  • In this paper, we proposed a methodology for estimating rainfall intensity using a W-band FMCW automotive radar signal which is the core technology of autonomous driving car. By comparing and analyzing the results of rainfall and non-rainfall observation, we found that the reflection intensity of the automotive radar is changed with rainfall intensity. We could confirm the possibility of deriving the quantitative precipitation estimation using the methodology derived from this result. In addition it can be possible to develop a new paradigm of precipitation observation technique by observing various events together with the weather radar and the ground rainfall observation equipment.

  • Methods used for averaging PH's of rainwater and site representation have been studied, Statistical analysis was attempted regarding effects of ionic components on PH's utilizing 847 data altogether obtained in two years, 1984 and 1985. The outcome of the study may be assumarized as follows: 1. Methods for Averaging PH Volume weighted method is considered to be acceptable providing that precipitation is measured at the same time when the samples are taken. Without precipitation data a simple averaging method should be the next choice. 2. Site Representation A statistical method used for optimizing a monitoring newtork was applied using the data collected. Because of a limited number of data, no discernible conclusion can be reached suggesting that the method can serve as a good guide when the data base becomes more reliable. 3. A good correlation appears to exist betwen conductivities and ionic components in rainwater. It would, therefore, be possible to certain extend to estimate ionic concentrations from conductivity measurements by correlation equations. 4. The acidity of rainwater is effected by $SO_4^{2-}, NO_3^-, Cl^- and NH_4^+ with SO_4^{2-}$ being the most significant as demonstrated by standardized regression analysis.

  • In thisy study the quantities of the inorganic ions in the precipitation of the rural area of Choongbook Province are analyzed. The sampling period of the study was between February and June of 1991. Anion concentrations were determined by ion chromatography. Metal cation concentrations were analyzed by atomic absorption spectroscopy. Nessler's reagent was used for ammonium ion. The average pH of the rain was 4.6. Occasionally, however, acidic rain of pH 3.5 was found. The ratio of anion/cation was 0.57, where the concentrations of anion was much smaller than the same of the cation. This was attributed to the high concentrations of the ammonium ion. Ion concentrations were higher in February and March than other months. Also, it was found that the $2[SO_4^{2-} + [NO_3^-]-[NH_4^+]$ gave the highest correlation with the pH values.

  • A calculation technique which estimates natural recharge using groundwater level change was proposed and prepared with the existing techniques using groundwater recession curve during dry days. As a part of estimating natural groundwater recharge nation wide, the reliable data from the national groundwater monitoring network were used and the methodology was applied to the three sites which have enough data (Chungju, Jinju and Kwangju). For this study, seasonal variation of groundwater level change, an analysis of lagging time on groundwater level and cumulative precipitation, and a comparative study for groundwater recharge were conducted.

  • For volume reduction of the wastewater generated on washing the soil contaminated with cobalt, recycling and reuse experiments of the wastewater were executed. Also. the soil remediation efficiency by repetitive washing with fresh citric acid was analyzed. The soil around TRIGA was sampled for the experiment. Results of recycling experiment by replacement-precipitation method were as follows. The remediation efficiency of 1st recycling wastewater was 97% and that of 2nd recycling wastewater was 94%. Also, To obtain remediation efficiency over than 90%, the 5th repetitive washing with fresh citric acid was needed.

  • Metal sorption onto the ICS (Iron oxide coated sand) was studied in batch experiments. Heavy metal cations such as Cd, Pb, and Cu, and a metal anion, As, which sporadically exist in mine sites, were tested for the sorptive removal by ICS. In low pH conditions As showed the highest removal efficiency compared to the other metal cations. And the sorption removal of As was apparently pH-independent reaction. However, removal of metal cations increased with pH and above pH 7 most metal cations showed very low soluble concentrations after treatment. Such a high removal ratio of metal cations above the neutral pH appeared predominantly due to precipitation.

  • Bioremediation of trace metals in groundwater may require the manipulation of redox conditions via the injection of a carbon source. To simulate the numerous biogeochemical processes that will occur during the bioremediation of trace-metal-contaminated aquifers, a reactive transport model has been developed. The model consists of a set of coupled mass balance equations, accounting for advection, hydrodynamic dispersion, and a kinetic formulation of the biological or chemical transformations affecting an organic substrate, electron acceptors, corresponding reduced species, and trace metal contaminants of interest, uranium in this study. The redox conditions of the domain are characterized by estimating the pE, based on the concentrations of the dominant terminal electron acceptor and its corresponding reduced specie. This pE and the concentrations of relevant species we then used by a modified version of MINTEQA2, which calculates the speciation/sorption and precipitation/dissolution of the species of interest under equilibrium conditions. Kinetics of precipitation/dissolution processes are described as being proportional to the difference between the actual and calculated equilibrium concentration.

  • After kaolin clay was compulsorily contaminated with Co$^{2+}$ion, the remediation characteristics by electrokinetic method were analyzed. Ethanoic buffer was injected in the soil column and $CH_3$COOH was continuously inputted in cathode reservoir to restrain the pH elevation. Since pH of the cathode side of the soil column was 4.0 at initial and was restrained by 6.5 at 43.6 hours, Precipitation, Co(OH)$_2$, was not formed in the column. Effluent rate increased with time passage and remediation in the column in initial time was mainly controlled by ion migration. 13.1% of total in the soil column was remediated in 10 hours, and the 6.8% of total in 20.8 hours, and the 71.7% of total in 43.6 hours, and the 94.6% of total in 43.6 hours. Meanwhile, the residual concentrations in the column calculated by the developed model were similar to those by experiment.t.

  • A long-term in situ observation was carried out in the Ice-valley at Milyang in order to explain the factors and processes associated with the summertime ice formation. The variation of temperature inside Ice-valley in relation with ice formation in summer time was found to depend on precipitation rate in spring and cold air sinking in autumn and winter. The rate of temperature rising tends to correspond to sensible heat release depending on the precipitation amount at the freezing location. The reason of the cold air accumulation in a talus in the Ice-valley is the cold air sinking over the surface of talus due to the occurrence of outside clod air mass and the accumulated cold air from autumn to spring flow outside at the bottom of talus. The out-flowing cold air can result in the ice formation in the hot summer.

  • In this study, a semi-analytical model to address groundwater level fluctuations in response to precipitations and its infiltration is developed through mathematical modeling based on water balance equation. The developed model is applied to a prediction of groundwater level fluctuations in Hongcheon area. The developed model is calibrated through a nonlinear parameter estimator by using daily precipitation rates and groundwater fluctuations data of a same year 2003. The calibrated input parameters are directly applied to the prediction of groundwater fluctuations of year 2004 and the simulated curve successfully mimics the observed. The developed model is also applied to practical problems such as a prediction of a effect of reduced recharge due to surface coverage change and a induced water level reduction. Through this study, we found that recharge to precipitation ratio is not a constant and may be a function of a precipitation pattern.
