For the hydrogen liquefaction, the large amount of energy is consumed, due to precooling, liquefaction and o-p conversion processes. The aim of this work is to improve the performance of hydrogen liquefaction process by introducing the new energy saving processes, that are the liquid nitrogen precooling process by using LNG cold energy, and the new design of cold box insulation using cold air circulation. The results show that the indirect use of LNG cold energy in precooling process enables not only to get energy saving, but to make safer operation of liquefaction plant. In new cold box, the energy loss of equipments could be reduced by nearly 35%~50% compared to the present perlite insulation, if insulation structure is organised as 3mm steel wall/20cm PUF/5cm air/20cm PUF/equipment. Additionally the equipments installed in cold box can get cooling effect, if the temperature is higher than the temperature of cold air. The application of this results can gives to increase the liquid yield of about 50% substantially in industrial hydrogen liquefaction plant.
The aim of this study was to investigate the benefits of storing grapes through precooling, which is easier and more economical than the existing methods of storage. According to the analysis on the weight loss ratio, which is considered an important indicator of grape storage, the time at which the grapes reached 7% weight loss was prolonged by 5 to 10 days by the precooling method. Moreover, the percentage of abnormality on the 31st day of storage was at most 25% less in the precooled grapes than in the non-precooled grapes. In addition, the total bacterial count and the hardness of the precooled grapes were superior to those of the non-precooled grapes. Therefore, the precooling process markedly improved the commercial value of grapes.
For the hydrogen liquefaction, the large amount of energy is consumed, because precooling, liquefaction and ortho/para conversion heats should be eliminated. In this paper the basic design and thermal analysis are carried out to reduce the energy consumption by using LNG cold energy for precooling process in hydrogen liquefaction processes. The LNG cold energy utilization for hydrogen precooling enables not only to get energy saving for liquefaction, but to recover the wasted cold energy to sea water at the LNG terminal. The results show that the energy saving rate for liquefaction using LNG cold energy is almost 75% of current industrial hydrogen liquefaction plant. The demand flow-rate of LNG is only 15T/D for 1T/D hydrogen liquefaction.

Thermal analysis on a Linde-Hampson hydrogen liquefaction system using cryogenic refrigerators as precooling has been carried out. Three commercially available models of cryogenic refrigerators, such as CTI l020CP, CVI CGR009 and CVI CGR011, are considered in the performance analysis. The effect of ortho-para conversion process during hydrogen liquefaction is also studied in detail. The results obtained indicate that the optimal hydrogen mass flow rate and the optimal compressed pressure exist for the maximum hydrogen liquefaction rate. The optimal compressed pressure is increased in the range of 80 - 120 bar with an increase in the hydrogen mass flow rate. It is also found that better performance could be obtained with a cryogenic refrigerator, which produces high cooling capacity at precooling temperature in the range of 80 - 100 K.

The purpose of research is to understand the characteristics of refrigeration system having a liquid-vapor phase separator after expansion device and precooling heat exchanger. After expansion process of typical refrigerant of freezer, R134a, the cold vapor of the expanded refrigerant mixture is separated in the liquid-vapor separator and introduced in the precooling heat exchanger to enable the liquid refrigerant to be subcooled. The analysis results showed that the increasing rate of refrigeration capacity and COP can be 8.6% and 1.4%, each. The cause of these performance improvements is due to the difference of the slope of saturated vapor and saturated liquid lines in Mollier diagram of refrigerant.

As hydrogen utilization becomes more active recently, a large amount of hydrogen should be supplied safely. Among the three supply methods, liquefied hydrogen, which is an optimal method of storage and transportation convenience and high safety, has a low temperature of -253℃, which is complicated by the liquefaction process and consumes a lot of electricity, resulting in high operating costs. In order to reduce the electrical energy required for liquefaction and to raise the efficiency, hydrogen is cooled by using a mixed refrigerant in a precooling step. The electricity required for the precooling process of the mixed refrigerant can be reduced by using the cold energy of LNG. Actually, LNG cold energy is used in refrigeration warehouse and air liquefaction separation process, and a lot of power reduction is achieved. The purpose of this study is to replace the electric power by using LNG cold energy instead of the electric air-cooler to lower the temperature of the hydrogen and refrigerant that are increased due to the compression in the hydrogen liquefaction process. The required energy was obtained by simulating mixed refrigerant (MR) hydrogen liquefaction system with LNG cold heat and electric system. In addition, the power replacement rate of the electric process were obtained with the pressure, the temperature of LNG, the rate of latent heat utilization, and the hydrogen liquefaction capacity, Therefore, optimization of the hydrogen liquefaction system using LNG cold energy was carried out.

This study was conducted to determine effects of precooling and storage methods on asparagus spears' quality such as changes of fresh weight and color during simulated export distribution. Two types of precooling methods, air cooling and hydrocooling, were applied prior to packaging by comparing with no precooling as a control. Asparagus spears were packed with oxygen transmission rate (OTR) film for modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) and perforated (PF) film for a conventional packaging. All treatments were stored at $8^{\circ}C$ for 20 hours, and subsequently at $4^{\circ}C$ by final storage day, which is simulated distribution temperature condition from Yanggu, Korea to Shimonoseki, Japan. The half cooling time was 12 minutes for air cooling and 15 seconds for the hydrocooling, indicating precooling process of asparagus spears faster with the hydrocooling. Rates of respiration and ethylene production were lowest with hydrocooling. Fresh weight loss was higher, approximately 11%, at the control condition in conventional storage, compared with the MAP, less than 0.5%. Carbon dioxide and oxygen content in the MAP was in the permissible ranges for asparagus spears under recommended CA/MA conditions under both the air cooling and hydrocooling. Ethylene content in the film package was lower with the precooling treatment. Firmness of stems was lowest with the hydrocooling prior to the MAP. Visual quality, off-odor, and hue angle value were best with hydrocooling prior to the MAP. In conclusion, the combination of hydrocooling with the MAP is effective in preserving quality during the export distribution process.
This study was carried out to investigate the packaging status of the $Agaricus$$bisporus$ mushrooms and the benefits of storing them after precooling to improve their distribution system using small packages. The packaging status of the $Agaricus$$bisporus$ mushrooms was surveyed at a farm, a department store, a wholesale market, and a supermarket from May to September 2011. The packaging materials that were used were PS, carton, PP, LDPE, PLA, and PVC. The harvested $Agaricus$$bisporus$ mushrooms were precooled at $4^{\circ}C$ for three hours and were then stored at $20^{\circ}C$ for three days. The weight loss rate of the precooled sample was slightly lower than that of the unprecooled sample; conversely, the L value of the precooled sample was higher than that of the unprecooled sample. The ${\Delta}E$ value was lowest in the precooled sample after packaging. The precooling process effectively prolonged the shelf life and enhanced the quality of the$Agaricus$$bisporus$ mushrooms.

FPSO (Floating Production Strorage and Offloading) method for LNG industry is efficient and facile compared to onshore NG (Natural Gas) treatment facility. Five simple natural gas liquefaction cycles for FPSO are presented and simulated in this paper. SMR (Single Mixed Refrigerant) cycle, SNE (Single Nitrogen Expander) cycle, DNE (Double Nitrogen Expander) cycle, PNE (Precooled Nitrogen Expander) cycle, and PDNE (Precooled Double Nitrogen Expander) cycle are compared. Simple analysis results in this paper show that precooling process and adding an expander in the liquefaction cycle is an effective way to increase liquefaction efficiency.
A plant layout problem has a large impact on the overall construction cost of a plant. When determining a plant layout, various constraints associating with safety, environment, sufficient maintenance area, passages for workers, etc have to be considered together. In general plant layout problems, the main goal is to minimize the length of piping connecting equipments as satisfying various constraints. Since the process may suffer from the heat and friction loss, the piping length between equipments should be shorter. This problem can be represented by the mathematical formulation and the optimal solutions can be investigated by an optimization solver. General researches have overlooked many constraints such as maintenance spaces and safety distances between equipments. And, previous researches have tested benchmark processes. What the lack of general researches is that there is no realistic comparison. In this study, the plant layout of a real industrial C3MR (Propane precooling Mixed Refrigerant) process is studied. A MILP (Mixed Integer Linear Programming) including various constraints is developed. To avoid the violation of constraints, penalty functions are introduced. However, conventional optimization solvers handling the derivatives of an objective functions can not solve this problem due to the complexities of equations. Therefore, the PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization), which investigate an optimal solutions without differential equations, is selected to solve this problem. The results show that a proposed method contributes to saving the capital expenditures.
