  • A rapid and simple method for detecting chemical preservatives was attempted on the basis of emitted fluorescence at the illumination of UVSL-25 mineral light. Absorption and fluorescence spectra of powdered samples dispersed in liquid paraffin revealed characteristic patterns depending on chemical preservatives. Detection of chemical preservatives was more readily accomplished by simultaneous comparison of spectral characteristics at long and short wave ranges of the exciting light.

  • The easy and simple simultaneous analytical method of preservatives (BA, SA, DHA, MP, EP, IPP, PP, IBP and BP) was studied by more easily changing from method used in food and drug using HPLC with scherzo SM-C18 column. All presevatives were seperated successfully in mobile phase of 50 mM ammonium formate : 0.1% phosphoric acid (50:50 v/v%) and 50 mM ammonium formate : acetonitrile (30 : 70). Retention time of BA, SA, DHA, MP, EP, IPP, PP, IBP and BP was 7.74, 9.08, 12.57, 13.83, 21.62, 27.29, 28.20, 33.20 and 33.68 min, respectively. The calibration curves of BA, SA, DHA, MP, EP, IPP, PP, IBP and BP were linear over the concentration range of 5~80 ${\mu}g/mL$ with correlation coefficient of above 0.999. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitation (LOQ) of BA, SA, DHA, MP, EP, IPP, PP, IBP and BP were 0.52 and 1.58, 1.09 and 3.29, 1.00 and 3.03, 1.36 and 4.13, 1.26 and 3.83, 1.02 and 3.08, 1.11 and 3.37, 0.82 and 2.48, 0.85 and 2.59 ${\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The coefficients of variation for intra- and inter-day assay were 0.12~2.68 and 0.18~2.66%, respectively. The developed method showed good intra- and inter-day precision and accuracy. The preservatives used in mouthwashes were BA, MP and PP and were detected in 24 samples(86%) except for 4 samples and not showed significant difference in using dose of adult and children. In conclusion, the developed method can be useful for simultaneous analysis of preservatives in mouthwashes and these results suggest that could be applied to fundamental study and guideline on content of preservatives in mouthwashes.

  • Current research trends of non-copper wood preservatives for enhancing durability was reviewed; as a follow-up of the review in 2012 on copper-based wood preservatives. Main environmental friendly non-copper wood preservatives studied by many scientists were boron-based compounds, synthetic compounds from natural products, and pyrethroids family of chemicals, etc. The critical issue regarding treated woods with boron-based compounds used outdoors was the leaching of boron. Many studies mainly focused on boron fixation improvement using variety of polymers. Moreover, the studies showed notable increases in attempts to use natural products used commonly in the medical fields as wood preservatives as well as outdoor use of chemical modified such as acetylated wood developed in purpose of stabilizing dimension.

  • Effects of natural preservatives on quality and shelf-life of fresh pork were investigated by evaluating changes in physicochemical properties, sensory evaluation, and mcrobial properties during storage. Acidity and VBN values of pork with preservatives were lower than those of control. Total bacterial count of pork with preservatives was significantly lower than that of control during storage. Sensory results showed pork with preservatives had lower sensory color and off-flavor scores than control. Changes in pH, VBN, total bacterial count, coliform group, and sensory evaluation revealed pork with preservatives showed less quality changes than control during storage, regardless of storage temperature. Results indicated that addition of preservatives to pork increased shelf-life by 7 days at $4^{\circ}C$.

  • Sensory irritation is one of the important side effects of cosmetics and it is required to develop new products that are more tolerable to the consumers. There are lots of cosmetic ingredients known to induce sensory irritation such as lactic acid, glycolic acid, ethanol, preservatives, fragrances and menthol etc. It is also known that sensory irritation increases by change of pH as well as additional occlusive conditions. The aim of this study is to know various factors affecting sensory irritation due to preservatives (methylparaben, propylparaben, phenoxyethanol and chlorophenecin). We also wanted to investigate the effect of preservatives to sensory irritation according to change of formulations. Our results showed that sensory irritation increased with the conditions of increasing absorption such as packs. We have also found that sensory irritation increased synergistically when to apply two different preservatives together. For example, phenoxyethanol and chlorphenesin themselves have weak sensory irritation potentials, but we observed phenoxyethanol combined with chlorpenesin synergistically increase of sensory irritation potentials. In conclusion, formulation and combination of different preservatives should be considered to reduce the unwanted sensory irritation of preservatives.
