  • A pot experiment was conducted to learn the effect of non-compounded and compounded (with super phosphate) liquid fertilizers made of amino acid fermentation by product and the time of their application on the emergences and yield of orchard grass. Results obtained as follows; 1. The Application of the liquid fertilizers, on seeding day of the orchard grass raised soil pH and salt concentration more than the application on the days before seeding and decreased the number of sprouts of the grass which also lead to a lower yield of the grass compared with the latter. 2. Liquid compound fertilizer, however, tended to reduce the harmful effect on sprouting orchard grass compared with non-compounded liquid fetilizer, particulary in soil of on-lime applied. 3. The application of liquid and liquid compound fetilizers on somewhat acidic bare land a quite ahead of seeding or transplanting crops may not only reduce the effect of the fertilizers, provided the land is free from washing by rain or irrigation water, but also provide better conditions for sprouting and early growth of plant seedings than the use at the pre-seeding or pro-transplanting time.

  • To compare various methods for available soil P test, in terms of correlation between crop yield and amounts of available soil P, a pot experiment was conducted with soybean as test plant using four upland soils differing in phosphorus status. The results are summarized as following. 1. There was highly significant correlation between grain yield and amount of P uptake observed at the floral differentiation stage. Highly significant correlations were also observed between grain yield and available soil P of different methods, and between the amount of P uptake and available soil P. The consistency of correlations between soil P and plant parameters was Olsen${\geq}$Lancaster P>Bray No.1 P${\geq}$Bray No.2 P>Truog P. 2. The magnitute of available soil P values of different methods was in the order of Bray No.2>Lancaster P${\geq}$Bray No.1 P>Olsen P>Truog P. 3. The amounts of available P measured by various methods showed significant correlation with the amounts of Al-P, Fe-P and Ca-P. 4. As conclusion, Olsen-P, Lancaster-P, and Bray-P are reliable information for evaluating soil P status. However, Olesen-P seemed to be better than the others.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the efficiency of various inorganic and organic materials to improve physical properties of soil. Saline sodic soil (saturation percentage = 40.36%, $EC_e=5.15dS\;m^{-1}$, $pH_s=8.70$, $SAR=18.84(m\;mol\;L^{-1})^{1/2}$, bulk density =$1.49Mg\;m^{-3}$) was collected, brought to wire house and filled in pots after laboratory analysis for various parameters. Different sources of organic nutrients like farm manure (FM), press mud, compost, poultry manure and sesbania green manure were analyzed for their chemical composition. The experiment comprised of 12 treatments replicated thrice; $T_1$: control (recommended NPK), $T_2:{\frac{1}{2}}$ recommended NPK, $T_3$: FM at 1.5% by soil weight, $T_4$: pressmud at 1.5% by soil weight, $T_5$: compost at 1.5% by soil weight, $T_6$: poultry manure at 1.5% by soil weight, $T_7$: sesbania green manure at 1.5% by soil weight, $T_8:T_2$ + FM at 0.75% by soil weight, $T_9:T_2$ + pressmud at 0.75% by soil weight, $T_{10}:T_2$ + compost at 0.75% by soil weight, $T_{11}:T_2$ + poultry manure at 0.75% by soil weight, $T_{12}:T_2$ + sesbania green manure at 0.75% by soil weight. These treatments were applied using completely randomized (CR) design and appropriate time was given to decompose these organic nutritional sources. Seeds of wheat cultivar Sahar-2006 were sown. After harvesting the wheat, soil samples were collected from each pot and analyzed for various physical properties like bulk density, porosity and saturation percentage. An improvement in physical properties (bulk density, porosity and saturation percentage) of soil was noticed with the application of various organic nutritional sources but role of compost alone ($T_5$) remained prominent.

  • Bacterial fruit blotch (BFB) is one of most important diseases in Cucurbitaceae due to infection of Acidovorax citrulli, causing huge economic losses damage worldwide. This seedborn disease spread rapidly at period of high temperature and humidity. The eco-friendly farming is getting popular. So far there was no effective agent to control BFB in eco-friendly farming. Therefore, effect of the material based on chinese nut-gall extract with antibacterial activity against BFB to was tested against A. citrulli. Different hosts showed various symptoms of BFB. Liquid formulation among exhibited most effective anti-bacterial activity on A. citrulli. Pot experiment in greenhouse showed the potential as an control agent of BFB in cucurbits. The treatment of material based on chinese nut-gall extract showed the positive effect on survival of the watermelon seedling and on the length of the cucumber seedling treated with A. citrulli. We cautiously conclude that the material based on chinese nut-gall extract used in this study may be good agents against major diseases of cucurbits in the future even though it is require to be tested with more study on field test.

  • In order to study the effect of exsisting soil nutritional elements on the nitrogen uptake of sunflower, sorghum and black gram, pot experiment was carried out by using soils sampled from three different depths(0~20, 45~65, 90~110cm) of Brigalow soil in Australia. The results obtained were as follows : Dry matter and nitrogen uptake of corps were increased in the soil with higher nitrogen content. Chlorine uptakes of sunflower and sorghum were increased in the soil with higher nitrogen and lower chlorine contents, but that of black gram was done in the soil with higher contents of both elements. Ratios of nitrogen derived from applied fertilizer of three corps and fixed nitrogen of black gram were relatively low in the soil with higher content of soil nitrogen, but those derived from soil nitrogen were reverse. Recovery rates of applied nitrogen were relatively increased with higher cation uptakes of crops. Chlorine uptakes of sunflower and sorghum were positively correlated with each recovery of nitrogen, but that of black gram didn't show the trend. Recovery rate of applied nitrogen for black gram had significantly negative correlation with increase of soil chloride content.

  • Green manure cultivation affects soil productivity and nutrient conservation in paddy soil at winter season. This study was to evaluate nitrogen behavior released from chinese milk vetch (CMV) as green manure by using stable $^{15}N$ trace during rice cultivation. The CMV used in the experiment was 29.9 of C/N ratio and 14.1 g N $kg^{-1}$ ($^{15}N$ 0.388 atom % excess) and was applied at rates of 10 and $30Mg\;ha^{-1}$ in pot of 1/2000a size. Rice growth and N uptake increased with higher levels of CMV application at harvesting stage. Among total N uptake, 14.6 and 26.8 % of nitrogen was released respectively from the two different rates of CMV application. Stable $^{15}N$ recovery by rice biomass was 60%, 54% to the $^{15}N$ input, respectively, of CMV application, which decreased in order of grain, root, and straw of rice biomass. Total N content in the soil after rice harvest was 1.9 and 2.1 g N $kg^{-1}$, respectively, with increasing N input by the different rates of CMV application and the rate of $^{15}N$ recovery derived from CMV in the soil was 3.8 and 4.8 %, respectively. N input by CMV application induced rice growth and productivity during rice cultivation. However, it might need proper managements to reduce N loss because about 36-41 % of nitrogen was lost from N input by CMV application.

  • An auxin-producing bacteria (2SJ8-02) was isolated from waste mushroom bed of Agaricus bisporus in Buyeo-Gun, Chungnam. The strain 2SJ8-02 was classified as a novel strain of Pantoea rwandensis based on a chemotaxanomic and phylogeneticanalyses. The isolate was confirmed to produce indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), one of auxin hormones, by TLC and HPLC analyses. The maximum concentration of IAA, $122mg\;L^{-1}$ was detected from the culture in R2A broth containing 0.1% tryptophan for 24 h at $35^{\circ}C$. The molecular weight of the main peak obtained by LC-mass analysis was 175 corresponding to that of IAA. To investigate the growth-promoting effects to the crops, the culture broth of Pantoea rwandensis 2SJ8-02 was infected to water cultures and seed pots of mung bean. In consequence, the adventitious root induction and root growth of mung bean were two times higher than those of the control.

  • To get some informations for sustainable paddy use, the productivities of soils with two years of cropping systems were estimated through pot experiment using two pretreated groups of not autoclaved 'natural'- and 'autoclaved'-soils without any fertilization. And then the relationship between the productivities, called yield potentials, and the characteristics of soils as affected by cropping systems, such as rice-rice (R-R), ricebarley-rice-barley (R-B-R-B), rice-barley-rice-wheat (R-B-R-W), soybean-barley-soybean-barley (S-B-S-B), of which barley and wheat were composted at a level of $10MT\;ha^{-1}$, and S-B-S-B without compost, was analyzed. These treatments were established in mid-mountainous loam paddy, which contained exchangeable Ca of $11.8cmol_c\;kg^{-1}$, located at the altitude of 285 m above sea level in Sangju of Korea. Crops for the estimation of soil productivity were rice cv. 'Seolemi' and soybean cv. 'Chamol'. As a result, under the natural soils condition, rice grain and straw were highly produced in composted S-B-S-B soils (p < 0.05) and lowly in R-R soils (p < 0.05). While soybean grain and stem were higher in R-R soils (p < 0.05) than other soils which not significantly different each other. In case of autoclaved soils, the yield potentials of rice and soybean were high together in either composted R-B-R-B/W or S-B-S-B soils compared to R-R and uncomposted S-B-S-B soils (p < 0.05). In especial, these yield potentials under the natural soils condition were commonly influenced by soil porosity showing negative correlation for rice (p < 0.01); positive for soybean (p < 0.05). And the porosity possibly reversed even the symbiotic contribution of indigenous Bradyrhizobium japonicum for soybean. Under autoclaved soils condition the potentials of rice and soybean showed negative correlations with soil C:N ratio (p < 0.05) similarly to the case of rice in the natural soils.

  • This study was conducted to examine the mesh selecivity and optimum mesh size of spring frame trap for conger eel. Conger myriaster. It was carried out on 25th Sep. 2002 at the coastal sea of Nung-po, Geojedo. The experimental fishing gear was used in five kinds of different mesh size spring frame trap that were 15mm, 20mm, 25mm, 30mm and 35mm, and one plastic pot as control fishing gear that was 6.7mm hole diameter. The mesh size 15mm, 20mm are the current gears, 25mm, 30mm are used in experiment, and 35mm is the legal mesh. These were made 50 traps, respectively. The mesh selectivity curve was analysed by the Kitahara's method(1968) and the optimum mesh size was estimated by relationship between the total length and diameter of conger eel and by the mesh selectivity master curve. The results obtained are summarized follows : 1. The total number of catch by the trap for conger eel was 835, it was consisted of 537 conger eel(64.4), 225 crabs(2639%) and 73 others(8.7%). 2. The value of maximum 1/m on the mesh selectivity curve was estimated at about 23.9. 3. The optimum mesh size of spring frame trap for conger eel was estimated 34.0mm in 50% selection range of the mesh selectivity master curve.
