  • Predicting monthly electricity price has been a significant factor of decision-making for plant resource management, fuel purchase plan, plans to plant, operating plan budget, and so on. In this paper, we propose a sophisticated prediction model in terms of the technique of modeling and the variety of the collected variables. The proposed model hybridizes the semi-supervised learning and the artificial neural network algorithms. The former is the most recent and a spotlighted algorithm in data mining and machine learning fields, and the latter is known as one of the well-established algorithms in the fields. Diverse economic/financial indexes such as the crude oil prices, LNG prices, exchange rates, composite indexes of representative global stock markets, etc. are collected and used for the semi-supervised learning which predicts the up-down movement of the price. Whereas various climatic indexes such as temperature, rainfall, sunlight, air pressure, etc, are used for the artificial neural network which predicts the real-values of the price. The resulting values are hybridized in the proposed model. The excellency of the model was empirically verified with the monthly data of electricity price provided by the Korea Energy Economics Institute.

  • Fine dust has recently become one of the greatest concerns of Korean people and has been a target of considerable efforts by governments and local governments. In the academic world, many researches have been carried out in relation to fine dust, but the research on the economic field has been relatively few. So we wanted to know how fine dust affects the economy. Big data of PM10 concentration for fine dust and fine dust theme stock price were collected for five years from 2013 to 2017. Regression analysis was performed using the linear regression model, the generalized least squares method. As a result, the change in the fine dust concentration was found to have a effect on the related theme stocks' price. When the fine dust concentration increased compared to the previous day, the fine dust theme stocks' price also showed a tendency to increase. Also, according to the analysis of stock price change from 2013 to 2017 based on fine dust theme stocks, companies with large regression coefficients were changed every year. Among them, the regression coefficients of Monalisa were repeatedly high in 2014, 2015, 2017, Samil Pharmaceutical in 2015, 2016 and 2017, and Welcron in 2016 and 2017, and the companies were judged to be sensitive to the concentration of fine dust. The companies that responded the most in the past 5 years were Wokong, Welcron, Dongsung Pharmaceutical, Samil Pharmaceutical, and Monalisa. If PM2.5 measurement data are accumulated enough, it would be meaningful to compare and analyze PM2.5 concentration with independent variables. In this study, only the fine dust concentration is used as an independent variable. However, it is expected that a more clear and well-explained result can be found by adding appropriate additional variables to increase the explanatory power.

  • This paper proposes inter-level causal reasoning to implement synergistic approach. We decompose KOSPI prediction model into economy and industry level. Two kinds of intra-level QCOM are combined in inter-level QCOM via Inter-level relations. Downward reasoning is achieved by propagating the disturbance in the higher level to lower level while upward reasoning is to analyze the reverse cases.

  • There has been a growing interest in IPOs (Initial Public Offerings) due to the profitable returns that IPO stocks can offer to investors. However, IPOs can be speculative investments that may involve substantial risk as well because shares tend to be volatile, and the supply of IPO shares is often highly limited. Therefore, it is crucially important that IPO investors are well informed of the issuing firms and the market before deciding whether to invest or not. Unlike institutional investors, individual investors are at a disadvantage since there are few opportunities for individuals to obtain information on the IPOs. In this regard, the purpose of this study is to provide individual investors with the information they may consider when making an IPO investment decision. This study presents a model that uses machine learning and text analysis to predict whether an IPO stock price would move up or down after the first 5 trading days. Our sample includes 691 Korean IPOs from June 2009 to December 2020. The input variables for the prediction are three tone variables created from IPO prospectuses and quantitative variables that are either firm-specific, issue-specific, or market-specific. The three prospectus tone variables indicate the percentage of positive, neutral, and negative sentences in a prospectus, respectively. We considered only the sentences in the Risk Factors section of a prospectus for the tone analysis in this study. All sentences were classified into 'positive', 'neutral', and 'negative' via text analysis using TF-IDF (Term Frequency - Inverse Document Frequency). Measuring the tone of each sentence was conducted by machine learning instead of a lexicon-based approach due to the lack of sentiment dictionaries suitable for Korean text analysis in the context of finance. For this reason, the training set was created by randomly selecting 10% of the sentences from each prospectus, and the sentence classification task on the training set was performed after reading each sentence in person. Then, based on the training set, a Support Vector Machine model was utilized to predict the tone of sentences in the test set. Finally, the machine learning model calculated the percentages of positive, neutral, and negative sentences in each prospectus. To predict the price movement of an IPO stock, four different machine learning techniques were applied: Logistic Regression, Random Forest, Support Vector Machine, and Artificial Neural Network. According to the results, models that use quantitative variables using technical analysis and prospectus tone variables together show higher accuracy than models that use only quantitative variables. More specifically, the prediction accuracy was improved by 1.45% points in the Random Forest model, 4.34% points in the Artificial Neural Network model, and 5.07% points in the Support Vector Machine model. After testing the performance of these machine learning techniques, the Artificial Neural Network model using both quantitative variables and prospectus tone variables was the model with the highest prediction accuracy rate, which was 61.59%. The results indicate that the tone of a prospectus is a significant factor in predicting the price movement of an IPO stock. In addition, the McNemar test was used to verify the statistically significant difference between the models. The model using only quantitative variables and the model using both the quantitative variables and the prospectus tone variables were compared, and it was confirmed that the predictive performance improved significantly at a 1% significance level.

  • As people invest most of their asset in real estate, there is high interest in changing in housing and real estate prices in the future for a digital economy. Various variables are affecting the housing and real estate market. Among them, four variables : households, productive population, interest rate and index price are chosen and analyzed representatively. This study is aimed to build decision model of apartment prices in Seoul empirically. From the analysis result the stock index is the only variable which is significant statistically to apartments in Seoul. From this study, the households and productive population show the same direction as shown in the previous studies before but not significant statistically. Among the independent variables, the stock index is chosen as a major variable of determinant of Seoul apartment price. From the result of the research, prediction of stock market should be preceded to forecast the movement of housing and real estate market in the future.

  • Real estate and artworks were considered challenging investment targets for individual investors because of their relatively high average transaction price despite their long investment history. Recently, the so-called fractional investment, generally known as investing in a share of the ownership right for real-life assets, etc., and most investors perceive that they actually own a piece (fraction) of the ownership right through their investments, is gaining popularity. Founded in 2016, Musicow started the first service that allows users to invest in copyright fees related to music distribution. Using the LSTM algorithm, one of the deep learning algorithms, this research predict the price of right to participate in copyright fees traded in Musicow. In addition to variables related to claims such as transfer price, transaction volume of claims, and copyright fees, comprehensive indicators indicating the market conditions for music copyright fees participation, exchange rates reflecting economic conditions, KTB interest rates, and Korea Composite Stock Index were also used as variables. As a result, it was confirmed that the LSTM algorithm accurately predicts the transaction price even in the case of fractional investment which has a relatively low transaction volume.

  • Recently, deep learning has shown high performance in various applications such as pattern analysis and image classification. Especially known as a difficult task in the field of machine learning research, stock market forecasting is an area where the effectiveness of deep learning techniques is being verified by many researchers. This study proposed a deep learning Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) model to predict the direction of stock prices. We then used the feature selection method to improve the performance of the model. We compared the performance of machine learning classifiers against CNN. The classifiers used in this study are as follows: Logistic Regression, Decision Tree, Neural Network, Support Vector Machine, Adaboost, Bagging, and Random Forest. The results of this study confirmed that the CNN showed higher performancecompared with other classifiers in the case of feature selection. The results show that the CNN model effectively predicted the stock price direction by analyzing the embedded values of the financial data

  • Automatic stock trading systems should be able to solve various kinds of optimization problems such as market trend prediction, stock selection, and trading strategies, in a unified framework. But most of the previous trading systems based on supervised learning have a limit in the ultimate performance, because they are not mainly concerned in the integration of those subproblems. This paper proposes a stock trading system, called R-Trader, based on reinforcement teaming, regarding the process of stock price changes as Markov decision process (MDP). Reinforcement learning is suitable for Joint optimization of predictions and trading strategies. R-Trader adopts two popular reinforcement learning algorithms, temporal-difference (TD) and Q, for selecting stocks and optimizing other trading parameters respectively. Technical analysis is also adopted to devise the input features of the system and value functions are approximated by feedforward neural networks. Experimental results on the Korea stock market show that the proposed system outperforms the market average and also a simple trading system trained by supervised learning both in profit and risk management.

  • Hidden Markov model (HMM) is a statistical model in which the system consists of two elements, hidden states and observable results. HMM has been actively used in various fields, especially for time series data in the financial sector, since it has a variety of mathematical structures. Based on the HMM theory, this research is intended to apply the domestic KOSPI200 stock index as well as the prediction of global stock indexes such as NIKKEI225, HSI, S&P500 and FTSE100. In addition, we would like to compare and examine the differences in results between the HMM and support vector regression (SVR), which is frequently used to predict the stock price, due to recent developments in the artificial intelligence sector.
