  • A study was carried out to investigate the nutritive value and utilization of three grass species, batiki grass (lschaemum aristatum var. indicum), guinea grass (Panicum maximum) and signal grass (Bracharia decumbens) by growing goats. Eighteen growing crossbred goats $(Anglo-Nubian{\times}Fiji\;local)$ of between 9-11 months of age and pre-trial average live weight of $9.50{\pm}1.60kg$ were divided on the basis of weight to three treatment groups in a completely randomized design. The grasses constituted the diets and they were harvested fresh and chopped into pieces before they were offered to the goats. Chemical composition of the grasses, DMI, body weight gain (BWG) and apparent nutrient digestibility coefficients were measured. The grasses had similar DM content. The CP content of the grasses was in the range of 8.3-11.2%. Crude fiber (CF) content was between 30.9-35.2%. Ether extract (EE) was low with a range of 1.2-1.8%. Nitrogen free extract (NFE) was similar (40.9%) for batiki and guinea grasses, while signal grass had more NFE content (51.1%). The grasses are good sources of minerals (ash). OM content was higher in signal grass while guinea and batiki grasses had similar OM content. The goats on signal grass had higher DMI than those on batiki and guinea grasses (p<0.05). The goats on batiki grass had lower average BWG (p<0.05) than those on guinea and signal grasses. Nutrients digestibility were significantly (p<0.05) higher in the goats on signal grass compared to those on guinea and batiki grasses. The goats on guinea grass were better (p<0.05) in the digestibility of CP, OM, NFE and ME than those on batiki grass. However, goats on batiki were significantly better (p<0.05) in digestibility of CF than those on guinea grass. Signal and guinea grasses had more DCP than batiki grass. DE was lower in batiki grass (p<0.05) than in guinea and signal grasses. There was no significant difference (p>0.05) between batiki and guinea grasses in TON. Data obtained in this experiment demonstrated that signal grass is better than guinea and signal in the nutrition of growing goats in the tropical environment of Samoa. It had the highest nutritive value, better apparent digestibility coefficients which have better growth rate and feed efficiency. In ranking, signal grass was better than guinea and batiki grasses, while guinea grass was better than batiki in nutritive value in the parameters measured. For future pasture establishment in Samoa, signal grass is recommended for consideration because of its higher nutritive value as a replacement for batiki, the most predominant grass.

  • This paper describes the design principles and methods of electronic processor for thermal imager with the SPRITE detector, operating in the 8-12 micron band. The thermal imager consists of a optical scanner containing the detector and an electrical signal processor. The optical scanner utilizing rotating polygon and oscillating mirror, is 2-dimensional serial/parallel scan type using 5 elements of the detector. And the electronic processor has pre-processing of 5 chnanel's thermal signal from the detector, and performs digital scan conversion to reform the parallel data stream into serial analog data compatible with conventional RS-170 video. Through the designed electronic processor, we have acquired a satisfactory thermal image. And the MRTD (Minimum Resolvable Temperature Difference) is 0.5$^{\circ}$K at 7.5 cycles/mm.

  • In this paper, a new pre-processing algorithm is proposed to improve the performance of stereo acoustic echo canceller. The proposed algorithm has the improved performance by the estimation error reduction of filter coefficient using input signal which was reduced reverberation of room in the basis MINT (Mu1tip1e-input/output Inverse Theorem) filtering. For real stereo speech signal and real room impulse response the results of simulation, we showed that the proposed method could improved 3∼5 dB ERLE (Echo Return Loss Enhancement) regardless of NLMS (Normalized Least Mean Square) and Projection adaptive algorithm.

  • This paper proposes on the blocking method of Internet harmful sex sites by accoustic signal processing. Pre-existing methods mainly focused on directory-based blocking and words-based blocking. But these methods are not completely blocked the Internet harmful sites. Therefore, we propose the content-based blocking method which compose of the image-based blocking and the accoustic-based blocking. In this paper, we mainly deal with the accoustic -based blocking method. Finally, the effectiveness of this system is demonstrated by several experiments.

  • In this paper we have presented a condition monitoring method of check valve using neural network. The acoustic emission sensor was used to acquire the condition signals of check valve in direct vessel injection (DVI) test loop. The acquired sensor signal pass through a signal conditioning which are consisted of steps; rejection of background noise, amplification, analogue to digital conversion, extract of feature points. The extracted feature points which represent the condition of check valve was utilized input values of fault diagnosis algorithms using pre-learned neural network. The fault diagnosis algorithm proceeds fault detection, fault isolation and fault identification within limited ranges. The developed algorithm enables timely diagnosis of failure of check valve’s degradation and service aging so that maintenance and replacement could be preformed prior to loss of the safety function. The overall process has been experimented and the results are given to show its effectiveness.

  • The durability of head/disk interface is an important issue for hard disk drives. Currently, there are several means of assessing the performance and integrity of the head/disk interface. In this work Track Average Amplitude(TAA) signal was used to analyzed the head/disk interface with respect to variations in disk velocity, slider pre-load and preformed scratch on the disk. Particularly, TAA variation due to disk defect in the form of a scratch was investigated.

  • Displacement estimation is a crucial step in ultrasonic strain imaging. The displacement between a pre- and postcompression signal in the current data window is estimated by first shifting the postcompression signal by the displacement obtained in the previous data window to reduce their decorrelation and then determining the remaining part of the displacement through autocorrelation and conversion of phase difference into time delay. However, since strain image quality tends to vary with the amount of compression applied, we propose two new methods for enhancing strain image quality, i.e., displacement normalization and adaptive persistence. Both in vitro and in vivo experiments are carried out to acquire ultrasound data and produce strain images in real time under the application of quasi static compression. The experimental results demonstrate that the methods are quite effective in improving strain image quality and thus can be applied to implementing an ultrasound elasticity imaging system that operates in real time.

  • In this paper, we propose a sparse signal reconstruction method referred to as the matching pursuit with a pruning-based tree search (PTS-MP). Two key ingredients of PTS-MP are the pre-selection to put a restriction on columns of the sensing matrix to be investigated and the tree pruning to eliminate unpromising paths from the search tree. In our simulations, we confirm that PTS-MP is effective in recovering sparse signals and outperforms conventional sparse recovery algorithms.

  • Many control techniques have been proposed in order to improve the control performance of discrete-time domain control system. In the position control system using a DC servo motor as a driver, the response-characteristic of system is controlled by the PID controller. In the PID control system, the transient response characteristic is more increased and settling time gets longer if gains of PID controller are unsuitable. In this paper, therefore, a expended PID control system is constructed by inserting a pre-compensator at output terminal of PID controller. It is implemented by using the double layers neural network. Form the results of computer simulation in the proposed control algorithm, its usefulness is verified.
