The main purpose of this study is to address flooding resilient land use management strategy based on the distributional characteristics of storm damage areas in Gyeonggi-do. The employed methods are 1) Exploratory Spatial Data Analysis (ESDA) to understand the spatial patterns of storm damage areas occurred from 2005 to 2009, 2) Local Indicator of Spatial Association (LISA) to examine spatial autocorrelation existed in storm damage areas for the year of 2009. The results show that 1) crop land damage is very sensitive to heavy precipitation, 2) damaged buildings are found in all over the Gyeonggi areas, but relatively more damages are in the regions closed to the City of Seoul, 3) damaged roads-bridges, streams, and reaches are found in mostly rural areas, 4) building and crop land damage occurs mostly in lowlands with different spatial patterns. These findings imply that 1) it will be useful to consider the average distances and slopes of damaged building and crop lands from streams for the decision making of land use management strategy, 2) further management efforts are required in the north, east, and south regions of Gyeonggi areas to prevent roads-bridge, stream, and reach damages, 3) the present land use pattern needs to be carefully investigated by considering the damage clustered areas for the year of 2009 based on watershed and municipality boundaries.

Background: This study evaluated the atmospheric dispersion of radioactive material according to local weather conditions and emission conditions. Materials and Methods: Local weather conditions were defined as 8 patterns that frequently occur around the Kori Nuclear Power Plant and emission conditions were defined as 6 patterns from a combination of emission rates and the total number of particles of the $^{137}Cs$, using the WRF/HYSPLIT modeling system. Results and Discussion: The highest mean concentration of $^{137}Cs$ occurred at 0900 LST under the ME4_1 (main wind direction: SSW, daily average wind speed: $2.8ms^{-1}$), with a wide region of its high concentration due to the continuous wind changes between 0000 and 0900 LST; under the ME3 (NE, $4.1ms^{-1}$), the highest mean concentration of $^{137}Cs$ occurred at 1500 and 2100 LST with a narrow dispersion along a strong northeasterly wind. In the case of ME4_4 (S, $2.7ms^{-1}$), the highest mean concentration of $^{137}Cs$ occurred at 0300 LST because $^{137}Cs$ stayed around the KNPP under low wind speed and low boundary layer height. As for the emission conditions, EM1_3 and EM2_3 that had the maximum total number of particles showed the widest dispersion of $^{137}Cs$, while its highest mean concentration was estimated under the EM1_1 considering the relatively narrow dispersion and high emission rate. Conclusion: This study showed that even though an area may be located within the same radius around the Kori Nuclear Power Plant, the distribution and levels of $^{137}Cs$ concentration vary according to the change in time and space of weather conditions (the altitude of the atmospheric boundary layer, the horizontal and vertical distribution of the local winds, and the precipitation levels), the topography of the regions where $^{137}Cs$ is dispersed, the emission rate of $^{137}Cs$, and the number of emitted particles.
To investigate the characteristics of phases formed in iron carbides, super iron carbide was synthesized from hematite fines with $CO-H_2$ gas mixture after reduction under $H_2$ gas at $600^{\circ}C$. Before carburization, the surface of iron powder reduced was pre-treated in the atmosphere of 0.05 vol% $NH_3$-Ar. The synthesized iron carbides were comprehensively explored by C/S analyzer(Low C/S determinator), M$\"{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction patterns(XRD), scanning electron microscopy(SEM), transmission electron microscopy(TEM), and Raman spectroscopy at various reaction time of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, and 35 min, respectively. By adding a small amount of $NH_3$ gas, the super iron carbides containing 10 wt% carbon were synthesized, and its addition stabilized iron carbides. It was found that the $NH_3$ treatment played a major role in the formation of iron carbide without decomposition($Fe_3C{\to}$3Fe+C) of iron carbides and precipitation of free carbon. It also succeed to synthesize super iron carbide, $Fe_5C_2$, as a stable single phase without involving Fe and $Fe_3C$ phases.

The purpose of this study was to predict road surface temperature using high-resolution solar radiation data. The road surface temperature prediction model (RSTPM) was applied to predict road surface temperature; this model was developed based on the heat-balance method. In addition, using SOLWEIG (SOlar and LongWave Environmental Irradiance Geometry-model), the shadow patterns caused by the terrain effects were analyzed, and high-resolution solar radiation data with 10 m spatial resolution were calculated. To increase the accuracy of the shadow patterns and solar radiation, the day that was modeled had minimal effects from fog, clouds, and precipitation. As a result, shadow areas lasted for a long time at the entrance and exit of a tunnel, and in a high-altitude area. Furthermore, solar radiation clearly decreased in areas affected by shadows, which was reflected in the predicted road surface temperatures. It was confirmed that the road surface temperature should be high at topographically open points and relatively low at higher altitude points. The results of this study could be used to forecast the freezing of sections of road surfaces in winter, and to inform decision making by road managers and drivers.
Ternary Cu/ZnO/$Al_2O_3$ catalysts were prepared by a co-precipitation method. The precursor structures were monitored during the aging. The first precipitate structure was amorphous georgeite, which transformed into the unknown crystalline structure. The transition crystalline structure was assigned to the crystalline georgeite, which was suggested with elemental analysis, IR and XRD. The final structure of precursors was malachite. The Cu surface area of the resulting Cu/ZnO/$Al_2O_3$ was maximized to be 30.6 $m^2$/g at the aging time of 36 h. The further aging rapidly decreased Cu surface areas of Cu/ZnO/$Al_2O_3$. ZnO characteristic peaks in oxide samples almost disappeared after 24 h aging, indicating that ZnO was dispersed in around bulk CuO. TOF of the prepared catalysts of the Cu surface area ranges from 13.0 to 30.6 $m^2/g_{cat}$ was to be 2.67 ${\pm}$ 0.27 mmol/$m^2$.h in methanol synthesis at the condition of $250^{\circ}C$, 50 atm and 12,000 mL/$g_{cat}$. h irrespective of the XRD and TPR patterns of CuO and ZnO structure in CuO/ZnO/$Al_2O_3$. The pH of the precipitate solution during the aging time can be maintained at 7 by $CO_2$ bubbling into the precipitate solution. Then, the decrease of Cu surface area by a long aging time can be prevented and minimize the aging time to get the highest Cu surface area.
The homogeneity analysis of temporal (monthly, seasonal and annual) climate aridity index trend was accomplished for 43 climate measurement stations in South Korea. Furthermore, 43 stations were grouped into 9 different regions and the temporal and regional homogeneity of climate aridity index trends in each region and entire 9 regions were analyzed. For analysis, monthly, seasonal and annual climate aridity indexes of 43 study stations were estimated using precipitation and potential evapotranspiration calculated from FAO Penman-Monteith equation. The Mann-Kendall statistical test for significant trend was accomplished using the estimated climate aridity indexes and the results of trend test (Z scores) were used to analyze the temporal and regional homogeneity of climate aridity index trends. The study results showed the temporal and regional homogeneity of climate aridity index trends for individual and entire 9 regions. However, the homogeneity and the extent of aridity index trend showed different patterns temporally and regionally.

The need to improve the performance of the dust collector by increasing the fine dust pollution in Korea is eminent. In this study, electrostatic spray wet electrostatic precipitator is used to remove Particulate Matter (PM). In order to enter the Cone-jet mode, which is the most stable spray mode among the various modes of electrostatic spraying, an appropriate voltage-flow condition must be satisfied, and a voltage-flow interval enabling this can be expressed as Stability Island. The voltage at which the conduit mode starts in the Stability Island section is referred to as the electrostatic spray minimum voltage (Onset Voltage). However, the conventional electrostatic spray is uses a very low flowrate, at most few millilitres per minute. The use of much higher flowrates has introduced different patterns of electrospray modes. In this study, the different spray modes will be studied in detail.
Climate change mainly due to the increase of green house gases cause different patterns of water cycle within the basin. However, it is common that current planning and management practices do not consider the effect of the climate change. So, this study evaluated the effect of climate change on the water circulation within the watershed. This study used several GCM simulations for the double $CO_2$condition for the generation of temperature and rainfall series using the Markov chain. Daily runoff series for 100 years were generated using a rainfall-runoff model. As results. annual temperature increase by +3.2 ∼+4.6$^{\circ}C$, annual precipitation change -7 ∼ +8 %, annual runoff change -14 ∼ +7 %, and potential evapotranspiration amount change +3 ∼+4 % for the change of 1 $^{\circ}C$ are found to be expected depending on GCM simulations. Even though the simulation results are very dependent on the GCM predictions considered, overall variability of runoff is expected to become higher than the current state.

A climate change-driven increased hydrological variability has been widely acknowledged over the past decades. In this regards, rainfall simulation techniques are being applied in many countries to consider the increased variability. This study proposed a Homogeneous Hidden Markov Chain(HMM) designed to recognize rather complex patterns of rainfall with discrete hidden states and underlying distribution characteristics via mixture probability density function. The proposed approach was applied to Seoul and Jeonju station to verify model's performance. Statistical moments(e.g. mean, variance, skewness and kurtosis) derived by daily and seasonal rainfall were compared with observation. It was found that the proposed HMM showed better performance in terms of reproducing underlying distribution characteristics. Especially, the HMM was much better than the existing Markov Chain model in reproducing extremes. In this regard, the proposed HMM could be used to evaluate a long-term runoff and design flood as inputs.
Bio-grouting based on microbial-induced calcite precipitation (MICP) is recently emerging as a novel and environmentally friendly technique for improvement of coarse-grained ground. To date, the mechanical behaviour of bio-grouted coarse-grained soil with different calcite contents and grain sizes still remains poorly understood. The primary objective of this study is to investigate the influence of calcite content on the mechanical properties of bio-grouted coarse-grained soil with different grain sizes. This is achieved through an integrated study of uniaxial loading experiments of bio-grouted coarse-grained soil, 3D digitization of the grains in conjunction with discrete element modelling (DEM). In the DEM model, aggregates were represented by clump logic based on the 3D morphology digitization of the typical coarse-grained aggregates while the CaCO3 was represented by small-sized bonded particle model. The computed stress-strain relations and failure patterns of the bio-grouted coarse-grained soil were validated against the measured results. Both experimental and numerical investigation suggest that aggregate sizes and calcite content significantly influence the mechanical behaviour of bio-cemented aggregates. The strength of the bio-grouted coarse-grained soil increases linearly with calcite content, but decreases non-linearly with the increasing particle size for all calcite contents. The experimental-based DEM approach developed in this study also offers an optional avenue for the exploring of micro-mechanisms contributing to the mechanical response of bio-grouted coarse-grained soils.
