Analysis of Voltage Regulation by DSTATCOM - Using the EMTDC Program

  • The DSTATCOM(Distribution Static Synchronous Compensator) is one of the Custom Power Devices that can regulate voltage. The DSTATCOM operates as a shunt connected static var compensator whose capacitive or inductive output current can be controlled independent of the system voltage. The magnitude of the compensated voltage is limited by characteristics of the system and the load. Compensation capability of the DSTATCOM which can inject 1 MVAR reactive power was simulated by EMTDC under several conditions. This paper analyzes the effect of the DSTATCOM's compensation considering the length and kind of distribution line, the power factor and magnitude of the load, and the duration and magnitude of the voltage variation.

해양 소수력발전용 유도발전기의 최적 무효전력 산정방식에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Optimal Reactive Power Calculation Method of Induction Generator for Marine Small Hydraulic Power)

  • Since the West Sea experiences a big difference in tides, the output power of the small marine hydroelectric power plant varies with the tide. When an induction generator is used here for small hydroelectric power, the reactive power capacitor should be installed at the generator main bus to compensate for the changes in power. As such, the sizing method for the power compensation of the induction generator is reviewed and an optimal method for compensation is suggested. The self-excitation minimum capacitor capacity method, which prevents high voltages, and the power factor automatic control method, which retains a power factor of greater than 90% are reviewed. The compensation effect of reactive power is confirmed through a case study.

  • In this paper, we deal with two drift compensation algorithms of acceleration sensor for measuring the galloping on power transmission line. Firstly, the block diagram of galloping measurement system is given and a galloping model is presented. Secondly, two compensation algorithms, a simple compensation and a period compensation, are proposed. A simple compensation algorithm uses the drifts of velocity and distance at fixed periods, so it is useful for constant drift case. Next, a period compensation algorithm can compensate a periodic drift. This algorithm uses the previous measured data and compensated data for constant period, where the period is obtained by FFT method. Lastly, the effectiveness of proposed algorithms is verified by comparing between two algorithms in simulation, and its characteristics and the drift error bound are shown, respectively.

Analysis and Compensation of PCC Voltage Variations caused by Wind Turbine Power Fluctuations

  • The voltage variation problem at the point of common coupling (PCC) in a grid-connected wind turbine is investigated. The voltage variation problem is one of the most frequent power quality issues for the grid connection of large amounts of input power in a weak grid. Through the simplified modeling of the wind turbine and power network, the magnitude of PCC voltage variation is calculated by using the equivalent circuit parameters and output power of the wind turbine. The required amount of reactive power that can compensate the voltage variation is also presented analytically by using the vector diagram method. The proposed calculation and compensation method of the PCC voltage variation is verified by computer simulations and experiments.

DC-Link Voltage Balance Control in Three-phase Four-wire Active Power Filters

  • The three-phase four-wire shunt active power filter (APF) is an effective method to solve the harmonic problem in three-phase four-wire power systems. In addition, it has two possible topologies, a four-leg inverter and a three-leg inverter with a split-capacitor. There are some studies investigating DC-link voltage control in three-phase four-wire APFs. However, when compared to the four-leg inverter topology, maintaining the balance between the DC-link upper and lower capacitor voltages becomes a unique problem in the three-leg inverter with a split-capacitor topology, and previous studies seldom pay attention to this fact. In this paper, the influence of the balance between the two DC-link voltages on the compensation performance, and the influence of the voltage balance controller on the compensation performance, are analyzed. To achieve the balance between the two DC-link capacitor voltages, and to avoid the adverse effect the voltage balance controller has on the APF compensation performance, a new DC-link voltage balance control strategy for the three-phase four-wire split-capacitor APF is proposed. Representative simulation and experimental results are presented to verify the analysis and the proposed DC-link voltage balance control strategy.

  • The active filter system for harmonic current compensation is presented in this paper. The active filter, composed of a three-phase voltage-type PWM inverter and the capacitor, compensates both the harmonic currents and the reactive power by injecting the PWM current to the ac line. This paper describes the principle of harmonic current compensation, the calculation circuits for the harmonic currents to be injected, the several compensation characteristics. Also the experimental results are shown to verify the theory proposed in this paper.

  • Improvement of power factor is achieved by reactive-current compensation, connecting power condenser to the circuit. This paper describes a method of reactive-current compensation, employing thyristor switching of capacitor banks without any breaker. This method reduces supply transients to the minimum by means of connecting condenser, because thyristor is triggered at zero point in condenser current. The reactive current detection and the experimental system to trigger thyristor at appropriate moment are given. IThe results show the fast reactive-current compensation on the condition of minimum transient.

친환경 Ultra-capacitor에 의한 순시전압강하의 직렬전압보상 시스템 (Series Voltage Compensation Systems for Voltage Sag by Using an Environmentally Friendly Ultra-capacitor)

  • A series voltage compensation(SVC) system is a power-electronics controller that can protect sensitive loads from disturbance in the supply system. Especially, voltage sags are considered the dominant disturbances affecting the power quality. This paper dealt with a system of off-line type voltage sag compensation by using a bi-directional DC/DC converter of environmentally friendly ultra-capacitor. This capacitor is attached to the DC link of SVC through the high-efficiency DC/DC converter in order to compensate the DC link voltage drop during short-term power interruption as voltage sags. Therefore, in this paper, a DC/DC converter to control high-efficiency energy of ultra-capacitor and voltage sag detection algorithm of off-line type SVC systems are newly introduced. According to the results of experimental of prototype system, it is verified that the proposed system has effectiveness of voltage sag compensation using an ultra-capacitor.

  • The objective of this paper is to compare the series and shunt approaches of controlled reactive power compensation to improve power system transient stabilities. Including main circuit considerations of series and shunt compensators, application aspects are thought to have major impacts on efficiency and economy of the installation of the compensators. The concept is studied by means of EMTP simulations on one machine-Infinite Bus Test System which consists of a 612MVA steam turbin generator and transformer and double circuit 345KV transmission line. Idealized dynamic models of Thyristor Controlled Series Compensation and Shunt Compensation are used for the comparative study of the series and shunt compensation approach to damp power system oscillations.

LCL Resonant Compensation of Movable ICPT Systems with a Multi-load

  • Compared to LC resonance, LCL resonance has distinct advantages such as a large resonant capability, low voltage and current stresses of the power device, constant voltage or current output characteristics, and fault-tolerance capability. Thus, LCL resonant compensation is employed for a movable Inductive Contactless Power Transfer (ICPT) system with a multi-load in this paper, which achieves constant current output characteristics. Peculiarly, the primary side adopts a much larger compensation inductor than the primary leakage inductor to lower the reactive power, reduce the input current ripple, generate a large current in the primary side, and realize soft-switching. Furthermore, this paper proposes an approximate resonant point for large inductor-ratio LCL resonant compensation through fundamental wave analysis. In addition, the PWM control strategy is used for this system to achieve constant current output characteristics. Finally, an experimental platform is built, whose secondary E-Type coils can ride and move on a primary rail. Simulations and experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of both the theory and the design method.
