민간환경보전운동단체의 장.단기 목표 및 추진방안 (The Goals and the Short and Long Term Plan for Non-Government Environmental Protection Organigations)

  • In this study, the goals and the short and long term plan to attain the goals were set up through the analysis of non-government environmental protection organizations actual conditions which were grasped through interview and questionnaire. The goals and the plan were modified and elaborated through 3 times environment experts conferences and a public hearing. The goals were as follows: a) Laying down the guidelines on the organizations. b) Establishing a view of environment. c) Paying a public attention to importance of environment. d) Activations the practice in environmental protection movement. e) Harmonizing the relations between the organizations themselves. government and the organizations, industries and the organizations. f) Establishing the government support system to the organizations in leagal. administrative and financial aspects. g) Enhancing the potentialities on research and development in environmental protection technology. In the short and long term plan, the specific activities to be driven up to the year 2000 were presented by stages.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore an inquisitive and innovative approach to structure and form, Calatrava's morphogenetic mechanism and to trace the ideas behind his working methods and his theoretical preoccupations. The bridges and buildings of S. Calatrava possess a breathtaking rhythm and of them some are designed to expand and contract like living organisms. The analogy Calatrava has used as a creative tool to mutate human bodies into arcing roof forms and bridge suspensions is introduced to illustrate the morphogenetic process. At the same time, the analysis used developing how to design frame structures foldable with brilliant mathematical solution is also investigated. Consequently, the potentialities of Calatrava's morphogenetic mechanism to invent new systems are generated by methodological hypothesis; analysis and analogy.

  • This paper presents the system design and implementation of 'Mon-e', the KT's edutainment robot for young children. We paid our special attention to the computer- illiterate young children, and the provision of the physical and friendly human interface of robots. Specifically, the paper focuses on the video telephony and home monitoring service using the Mon-e robot. RFID cards -based calling makes it possible for the computer-illiterate children to make a phone call to their parents. The SIP and DTMF based remote control of the robot enables the search and track of the children. This experimental development shows the potentialities and values of the convergence service of telecommunication and robotics.

Comprehensive Tideland Reclamation in Korea and Transferbility of Its Development Strategies and Techniques to Developing Countries

  • In 1980 the Ministrv of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheies(MAFF) established the Long-term Tideland Development Scheme in the South-west Seashore Region. Since that time Korea has been developing comprehensive and innovative development frmaeworks in reclamation works and levelling up the potentialities of the donating country of internatioal cooperation in that field. And also, Korea has the well-organized governmental institutions for international cooperation in the development of tideland reclamation technologies such as RDC(Rural Development Corporation) for the field of agricultural engineering and RDA(Rural Development Administration) for the field of agricultural development. In Conclusion, it is ascertained that Korea has a good potentiality of aiding developing countries in the development of tideland reclamation, especially in agricultural development.

연질밀(Triticum aestivum L. em Thell.)의 이화학적 특성과 sugar-snap cookie의 제조적성 (Physicochemical Properties and Sugar-Snap Cookie Making Potentialities of Soft Wheat Cultivars and Lines (Triticum aestivum L. em Thell.))

  • 연질밀(Triticum aestivum L. em Thell.)로서 soft white spring(SWS) 밀과 soft white winter(SWW) 각각 10품종(또는 계통)을 공시재료로하여 종실의 이화학적 품질특성, 제분특 성, 호화특성, mixograph특성 및 sugar-snap cookie의 제조특성을 측정하고 이들 특성간의 상관관계를 구명하고자 일연의 실험을 실시한 바 그 결과를 보고한다. Single Kernel Characterization System(SKCS) kernel hard-ness와 용적중, near-infrared reflectance(NIR) hardness와는 각각 $r=0.947^{*},\;r=0.495^{*}$의 정의 상관이 있었으며 SKCS weight와 SKCS size와는 $r=0.942^{**}$의 고도의 정의 상관이 있었다. 용적중과 straight-grade flour yield, break flour yield, 밀가루 회분 함량 및 제분평점과는 각각 $r=0.720^{**},\;r=0.490^{*},\;r=-0.781^{**}$$r=0.838^{**}$ 의 고도의 정 또는 부의 상관이 있었다. 종실의 단백질 함량과 straight-grade flour yield, break flour yield 밀가루 회분 함량 및 제분평점은 각 각 $r=-0.786^{**},\;r=-0.765^{**},\;r=-0.889^{**}$$r=-0.938^{**}$로 서 고도의 정 또는 부의 상관이 있었으며 이와 같은 현상은 밀가루 단백질 함량에서 동일한 결과를 보였다. Mixograph 흡수을과 제분특성과는 고도의 정 또는 부의 상관이 있었으며, 특히 종실의 단백질 함량과는 $r=0.938^{**}$, 밀가루의 단백질 함량과는 $r=0.901^{**}$의 고도의 정의 상관이 있었다. Cookie 직경과 cookie top grain score는 $r=0.946^{**}$의 고도의 정의 상관이 있었다. Cookie특성과 제분특성, 단백질 함량 및 mixograph 흡수율과는 고도의 정 또는 부의 상관이 있었으나 전분특성과는 단지 swelling volume과 cookie top grain score 만이 $r=0.447^{*}$의 정의 상관이 있었다.

Occurrence of Root Rot and Vascular Wilt Diseases in Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) in Upper Egypt

  • Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) family Malvaceae is an important crop used in food, cosmetics and pharmaceutics industries. Roselle is cultivated mainly in Upper Egypt (Qena and Aswan governorates) producing 94% of total production. Root rot disease of roselle is one of the most important diseases that attack both seedlings and adult plants causing serious losses in crop productivity and quality. The main objective of the present study is to identify and characterize pathogens associated with root rot and wilt symptoms of roselle in Qena, Upper Egypt and evaluate their pathogenicity under greenhouse and field condition. Fusarium oxysporum, Macrophomina phaseolina, Fusarium solani, Fusarium equiseti and Fusarium semitectum were isolated from the natural root rot diseases in roselle. All isolated fungi were morphologically characterized and varied in their pathogenic potentialities. They could attack roselle plants causing damping-off and root rot/wilt diseases in different pathogenicity tests. The highest pathogenicity was caused by F. oxysporum and M. phaseolina followed by F. solani. The least pathogenic fungi were F. equiseti followed by F. semitectum. It obviously noted that Baladi roselle cultivar was more susceptible to infection with all tested fungi than Sobhia 17 under greenhouse and field conditions. This is the first report of fungal pathogens causing root rot and vascular wilt in roselle in Upper Egypt.

Comparison of Different Numerical Models of RC Elements for Predicting the Seismic Performance of Structures

  • This paper aims to provide guidelines for the numerical modeling of reinforced concrete (RC) frame elements in order to assess the seismic performance of structures. Several types of numerical models RC frame elements are available in nonlinear structural analysis packages. Since these numerical models are formulated based on different assumption and theories, the models accuracy, computing time, and applicability vary, which poses a great difficulty to practicing engineering and limits their confidence in the analysis resultants. In this study, the applicability of four representative numerical models of RC frame elements is evaluated through comparison with experimental results of four-storey bare frame available from European Laboratory for Structural Assessment. The accuracy of a numerical model is evaluated according to the top displacement, interstorey drift, Maximum storey shear, damage pattern and energy dissipation capacity of the frame structure. The results obtained allow a better understanding of the characteristics and potentialities of all procedures, helping the user to choose the best approach to perform nonlinear analysis.

Removal of Methylene Blue by Modified Carbon Prepared from the Sambucus Nigra L. plant

  • An increase in population initiating rapid industrialization was found to consequently increase the effluents and domestic wastewater into the aquatic ecosystem. In this research the potentialities of Sambucus nigra L. (SNL) plant in the remediation of water, contaminated with methylene blue (MB), a basic dye were investigated. SNL was chemically impregnated with $KHCO_3$. Operating variables studied were pH, amount of adsorbent and contact time. In general, pH did not have any significant effect on colour removal and the highest adsorption capacity was obtained in 0.035 g MB/g-activated carbon. The Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption models were applied to describe the equilibrium isotherms. The adsorption isotherm data were fitted to the Temkin isotherm. The mass transfer property of the sorption process was studied using Lagergren pseudo-first-order and chemisorption pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The sorption process obeyed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The surface area, pores volume and diameter were assessed by the Brunauer-Emmett-Teller and Barrett-Joyner-Halenda methods. The results were compared to those from activated carbon (Merck) and an actual sample. The results indicate that SNL can be employed as a natural and eco-friendly adsorbent material for the removal of dye MB from aqueous solutions.

  • The main cause of natural disaster in Korea is meteorological phenomenon, such as typhoon, heavy rain, storm, rainstorm, heavy snow, hailstorm, overflowing of sea and so on(including thunderstroke, blast, snow damage, freezing and earthquake), and among those disasters, heavy rain takes place most often, and it occupies 80% of total disaster Especially, disaster related to slope collapse (landslide, collapse of retaining wall, burying ect.) takes place every year due to meteorological cause such as localized heavy rain, which is getting stronger. (National Institute for Prevention Disaster, 2002, Meteorological Administration) Accordingly, it is necessary to analyze the features of slope collapse related to natural disaster in Korea, and also to make up counterplan to prevent disaster. This paper will try to analyze potential areas which are susceptible to landslide regarding factors inducing landslide and heavy rain, and to evaluate the potentiality of landslide regarding local particularity of rainfall, furthermore to provide essential information for development of community such as preventing damages from landslide, construction Industry, and effective use of land.

에너지원으로서의 가스 하이드레이트 개발 전망 (The Development Prospect for Gas Hydrate as an Energy Source)

  • Considering the fact that more than $97\%$ of fossil energy resources such as oil and natural gas needed in Korea rely on import, primary concern of the national economy is to secure future energy sources. Gas hydrates. which is non-conventional types of natural gas, distribute worldwide, especially in marine and permafrost Gas hydrates draw great attention recently as a new clean energy resources substituting conventional oil gas due to its presumed huge amount of volume reaching 10 trillion tons of gas and environmentally friendly characteristics. Results of preliminary survey by Korea Gas Corporation (KOGAS) and Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) showed that gas hydrates can be present in deep sea over 1,000m water depth in the East Sea. Gas hydrates can contribute to the rapidly increasing consumption of natural gas in Korea and achieve the self-support target by 2010 with $30\%$ of total natural gas demand. This study presents the potentialities and development prospects of gas hydrate as a future energy source.
