The existing microplane models for concrete ust three-dimensional spherical microplanes even in the analyses for two-dimensional members. Also, they can not describe accurately the post-cracking behavior of reinforced concrete in tension-compression. In this study, a new microplane model that is appropriate for the analyses of reinforced concrete planar members was developed to complement these disadvantages of the existing models. The proposed microplane model uses disk microplanes instead of the existing spherical ones. This new model is effective in numerical analysis because it uses less number of microplanes and two-dimensional stresses. Also, in this microplane model a concept of strain boundary was introduced to describe compressive behavior of reinforced concrete in tension-compression.

Although many structures. with high strength concrete have been recently constructed, the flexural behavior of reinforced and prestressed concrete beams with high strength concrete is not exactly defined. This paper presents an experimental study on the flexural strength of the high strength concrete beams. Five large scale beams simply supported were tested and measured. Each beam was loaded by two symmetrical concentrated loads applied at 1.25m from the center of span. The concrete strength, the prestressed force and longitudinal tensile reinforcement ratio vary from beam to beam. From the experimental tests, the flexural strength from tests is larger than the nominal flexural strength of codes. Moreover, the initial crack-load is affected by the prestressed force and the crack width and spacing are controlled by the longitudinal tensile reinforcement ratio.
This paper presents a new hypoelasticity model which was implemented in a nonlinear finite element formulation to analyze reinforced concrete (RC) structures. The model includes a new hypoelasticity constitutive relationship utilizing the rotation of material axis through successive iterations. The model can account for high nonlinearity of the stress-strain behavior of the concrete in the pre-peak regime, the softening behavior of the concrete in the post-peak regime and the irrecoverable volume dilatation at high levels of compressive load. This research introduces the modified version of the common application orthotropic stress-strain relation developed by Darwin and Pecknold. It is endeavored not to violate the principal of "simplicity" by improvement of the "capability" The results of analyses of experimental reinforced concrete walls are presented to confirm the abilities of the proposed relationships.
Concrete construction, one of the oldest building practices, is commonly used in all parts of the world. Concrete is the primary building material for both residential and commercial constructions. The challenge of protecting the buildings, hence nation, against the attack of terrorism has raised the importance to explore the understanding of building materials against the explosion. In this research, a security check-post (reinforced concrete frame filled with plain cement concrete) has been chosen to study the behavior of structural elements under blast loading. Eight nitroglycerines-based dynamite blasts with varying amounts of explosive charge, up to 17 kg weight has been carried out at various scale distances. Pressure and acceleration time history records are measured using blast measuring instruments. Security check post after being exposed by explosive loading are photographed to view cracking/failure patterns on the structural elements. It is noted that with the increase of quantity of explosive, the dimensions of spalling and crack patterns increase on the front panels. Simple empirical analyses are conducted using ConWep and other design manuals such as UFC 3-340-02 (2008) and AASTP-1 (2010) for the purpose of comparison of blast parameters with the experimental records. The results of experimental workings are also compared with earlier researchers to check the compatibility of developed equations. It is believed that the current study presents the simple and preliminary procedure for calculating the air blast and ground shock parameters on the structures exposed to blast explosion.
A rational three-dimensional nonlinear finite element model is described and implemented for evaluating the behavior of high strength concrete slabs under transverse load. The concrete was idealized by using twenty-nodded isoparametric brick elements with embedded reinforcements. The concrete material modeling allows for normal (NSC) and high strength concrete (HSC), which was calibrated based on experimental data. The behavior of concrete in compression is simulated by an elastoplastic work-hardening model, and in tension a suitable post-cracking model based on tension stiffening and shear retention models are employed. The nonlinear equations have been solved using the incremental iterative technique based on the modified Newton-Raphson method. The FE formulation and material modeling is implemented into a finite element code in order to carry out the numerical study and to predict the behavior up to ultimate conditions of various slabs under transverse loads. The validity of the theoretical formulations and the program used was verified through comparison with available experimental data, and the agreement has proven to be very good. A parametric study has been also carried out to investigate the influence of different material and geometric properties on the behavior of HSC slabs. Influencing factors, such as concrete strength, steel ratio, aspect ratio, and support conditions on the load-deflection characteristics, concrete and steel stresses and strains were investigated.
This study reports the details of the finite element analysis of eleven shear critical partially prestressed concrete T-beams having steel fibers over partial or full depth. Prestressed concrete T-beams having a shear span to depth ratio of 2.65 and 1.59 and failing in the shear have been analyzed using 'ANSYS'. The 'ANSYS' model accounts for the nonlinear phenomenon, such as, bond-slip of longitudinal reinforcements, post-cracking tensile stiffness of the concrete, stress transfer across the cracked blocks of the concrete and load sustenance through the bridging of steel fibers at crack interface. The concrete is modeled using 'SOLID65'-eight-node brick element, which is capable of simulating the cracking and crushing behavior of brittle materials. The reinforcements such as deformed bars, prestressing wires and steel fibers have been modeled discretely using 'LINK8' - 3D spar element. The slip between the reinforcement (rebar, fibers) and the concrete has been modeled using a 'COMBIN39'-non-linear spring element connecting the nodes of the 'LINK8' element representing the reinforcement and nodes of the 'SOLID65' elements representing the concrete. The 'ANSYS' model correctly predicted the diagonal tension failure and shear compression failure of prestressed concrete beams observed in the experiment. The capability of the model to capture the critical crack regions, loads and deflections for various types of shear failures in prestressed concrete beam has been illustrated.
Self-Compacting Concrete (SCC) has been originally developed in Japan to offset a growing shortage of skilled labors, is a highly workable concrete, which is not needed to any vibration or impact during casting. The utilizing of fibers in SCC improves the mechanical properties and durability of hardened concrete such as impact strength, flexural strength, and vulnerability to cracking. The purpose of this investigation is to determine the effect of steel fibers on mechanical performance of traditionally reinforced Self-Competing Concrete beams. In this study, two mixes Mix 1% and Mix 2% containing 1% and 2% volume friction of superplasticizer are considered. For each type of mixture, four different volume percentages of 60/30 (length/diameter) fibers of 0.0%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2% were used. The mechanical properties were determined through compressive and flexural tests. According to the experimental test results, an increase in the steel fibers volume fraction in Mix 1% and Mix 2% improves compressive strength slightly but decreases the workability and other rheological properties of SCC. On the other hand, results revealed that flexural strength, energy absorption capacity and toughness are increased by increasing the steel fiber volume fraction. The results clearly show that the use of fibers improves the post-cracking behavior. The average spacing of between cracks decrease by increasing the fiber volume fraction. Furthermore, fibers increase the tensile strength by bridging actions through the cracks. Therefore, steel fibers increase the ductility and energy absorption capacity of RC elements subjected to flexure.

Experimental study has been performed in order to investigate the behavior of RC beams strengthened with externally bonded post-tensioned CFRP (Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer) strips. Specimens consist of 9 small-scaled specimens with the different post-tensioning level as a main test parameter. A control specimen and specimens with simply bonded CFRP strips have been manufactured to compare the structural performances of prestressed system. From the test results, it was observed that the specimens strengthened with simply bonded CFRP strips showed debonding failure below 50% of CFRP tensile strength due to premature debonding. On the other hand, all the specimens strengthened with post- tensioned CFRP strips reached the rupture strength of the CFRP strip. The cracking and yielding loads were also increased proportionally to the post-tensioning level, but the ultimate loads were nearly equal regardless of the post-tensioning level.
Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC) is distinguished from the normal concrete by outstanding compressive and tensile strength. Cracked normal concrete resists shear by aggregate interlocking while clamped by transverse reinforcement, which is called as shear friction theory. Cracked UHPFRC is expected to have a different shear transfer mechanism due to rather smooth crack face and post-cracking behavior under tensile force. Twenty-four push-off specimens with transverse reinforcement are tested for four different fiber volume ratio and three different ratio of reinforcement along the shear plane. The shear friction strength for monolithic concrete are suggested by limit analysis of plasticity and verified by test results. Plastic analysis gives a conservative, but reasonable estimate. The suggested shear friction factor and effectiveness factor of UHPFRC can be applied for interface shear transfer design of high-strength concrete and fiber reinforced concrete with post-cracking tensile strength.
In this article, the flexural and shear capacity of ultra-high-performance fiber-reinforced concrete beams (UHPFRC) using two kinds of rebars, including GFRP and steel rebars, are experimentally investigated. For this purpose, six UHPFRC beams (250 × 300 × 1650 mm) with three reinforcement ratios (ρ) of 0.64, 1.05, and 1.45 were constructed using 2% steel fibers by volume. Half of the specimens were made of UHPFRC reinforced with GFRP rebars, while the other half were reinforced with conventional steel rebars. All specimens were tested to failure in four-point bending. Both the load-deformation at mid-span and the failure pattern were studied. The results showed that utilizing GFRP bars increases the flexural strength of UHPFRC beams in comparison to those made of steel bars, but at the same time, it reduces the post-cracking strain hardening. Furthermore, by increasing the percentage of longitudinal bars, both the post-cracking strain hardening and load-bearing capacity increase. Comparing the experiment results with some of the available equations and provisions cited in the valid design codes reveals that some of the equations to predict the flexural strength of UHPFRC beams reinforced with conventional steel and GFRP bars are reasonably conservative, while Khalil and Tayfur model is un-conservative. This issue makes it essential to modify the presented equations in this research for predicting the flexural strength of UHPFRC beams using GFRP bars.
