives. In total, 18 discs from the bottom, middle, and top of four trees and two controls were used. Trees undergoing treatment were also used to see how wood anatomical structure might affect the boron penetration. The overall aim was to identify the best method for use in Jalur manufacturing. The results showed that in infused Balam tree where the hose position for the preservative intake was deep (10-15 cm from the bark), no boron compound was observed in the outer sapwood. Combination of injection and bandage-wrapping method gave higher percentage of boron penetration at bottom and middle of Balam tree. However, infused Bintangor showed 100% boron penetration. The larger vessel diameter, the absence of tyloses, and the simple perforation plates in Bintangor wood were likely to have contributed to the higher penetration of boron. The combination of bandage-wrapping and infusion, or alternatively by infusing the living trees close to the bark, and at as low as position in the stem gives better protection when treatments are applied to living trees.
