  • This research was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding high and low forage diets with different forage sources on rumen fermentation characteristics and blood parameters of Holstein cows during the dry period. Eight Holstein cows were completely randomized assigned to two groups and repeated measurement was utilized in the analysis. Cows in two treatments were fed with diets with high (F:C = 70:30, 70F; forage source: mixed-sowing whole crop barley and Italian ryegrass silage, BIRG) and low (F:C = 55:45, 55F; forage source: tall fescue hay, TF) forage level. Rumen fluid pH was higher in 70F group. Levels of acetic acid, propionic acid, and butyric acid showed a similar pattern: from the lowest value at 07:30 h to the highest at 10:30 h and then decreased in both groups. The ratio of acetic acid to propionic acid was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in 55F group at 09:30 and 10:30 h. Rumen fluid $NH_3-N$ concentrations were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in 70F group at 09:30 and 10:30 h. Blood urea nitrogen was significantly higher (p < 0.05) in 70F group. It was concluded that BIRG based diet with a high forage level had no adverse effects on rumen fermentation, some blood chemical parameters, and immune system in dry Holstein cows and could be used as a forage source instead of imported TF.

  • From September 1993 to August 1997, we treated ovarian disorders in 1,782 repeat breeder cows after diagnosis by ultrasound on 35 farms in Kyeong-ki do. The rates of ovarian appearance were 59.8% of CL group, 16.7% of ovarian atrophy or hypofunction, 15.4% of luteal cyst, 4.3% of follicular cyst and 3.7% of follicle group in diagnosis with rectal palpation and ultrasound. The results of treatment for ovarian disorders were 1,316 cows(73.8%) in estrus, 348 cows(19.5%) in non-detected and 118 cows(6.6%) in unidentified. The rates of PGF$_2$$\alpha$, GnRH and mineral vitamin complex treatment to estrus were 79.6, 69.2 and 50.3%. Two groups were treated with 5 ml PGF$_2$$\alpha$ intramuscular injection(I.M.) and 1.5 ml PGF$_2$$\alpha$ intraovarian injection(I.O.), and the results of 1.5ml PGF$_2$$\alpha$ I.0. were significantly higher than that of 5ml PGF$_2$$\alpha$ I.M. in inductiom estrus(p<0.05). The pregnant rates were 29.8% in total repeat breeder cows with ovarian disorders following diagnosis and treatment. In summary, rectal palpation and ultrasonography were proven to be useful tools of diagnosis and treatment in ovarian disorders, and it was also suggested that the response to treatment with PGF$_2$$\alpha$ I.0. was better than PGF$_2$$\alpha$ I.M.

  • The preventive effects of calcium gluconate injection and administration of anion feed on occurrence rates of the abomasal displacement and retained placenta were examined from 86 pregnant cows reared in Paju and Goyang cities in Gyunggi Province. The cows were divided into 3 groups: control (30 heads), experimental group I (28 heads) and experimental group II (28 heads), respectively. The control cows were not treated at all. The cows in experimental group I were intravenously injected with calcium gluconate(CMPK, Am. Tech. Canada, 10 g/head). The cows in experimental group II were given with the anion feed (Goyang TMR, Korea, 9 kg/head/day). The occurrence rates of the abomasal displacement in experimental groups were lower than that of control group and experimental group revealed the lowest prevalence rate, however, significance was not detected. The occurrence rate of retained placenta in experimental groups revealed lower prevalence than that of control group and experiment group II showed the lowest prevalence rate(p<0.01). Considering the above findings collectively, it was thought that administration of anion feeds was affective for prevention of the bovine retained placenta during drying milk period.

  • Objective: We aimed to evaluate the efficacy of a modified Double-Ovsynch protocol vs artificial insemination following estrus detection (AIED) for the enhancement of reproductive performance in Hanwoo cattle. Methods: Four hundred twelve Hanwoo cows were allocated to two treatment groups. The first group of cows were administered gonadotropin releasing hormone (GnRH) on Day 36 (±0.6), prostaglandin F (PGF) on Day 46 (8 to 12 days later), and GnRH on Day 49, which was followed by Ovsynch, consisting of an injection of GnRH on Day 56, PGF on Day 63, and GnRH 56 h and timed AI (TAI) 16 h later (modified Double-Ovsynch group, n = 203). The second group of cows underwent AIED (AIED group, n = 209) and were designated as controls. Results: The pregnancy per AI 60 days after the first AI was higher in the modified Double-Ovsynch (68.5%) than in the AIED (56.5%) group, resulting in a higher probability of pregnancy per AI (odds ratio: 1.68, p<0.05). Moreover, cows in the modified Double-Ovsynch group were more likely (hazard ratio: 1.28, p<0.05) to be pregnant by 150 days after calving than cows in the AIED group, and this difference was associated with a lower mean number of AIs per conception (1.27 vs 1.39, p<0.05) and a shorter median interval between calving and pregnancy (72 vs 78 days, p<0.1). Conclusion: The modified Double-Ovsynch protocol, adjusted according to the herd visit schedule, can be readily used to increase the pregnancy per AI following the first AI and to shorten the interval between calving and pregnancy in beef herds.

  • Objective: Parturition is crucial for dams, their calves, and cow managers. The prediction of calving time, which assists cow managers to decide on the relocation of cows to maternity pens and necessity of human supervision, is a pivotal aspect of livestock farming. However, existing methods of predicting calving time in dairy cows based on hormonal changes and clinical symptoms are time-consuming and yield unreliable predictions. Accordingly, we investigated whether heart rate variability (HRV) which is a non-invasive assessment of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity and behavior during the prepartum period would be useful for predicting calving time in dairy cows. Methods: Eight pregnant cows were surveilled under electrocardiogram and video recordings for HRV and behavioral analyses, respectively. HRV parameters in time and frequency domains were evaluated. A 24-h time budget was calculated for each of six types of behavior (standing and lying with or without rumination, sleeping, and eating). Results: Heart rate on calving day is considerably higher than those recorded on the days preceding calving. Low frequency power declined, whereas high frequency power escalated on the calving day compared to the period between 24 and 48 h before calving. The time budget for ruminating while lying decreased and that while standing increased markedly on the calving day compared to those allocated on the preceding days; nonetheless, the total time budget for ruminating did not differ during the prepartum period. Conclusion: We elucidated the ANS activity and behavioral profiles during prepartum period. Our results confirm that HRV parameters and behavior are useful for predicting calving time, and interestingly indicate that the time budget for ruminating while standing (or lying) may serve as a valuable predictor of calving. Collectively, our findings lay the foundation for future investigations to determine other potential predictors and formulate an algorithm for predicting calving time.

  • Improving the reproductive traits of Hanwoo might decrease their production cost. Therefore, this study was conducted to investigate the effects of environmental factors [registration grade (basic, pedigree or advanced), birth year, birth season, parity, delivery year, and delivery season] on various reproductive traits (age at 1st service, age at 1st conception, age for 1st calving, days at 1st service postpartum, non-pregnant condition period, calving interval, gestation length, and number of services for conception) in Hanwoo (primiparous 12,219 heads, multiparous 10,471 heads). All data was acquired from Gyeongnam province areas which were surveyed from 2007 to 2015. All environmental factors significantly influenced (p < 0.01) reproductive traits of primiparous cows but, but not all environmental factors influenced multiparous cows. Primiparous cows registered as advanced grade showed significantly lower age at 1st service (by 15.36 days), age at 1st conception (by 8.66 days), and age for 1st calving (by 8.77 days) (p < 0.01) than those registered as basic grades. Age at 1st service, age at 1st conception and age for 1st calving were not significantly related to birth year in primiparous cows. As delivery years advanced from 2005 to 2012, all durations associated to reproductive traits tended to be shorter. Days at 1st service postpartum, non-pregnant condition period, and calving interval tended to be shortened as parity increased. Days at 1st service postpartum, days open, calving interval, and gestation in multiparous cows calved in winter were shorter than those in summer. The registration grade was not a effected with reproductive traits in Hanwoo.

  • In the paper, we reduce non-pregnant conditions and improve impregnation rate by unmanned estrus detection and decide proper time for artificial insemination. It is too hard to detect estrus only by using activities, we develop unmanned estrus detection system that consist of RF activity sensors, cow management program and estrus detection algorithm that uses information of activities and breeding. We verify performance by experiments in four similar scale stockbreeding farmhouse. Each stockbreeding farmhouse breeds 87, 81, 93, 82 cows and expected estrus cows are 14, 19, 15, 17. In expected estrus cow, we fail in weak estrus detection - 3, 2, 1, 3 cows, but detect successfully normal estrus - 11, 17, 14, 14 cows. After artificial insemination, 10, 17, 13, 14 cows became pregnant successfully confirming that proposed unmanned estrus detection system is effective for deciding proper time for artificial insemination in normal estrus.

  • This study was carried out to improve a technique of embryo transfer for twin calves production in Hanwoo cattle. Blastocysts for the donor of embryo transfer were classified into three criteria by accessment of morphology; early blastocyst, blastocyst and expanded blastocyst. Tow embryos were introduced transcervically into utrerine horn either of Hanwoo or Holstein by ipsilaterally or contralaterally to the corpus luteum. Thiry-six out of 57 recipients cows were inseminated by artificially on the next day of estrus, and followed by transfer of embryos into contralaterally. The pregnance rates of recipients following transfer of bovine embryos of day 7, 8 and 9 was 43.5, 18.2 and 8.3%, respectively. These results appeared that these was a significant (P<0.05) difference between on day-7 embryos and day-9 embryos, but not between on day-8 and day-9 embryos. Although there was not significant(P<0.05) difference in the pregnancy rates between the blastocysts(11/25, 44%) and expanded blastocysts(2/19, 10.5%) and between the blastocysts and early blastocysts(2/13, 15.4%), the embryos at blastocyst stage are more suitable than others for obtaining higher rate of pregnancy. There was no significant difference on pregnancy of the embryos transferred prior to presence(6/21, 29%) or absence (9/36, 25%) of artificial insemination. On pregnancy of Holstein, 2(15.4%) out of 13 recipients were pregnant in heifer. Similar Pregnancy rates were obtained between 1∼2 parities and 3∼4 parities by 30% (6/20) and 27.3%(3/11), respectively. Taken together, there was not significant difference in pregnancy rate due to small number of recipients used for this experiment. Both of Hanwoo and Holstein introduced the embryos by contralsterally to the corpus luteum were slightly higher pregnancy rate compare to by ipsilaterally (12/41, 29.3% vs, 3/16, 18.8%). The ratio of production of twin and single calves in Holstein was 20% (9/45) and 2.2% (1/45), respectively. However, in Hanwoo cows both of production of twin and single were similar as 8%. This result suggests that Holstein as recipients was superior to Hanwoo cows for production of twin calves. Out of all 15 pregnant, 12(80%) were produced a total of 22 normal calves in which the others composed of abnormal, as judging as 2(13.3%) for abortion and 1(6.6%) for stillbirth during the pregnant period.

  • The study was conducted to evaluate the effect of vitamin E and zinc supplementation on energy metabolites, lipid peroxidation, and milk production in peripartum Sahiwal cows. For this, thirty-two pregnant dry Sahiwal cows were selected at sixty days prepartum and divided into four groups viz control, $T_1$, $T_2$, and $T_3$ of eight each. Group $T_1$ were supplemented with zinc at 60 ppm/d/cow, group $T_2$ were supplemented with vitamin E at 1,000 IU/d/cow and group $T_3$ were supplemented with combination of vitamin E at 1,000 IU/d/cow and zinc at 60 ppm/d/cow during d 60 prepartum to d 90 postpartum. Blood samples were collected on d -60, -45, -30, -15, -7, -3, 0, 3, 7, 15, 30, 45, 60, 90, and 120 with respect to day of parturition and analysed for glucose, non esterified fatty acid, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance. Body condition score was maintained significantly better (p<0.05) in $T_3$ than in the control, $T_1$ and $T_2$ groups. Overall glucose level was higher (p<0.05) in $T_3$ than control, $T_1$, and $T_2$ groups. Levels of nonesterified fatty acid, and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance were lower (p<0.05) in $T_3$ than control, $T_1$, and $T_2$ groups. Milk yield was higher (p<0.05) in $T_3$ than control, $T_1$, and $T_2$ groups. In conclusion, the present study indicated that the supplementation of vitamin E and zinc in peripartum Sahiwal cows enhanced milk production by reducing negative energy balance.

  • Objective: The aim of this study was to ascertain the effects of adding green tea extract (GTE) to skim milk-egg yolk (SM-EY) extender on both the quality of post-thawed bull semen and the pregnancy rates of the recipient cows. Methods: Twelve ejaculates from four Simmental bulls, aged 3 to 5 years and weighing 900 to 950 kg, were diluted SM-EY extender, added with 0, 0.05, 0.1, and 0.15 mg GTE/100 mL extender and then frozen. After four weeks storage in liquid nitrogen, the sperm were thawed and evaluated for viability, motility, intact plasma membrane (IPM), and DNA fragmentation. Meanwhile, the estrus cycles of 48 recipient cows were synchronized by intramuscular administration of a single injection of 5 mg prostaglandin F2α. Estrus cows were divided into four equal groups and inseminated artificially 18 to 20 h after the onset of estrus by using semen from each extender group. Pregnancy was diagnosed by measuring serum progesterone levels at 21 days, followed by transrectal palpation 90 days after insemination. Results: The findings revealed that adding 0.1 mg of GTE/100 mL extender produced the highest percentages of sperm viability (70.67%±1.75%), motility (69.17%±1.47%), and IPM (69.23%±1.21%) and the lowest percentage of DNA fragmentation (3.00%±0.50%). The pregnancy diagnosis revealed that all cows (36/36) inseminated using frozen semen in GTE addition extender were pregnant (pregnancy rate 100%), whereas the pregnancy rate of the control group was 83.33% (10/12). Conclusion: It may be concluded that 0.1 mg GTE/100 mL extender yields the best quality of spermatozoa and that all variants doses of GTE in extender produce a higher pregnancy rate among recipient cows.
