The purpose of this paper is to find a more accurate method to evaluate pedestrian wind by computational fluid dynamics approach. Previous computational fluid dynamics studies of wind environmental problems were mostly performed by simplified models, which only use simple geometric shapes, such as cubes and cylinders, to represent buildings and structures. However, to have more accurate and complete evaluation results, various shapes of blocking objects, such as trees, should also be taken into consideration. The aerodynamic effects of these various shapes of objects can decrease wind velocity and increase turbulence intensity. Previous studies simply omitted the errors generated from these various shapes of blocking objects. Adding real geometrical trees to the numerical models makes the calculating domain of CFD very complicated due to geometry generation and grid meshing problems. In this case the function of Porous Media Condition can solve the problem by adding trees into numerical models without increasing the mesh grids. The comparison results between numerical and wind tunnel model are close if the parameters of porous media condition are well adjusted.
Mechanical behavior in nano-sized structures differs from those in macro sized structures due to surface effect. As the ratio of surface to volume increases, surface effect is not negligible and causes size-dependent mechanical behavior. In order to identify this size effect, atomistic simulations are required; however, it has many limitations because too much computational resource and time are needed. To overcome the restrictions of the atomistic simulations and graft the well-established continuum theories, the continuum model considering surface effect, which is based on the bridging technique between atomistic and continuum simulations, is introduced. Because it reflects the size effect, it is possible to carry out a variety of analysis which is intractable in the atomistic simulations. As a part of the application examples, the homogenization method is applied to micro/nano thin films with porosity and the homogenized elastic coefficients of the nano scale thickness porous films are computed in this paper.
Absorbers such as porous materials and panels have limited absorption characteristics to some frequency bands. There is a need for absorbers with high absorption coefficients in a wide frequency ranges to make good response of room acoustics. This is almost impossible for a single absorption material. Composite absorption structure with cover, porous material. and air gap is known to have those wide frequency characteristics. In this basis. various composite absorption structures are measured and investigated as wide range absorption structures. Measurements are performed according to an international standard, ISO 354. Various surface types such as wooden slits, wood/steel perforated panels are selected as surface covers, and also various porous materials such as polyurethanes, polyesters, and glasswools are used inside the covers. Result shows that the area of void parts of surface materials is critical to high frequency absorptions, and thickness of air gaps are critical factor of the peak absorptions of low frequency bands.
Reformers which produce hydrogen from natural gas are essential for the operation of residential PEM fuel cells. For this purpose, steam-methane reforming reactions with Ni catalysts is primarily utilized. Commercial Ni catalysts are generally made to have porous pellet shapes in which Ni catalyst particles are uniformly dispersed over Alumina support structures. This study numerically investigates the reduction of catalyst effectiveness due to the mass transport resistances posed by porous structures of spherical catalyst pellets. The multi-component diffusion through porous media and the accurate kinetics of reforming reaction is fully considered in the numerical model. The preliminary results on the variation of the effectiveness factor according to different operation conditions are presented, which is planned to be used to develop correlations in future studies.

A finite element method analysis framework is introduced for the free vibration analyses of functionally graded porous beam structures by employing two variables trigonometric shear deformation theory. Both Young's modulus and material density of the FGP beam element are simultaneously considered as grading through the thickness of the beam. The finite element approach is developed using a nonlocal strain gradient theory. The governing equations derived here are solved introducing a 3-nodes beam element. A comprehensive parametric study is carried out, with a particular focus on the effects of various structural parameters such as the dispersion patterns of GPL reinforcements and porosity, thickness ratio, boundary conditions, nonlocal scale parameter and strain gradient parameters. The results indicate that porosity distribution and GPL pattern have significant effects on the response of the nanocomposite beams.
In the current examination, a trigonometric shear deformation theory is hired to govern natural frequencies of a functionally graded porous microplate which is covered by two nanocomposite layers. The properties of the structure are varied based on the specified patterns. Utilizing the modified form of couple stress theory for taking the scale effect into account in conjunction with Hamilton's principle, the motion equations are obtained. Then, they are solved via Fourier series functions as an analytical approach. After confirming the results' accuracy, various parameters' effect on the results is investigated. Designing and manufacturing more efficient structures, especially those that are subjected to multi-physical loads can be accounted as findings of this work.
Much interest has been focused on InGaN-based materials and their quantum structures due to their optoelectronics applications such as light emitting diode (LED) and photovoltaic devices, because of its high thermal conductivity, high optical efficiency, and direct wide band gap, in spite of their high density of threading dislocations. Build-in internal field-induced quantum-confined Stark effect in InGaN/GaN quantum well LED structures results in a spatial separation of electrons and holes, which leads to a reduction of radiative recombination rate. Therefore, many growth techniques have been developed by utilizing lateral over-growth mode or by inserting additional layers such as patterned layer and superlattices for reducing threading dislocations and internal fields. In this work, we investigated various characteristics of InGaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) LED structures grown on selectively wet-etched porous (SWEP) GaN template layer and compared with those grown on non-porous GaN template layer over c-plane sapphire substrates. From the surface morphology measured by atomic force microscope, high resolution X-ray diffraction analysis, low temperature photoluminescence (PL) and PL excitation measurements, good structural and optical properties were observed on both LED structures. However, InGaN MQWs LED structures grown on SWEP GaN template layer show relatively low In composition, thin well width, and blue shift of PL spectra on MQW emission. These results were explained by rough surface of template layer, reduction of residual compressive stress, and less piezoelectric field on MQWs by utilizing SWEP GaN template layer. Better electrical properties were also observed for InGaN MQWs on SWEP GaN template layer, specially at reverse operating condition for I-V measurements.
