Design of an Inductive Coupler for Broadband Powerline Communication for Real-Time Monitoring of Distribution Automation System (배전자동화시스템의 실시간 감시를 위한 광대역 전력선통신용 유도성 커플러 설계)

  • In this paper, inductive couplers realizing broadband powerline communication (PLC) are fabricated using Fe-based nanocrystalline alloy and their performance is analyzed. As a result of the field tests using the distribution automation system (DAS), the couplers achieve comparatively excellent data communication in the principal frequency band of broadband PLC although there is a difference in communication rate depending on the presence or absence of a branch. In addition, it has been confirmed that the communication speed is maintained for a real-time transmission even in a high current environment although there is a difference in the transmission rate depending on the distance. Hence, it is considered that the inductive couplers can be used as a core device to realize the intelligent power network by exploiting them for the monitoring and remote controlling of the power plant equipments for the DAS located in the inaccessible areas.

  • In this paper, we present the design of a system on a chip(SoC) based on Powerline Communication for Power-IT. The SoC deals with power information obtained from analog to digital converter and transmits this data via powerline. We integrate main processor, ADC and PLC function into a chip. Also a FPGA-based emulation system is introduced to evaluate a proposed SoC architecture.

  • We propose an Power line communication, also known as Power line Digital Subscriber Line (PDSL), mains communication, power line telecom (PLT), or power line networking (PLN), or Broadband over Power Lines (BPL) are systems for carrying data on a conductor also used for electric power transmission. Power line communications can also be used to interconnect home computers, peripherals or other networked consumer peripherals. Specifications for power line home networking have been developed by a number of different companies within the framework of the HomePlug Powerline Alliance, the Universal Powerline Association and the HD-PLC Alliance.

  • In this paper, a multi-modem for process automation of non-destructive inspection (NDI) which possibly generates various kinds of data is implemented and verified. Here, a variety of data such as control signals, text data, image data generated by inspection devices, sensors, computers are transmitted to the multi-modem via serial, Ethernet, and coaxial cable. We exploit a communication network in which powerlines are used as backbone transmission media. Thus, the implemented multi-modem has various ports and corresponding interfaces for data transmission. As a result of practical experiments, the multi-modem maintains almost constant data rate with little waveform distortion. In addition, the experiments confirm that the modem operates normally under extreme variation of temperature. It is, therefore, considered that the multi-modem can contribute significantly to implement powerline communication (PLC)-based process automation for NDI in which various kinds of data are practically generated.

A Study on Implementation of Powerline Carrier Modem using 5-ary Frequency Shift Keying Method (5-ary 주파수 천이 키잉 방식을 이용한 전력선 캐리어 모뎀 구현에 관한 연구)

  • In this paper, we use the 5-ary frequency shift keying method for robust powerline communication. To transmit the data by the 3-ary carrires among 5-ary carrirers and three carriers are 115kHz, 120kHz and 125kHz. Each time of three carrires is 0.33ms and total transmitting time duration from zero crossing point has 1ms. We use the dummy carriers which are 50kHz and 350kHz for monitoring the powerline channel state, dummy signal duration is received during 1ms. Experimentation result is shown that the implemented PLC transceiver has better than chirp transceiver at the capacitive load testing in spite of low transmission power.

  • In this paper, we have represented basic experiment results for the application of electric vehicle powerline communication using an induction type coupler. The coupler was fabricated using nano-crystalline alloy and it was applied to the charging system of electric vehicles to measure the communication performance. Experimental results showed a channel bandwidth over 48 Mbps.

  • Nowadays, Power Line Communication (PLC) is gaining high attention from industry and electric supply companies for the services like demand response, demand side management and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI). The reliable services to consumers using PLC can be provided by utilizing an efficient PLC channel for which sophisticated channel modeling is very important. This paper presents characterization of a Low Voltage (LV) access network for Narrowband Power Line Communications (NB-PLC) using transmission line (TL) theory and a Simulink model. The TL theory analysis not only includes the constant parameters but frequency selectivity is also introduced in these parameters such as resistance, conductance and impedances. However, the proposed Simulink channel model offers an analysis and characterization of capacitive coupler, network impedance and channel transfer function for NB-PLC. Analysis of analytical and simulated results shows a close agreement of the channel transfer function. In the absence of a standardized NBPLC channel model, this research work can prove significant in improving the efficiency and accuracy of NB-PLC communication transceivers for Smart Grid communications.

  • With the ever increasing demand for data communication methods, powerline communication has become in interesting alternative method for data communication in home networking. For the purpose of home safety, several sensors will be installed at door, windows, gas alarm, etc. When considering home networking, the sensor data as well as other types of data should be supported in powerline communication. Usually the sensor data do not have priority over isochronous traffics (voice, video traffic), but in the case of urgent situation at home, the data of sensor being aware of the situation should be transmitted earlier than others. The objective in this paper is to develop a method for supporting an urgent data in home networking using powerline communication. We propose a modified algorithm of HomePlug 1.0 and show the results of computer simulation.

  • 최근들어 PLC 기술의 성능 및 안정성이 보완됨에 따라 배전선로 및 설비 감시를 위한 기존의 통신방식을 대체할 수 있게 되면서 PLC를 이용한 배전선로 통신망을 구성하는 연구가 활발히 진행중에 있다. 본 논문에서는 고속PLC를 이용하여 배전통신망을 구성할 경우 원활한 시스템을 구성하기 위한 Flooding 방지 프로토콜을 제안하고 시뮬레이션을 통해 고속 PLC망의 성능을 분석하고자 한다.

  • This paper deals a watt-hour meter monitor system applying a Power Line Communication (PLC) MODEM and a Data Concentrator Unit (DCU) which can apply to Internet map based Graphical User Interface (GUI). The PLC MODEM is profitable by saving the cost of installing dedicated wiring, and Internet map GUI also is able to contribute an easy access to monitoring system for non export users. This system makes it possible to monitor the amount of electricity of previous/ current month metering data via Internet mapping service. The implement system can easily apply a PC-management for the electric charges and maintenance with gathering the metering data.
