An Energy Efficient Intelligent Method for Sensor Node Selection to Improve the Data Reliability in Internet of Things Networks

  • Internet of Things (IoT) connects several objects with embedded sensors and they are capable of exchanging information between devices to create a smart environment. IoT smart devices have limited resources, such as batteries, computing power, and bandwidth, but comprehensive sensing causes severe energy restrictions, lowering data quality. The main objective of the proposal is to build a hybrid protocol which provides high data quality and reduced energy consumption in IoT sensor network. The hybrid protocol gives a flexible and complete solution for sensor selection problem. It selects a subset of active sensor nodes in the network which will increase the data quality and optimize the energy consumption. Since the unused sensor nodes switch off during the sensing phase, the energy consumption is greatly reduced. The hybrid protocol uses Dijkstra's algorithm for determining the shortest path for sensing data and Ant colony inspired variable path selection algorithm for selecting active nodes in the network. The missing data due to inactive sensor nodes is reconstructed using enhanced belief propagation algorithm. The proposed hybrid method is evaluated using real sensor data and the demonstrated results show significant improvement in energy consumption, data utility and data reconstruction rate compared to other existing methods.

  • Korea has achieved a rapid economic development and with the increase in population and national income and the expansion of social and economic activities, energy consumption has rapidly increased too. Energy consumption per head has constantly increased and currently, power consumption per head is 7.5 times bigger than in 1985. Buildings occupy 25% of total energy consumption and especially, 50% of total energy is consumed for heating and cooling. In this situation, multi-family housing, which has constantly been increased, has an energy saving rate of 1.9%, which is the lowest level and this makes the government's energy policy for sustainable energy system development useless. Besides, energy consumption leads to secondary problems, such as air, water and marine pollution and heat pollution and wastewater/drainage and the increased use of fossil fuel is a fundamental reason for ozone layer destruction and global warming. Therefore, efficient energy consumption plans are required. This study aims to analyze energy performance in each block type of high-rise and diversified multi-family housing that accounts for 60% of all the housing forms, depending on the variations in stories through BIM-based energy simulation. For this study, four representative block types were selected, based on the multi-family floor plan, which is certified for energy performance evaluation and they were applied to the floor plan of a multi-family house that is scheduled to be built. Then BIM modeling was conducted from the fifth story to the 40th story at an intervals of 5 stories and based on the finding, energy characteristics of each block type and energy performance depending on the variations in stories were analyzed. It is considered that this would serve as objective data for block type and block story decision of energy performance-based multi-family housing.

  • 모바일 플랫폼에서 게임은 가장 전력을 많이 소모하여 배터리 사용시간을 단축시키는 응용 중 하나이다. 따라서 모바일 게임은 스마트폰의 배터리 사용시간을 늘리기 위한 중요한 전력관리 대상이다. 그러나 모바일 게임 실행 중에 배터리 용량이 급격히 감소하는 현상은 빈번하게 발생하는 문제이며 사용자가 많은 여러 모바일 게임의 동작을 검토해 본 결과 멀티 쓰레드로 동작하는 동안 특정 쓰레드가 불필요하게 CPU 사용량을 높게 점유하여 에너지가 낭비되는 경우가 발생하였다. 따라서 본 논문은 게임 실행 중 Quality of Service(QoS)와 무관하게 비정상적으로 CPU 사용량이 높은 쓰레드를 검출하고 이종 멀티프로세싱 (Heterogeneous Multi-Processing)의 특성을 활용하여 QoS 저하 없이 전력소모를 감소시키는 최적화 기법을 제안한다. 제안된 기법을 상용 스마트폰(삼성 Galaxy S6 Edge)에 적용하여 QoS 저하 없이 최대 58%의 에너지 효율 향상이 가능하였다.

에너지 관리 알고리즘을 이용한 저전력 움직임 추정기 구조 (Low Energy Motion Estimation Architecture using Energy Management Algorithm)

  • 모바일 기술과 개인 휴대통신 서비스가 발달함에 따라, 휴대용기기에서 멀티미디어 데이터의 연산량은 점점 증가하고 있다. 따라서 배터리로부터 에너지를 얻는 모바일 기기에서의 에너지 관리는 더욱더 중요해지고 있다. 비디오 인코딩에 필수적으로 사용되는 움직임 추정기는 매우 많은 연산량을 갖고 있어, 비디오 인코더에서 가장 많은 에너지를 소모하고 있다. 본 논문에서는 여러 가지 고속 탐색 알고리즘과 에너지 관리 알고리즘을 적용할 수 있는 저전력 움직임 추정기 구조를 제안한다. ECVH (Energy-constrained Vdd hopping)는 slack time과 주어진 에너지 여유분에 따라 수행신간에 사용하는 알고리즘과 동작 주파수, 공급 전압을 동적으로 바꾸어 에너지 소모를 줄이고 주어진 조건 내에서 성능을 최대화하는 알고리즘이다. 본 논문에서는 ECVH를 제안한 구조에 적용했을 때 움직임 추정기의 에너지 소모가 효과적으로 줄어드는 것을 시뮬레이션을 통해 보여주고 있다. 또한 ECVH 알고리즘을 수행하는 전원관리부와 움직임 추정기의 설계 결과를 보여주고 있다.

  • 최근 전력난으로 인해 각 분야에서 에너지 절감을 위한 기술에 대한 연구가 활발하게 진행됨에 따라 네트워크분야에서도 에너지 절감을 위한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 논문에서는 변화하는 트래픽 밀도에 따라 기지국의 전송파워를 조절하여 트래픽이 없거나 적은 경우 발생하는 불필요한 기지국의 에너지 소모를 줄임으로서 기지국의 소모 에너지를 절감하는 셀 주밍 기법을 제안하고, 트래픽의 변화에 따른 기지국의 서비스 시나리오를 비교하여 에너지 절감을 확인하였다.

유채혼합유를 사용하는 기관에서 초음파에너지의 영향 (Effect of Ultrasonic Energy in the Engine using Diesel Fuel Blended Rape-seed Oil)

  • The effect of ultrasonic energy for diesel fuel and blend oil has been revealed in this paper. The experimental setup consisted of a high speed diesel engine with 4 cylinder, dynamometer and ultrasonic fuel feeding system. Ultrasonic energy was added to diesel fuel and blend oil, which is a blend of diesel fuel and rape-seed oil. As engine speed was changed, engine torque and power, brake specific fuel consumption and thermal efficiency were measured in detail. As the results, by adding ultrasonic energy to diesel fuel and blend oil, the engine performance was improved in range of the experiment. The effect of improvement on brake specific fuel consumption and thermal efficiency for blend oil is higher than that for diesel fuel. When ultrasonic energy was added to diesel fuel or blend oil, a rise in engine torque for diesel fuel was higher than that for blend oil, but the effect of ultrasonic energy was small. From these results, it may be desirable to add ultrasonic energy to blend oil for the use of blend oil to diesel engine.

  • The device we have developed is the automatic shut off equipment which will reduce energy consumption when an equipment is in stand by power state. The principle for this system is when a man is moving, electricity will flow by setting a on-off light system. At night, in the stand-by power state the electric supply will be shut off immediately which will reduce energy consumption. Energy consumed by 24hour operating machines and stand-by electronic devices will be reduced by pulse signals which will give power supply when needed.

  • In wireless sensor networks where there is no centralized base station, each node has limited transmission range and the multi-hop routing for transmitting data to the destination is the one of the important technical issues. In particular, the wireless sensor network is not powered by external power source but operates by its own battery, so it is required to maximize the network life through efficient use of energy. To balance the power consumption, the residual power based adaptive power control is required in routing protocol. In this paper, we propose a routing protocol that prolongs the network lifetime by balancing the power consumption among the nodes by controlling the transmit power according to the residual power. We evaluate the proposed routing protocol using extensive simulation, and the results show that the proposed routing scheme can balance the power consumption and prolong network lifetime.

저전력 캐쉬를 위한 웨이-라인 예측 유닛을 이용한 새로운 드로시 캐싱 기법 (New Drowsy Cashing Method by Using Way-Line Prediction Unit for Low Power Cache)

  • The goal of this research is to reduce dynamic and static power consumption for a low power cache system. The proposed cache can achieve a low power consumption by using a drowsy and a way prediction mechanism. For reducing the static power, the drowsy technique is used at 4-way set associative cache. And for reducing the dynamic energy, one among four ways is selectively accessed on the basis of information in the Way-Line Prediction Unit (WLPU). This prediction mechanism does not introduce any additional delay though prediction misses are occurred. The WLPU can effectively reduce the performance overhead of the conventional drowsy caching by waking only a drowsy cache line and one way in advance. Our results show that the proposed cache can reduce the power consumption by about 40% compared with the 4-way drowsy cache.

  • Due to the building energy consumption of total energy consumption of Korea takes over 24%, economizing building energy and using renewable energy resources is being required. To suggest the prototype of zero energy house of country house, the passive systems and active systems are applicated and simulated. In case of wall insulation system is applicated, the heating load of building is reduced. Also, clear triple pair glazing system reduced 2.1% of heating load of building. The amount of reducing heating load by infiltration is depending on the Heating system. In this model, the 0.3ACH made 14.6% saving on heating load from base infiltration 0.82ACH. The solar thermal system of active system could save 80% of DHW and PV system supplies electric power more than average consumption of year. Through the optimum process, the end use of zero energy house of country house is 36kWh/m2.yr and total energy consumption is reduced about 74.2%.
