Porous Ti compacts were fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) method and their in vitro and in vivo biocompatibilities were investigated. Alkaline phosphatase (ALP) activity representing the activity of osteoblast was increased when osteoblast-like MG-63 cells were cultured on the Ti powder surface. Some genes related to cell growth were over-expressed through microarray analysis. The porous Ti compact with 32.2% of porosity was implanted in the subcutaneous tissue of rats to confirm in vivo cytotoxicity. 12 weeks post-operation, outer surface and inside the porous body was fully filled with fibrous tissue and the formation of new blood vessels were observed. No inflammatory response was confirmed. To investigate the osteoinduction, porous Ti compact was implanted in the femur of NZW rabbits for 4 months. Active in-growth of new bone from the surrounded compact bone was observed around the porous body. From the results, The porous Ti compacts fabricated by spark plasma sintering might be available for the application of the stem part of artificial hip joint.
Experiments on evaporative spray cooling on the square plate heaters with plain or micro-porous coated surfaces were performed in this study. Micro-porous coated surfaces were made by using DOM [Diamond particle, Omegabond 101, Methyl-Ethyl-Keton] method. In case of purely air-jet cooling, the micro-porous coating doesn't affect the cooling capacity. In spray cooling three different flow patterns (complete wetting, evaporative wetting, dryout) are observed on both plain and micro-porous coated surfaces. The effects of various operating conditions, such as water flow rate, particle size, and coating thickness were investigated on the micro-porous coated surfaces. It is found that the level of surface wetting is an important factor to determine the performance of spray cooling. It depends on the balance between absorbed liquid amount by capillary force over porosity and the evaporative amount. The micro-porous coated surface has largest cooling capacity, especially in the evaporative wetting zone. It is found that the effects of liquid flow rate and coating thickness are significant in evaporative wetting zone, but are not in complete wetting and dryout zones.
An experimental study of pool boiling behavior on micro-porous enhanced square heater surfaces immersed in PF5060 is performed. The effects of heater orientation, Subcooling and substrate distance on the pool boiling heat transfer performance for the double heaters were investigated under increasing heat-flux conditions. The boiling performance of micro-porous coated surface was better than that of plain surface. The double heaters with upper substrate of 0.2cm substrate interval have lower boiling performances compared with the results for the double heaters with that of 0.5cm and 1.0cm substrate interval and without the substrate. In comparison to upper heater and below heater with orientation, the upper heater has lower superheat temperature than the below heater due to the bubble sweeping.

Ni films with a thickness of 700-800 nm were deposited on carbon fiber layers using electroless deposition, and surface structures and chemical properties of these films with various annealing temperatures (300, 600 and $900^{\circ}C$) were studied. $600^{\circ}C$-annealing under atmospheric conditions resulted in formation of porous surface structures with a mean pore size of ~100 nm, whereas the other samples showed non-porous surface structures. $600^{\circ}C$-annealed Ni film showed much higher reactivities for toluene adsorption and CO oxidation comparing to other non-porous surfaces.
This article is concerned with the overview of activated carbons as electrode materials in electric double-layer capacitors. Firstly, this article introduced various types of activated carbons with their precursors and manufacturing conditions which can be divided into two main steps of the carbonization and activation processes. Secondly, the present article gave the detailed discussion about the porous structures and examined previous works on the electrochemical behaviors of activated carbons in relation to their porous structures, along with our recent works. Finally, this article characterized the surface oxygen functional groups and presented their influence on the electrochemical properties of activated carbons by reviewing our recent results.
The electroplating of the Ag ions from aqueous solution on activated porous carbons was investigated over a wide range of plating time. The adsorption capacities of Ag metallic carbons were associated with their internal porosity and were related to physical properties such as surface area and pore size distribution. And, surface morphologies and quantitative analysis for the metal supported carbons are investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy disperse X-ray (EDX) measurements to explain the changes in adsorption properties. It is considered that the pH is an very important factor at the reason of water pollutant with increasing acidity in industrial field. The results of ICP-AES analysis showed that the residual concentration of Ag ions decreased with an increasing electroplating time. The metallic Ag-activated porous carbons electroplated showed microbicidal effects and strong antibacterial activity against six kinds of strains that were used. Finally, we confirmed that the presence of the electrolytic plated Ag-activated porous carbons is a determining factor in the HCl removal by chemical reaction, clarifying the surface chemical behavior.
Active clays, Diatomite, bentonite and zeolite were used as porous materials for fabricating hygroscopic gypsum boards. Pohang active clay and Cheolwon diatomite showed excellent characteristics of moisture adsorption and desorption. These characteristics were caused by higher surface area and pore volume of porous materials. Moisture adsorption content of gypsum board with 10% active clay(P1) was 62.0 g/m$^2$, and moisture desorption content was 50.2 g/m$^2$. Moisture adsorption content of gypsum board with 10% diatomite(P) was 59.5 g/m$^2$, and moisture desorption content was 49.0 g/m$^2$. Moisture adsorption contents of gypsum boards with porous materials were higher than that moisture desorption contents of gypsum board without porous materials. Correlation coefficient between surface area and moisture adsorption content of gypsum boards was 0.98. Also, correlation coefficient between surface area and moisture desorption content of gypsum boards was 0.97. Moisture adsorption and desorption contents were influenced by surface area and pore volume of the gypsum boards, and surface area had a larger effect on moisture adsorption and desorption.
The effects of porous wind fence on the pressure characteristics around a 2-dimensional prism model of triangular cross-section were investigated experimentally. The fence and prism model were embedded in a neutral atmospheric surface boundary layer over the city suburb. In this study, various fences of different porosity, back fence, inclination angle of prism and location of additional back prisms were tested to investigate their effects on the pressure and wall shear stress of the prism surface. The fence and prism had the same height of 40 mm and Reynolds number based on the model height was Re=3.9*10$^{4}$. The porous fence with porosity 40% was found to be the best wind fence for decreasing the mean and pressure fluctuations on the prism surface. By installing the fence of porosity 40%, the wall shear stress on the windward surface of prism was largely decreased up to 1/3 of that without the fence. This indicates that the porous fence is most effective to abate the wind erosion. Pressure fluctuations on the model surface were decreased more than half when a back fence was located behind the prism in addition to the front fence. With locating several back prisms and decreasing the inclination angle of triangular prism, the pressure fluctuations on the model surface were increased on the contrary.
Graphite has excellent mechanical and physical properties. It is known to advanced materials and is used to materials for molds, thermal treatment of furnace, sinter of diamond and cemented carbide tool etc. SiC materials are coated on the surface and holes of graphite to protect particles emitted from porous graphite with 5%~20% porosity and make graphite hard surface. SiC materials have high durability and thermal stability. Thermal CVD method is widely used to manufacture SiC thin films but high cost of machine investment and production are required. SiC thin films manufactured by Si reaction liquid and vapore with carbon are effective because of low cost of machine and production. SiC thin films made by vapor silicon infiltration into porous graphite can be obtained for shorter time than liquid silicon. Si materials are evaporated to the graphite surface in about $10^{-2}$ torr and high temperature. Si materials are melted in $1410^{\circ}C$. Si vapor is infiltrated into the surface hole of porous graphite and $Si_xC_y$ compound is made. $Si_x$ component is proportional to the Si vapor concentration. Si diffusion coefficient is estimated from quadratic equation obtained by Fick's second law. The steady stae is assumed. Si concentration variation for the depth from graphite surface is fitted to quadratic equation. Diffusion coefficient of Si vapor is estimated at about $10^{-8}cm^2s^{-1}$.
Three types of functionalized flexible optical composite films based on Bragg structure porous silicon interferometer have been successfully fabricated by casting a toluene solution of polystyrene onto the free-standing porous silicon. The optical properties of composite films are measured. Surface functionalization of porous silicon is determined by FT-IR measurement. Reflectance and transparence properties of composite films are measured for the possible application of tunable optical filter and indicate that the transmission peak occurred at the identical location where the reflection peak appeared.
