In this paper, a new power spectral estimation technique is presented. At first, by transforming the original data with the Karhunen-Loeve Transform(KLT), we can reduce the amount of the redundant information. Next, by modeling the transformed data by means of the autoregressive(AR) model and then applying the least-squares parameter estimation algorithm to this model, even more accurate spectrum estimates can be obtained. The KLT is the optimum transform for signal representation with respect to the mean-square error criterion. And the least-squares method is used to overcome the inherent shortcomings of popular burg algorithm.

The fact that material degradation can be evaluated by measuring nonlinear acoustic effect has been proposed by previous studies. The most conventional method to measure nonlinear acoustic effect is to measure the absolute magnitude of fundamental and $2^{nd}$ order harmonic frequency component in the propagated ultrasonic wave. For this aim, power spectral analysis technique has been used widely. However, the power spectral analysis has fatal disadvantage that the gaussian additive noise superimposed in the wave signal remains in the power spectrum domain. Moreover, the magnitude of $2^{nd}$ order harmonic frequency component generated by nonlinear effect is so small that it may be suppressed by the noise remained in the power spectrum. In order to overcome this problem, this paper proposes an alternative method using bispectrum analysis, which can reduce the effect of addictive gaussian noise and. the nonlinear parameter can be obtained more stably. Simulations showed that the proposed method can obtain the value of nonlinear parameter near to the true value in the case of low SNR signal. Also, in order to confirm the usefulness of our method in actual case, we compared the nonlinear parameter obtained by using both of power spectral and bispectral analysis for several specimen intentionally degraded by fatigue load.
For free surface flow problem, a high-order spectral/boundary element method is adapted as an efficient numerical tool. This method is one of the most efficient numerical methods by which the nonlinear gravity waves can be simulated and hydrodynamic forces also can be calculated in time domain. In this method, the velocity potential is expressed as the sum of surface potential and body potential. Then, surface potential is solved by using the high-order spectral method and body potential is solved by using the high-order boundary element method. Using the combination of these two methods, the free surface flow problems of a submerged moving body are solved in time domain. In the present study, lifting surface theory is added to the former work to include effects of lift force. Therefore, a new formulation for the basic mathematical theory is introduced to contain the lift body in calculation.
Transient electromagnetic (TEM) method is also affected by cultural and natural electromagnetic (EM) noises, since it uses part of the broadband ($10^{-2}$ to $10^5Hz$) spectrum. Especially, predominant EM noise which affects a moving transmitter-receiver TEM system is sensor motion-induced noise. This noise is caused by the sensor motion in the earth magnetic field. The technique for reducing the sensor motion-induced EM noise presented in this paper is based on Halverson stacking. This Halverson stacking is generally used in a time-domain induced polarisation (IP) system to reject DC offset and linear drift. According to spectrum analysis of the vertical component of sensor motion-induced noise, the frequency range affected by the motion of an EM sensor is less than about 700 Hz in this study. With the decrease of the frequency, the spectral power caused by the motion of a sensor increases. For example, at the frequency of 200 Hz, the spectral power of the sensor motion-induced noise is $-90dBVrms^2$ while the spectral power of the EM noise measured with a fixed sensor on the ground is $-105dBVrms^2$, and at the frequency of 100 Hz, the spectral power of the sensor motion-induced noise is $-70dBVrms^2$ while the spectral power of the EM noise measured with a fixed sensor on the ground is $-105dBVrms^2$. With applying Halverson stacking to an artificial noise transient generated by adding a noise-free transient to sensor motion-induced noise measured without pulsing, it is shown that the filtered transient is nearly consistent with the noise-free transient within a delay time of $0.5{{\mu}sec}$. The inversion obtained from this filtered transient is in accord with the true model with an error of 5%.
Recently, the ability of earthquake detection in the Kyungsang Basin of southeastern Korean Peninsula is greatly improved since seismic stations including seismic network of KIGAM(Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources) have been significantly increased. However, a large number of signals from explosions are recorded because of frequent medium to large chemical explosions. The discrimination between natural earthquakes and explosions in the Basin has become an important issue. High frequency local records from 43 earthquakes and 43 explosions with comparable magnitude are selected to establish a reliable discrimination technique in the Basin. Several discrimination techniques in spectral domain using spectral amplitude ratios among Pg, Sg, and Lg waves are widely examined with tile selected data. Among them the Pg/Lg spectral ratio method is appeared to be a good discrimination technique to improve the discrimination power. Multivariate discriminant analysis is also applied to the Pg/Lg spectral ratios. The discrimination power of the Pg/Lg ratios for distance corrected three component record compared to uncorrected vertical component one shows distinct improvement. In the frequency band 4 to 14 Hz, Pg/Lg spectral ratio for distance corrected three component record provides discrimination power with a total misclassification probability of only 0.89%.

Powerline communications (PLC) is a promising medium for network access technology where smart grid aided network services can be provided. In the presence of frequency selective fading in the PLC channel, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) is a technique for reliable communications. This paper presents a spectral efficient method using a superimposed hidden pilot for OFDM-based PLC systems. Based on the scheme using a hidden pilot, it is possible to estimate the channel with no consumption of bandwidth, but with utilization of power allocated to the hidden pilot. Computer simulations showed that the proposed scheme provides higher achievable data rate than that of the conventional schemes in low voltage and medium voltage transmission lines.
This paper proposes a structural damage identification approach based on the power spectral density transmissibility (PSDT), which is developed to formulate the relationship between two sets of auto-spectral density functions of output responses. The accuracy of response reconstruction with PSDT is investigated and the damage identification in structures is conducted with measured acceleration responses from the damaged state. Numerical studies on a seven-storey plane frame structure are conducted to investigate the performance of the proposed damage identification approach. The initial finite element model of the structure and measured acceleration measurements from the damaged structure are used for the identification with a dynamic response sensitivity-based model updating method. The simulated damages can be identified accurately without and with a 5% noise effect included in the simulated responses. Experimental studies on a steel plane frame structure in the laboratory are performed to further verify the accuracy of response reconstruction with PSDT and validate the proposed damage identification approach. The locations of the introduced damage are detected accurately and the stiffness reductions in the damaged elements are identified close to the true values. The identification results demonstrated the accuracy of response reconstruction as well as the correctness and efficiency of the proposed damage identification approach.
Vibration-based Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) systems use field measurements of operational signals, which are distorted by noise from many sources. Reducing this noise allows a more accurate assessment of the original "clean" signal and improves analysis results. The implementation of a noise reduction methodology for the Modal Distribution Method (MDM) is reported here. The spectral subtraction method is a popular broadband noise reduction technique used in speech signal processing. Its basic principle is to subtract the magnitude of the noise from the total noisy signal in the frequency domain. The underlying assumption of the method is that noise is additive and uncorrelated with the signal. In speech signal processing, noise can be measured when there is no signal. In the MDM, however, the magnitude of the noise profile can be estimated only from the magnitude of the Power Spectral Density (PSD) at higher frequencies than the frequency range of the true signal associated with structural vibrations under the additional assumption of white noise. The implementation of the spectral subtraction method to MDM may decrease the energy of the individual mode. In this work, a modification of the spectral subtraction method is introduced that enables the conservation of the energies of individual modes. The main difference is that any (negative) bars with a height below zero after subtraction are set to the absolute value of their height. Both noise reduction methods are implemented in the MDM, and an application example is presented that demonstrates its effectiveness when used with a signal corrupted by noise.

We propose a general framework for studying resource allocation problem and the tradeoff between spectral efficiency (SE) and energy efficiency (EE) for downlink traffic in power domain-non-orthogonal multiple access (PD-NOMA) and device to device (D2D) based heterogeneous cloud radio access networks (H-CRANs) under imperfect channel state information (CSI). The aim is jointly optimize radio remote head (RRH) selection, spectrum allocation and power control, which is formulated as a multi-objective optimization (MOO) problem that can be solved with weighted Tchebycheff method. We propose a low-complexity algorithm to solve user association, spectrum allocation and power coordination separately. We first compute the CSI for RRHs. Then we study allocating the cell users (CUs) and D2D groups to different subchannels by constructing a bipartite graph and Hungrarian algorithm. To solve the power control and EE-SE tradeoff problems, we decompose the target function into two subproblems. Then, we utilize successive convex program approach to lower the computational complexity. Moreover, we use Lagrangian method and KKT conditions to find the global optimum with low complexity, and get a fast convergence by subgradient method. Numerical simulation results demonstrate that by using PD-NOMA technique and H-CRAN with D2D communications, the system gets good EE-SE tradeoff performance.

The spectral responsivity of solar cells has been measured under high background irradiance using an LED-based differential spectral responsivity Comparator (DSR-C). The comparator developed is fully automated and has some advantages: It does not need a chopper to modulate the light. Unlike the conventional method, it does not require a monochromator to select wavelength. It covers a wavelength range up to 1200 nm. The wavelength range of the comparator is limited by the spectral power distribution of the LEDs and the spectral responsivity of the standard detector. An active temperature control was utilized to meet the specified standard conditions of solar cell test. This work shows the effect of different levels of background irradiance on the spectral responsivity and the importance of same background irradiance for solar cell test as specified by the corresponding standard.
