The gyroscope free strap-down INS is composed only of accelerometers. Any gyroscope free INS navigation error is deeply affected by the accuracy of the sensor bias, scale factor, orientation and location error. However these parameters can be found by calibration. There is an important research issue about a multi-position calibration method in this paper. It provides a novel method to find the error parameters for the six-accelerometer INS. A superior simulation is shown that the multi-position calibration can find the specifications of a six-accelerometer INS in laboratory. From these parameters the six-accelerometer INS could apply in realistic navigation.
A vision-based tool position estimation system for the inspection and maintenance manipulator working inside the steam generator bowl of nuclear power plants can help human operators ensure that the inspection probe or plug are inserted to the targeted tube. Some previous research proposed a simplified tube position verification system that counts the tubes passed through during the motion and displays only the position of the tool. In this paper, by using a general camera calibration approach, tool orientation is also estimated. In order to reduce the computation time and avoid the parameter bias problem in an ellipse fitting, a small number of edge points are collected around the large section of the ellipse boundary. Experiment results show that the camera calibration parameters, detected ellipses, and estimated tool position are appropriate.
Recently, with the development of service robots and with the new concept of ubiquitous world, the position estimation of mobile objects has been raised to an important problem. As pre-liminary research results, some of the localization schemes are introduced, which provide the absolute location of the moving objects subjected to large errors. To implement a precise and convenient localization system, a new absolute position estimation method for a mobile robot in indoor environment is proposed in this paper. Design and implementation of the localization system comes from the usage of active beacon systems (based upon RFID technology). The active beacon system is composed of an RFID receiver and an ultra-sonic transmitter: 1. The RFID receiver gets the synchronization signal from the mobile robot and 2. The ultra-sonic transmitter sends out the traveling signal to be used for measuring the distance. Position of a mobile robot in a three dimensional space can be calculated basically from the distance information from three beacons and the absolute position information of the beacons themselves. Since it is not easy to install the beacons at a specific position precisely, there exists a large localization error and the installation time takes long. To overcome these problems, and provide a precise and convenient localization system, a new auto calibration algorithm is developed in this paper. Also the extended Kalman filter has been adopted for improving the localization accuracy during the mobile robot navigation. The localization accuracy improvement through the proposed auto calibration algorithm and the extended Kalman filter has been demonstrated by the real experiments.
Odometry using wheel encoders is one of the fundamental techniques for the pose estimation of wheeled mobile robots. However, odometry has a drawback that the position errors are accumulated when the travel distance increases. Therefore, position errors are required to be reduced using appropriate calibration schemes. The UMBmark method is the one of the widely used calibration schemes for two wheel differential drive robots. In UMBmark method, it is assumed that odometry error sources are independent. However, there is coupled effect of odometry error sources. In this paper, a new calibration scheme by considering the coupled effect of error sources is proposed. We also propose the test track design for the proposed calibration scheme. The numerical simulation and experimental results show that the odometry accuracy can be improved by the proposed calibration scheme.
Robot calibration needs accurate measurements of robot end-effector position at a number of different robot configurations. One of the efficient ways of the measurement is "Touching on Jig" method suggested in [7], which utilizes a touch sensor and a fixture consisting of various sizes of blocks. By moving the end-effector to touch the surface of a block whose position relative to the other is known, the end-effector position relative to the fixture coordinate system can be obtained at the instant of touching. However, the global size of fixture is too small to cover the various configurations of the robot. Because of the manufacturing difficulties, the fixture cannot be manufactured large enough for well distributed position measurement. It results in the improvement of robot accuracy only in the limited space near to the fixture rather than over the whole space of the robot working volume. The paper proposes a method to resolve the above problem by measuring the end-effector positions with respect to several different coordinate system using the same measurement devices. It is found that the proposed method leads the improvements of robot position accuracy over the large space of working volume. The experimental studies are performed to show the validity of the method and their results are discussed.
In this study, we have developed an algorithm by attaching a camera at the end-effector of industrial six-axis robot in order to determine position and orientation of the camera system from cartesian coordinates. Cartesian coordinate as a starting point to evaluate for suggested algorithm, it was easy to confront increase of orientation vector for a linear line point that connects two points from coordinate space applied by recursive least square method which includes previous data result and new data result according to increase of image point. Therefore, when the camera attached to the end-effector has been applied to production location, with a calibration mask that has more than eight points arranged, this simulation approved that it is possible to determine position and orientation of cartesian coordinates of camera system even without a special measuring equipment.
This paper proposes a self-calibration method of robots those are used in industrial assembly lines. The proposed method is a position compensation using laser sensor and vision camera. Because the laser sensor is cross type laser sensor which can scan a horizontal and vertical line, it is efficient way to detect a feature of vehicle and winding shape of vehicle's body. For position compensation of 3-Dimensional axis, we applied block interpolation method. For selecting feature point, pattern matching method is used and 3-D position is selected by Euclidean distance mapping between 462 feature values and evaluated feature point. In order to evaluate the proposed algorithm, experiments are performed in real industrial vehicle assembly line. In results, robot's working point can be displayed 3-D points. These points are used to diagnosis error of position and reselecting working point.
Accurate estimation of the robot's position has an important role in autonomous navigation. Odometry is one of the most widely used techniques for mobile robot positioning. However, odometry has a well-known drawback that the position errors are accumulated when the travel distance increases. The UMBmark method is the conventional odometry calibration scheme for two wheel differential mobile robots. In the UMBmark method, the approximations for small angles are used in order to simplify the calculations. In this paper, we propose the new calibration scheme by using experimental orientation errors. Kinematic parameters can be calculated accurately without approximations by using experimental orientation errors. The numerical simulation and experimental results show that the odometry accuracy can be improved by the proposed method.
Camera calibration is very important problem in 3D measurement using vision system. In this paper is proposed the simple method for camera calibration. It is designed that uses the principle of vanishing points and the concept of corresponding points extracted from the parallel line pairs. Conventional methods are necessary for 4 reference points in one frame. But we proposed has need for only 2 reference points to estimate vanishing points. It has to calculate camera parameters, focal length, camera attitude and position. Our experiment shows the validity and the usability from the result that absolute error of attitude and position is in $10^{-2}$.

Kinematic calibration enhances absolute accuracy by compensating for the fabrication tolerances and installation errors. Effectiveness of calibration procedures depends greatly on the measurements performed. While the Cartesian postures are measured completely, all of the geometric parameters can be identified to their true values. With partial pose measurements, however, few geometric parameters may not be identifiable and effectiveness of the calibration results may vary significantly within the workspace. QR decomposition of the identification Jacobian matrix can reveal the non-identifiable parameters. Selecting postures for measurement is also an important issue for efficient calibration procedure. Typically, the condition number of the identification Jacobian is minimized to find optimum postures. This paper investigates identifiable parameters and optimum postures for four different calibration procedures - measuring postures completely with inverse kinematic residuals, measuring postures completely with forward kinematics residuals, measuring only the three position components, and restraining the mobility of the end-effector using a constraint link. The study is performed for a six degree-of-freedom fully parallel HexaSlide type paralle manipulator, HSM. Results verify that all parameters are identifiable with complete posture measurements. For the case of position measurements, one and for the case of constraint link, three parameters were found non-identifiable. Optimal postures showed the same trend of orienting themselves on the boundaries of the search space.
