Ovaries from total 192 slaughtered cows, 154 Korean native cows and 38 dairy cows were collected during the slaughtering process in Kimhae, Changyoung and Yangsan abattoirs in Kyungnam province from January 2001 to January 2002. Rates of pregnant and non-pregnant and ovarian findings were invested. Rates of pregnant cows in 192 slaughtered cows were 12.5% (24 cows) and in difference of cow breeds, 11.0% (17 cows) in 154 Korean native cows and 18.4% (7 cows) in 38 dairy cows from total 192 cows, respectively. Ages of fetuses in pregnant Korean native cows were mostly less than 4 months and ages of fetuses in dairy cows were mostly about 7-8 months. Cows which each diameter of follicles and corpus luteums in same cow was more than 5-6 mm in diameter were 69.8% (134 cows) in total 192 slaughtered cows and in difference of cow breeds, 64.7% (11 cows) in 17 Korean native cows and 57.1% (4 cows) in 7 dairy cows. Mean diameter of foliicles and corpus luteums in Korean native cows are 13.7$\pm$5.6$\times$ 11.2$\pm$4.6mm and 17.5$\pm$4.6$\times$14.6$\pm$4.0 mm in non-pregnat cows, and are 11.0$\pm$4.8$\times$9.1 $\pm$ 2.6mm and 21.2$\pm$2.9$\times$18.3$\pm$ 2.7 mm in pregnant cows, respectively. Mean diameter of follicles and corpus luteums in dairy cows are 15.8$\pm$7.1 $\times$ 14.3$\pm$ 6.0 mm and 20.3$\pm$5.9$\times$16.9$\pm$ 5.8 mm in non-pregnant cows, and are 10.1 $\pm$ 3.0$\times$9.2$\pm$2.3 mm and 23.0$\pm$ 1.7$\times$20.1 $\pm$ 1.3 mm in pregnant cows, respectivley. The above findings indicate that the co-appearance rate of follicles and corpus luteums in same cows are higher in both pregnant and non-pregnant cows. Compared in pregnant and non-pregnant cow ovaries, mean size of follicles are smaller in pregnant cows but size of corpus luteums are more larger in pregnant cows than in non-pregnant cows. Correlation of the follicle size (Y) and corpus luteum size (X) in same cows developed each other in inversive size. Those correlative formulas appeared to be Y = -0.2022X+17.175 in Korean native cows and Y= -0.5754 X+24.153 in dairy cows.
Six mature purebred Angus cows ($3.5{\pm}1.5$ years of age, $631.36{\pm}8.63kg$), three pregnant ($250{\pm}7$ days pregnant) and three non-pregnant and eight mature Suffolk ewes ($5{\pm}1.2$ years of age, $68.18{\pm}2.3kg$) four pregnant $115{\pm}5$ days pregnant) and four nonpregnant were utilized in a five-day metabolic trial to determine the effects of gestational status (pregnant vs. non-pregnant) on apparent absorption and retention of copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn). Animals were selected based on body weight, age, and gestational status, and randomly assigned to metabolic crates for total fecal and urine collection. Animals were allowed to acclimate to their new environment for seven days. Pregnant and non-pregnant cows and ewes were then paired (within a species) by body weight and pair-fed throughout the 5 day collection period. Copper and Zn intakes were similar for pregnant and non-pregnant animals within a species. Apparent absorption of Cu (p<0.06) and Zn (p<0.04) were higher in pregnant cows relative to non-pregnant cows. Pregnant cows also had a higher apparent retention of Cu (p<0.05) and Zn (p<0.06) relative to non-pregnant cows. Pregnant ewes had a higher (p<0.01) apparent absorption and retention of Zn compared to non-pregnant ewes. However, apparent absorption and retention of Cu were similar for pregnant and non-pregnant ewes. These data indicate that certain physiological and/or metabolic parameters are altered in pregnant cows and ewes consuming an alfalfa-based diet that enhance the apparent absorption and retention of certain trace minerals.

In recent years, various methods of measuring body temperature have been developed using wireless biosensors to facilitate an early detection of pregnancy and parturition in cows. However, there are no studies on real-time monitoring of cattle body temperature throughout pregnancy. Therefore, we investigated the daily mean ruminal temperature in pregnant cows throughout pregnancy using a ruminal bio-capsule sensor and then evaluated the temperature variation between pregnant and non-pregnant cows. In pregnant cows, the mean and standard deviation of ruminal temperature was 38.86 ± 0.17℃. Ruminal temperature in pregnant cows slowly decreased until 180 to 190 days after artificial insemination and after that, the temperature increased dramatically until just before parturition. Furthermore, the means ruminal temperature was significantly different between pregnant and nonpregnant cows. The mean and standard deviation of ruminal temperature were as follows: 38.68 ± 0.01℃ from days 80 to 100, 38.78 ± 0.02℃ from days 145 to 165, 38.99 ± 0.45℃ from days 200 to 220, 39.14 ± 0.38℃ from days 250 to 270 before parturition. Therefore, our results could provide useful data for early detection of pregnancy and parturition in Korean cows.
This study was carried out to evaluate the ability of clinical application of pregnancy diagnosis based upon the determinatin of progesterone in milk, utilizing a chymosin inhibitor labelled with progesterone and monoclonal antibody to progesterone, and its compared with progesterone concentrations in the milk were assayed by radioimmunoassay. 1. The progesterone concentration of the pregnant cows (2.07$\pm$0.54ng/ml) were significantly higher than those of non-pregnant cows (1.04$\pm$0.19 ng/ml), and thereafter began to increase and maintained high levels. 2. During 20 to 22 days after artificial insemination, the accuracy of pregnancy diagnosis from monoclonal antigen of progesterone were 92.9% for non-pregnant cows, and 88.5% for pregnant cows. 3. During 20 to 22 days after artificial inseminatin, the accuracy of pregnancy diagnosis from milk progesterone concentrations were 92.9% for non-pregnant cows(<3.4ng/ml), and 92.3% for pregnant cows( 4.0ng/ml). The average overall accuracy of pregnancy prediction for pregnant and non-pregnant cows were 92.6%. 4. Accordingly, the pregnancy diagnosis from monoclonal antigen of progesterone is thought to be recommendable because this early diagnostic means are simple with accurate result.
This stduy was carried out to evaluate the ability of clinical application of pregnancy diagnosis based upon the determination of progesterone in serum, utilizing EIA-kit of progesterone concentrations in the serum were assayed by radioimmunoassay. 1. The progesterone concentrations of the pregnant cows(2.40$\pm$0.34ng/ml) were significantly higher than those of non-pregnant cows(1.03$\pm$0.09ng/ml), and thereafter began to increase and maintained high levels. 2. During 20 to 22 days after artificial insemination, the accuracy of pregnancy diagnosis from EIA-kit of progesterone were 95.0% for non-pregnant cows, and 92.3% for pregnant cows. 3. During 20 to 22 days after artificial insemination, the accuracy of pregnancy diagnosis from serum progesterone concentrations were 100% for non-pregnant cows(<1.4ng/ml), and 96.2% for pregnant cows( 2.0ng/ml). The average overall accuracy of prediction for pregnant and non-pregnant cows were 98.1%. 4. Accordingly, the pregnancy diagnosis from EIA-kit of progesterone is thought to be recommendable because this early diagnostic means are simple with accurate results.
This study was carried out to evaluate khe accuracy of the early diagnosis of pregnancy in dairy cows using EIK-kit of progesterone in milk and to compare the progesterone concentrations in milk with those assayed by radioimmunoassay. 1. The progesterone concentrations of the pregnant cows($2.07{\pm}0.54ng/ml$) were significantly higher than those of non-pregnant cows($1.04{\pm}0.19ng/ml$), and thereafter began to inerease and maintained high levels. 2. During 20 to 22 days after artificial insemination, the accuracy of pregnancy diagnosis from EIA-kit of progesterone were 93.7% for non-pregnant cows, and 91.6% for pregnant cows. 3. During 20 to 22 days after artificial insemination, the accuracy of pregnancy diagnosis from milk progesterone concentrations were 100% for non-pregnant cows (<2.7ng/ml), and 92.9% for pregnant cows($${\geq_-}3.2ng/ml$$). The average overall accuracy of prediction for pregnant and non-pregnant cows were 96.5%. 4. Accordingly, the pregnancy diagnosis from EIA-kit of progesterone is thought to be recommendable because this early diagnostic means are simple with accurate result.
Incidence of estrum or abortions in pregnant cows may be affected by large follicles developed together with corpus luteum in pair ovaries of pregnant cows. But the follicles of pregnant phase were not assessed about histological findings. Determination of the healthy and atretic follicles by presence of proliferative cells or apoptotic cells and histological compositions of follicles would be used as important data on measurements of ovarian functions. This study was focussed mainly to investigate macroscopical, histological and immunohistochemical findings of ovarian follicles of pregnant Korean native cows and dairy cows (Holstein). In immunohistochemical methods, assessments of proliferative cells using PCNA antibody and apoptotic cells using TUNEL methods were performed. The follicles were observed on all 24 pregnant cows (17 Korean native cows and 7 Holstein cows). Follicles of greater than 10 mm in daimeter were developed in 37.5% (9/24 heads) of these pregnant cows. largest follicles from in these cows were $16.0{\times}15.0mm$ in diameter in a Korean native cow(l20 days of gestation), $13.4{\times}10.1mm$ in a Korean native cow(50 days of gestation), $12.9{\times}11.5mm$ in a Holstein cow (120 days of gestation). 40.5% among all follicles having diameter of greater than 1.0 mm in pregnant cows were assessed as atretic follicles and in addition, healthy follicles also showed less in number and smaller in size and thinner in wall layer compared with those of cyclic phase ovaries. In immunohistochemical findings, also proliferative positive cells and apoptotic positive cells on the granulosa cell layers in the healthy follicles of pregnant cows appeared less than on those of cyclic follicles. So these follicles were assessed as weakly active follicles. In large follicles, above positive cells were not nearly appeared but granulosa cell debris were more appeared among the granulosa cells. So these large follicles were assessed as inactvie or atretic follicles. The above findings suggest that small follicles of pregnant phase were weakly active or atretic and large follicles were inactive or atretic.
We aimed to identify the biological factors during the voluntary waiting period (VWP) that are associated with subsequent reproductive performance in dairy cows. Two hundred and one pregnant dairy cows had their body condition score (BCS) evaluated and blood samples taken 4 weeks before calving, at calving, and 1, 2, 4, 6, and 8 weeks after calving, to measure serum metabolite and progesterone concentrations. In addition, any peri- and postpartum disorders within 4 weeks of calving, and the mean milk yields 4 and 8 weeks postpartum, were recorded. The cows were allocated to two groups according to whether they had become pregnant or not by 120 days after calving: a pregnant group (n = 50) and a non-pregnant group (n = 151). Analyses of serum metabolite concentrations showed that the aspartate aminotransferase and γ-glutamyltransferase activities 2 weeks (p < 0.05) and the non-esterified fatty acid concentration 6 weeks (p < 0.01) postpartum were higher in the non-pregnant than in the pregnant group. However, the albumin concentrations between 2 and 8 weeks and the total cholesterol and magnesium concentrations between 4 and 8 weeks postpartum were lower in the non-pregnant group (p < 0.05). The BCS (p < 0.05) and percentages of cows that had resumed cyclicity (p < 0.001) by 6 and 8 weeks postpartum were higher in the pregnant than in the non-pregnant group, whereas the incidence of peri- and postpartum disorders was higher in the non-pregnant group (p < 0.05). In conclusion, high serum enzyme activities, which imply liver damage, imbalances in energy metabolites and magnesium, and a higher incidence of peri- and postpartum disorders, are associated with poorer reproductive performance, whereas high BCS and early resumption of cyclicity during the VWP are associated with superior reproductive performance in dairy cows.
The objective of this research work was to know ovarian dynamics and pregnancy rate of cyclic Murrah buffalo cows with induced estrus by administration of prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) and timed artificial insemination (TAI) with frozen thawed semen. A total of 31 female buffaloes were selected for the study. The buffalos having matured CL observed by ultrasonography were given one intra muscular injection of cloprostenol 500 ㎍ and TAI was performed using frozen thawed semen of Indian Murrah buffalo bull. Results showed that 90.32% (significantly, at p < 0.05) cows explore the sign of heat after injection of PG and 67.85% (significantly, at p < 0.05) cows were become pregnant out of 28 inseminated (TAI) cows. In the 28 inseminated (TAI) cows, average number of smaller and larger size of follicles were non-significantly (p > 0.05) higher at day 3 post PG injection, but the medium size of follicles was nonsignificantly (p > 0.05) higher at PG injection. At day 3 post PG injection the diameter of follicles was significantly (p < 0.05) higher, but the diameter of CL was significantly (p < 0.01) lower compared at PG injection. At PG injection the diameter of largest follicle was non-significantly differences (p > 0.05) in between pregnant and non-pregnant cows. But at day 3 post PG injection it was significantly (p < 0.01) higher in pregnant cows compared to non-pregnant cows. The number of small, medium, and large follicles at PG injection and at day 3 post PG injection were non-significantly (p > 0.05) difference in between pregnant and non-pregnant buffalo cows. Finally, it is concluded that the CL was effectively regresses and induced the sign of heat in buffalo cows and after AI the cows were become pregnant with significant rate. The study will help to the veterinarian and researcher to know the efficacy of PG injection and AI for reproductive efficiency in buffalo cows.
A study was conducted to improve the reproductive performance of Korean native cows. Plasma progesterone concentrations were determined by radioimmunoassay during the estrous cycle and early pregnancy. Plasma progesterone concentrations during the estrous cycle in the 15 cows were the lowest (0.30ng/ml) at estrus, gradually increased after 6 days, remained high from 8 to 17 days (3.87~5.59ng/ml) and drastically decreased thereafter to reach minimal concentrations at the next estrus. Plasma progesterone concentrations of the 10 pregnant cows at 20 days after insemination were $5.82{\pm}1.33ng/ml$ (mean${\pm}$SD) and those of 10 non-pregnant cows were $0.30{\pm}0.21ng/ml$, respectively. Therefore, plasma progesterone concentrations in the pregnant cows at 20 days after insemination were significantly higher than in non-pregnant cows (p<0.001).
