  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the quality characteristics of lotus leaf Dasik prepared by additions of lotus leaf powder at differing levels (0%, 3%, 6%, 9%, 12%). The proximate composition of the lotus leaf powder was 6.00% moisture, 19.56% crude protein, 0.78% crude fat, 64.7% carbohydrate, and 8.93% crude ash. As the lotus leaf powder level increased, the moisture content of the lotus leaf Dasik increased however, the L, a, and b values of the lotus leaf Dasik significantly decreased. According to the mechanical evaluation results, hardness increased as the level of lotus leaf powder increased, adhesiveness and springiness were not significantly different among the groups, and cohesiveness was evaluated as higher in the control group as compared to the lotus leaf groups. In the sensory evaluations, the 6% lotus leaf Dasik prepared with 188 g of flour, 12 g of lotus leaf powder, and 200 g of honey showed the highest preference scores and was therefore chosen as the optimal product.

  • In the field of makeup cosmetics, especially, powder-based foundations such as two-way cake, pact and face powder, the quality of which is known to be strongly influenced by the properties of powder, surface treatment technology is widely used as a method to improve the various characteristics of powder texture, wear properties, dispersion ability and so on. The two-way cake or pressed-powder foundation is one of the familiar makeup products in Asian market for deep covering and finishing purpose. In spite of the relent progress in surface modification method such as composition of powders with different characteristics and application of a diversity of coating ingredient (metal soap, amino acid, silicone and fluorine), this product possess a technical difficulty to enhance both of the adhesion power and spreadability on the skin in addition to potential claim of consumer about heavy or thick feeling. This article is covering the preparation and coating method of nano-vesicle that mimic the double-layered lipid lamellar structure existing between the corneocytes of the stratum corneum in the skin for the purpose of improving both of two important physical characteristic of two-way cake, spreadability and adhering force to skin, and obtining better affinity to skin. Nano-vesicle was prepared using the high-pressure emulsifying process of lecithin, pseudo ceramide, butylene glycol and tocopheryl acetate. This nano-sized emulsion was added to powder-dispersed aqueous phase together with bivalent metal salt solution and then the filtering and drying procedure was followed to yield the nano-vesicle coated powder. The amount of nano-vesicle coated on the powder was able to regulated by the concentration of metal salt and this novel powder showed the lower friction coefficient, more uniform condition of application and higher adhesive powder comparing with the alkyl silane treated powder from the test result of spreadability and wear properties using friction meter and air jet method. Two-wav cake containing newly developed coated powder with nano-vesicle showed the similar advantages in the frictional and adhesive characteristics.

  • In this work, pozzolanic activities of various waste materials were compared with those of well-known by-product pozzolanic materials. Undensified and densified silica fume, ASTM class F and class C fly ash, and metakaolin were chosen as well-known pozzolanic materials, and bentonite powder, ceramic powder obtained from wash basin, and waste glass wool, which can possibly possess pozzolanic property, were chosen for comparison. Drop in electrical conductivity at $40^{\circ}C$ saturated lime solution was measured for each materials. The amount of Ca(OH)2 decomposed from cement paste at $450{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ was also measured to evaluate pozzolanic activity. The 28 day compressive strength were used to observe the mechanical property enhanced by incorporation of various waste materials. According to the experimental results, using "difference between maximum conductivity value and conductivity value at 4 hour" was found to be a reasonable approach to determine pozzolanic activity of a material. Pozzolanic activity measured using electrical conductivity correlates very well with that measured using the amount of Ca(OH)2 remained in the cement paste. Relatively good agreement was also found with electrical conductivity and 28 day compressive strength. It was found that electrical conductivity measurement can be used to evaluate pozzolanic activity of unknown materials.

  • The aim of the research is to analyze a feasibility of rapid evaluation method for cement fineness by the relation analysis between density measurement using hydrometer and fineness of ordinary Portland cement. Additionally, based on the commercially available cement product, relation between a series of fundamental properties of cement mortar and fineness of cement powder was analyzed. As an experimental result, the actually measured fineness value of cement powder showed a good correlation with the fineness value obtained by hydrometer while there was poor correlation with the fineness value on specification. Especially, the density measurement in three minutes showed the closest relation with cement powder fineness, thus rapid quality evaluation of cement powder can be possible by using the regression equation obtained from the three minutes density measurement. Additionally, there was a high relation between cement powder fineness with a fundamental properties of the cement mortar such as fluidity, air content, setting time, and strength development.

In Korea the shortage of food will be inevitable by the rapidly growing population. It will be very important study to develop a new food from the seaweeds which were not used hitherto for human consumption. B. The several kinds of seaweeds have been used by man in Korea mainly as side-dishes. However, a properly powdered seaweed will enable itself to be a good supplement or mixture to certain cereal flours. C. By adding the powdered seaweed to any cereals which have long been staple foods in this country the two fold benefits; saving of cereals and change of dietary pattern, will be secured. III. Objects and scope of the study A. Objects of the study The objects will come under four items. 1. To develop a powdered seaweed as a new food from the seaweeds which have been not used for human consumption. 2. To evaluate the nutritional quality of the products the analysis for chemical composition and animal feeding experiment will be conducted. 3. Experimental cocking and accepability test will be conducted for the powdered products to evaluate the value as food stuff. 4. Sanitary test and also economical analysis will be conducted for the powdered products. B. Scope of the study 1. Production of seaweed powders Sargassum fulvellum growing in eastern coast and Sargassum patens C.A. in southern coast were used as the material for the powders. These algae, which have been not used for human consumption, were pulverized through the processes of washing, drying, pulverization, etc. 2. Nutritional experiments a. Chemical composition Proximate components (water, protein, fat, cellulose, sugar, ash, salt), minerals (calcium, phosphorus, iron, iodine), vitamins (A, $B_1,\;B_2$ niacin, C) and amino acids were analyzed for the seaweed powders. b. Animal feeding experiment Weaning 160 rats (80 male and 80 female rats) were used as experimental animals, dividing them into 16 groups, 10 rats each group. Each group was fed for 12 weeks on cereal diet (Wheat flour, rice powder, barley powder, potato powder, corn flour) with the supplementary levels of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 30% of the seaweed powder. After the feeding the growth, feed efficiency ratio, protain efficiency ratio and ,organs weights were checked and urine analysis, feces analysis and serum analysis were also conducted. 3. Experimental cooking and acceptability test a. Several basic studies were conducted to find the characteristics of the seaweed powder. b. 17 kinds of Korean dishes and 9 kinds of foreign dishes were prepared with cereal flours (wheat, rice, barley, potato, corn) with the supplementary levels of 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% and 30% of the seaweed powder. c. Acceptability test for the dishes was conducted according to plank's Form. 4. Sanitary test The heavy metals (Cd, Pb, As, Hg) in the seaweed powders were determined. 5. Economical analysis The retail price of the seaweed powder was compared with those of other cereals in the market. And also economical analysis was made from the nutritional point of view, calculating the body weight gained in grams per unit price of each feeding diet. IV. Results of the study and the suggestion for application A. Chemical composition 1. There is no any big difference in proximate components between powders of Sargassum fulvellum in eastern coast and Sargassum patens C.A. in southern coast. Seasonal difference is also not significant. Higher levels of protein, cellulose, ash and salt were found in the powders compared with common cereal foods. 2. The levels of calcium (Ca) and iron (Fe) in the powders were significantly higher than common cereal foods and also rich in iodine (I). Existence of vitamin A and vitamin C in the Powders is different point from cereal foods. Vitamin $B_1\;and\;B_2$ are also relatively rich in the powders.'Vitamin A in ·Sargassum fulvellum is high and the levels of some minerals and vitamins are seemed4 to be some influenced by seasons. 3. In the amino acid composition methionine, isoleucine, Iysine and valine are limiting amino acids. The protein qualities of Sargassum fulvellum and Sargassum patens C.A. are seemed to be .almost same and generally ·good. Seasonal difference in amino acid composition was found. B. Animal feeding experiment 1. The best growth was found at.10% supplemental level of the seaweed Powder and lower growth rate was shown at 30% level. 2. It was shown that 15% supplemental level of the Seaweed powder seems to fulfil, to some extent the mineral requirement of the animals. 3. No any changes were found in organs development except that, in kidney, there found decreasing in weight by increasing the supplemental level of the seaweed powder. 4. There is no any significant changes in nitrogen retention, serum cholesterol, serum calcium and urinary calcium in each supplemental level of the seaweed powder. 5. In animal feeding experiment it was concluded that $5%{\sim}15%$ levels supplementation of the seaweed powder are possible. C. Experimental cooking and acceptability test 1. The seaweed powder showed to be utilized more excellently in foreign cookings than in Korean cookings. Higher supplemental level of seaweed was passible in foreign cookings. 2. Hae-Jo-Kang and Jeon-Byung were more excellent than Song-Pyun, wheat cake, Soo-Je-Bee and wheat noodle. Hae-Je-Kang was excellent in its quality even as high as 5% supplemental level. 3. The higher levels of supplementation were used the more sticky cooking products were obtained. Song-Pyun and wheat cake were palatable and lustrous in 2% supplementation level. 4. In drop cookie the higher levels of supplementation, the more crisp product was obtained, compared with other cookies. 5. Corn cake, thin rice gruel, rice gruel and potato Jeon-Byung were more excellent in their quality than potato Man-Doo and potato noodle. Corn cake, thin rice gruel and rice gruel were excellent even as high as 5% supplementation level. 6. In several cooking Porducts some seaweed-oder was perceived in case of 3% or more levels of supplementation. This may be much diminished by the use of proper condiments. D. Sanitary test It seems that there is no any heavy metals (Cd, Pb, As, Hg) problem in these seaweed Powders in case these Powders are used as supplements to any cereal flours E. Economical analysis The price of the seaweed powder is lower than those of other cereals and that may be more lowered when mass production of the seaweed powder is made in future. The supplement of the seaweed powder to any cereals is also economical with the criterion of animal growth rate. F. It is recommended that these seaweed powders should be developed and used as supplement to any cereal flours or used as other food material. By doing so, both saving of cereals and improvement of individual's nutrition will greatly be achieved. It is also recommended that the feeding experiment for men would be conducted in future.

  • This study was designed to investigate the feasibility of utilizing concentrates of sunmul(soybean curd whey), the waste by-product of soybean curd processing, as functional food ingredients. Sunmul was concentrated by nanofiltration fo11owing ultrafiltration and then freeze-dried. The oil adsorption capacity of the nanofiltraion(NF) powder(97.33g/100g) was similar to that of sunmul powder(94.17g/100g), but was lower than that of ISP(isolated soy protein). However, the water holding capacity of NF powder could not be determined because the NF powder completely dissolved in water. The protein solubilities of sunmul powder and ISP in distilled H$_{2}$O, 0.1M and 0.5M NaCl were lowest at pH 4.0 and increased at more acidic or alkaline conditions. However, the protein solubility of NF powder was at its minimum at pH 6.0 and increased at more acidic or alkaline conditions. Emulsifying activity indexes of NF powder in 4% and 6% solution were minimal at pH 4.0 and 6.0, respectively, which were 3 to 8 times lower than that of sunmul powder. The emulsion stability of 4% sunmul solution was lowest at pH 4.0, but that of NF powder was highest at pH 5.0 and decreased at more acidic or alkaline conditions at all concentrations of solution. The total free amino acid contents of protein in sunmul, and NF power were 99.07 and 2,110.10mg%, respectively, and NF powder exhibited especially high threonine content. Rapid viscosity analysis of dough with 1 to 5% added NF powder demonstrated that all of the peak and final viscosities decreased with increasing NF powder concentration compared to the control.

  • When iodine container for dental mouth treatment is opened, thread for treatment is cut by the blade in cap of container. Due to the problem of corrosion in a short period time after the reaction of metal blade to iodine solution, it gives impact on patient hygiene. In order to solve the problem, alternative products such as ceramic blade are developed and produced recently. In case of ceramic blade, it is produced by handwork and machine work. In this study, for the quantity production of ceramic blade with powder injection molding, we proposed a delivery system to have uniform charge of 20 cavity. Using Moldflow, simulation on 20 Cavity flow was performed. And then the mold was obtained through mold production and modification.(based on simulation) After injection molding, debinder, sintering process was achieved for ceramic blade, and the cap product was completed via insert injection on ceramic blade. In this study, we verified possibility of quantity production of ceramic blade which showed effective performance for cutting.

  • Background: The flowering plant Hippophae rhamnoides L. has been used for many studies on fruit or leaf extracts. This study was conducted to investigate the development of a new cosmetic material from H. rhamnoides fruits and leaves that have by antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and wrinkle improvement activities. Methods and Results: The antioxidant abilities of H. rhamnoides extracts, including of a water-soluble fruit powder (FW), a fatsoluble fruit powder (FF), a supercritical extract of fruit by-product (BS), and a mixture of leaf and fruit (MIX), were investigated in vitro. A DPPH radical assay for antioxidant activity was performed for these fractions alongside assay to evaluate the total phenolic and flavonoid content (TPC and TFC). As expected, the MIX had the highest DPPH radical scavenging activity ($RC_{50}=10.27{\mu}g/m{\ell}$), and the TPC and TFC also were highest in MIX ($225.7mg{\cdot}GAE/g$, and $25.18mg{\cdot}QE/g$, respectively). Nitric oxide (NO) production in LPS-induced RAW264.7 cells was estimated and the results indicated an over 75% decrease of NO production in FF and MIX. In other assays, the highest elastase inhibitory activity was found in FW. Conclusions: These results revealed that H. rhamnoides extracts have a high potential for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antiwrinkle activities. H. rhamnoides products are suggested to be applied as the functional materials of cosmetic ingredients.

  • Cooked mature silkworms have received increasing attention as a new source of income for sericultural farms. Quality improvement of these worms as the end-product requires prevention of the following: inclusion of unfertilized silkworm eggs, mixing with impurities, producing undercooked or overcooked mature larvae, and mixing spewed silk substance. Preventing unfertilized eggs and impurities and reducing undercooked or overcooked mature larvae can be achieved by sericultural farms. However, the prevention of spewed silk substance requires the development of new techniques. This study developed new techniques for optimum cold storage temperature, soaking, and hydro-thermal treatment to minimize the spewing of mature larvae prior to steaming: when larvae mature after 7 days on the $5^{th}$ instar, they should be soaked in water at room temperature of $25^{\circ}C$ immediately upon collection and stored at $8^{\circ}C$ for less than 3 days. They should be soaked in boiling water for approximately 10 s immediately before steaming to kill the larvae and cooked with steam. This method allows for the production of high-quality mature larvae without spewed silk substance. These new techniques will considerably improve the production of well-cooked quality mature larvae by minimizing silk substance spewed out from the larvae.

  • Ultrafine $Mg(OH)l_2$and MgO powders were recovered from the waste solution containing $Mg^{++}$ which was a by-product of SHS (Self-propagating High temperature Synthesis)process. The optimum experimental conditions to prepare $Mg(OH)_2$were 13.0 of pH and 0.7M of $Mg^{++}$ content with addition of 9M of KOH as a pH regulator in acid leaching solution. Complete pre-cipitation of Mg(OH)$_2$from $Mg^{++}$ was realized at that condition. The dehydration reaction of the prepared Mg(OH)$_2$was studied by DSC, and the result was used for calcination process. In order to obtain MgO powder, dried Mg(OH)2 powder was calcined at $400~450^{\circ}C$. Particle size and shape of the prepared $Mg(OH)_2$and MgO powder was similar to those of the commercial powders.
