  • Purpose: This study was conducted to investigate the changes in distance refractive power and reading addition that occur after wearing corrective glasses for prebyopia. Methods: The subjects aged 42 to 75 years who had no ophthalmologic diseases and did not undergo cataract or retina surgery, had a corrected visual acuity of 20/20 and did not have a previous history of wearing corrective glasses for presbyopia. These subjects were divided into 3 groups: the control, reading spectacles and multifocals wearing group and they were measured for distance refractive power and reading addition at their visit. The maximum follow-up period was 73 months. Results: As for distance refractive power, the power tends to shift to hyperopia depending on age (r=0.486, p<.001) and 50.0% of the subjects increased plus power during this study period. Plus power Increments per year in distance refractive power in the reading spectacle wearing group were significantly different with control and multifocals wearing group (p<.05). On the other hand, the multifocals wearing group's increments were not different with control. Increments in reading addition were also increased in the reading spectacles group than in the control and multifocals wearing groups (p<.05). Conclusions: The age related hyperopic shift could be occurred in the elderly people, routine refraction is mandatory. And reading spectacles could induce an age related hyperopic shift and the additional need for reading addition that the prescription of multifocals may reduce changes in distance refractive power and reading addition.

  • Hwan Myeong Hwan (環明丸) is Chinese patent medicine which is used for presbyopia and eye disease. It consists of 23 kind of powdered crude drugs. In powered crude drugs, it is hard to identify each component by chemical analysis or morphological examination. However, the method of identification of powdered crude drugs has not been clearly established. For the identification of individual crude drugs in such powdery mixtures, microscopic method may advantageously be used as it requires only a small amount of specimens. In this study, it is demonstrated that the microscopic method is very effective for the identification of 23 crude drug ingredients in Hwan Myeong Hwan.

  • This is a succeeding article of J. Korean Optalmic Optics Society vol. 11(2) pp. 121-129(2006) [Research about the distribution of refractive errors in distinction of gender and at age of Kyonggi province's partial area]. The former article showed age-specific distribution of myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism which generally appears in refractive errors. This paper aimed to investigate the change of refractive power and prevalence of refractive errors by age. Total 928 subjects were sampled and their refractive errors were determined using auto refractometer. As the results, change of refractive power of subjects appeared at the age about 40, and suddenly reduced over 46 years resulting in (+)refractive power at their fifties. Relative risks of refractive errors of myopia increased in younger subjects but the risks decreased in older subjects (over 46 years). On the other hand, the risks of hyperopia decreased as the age of subjects increase, but could increase to 0.24 (95% CI: 0.07-0.88) after 36 years. This results showed that presbyopia might progress more early when people were before 40 years.

  • Until now, there were few supports on reading the mathematical expressions except text based expressions, so it is important to provide the reading of the mathematical expressions. Also, there are various of obstacles for people who are not visually impaired when reading the mathematical expressions such as the situation of presbyopia, reading the mathematical expressions in the vehicles, and so on. Therefore, supports for people to read mathematical expressions in various situations are needed. In the previous research, the main goal was to transform the mathematical expressions into Korean text based on Content MathML. In this paper, we expanded the range of the research from a reading disabilities to people who are not reading disabilities. We tested appropriacy of the rules we made to convert the MathML based expressions into speech and defined 3 math-to-speech rules in korean based on levels. We implemented the mathematical expressions by using 3 math-to-speech rules. We took comprehension test to find out whether our math to speech rules are well-defined or not.

  • Recently entered into an aging socity as the number of elderly drivers is increasing. Traffic accidents of elderly drivers are caused by driver inattentions such as poor vehicle control due to aging, visual information retrieval problems caused by presbyopia, and objects identifying problems caused by low contrast sensitivity. In this paper, detection method of ROIs on the road is proposed. The proposed method creates the saliency map to detect the candidate ROIs from the input image. And, the input image is segmented to obtain the ROIs boundary. Finally, selective visual attention regions are detected according to the presence or absence of a segmented region with saliency pixels. Experimental results from a variety of outdoor environmental conditions, the proposed method presented a fast object detection and a high detection rate.
