  • This paper deals whth the buckling as well as postbuckling analysis of axisymmertric shells taking the initial deflection effects into account. Incremental equilibrium equations, based on the principle of virtual work, were derived by the finite element method, the successive step-by-step Newton-Raphson iterative technique was adopted. To define the transition pattern of postbuckling behavior from the prebuckling state more accurately, a simple solution method was developed, i.e. the critical load was calculated by the load extrapolation method with the determinant of tangent stiffness matrix and the equilibrium configuration in the immediate postbuckling stage was obtained by perturbation scheme and eigenvalue analysis. Degenerated isoparametric shell elements were used to analyse the axisymmetric shell of revolution. And by the method developed in this paper, the computer program applicable to the nonlinear analysis of both thin and moderately thick shells was constructed. To verify the capabilities and accuracies of the present solution method, the computed results were compared with the results of analytical solutions. These results coincided fairly well in both the small deflection and large deflection ranges. Various numerical analyses were done to show the effect of initial deflection and shape of shells on buckling load and postbuckling behavior. Futhermore, corrected directions of applied loads at every increment steps were used to determine the actual effects of large deflection in non-conservative load systems such as hydrostatic pressure load. The following conclusions can be obtained. (1) The method described in this paper was found to be both economic and effective in calculating buckling load and postbuckling behavior of shell structure. (2) Buckling and postbuckling behavior of spherical caps is critically dependent upon their geometric configuration, i.e. the shape of spherical cap and quantities of the initial deflection. (3) In the analysis of large deflection problems of shells by the incremental method, corrections of the applied load directions are needed at every incremental step to compensate the follower force effects.

  • Compression tests were performed for six types of hat stiffened composite panels with different bonding methods and stiffener section shapes. Six panels showed similar behaviors in buckling and post-buckling region before a skin-stiffener separation failure occurred. The skin-stiffener separation failures occurred in the panels with closed type stiffeners regardless of bonding methods, but not in the panels with open type stiffeners. The separation failures not only reduced the postbuckling strength but also changed buckling mode and postbuckling stiffness. All the separation failures were initiated at the stiffener flange edges closest to skin buckling crests. The co-cured or secondary bonded panels with open type stiffeners had the largest structural performance. Because the post-buckling strength and performance of the composite stiffened panels are reduced by the separation failure, it is important to find bonding methods, stiffener types and manufacturing parameters for preventing of the separation failure.

  • In this work, a nonlocal zeroth-order shear deformation theory is developed for the nonlinear postbuckling behavior of nanoscale beams. The beauty of this formulation is that, in addition to including the nonlocal effect according to the nonlocal elasticity theory of Eringen, the shear deformation effect is considered in the axial displacement within the use of shear forces instead of rotational displacement like in existing shear deformation theories. The principle of virtual work together of the nonlocal differential constitutive relations of Eringen, are considered to obtain the equations of equilibrium. Closed-form solutions for the critical buckling load and the amplitude of the static nonlinear response in the postbuckling state for simply supported and clamped clamped nanoscale beams are determined.

  • An explicit direct time integration method based solution algorithm is proposed to predict dynamic postbuckling response of thin plates. Based on the von Karman's plate equations and Marquerre's shallow shell theory, a rectangular plate finite element is formulated and utilized in this study. The element formulation takes into account geometrical nonlinearity and initial deflection of plates. The solution algorithm employs the central difference method. Using the computer program developed by the authors, dynamic postbuckling behavior of elastic thin plates under impact loading is investigated by considering the time variation of load and load duration. The efficiency of the proposed solution algorithm is examined through illustrative numerical examples.

  • This paper deals with the buckling and postbuckling responses, and the progressive failure of square laminates of symmetric lay-up with a central rectangular cutout under in-plane shear load. A detailed investigation is made to show the effects of cutout size and cutout aspect ratio on the buckling and postbuckling responses, failure loads and failure characteristics of $(+45/-45/0/90)_{2s}$, $(+45/-45)_{4s}$ and $(0/90)_{4s}$ laminates. The 3-D Tsai-Hill criterion is used to predict the failure of a lamina while the onset of delamination is predicted by the interlaminar failure criterion. In addition, the effects of boundary conditions on buckling loads, failure loads, failure modes, and maximum transverse deflection for a $(+45/-45/0/90)_{2s}$ laminate with and without a square cutout have been presented. It is concluded that because of early onset of delamination at the net section of cutouts before first-ply failure, total strength of the laminate with very small cutouts can not be utilized.

  • In the present study, the limit point buckling and postbuckling behaviors of sinusoidal, shallow arches with pinned supports subjected to localized sinusoidal loading, based on the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, are numerically analyzed. There are some studies on the buckling of sinusoidal shallow arches under the effect of sinusoidal loading. However, in these studies, the sinusoidal loading acts along the horizontal projection of the entire shallow arch. No study has been found in the relevant literature pertaining to the stability of the shallow arches subjected to various lengths of sinusoidal loading. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is to contribute to the literature by examining the effect of the length of the localized sinusoidal loading and the initial rise of the shallow arch on the limit point buckling and postbuckling behaviors. Equilibrium paths corresponding to certain values of the length of the localized sinusoidal loading and various values of the initial rise parameter are presented. It has been observed that the length of the sinusoidal loading and the initial rise parameter affects the transition from no buckling to limit point instability remarkably. The deformed configurations of the sinusoidal shallow arch under localized loading regarding buckling and postbuckling states are illustrated, as well. The effects of the length of the localized sinusoidal loading on the internal forces of the shallow arch are investigated during various stages of the loading.

  • This study conducts numerical analyses of a thin-walled composite cylinder under axial compression and internal pressure of 10 kPa. Numerical vibration correlation technique and nonlinear postbuckling analyses are conducted using the nonlinear finite element analysis program, ABAQUS. The single perturbation load approach and measured imperfection data are used to represent the geometric initial imperfection of thin-walled composite cylinder. The buckling knockdown factors are derived using present initial imperfection and analysis methods under axial compression without and with the internal pressure. Furthermore, the buckling knockdown factors are compared with the buckling test and computation time are calculated. In this study, derived buckling knockdown factors in present study have difference within 10% as compared with the buckling test. It is shown that nonlinear postbuckling analysis can derive relatively accurate buckling knockdown factor of present thin-walled cylinders, however, numerical vibration correlation technique derives reasonable buckling knockdown factors compared with buckling test. Therefore, this study shows that numerical vibration correlation technique can also be considered as an effective numerical method with 21~91% reduced computation time than nonlinear postbuckling analysis for the derivation of buckling knockdown factors of present composite cylinders.

  • In this study, a shape optimization of stiffener was conducted to increase buckling load or failure load in each case with a different design value and a different objective function for stiffened laminated composite panel of I-type under compression loading. Regarding each of buckling load or failure load as objective function, optimum design was carried out. In respect of optimum design, the effects of relative length of web and cab of stiffener on buckling load or failure load of postbuckling were investigated.

  • Laminate composites have a number of excellent characteristics in aspects of strength, stiffness, bending, and buckling. Buckling and postbuckling analysis of laminate composites with layups of [90/0]2s, $[{\pm}45/90/0]s$, $[{\pm}45]2s$ has been carried using the Total Lagrangian nonlinear Newton-Raphson method. The formulation of a geometrically nonlinear composite shell element based on a nonlinear large deformation method is presented. The used element is an eight-node degenerated shell element with six degrees of freedom. Square, circular cylinder, and arch panel laminate geometries were analyzed to verify the effects of the layups on the buckling and postbuckling behavior. The results showed that the effects of laminate layups on bucking and postbuckling behavior and the present formulation showed very good agreement with existing references.
