The dried needles (1.5 kg) of Picea abies Karsten were ground, extracted with acetone-$H_2O$ (7:3, v/v), concentrated, and fractionated with a series of n-hexane, methylene chloride, ethyl acetate and water on a separatory funnel. Each fraction was freeze dried, then a portion of ethyl acetate soluble powder was chromatographed on a Sephadex LH-20 column using a series of aqueous methanol and ethanol-n-hexane mixture as eluents. The isolated compounds were identified by cellulose TLC, $^1H$-, $^{13}C$-NMR, FAB and EI-MS. (+)-catechin (compound I), (-)-epicatechin (compound II), kaempferol-3-O-${\beta}$-D-glucopyranoside (compound III), 4-hydroxyacetophenone (compound IV) were isolated from the ethyl acetate soluble fraction and (+)-catechin (compound I), protocatechuic acid (compound V) were isolated from the $H_2O$ soluble fraction of P. abies needle. The antioxidative activities of each fraction and the isolated compounds were tested by DPPH radical scavenging method, and EtOAc soluble fraction, (+)-catechin and (-)-epicatechin showed similar values to ${\alpha}$-tocopherol and BHT as controls.
Rice bran commonly available in Bangladesh is a mixture of rice hulls (60%), bran (35%) and polishing (5%), referred here as rice mill feed (RMF). Dose response effect of RMF supplementation to a straw diet including a zero level was measured on the intake, digestibility, nitrogen balance, microbial N yield and growth rate of growing native (Bos indicus) bulls. Twelve bulls of 33 months old and $272{\pm}31.5kg$ weight were randomly allocated to diets having 0 (T1), 1 (T2) and 2 (T3) kg RMF in addition to 200 g wheat bran, 200 g molasses, 60 g salt and 30 g oyestershe\l powder. Concentrate intake was 5.5, 19.2 and 29.5% of the dietary intake for the T1, T2 and T3 treatment respectively. RMF supplementation had no significant effect on the straw DM intake. However, with the increasing levels of RMF supplementation, total DM & digestible OM intake and the whole gut digestibilities of DM, OM, N & ADF increased but in deminishig return. Total microbial N yield estimated from the urinary purine excretion were 15.35, 26.56 and 38.44 g/d for the treatment T1, T2 and T3 respectively. Both the N intake and the N balance increased linearly in response to increasing level of RMF. Supplementation of RMF linearly increased the energy intake and dietary energy concentration. Growth rate in the T1, T2 and T3 treatments were 112, 125 and 250 g/d respctively. The basal N excretion and the maintenance energy requirement of the experimental animals were estimated to be 615 mg/kg $W^{0.75}/d$ and 447 kJ/kg $W^{0.75}/d$ respectively. The estimated efficiency on N utilization was 0.83 mg/mg of N intake ($r^2=0.997$) while the efficiency of metabolizable energy utilization for growth was 0.15. Since animal refused higher levels of RMF, inclusion up to 2 kg level (about 25% of the total DM intake) appears to have no depressing effect on the performances of animal. However, RMF itself fail to meet the critical nutrient need of the rumen microbes. Therefore response of supplementing RMF after correcting the critical nutrient deficiency need to be studied.
This study was conducted to evaluate the tensile bond strength of three commercially available glass ionomer cements as orthodontic bracket adhesives. 120 premolars extracted for orthodontic treatment were prepared for bonding and standard edgewise brackets were bonded with Shofu Glaslonomer Cement (Shofu Co., U.S.A.), GC Fuji ItGC Co., Japan), KETAC-CEM(ESPE Co., West Germany) with different P/L ratio. The tensile bond strength was tested by Instron testing device after 24hours and 3months from bonding. After debracketing, bracket bases were examined to determine the failure sites. The results of this study were as follows: 1. KETAC CEM showed the highest bond strength other than measurement after 24 hours and at its original P/L ratio, and seemed to have clinically a proper bond strength. It seemed, however, that both Shofu Giaslonomer Cement and GC Fuji I had an inappropriate bond strength. 2. The incorporation of additional powder into the mixture improved the tensile bond strength. 3. Prolonged storage time improved the tensile bond strength. 4. Of the failure, failure occured at the tooth-adhesive interface(54.2%) was the most common type. The second type of failure(36.7%) was combination type, where part of the adhesive remained on the tooth and part on the bracket. And the last type of failure(9.1%) occured at the adhesive-bracket interface.
One of the greatest challenges for our society is providing powerful electrochemical energy conversion and storage devices. Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries and fuel cells are among the most promising candidates in terms of energy and power density. As the starting material, $TiCl_4{\cdot}YCl_3$ solution and dispersing agent (HCP) were mixed and synthesized using ammonia as the precipitation agent, in order to prepare the nano size Y doped spherical $TiO_2$ precursor. Then, the $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ was synthesized using solid state reaction method through the stoichiometric mixture of Y doped spherical $TiO_2$ precursor and LiOH. The Ti mole increased the concentration of the spherical particle size due to the addition of HPC with a similar particle size distribution in a well in which $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ spherical particles could be obtained. The optimal synthesis conditions and the molar ratio of the Ti 0.05 mol reaction at $50^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes and at $850^{\circ}C$ for 6 hours heat treatment time were optimized. $Li_4Ti_5O_{12}$ was prepared by the above conditions as a working electrode after generating the Coin cell; then, electrochemical properties were evaluated when the voltage range of 1.5V was flat, the initial capacity was 141 mAh/g, and cycle retention rate was 86%; also, redox reactions between 1.5 and 1.7V, which arose from the insertion and deintercalation of 0.005 mole of Y doping is not a case of doping because the C-rate characteristics were significantly better.
In order to clarify the lime-based building method used in the Joseon Dynasty, lime materials, production techniques, and mixing methods recorded in ancient literature were examined. In ancient Joseon Dynasty literature, the use of low grade limestone as a raw material was recorded, and the use of pozzolanic materials such as Hwangtoh, white clay, and roof tile powder as mixing aids to enhance the strength of lime was recorded. In addition, various lime hydration and mixing methods were recorded, and based on re-experiments carried out with regards to this, a physical property evaluation was deemed to be required in accordance with the various types of raw lime materials, lime hydration methods, and mixture ratios. In the early Joseon Dynasty, lime was used for various aspects, but frequent problems were experienced due to lack of supply and poor production techniques. In the late Joseon Dynasty, lime production techniques developed along with mass production. Based on analysis of the manufacturing techniques of Hoegwagmyo lime mortar in the 16th and 18th centuries during the Joseon Dynasty, it was found that mixing ratios and the methods described in the ancient literature had been applied. It was confirmed that the mixing ratio differed depending on mixing materials and lime quality. Since the mixing ratio of Hoegwagmyo lime mortar changed over time and it was produced strictly on the basis of a guidebook, it is believed that if continuous scientific analysis of the Hoegwagmyo lime mortar production method were carried out, this would be helpful for ascertaining the chronological methodology of Hoegwagmyo.

For recycling of waste foundry sands, researchers recently try to recycle them rather than depend on reclamation, and are studying on how to combine waste foundry sands with cement and use them for various kinds of construction material as the effective recycling method of waste foundry sand. In this research, The ways to find the proper replacement rate of waste foundry sands and to make use of them were suggested through the experiments on the range to apply waste foundry sands with two levels of 1:3 mixture rate of W/C 43% and 50%. The research result showed that in terms of liquidity as the characteristic of unhardened mortar, as the replacement rate of waste foundry sands increased, its flow tended to decrease. The amount of air also displayed a similar tendency to that of liquidity in that the higher the replacement rate of waste foundry sands became, the lower it became. With regard to the solidity trait of hardened mortar, it increased when the waste foundry sands were replaced more, and the replacement of waste foundry sands caused increased initial solidity. As for the amount of water permeated and that of water absorbed as the water tight proofing properties, the amount of permeated water was proved to decrease because of the gap recharge effect by the fine powder of waste foundry sands, and the replacement of waste foundry sands in the structures requiring watertightness is concluded to be very effective.
The curd yogurt (total solid content: 14%) was prepared from milk added with skim milk powder and potato puree. Potato puree comprised 9.5. 13,8 and 17.9% (dry basis) of the milk-potato mixture, and the effect of potato on the quality of yogurt was investigated. Addition of potato remarkably stimulated acid production and propagation of lactic acid bacteria, and viable cells reached above $3.9{\times}10^{10}$ CFU/ml after 12 hours. As potato content increased, the ratio of lactic acid content to total acidity decreased, while citric acid increased. The major organic acids of yogurt were lactic acid, citric acid, and acetic acid. Viscosity of yogurt was increased in proportion to the increment of the potato content. After 24 hours of incubation, the sensory score of yogurt containing 13.8% (dry basis) potato showed better sensory acceptability. When curd yogurt added with potato was kept at $5^{\circ}C$ for 15 day, its keeping quality was relatively good. Viable cells of lactic acid bacteria and ${\beta}-galactosidase$ activity decreased rapidly at pH 1.5, and 2.5, but the group added with potato was more stable than control.
In order to increase the surface area of electrodes for electrosorption, porous carbon electrodes were fabricated by a wet phase inversion method. A carbon slurry consisting of a mixture of activated carbon powder (ACP), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVdF), and N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as a solvent was cast directly on a graphite sheet. The cast film was then immersed in pure water for phase inversion. The physical and electrochemical properties of the electrodes were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), porosimetry, and cyclic voltammetry. The SEM images verified that the pores of various sizes were formed uniformly on the electrode surface. The average pore sizes determined for the electrodes fabricated with various NMP contents ranged from 64.2 to 82.4 nm and the size increased as the NMP content increased. All of the voltammograms showed a typical behavior of charging and discharging characteristic at the electric double layer. The electrical capacitance ranged from 3.88 to $5.87F/cm^2$ depending on the NMP contents, and the electrical capacitance increased as the solvent content decreased. The experimental results showed that the solvent content is an important variable controlling pore size and ultimately the capacitance of the electrode.
Curcuminoids are polyphenolic compounds and include curcumin and its derivatives possessing a yellow color. In the present study, changes in the chemical stability and antioxidant activities of curcuminoids, including curcumin, demethoxycurcumin (DMC), and bisdemethoxycurcumin (BMC), were investigated under various processing conditions. The yellowness of a mixture of the curcuminoids (79.4% curcumin, 16.8% DMC, and 3.8% BMC) at 405 nm was proportional to their amounts analyzed by HPLC. The curcuminoids became less stable with increases of pH and temperature during storage. Exposing a solution of the curcuminoids to autoclave conditions ($121^{\circ}C$, 1.2 atm for 15 min) decreased residual curcuminoid levels by 80-90%; however, as a powder under the same conditions the curcuminoids were much more stable with less than 10% loss. After autoclave treatment, scavenging activities of the curcuminoids for DPPH and ABTS radicals were reduced by 10.3 and 33.4%, respectively, whereas nitric oxide scavenging activity was slightly increased. The residual levels of curcumin, DMC, and BMC after autoclaving were 0.7, 1.4, and 0.9%, respectively, indicating that curcumin was the most sensitive to autoclave treatment. The results indicate that under processing conditions, pH and temperature markedly affect the stability of curcuminoids and major losses of curcuminoids occur after autoclaving. These conditions should be considered when processing foods containing curcuminoids.
In this study, fine structures of silica, titanium dioxide, talc and kaolin used in decorative cosmetics and the mixture extracted from BB cream cosmetics were observed by scanning electron microscopy. Kaolin had plate like shape structures of polygon with smooth surface and edge of kaolin had a relatively smooth appearance in comparison with talc. Also, thickness of each layer was estimated to about $0.1{\mu}M$ in the lump formed in stratum of several layers. Talc was observed by lumps shape phase of layering very thin flake. Boundary of thin flake was sharp or angular phase and thickness of flake was approximately 600 nm in diameter. When comparing the thickness of kaolin and talc, we was confirmed that kaolin was thicker than talc. Diameter of titanium dioxide was estimated to 0.2~0.3 ${\mu}M$ and surface of particle was a soft cubic form. Silica was confirmed that variety of size from 200 nm to $15{\mu}M$ of globular shape was measured. From the observation of inorganic pigments, silica was homogeneous dispersed in the BB cream cosmetics and among each other was filled with relatively small size like talc, kaolin, titanium dioxide and iron oxide. In conclusion, we suggest that silica at decorative cosmetics were formed in cosmetic coat at the skin as the minimum thickness.
