  • A radiotracer technique has been developed to monitor the rotational movement of two piston rings in one cylinder during engine operation. The rings were labeled with two different kinds of radioisotopes, i.e. $^{60}$ Co and $^{192}$ Ir, for identification of the top ring from the second ring. The radiotracers were implanted in a small hole bored on the inner side of each piston ring. The rings were installed in a single cylinder hydrogen engine and three Nal scintillation detectors were mounted around the engine block to measure the gamma radiation. The angle of ring-gap orientation was determined from the radiation counts measured with the three detectors during engine operation. Two windows (upper window for $^{60}$ Co and lower window for $^{192}$ Ir) were set on each ratemeter to count radiation from the two isotopes separately. Procedure to convert the radiation counts to the position of the ring gap was established. With the software programmed with MS-Visualbasic, radiation counts were compared with the reference responses that were measured at angular intervals of 10$^{\circ}$for each piston ring in advance of the experiment. The result was used for the evaluation of the relationship between the orientation of ring-gaps and oil consumption. It was found that an increase in the oil consumption rate of a specific operation condition was closely related to the relative phase angle of the two piston rings.

  • Ring forging process is more appropriate for high-length and thin walled ring, because it utilizes the forging press and hence does not require heavy-duty ring rolling mill. Although ring forging process is very simple and economic for facilities, the process is not efficient because of multi-forging-step and low material utilization. An effective ring forging process is developed using a hollow ingot. When a hollow ingot is used with a workpiece, the ingot can be forged into a final ring without multi-stage pre-forging process, such as, cogging, upsetting, and piercing, etc.. Finally it has advantages of the material utilization and process improvement because a few reheating and forging process are not necessary to make workpiece for ring forging. The important design variables are the applied plastic deformation energy to eliminate cast structure and make uniform properties. In this study, the mechanical properties after forging of hollow cast ingot were investigated from the experiment using circumferential sectional model. Also, the effects of process variables were studied by FEM simulation on the basis of thermo-visco-plastic constitutive equation. Applied strain is different at each position in length direction because diameter of hollow ingot is different in length direction. The different strain distribution become into a narrow gap by additional plastic deformation during diameter extension process.

  • In this paper, frequency analysis has been done for functionally graded cylindrical shell with ring supports using Sander's shell theory. The vibrations of rotating cylindrical shells are analyzed for different physical factors. The fundamental natural frequency is investigated for different parameters such as: ratios of length-to-diameter ring supports. By increasing different value of height-to-radius ratio, the resulting backward and forward frequencies increase and frequencies decrease on increasing height-to-radius ratio. The frequencies for different position of ring supports are obtained in the form of bell shaped. The backward frequencies increases and forward frequencies decrease on increasing the rotating speed. The results generated furnish the evidence regarding applicability of present shell model and also verified by earlier published literature.

  • A hybrid finite element analysis was used to analyze the influence of ring gear rim thickness and spline number on the static properties of an epicyclic gear system with manufacturing errors. Both of these parameters affected the bearing force and critical stress. The effect of changes in the rim thickness on the load sharing between the gears depended on the type of manufacturing error. Ring flexibility improved the load sharing between planetary gears only in systems with planet tooth thickness or planet tangential errors; for other types of error, ring flexibility worsened the load sharing. To improve load sharing, rim thickness and spline number should be controlled within a specific range. The effect of the ring gear boundary condition was more apparent in a system with errors than in a normal system.

  • An iris image pattern positioning with preserved edge detector, ring zone and clock zone, frequency distribution and overlay matching is presented in this paper. Edge detector is required to be powerful and detail. That is proposed by overlaying Canny with LOG (CLOG). The two reference patterns are made from allocating each gray level on the clock zone and ring zone respectively. The normalized target image is overlaid with the clock zone reference pattern and the ring zone pattern to extract overlapped number, and make a matched frequency distribution to look through a symptom and position of human organ and tissue. The iterating experiments result in the ring and clock zone positioning evaluation.

  • This paper reports on the theoretical analysis on the lubrication characteristics between the piston ring and the grooved cylinder liner. The circular shape piston ring and two types grooves are consider, and the minimum oil film thickness during the full engine cycle are obtained by using iterative technique. The comparative results of minimum oil film thickness and viscous friction force between the smooth and grooved liner are presented. And various design parameter of piston ring and liner groove are tested. The groove in the liner generally reduces the minimum value of minimum oil film thickness, but the maximum viscous friction force is increased at the minimum film position.

  • A series of aluminum complexes supported by $\beta$-ketoamino, ligand-bearing, 3-position substituents $LAlEt_2$ ($L=CH_3C(O)C(Cl)=C(CH_3)NAr\;(L_1)$, $L=CH_3C(O)C(H)=C(CH_3)NAr\;(L_2)$, $L=CH_3C(O)C(Ph)=C(CH_3)NAr\;(L_3)$, and $L=CH_3C(O)C(Me)=C(CH_3)NAr\;(L_4)$, $Ar=2,6-^iPr_2C6H_3$) were synthesized in situ and employed in the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of $\varepsilon$-caprolactone ($\varepsilon$-CL) and cyclohexene oxide (CHO). The 3-position substituents on the $\beta$-ketoamino ligand backbone of the aluminum complexes influenced the catalyst activity remarkably for both ROP of $\varepsilon$-CL and CHO. Aluminum $\beta$-ketoamino complexes displayed different catalytic behavior in ROP of $\varepsilon$-CL and CHO. The order of the catalytic activity of $LAlEt_2$ was $L_1AlEt_2$>$L_2AlEt_2$>$L_3AlEt_2$>$L_4AlEt_2$ for ROP of $\varepsilon$-CL, being opposite to the electron-donating ability of the 3-position substituents on the $\beta$-ketoamino ligand, while the order of the catalytic activity for ROP of CHO was $L_1AlEt_2$>$L_3AlEt_2$>$L_4AlEt_2$>$L_2AlEt_2$. The effects of reaction temperature and time on the ROP were also investigated for both $\varepsilon$-CL and CHO.

  • Ice ring formation, one of the core techniques in LNG storage in a lined rock cavern, is investigated through hydro-thermal coupled analysis. An ice ring acts as a secondary barrier in case of leakage of cryogenic liquid and as a primary barrier for groundwater intrusion into an LNG cavern. Therefore, the thickness and location of the ice ring are crucial factors for the safe operation of an LNG storage cavern, especially for maintaining the integrity of a primary barrier composed of concrete, PU foam, and steel membrane. Through numerical analyses, the position and thickness of the ice ring are estimated, and the temperature and groundwater level are compared with measured values. The temperature md groundwater level by numerical analyses show good agreement with the field measurements when temperature-dependent properties and phase change are taken into account. The schemes used in this paper can be applied for estimation of ice ring formation in designing a full-scale LNG cavern.
