Preparation and Characterization of Porous CeO2 Using Ionic Liquids (이온성액체를 이용한 다공성 산화세륨 합성)

  • Synthesis of porous $CeO_2$ particles was investigated using various ionic liquids (ILs) as an effective template. The pore structure and crystalline phase of $CeO_2$ particles was affected significantly by the composition of ionic liquids. The strength of the hydrogen bonds on the anion part of ionic liquid was an essential factor to form the pore architecture of $CeO_2$ particles. Moreover, the length of alkyl group on the cation part of ionic liquid determined the pore size and surface area of $CeO_2$ particles. Among the ionic liquids, it was found that 1-Buthyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([Bmim][PF6]) was the most effective ionic liquid to synthesize the porous $CeO_2$ particle.

Effect of Co-catalyst CeO2 on NOx Reduction in PtNi/W-TiO2 Catalysts for Low-temperature H2-SCR (저온 H2-SCR용 PtNi/W-TiO2 촉매에 조촉매 CeO2가 NOx 저감에 미치는 영향)

  • In order to increase the usability of H2-SCR, the NOx removal characteristics with catalyst powder of PtNi/CeO2-W-TiO2 using Ce as a co-catalyst was synthesized and coated on a porous metal structure (PMS) were evaluated. Catalyst powder of PtNi/CeO2-W-TiO2(PtNi nanoparticles onto W-TiO2, with the incorporation of ceria (CeO2) as a co-catalysts) was synthesized and coated onto a porous metal structure (PMS) to produce a Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst. H2-SCR with CeO2 as a co-catalyst exhibited higher NOx removal efficiency compared to H2-SCR without CeO2. Particularly, at a 10wt% CeO2 loading ratio, the NOx removal efficiency was highest at 90℃. As the amount of catalyst coating on PMS increased, the NOx removal efficiency was improved below 90℃, but it was decreased above 120℃. When the space velocity was changed from 4,000 h-1 to 20,000 h-1, the NOx removal efficiency improved at temperatures above 120℃. It was expected that the use of the catalyst could be reduced by applying the PMS with excellent specific surface area as a support.

Influences of heating processes on properties and microstructure of porous CeO2 beads as a surrogate for nuclear fuels fabricated by a microfluidic sol-gel process

  • The control of microstructure is critical for the porous fuel particles used for infiltrating actinide nuclides. This study concerns the effect of heating processes on properties and microstructure of the fuel particles. The uniform gel precursor beads were synthesized by a microfluidic sol-gel process and then the porous $CeO_2$ microspheres, as a surrogate for the ceramic nuclear fuel particles, were obtained by heating treatment of the gel precursors. The fabricated $CeO_2$ microspheres have a narrow size distribution and good sphericity due to the feature of microfluidics. The effects of heating processes parameters, such as heating mode and peak temperatures on the properties of microspheres were studied in detail. An optimized heating mode and the peak temperature of $650^{\circ}C$ were selected to produce porous $CeO_2$ microspheres. The optimized heating mode can avoid the appearance of broken or crack microspheres in the heating process, and as-prepared porous microspheres were of suitable pore size distribution and pore volume for loading minor actinide (MA) solution by an infiltration method that is used for fabrication of MA-bearing nuclear fuel beads. After the infiltration process, $1000^{\circ}C$ was selected as the final temperature to improve the compressive strength of microspheres.

Capsule Free Hot Isostatic Pressing of Ceria-Doped Tetragonal Zirconia Powder Crystallized in Supercritical Methanol

  • Capsule free hot isostatic pressing (HIPing) of 12 mol% $CeO_2-88 mo% ZrO_2 (12CeO_2-88ZrO_2)$ powder was conducted at 1100~$1200^{\circ}C$ using the powder crystallized in supercritical methanol followed by supercritical drying. Porous $12CeO_2-88ZrO_2$ ceramics with ~35% open porosity, micropore diameter of ~23 nm and a narrow pore size distribution were fabricated by capsule free hot isostatic pressing at $1100^{\circ}C$. The porosity increased with decrease in HIPing temperature and was accompanied by a steady decrease in fracture strength.

  • For theinvestigation of MgO addition effect on 12Ce-TZP ceramics, MgO-CeO2-ZrO2 ceramics was fabricated using commercial powders under sintering condition of 130$0^{\circ}C$-1$600^{\circ}C$ for 2hr. Fully tetragonal phase could be obtained by proper heat treatment and MgO addition amount. Minor cubic phase was appeared in relatively high MgO content composition at each sintering temperature. As alloying amount of MgO increased, tetragonal stability increased and grain size decreased. Grain size dependence on MgO content was verified by SEM observation of fractured surface. Surface bloating was observed from the 2 m/o to 6m/o in the temperature range of 150$0^{\circ}C$ to 1$600^{\circ}C$. In spite of very porous microstructure owing to surface bloating, 100% TZP could be maintained in 2.0m/o MgO composition by heat treatment of 150$0^{\circ}C$. This result indicated that MgO was more powerful stabilizer than CeO2. Mechanical proprties of MgO-CeO2-ZrO2 ceramics were consistent with the stability observation of tetragonal phase very well.

  • Porous ceramic membranes consisting of $Ce_{1-x}Y_xO_{2-{\delta}}$ were developed for hydrogen permeation tests. Various amounts (x = 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2) of yttrium were doped to ceria to study the effect of yttrium doping on ceria membranes on various properties, including hydrogen permeability. $Ce_{1-x}Y_xO_{2-{\delta}}$ powder was synthesized by the sol-gel method. These membranes were fabricated by pressing and sintering at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 6 h. As the amount of yttrium increased, the grain size of the membrane decreased. Hydrogen permeability was improved as the yttrium content increased. Selective permeability of hydrogen compared to CO is explained by electric conductivity. As the temperature rose, both the hydrogen perm-selectivity and electric conductivity on $Ce_{0.8}Y_{0.2}O_{1.9}$ improved.

Fabrication of $TiO_2-CeO_2$ Composite Membranes with Thermal Stability

  • Ceramic membranes of the supported $TiO_2-CeO_2$ were prepared by dip-coating method on an $\alpha-Al_2O_3$ porous substrate. The mean pore diameter of an alumina support was 0.125 um. The mean particle diameter of $TiO_2-CeO_2$ top layer varied with firing temperature and ranged from 20 to 85 nm. The thermal stability of the composite membranes was studied from their surface microstructure after calcination at $600-900^{\circ}C$. The supported $TiO_2-CeO_2$ composite membranes exhibited much higher heat resistance than the $TiO_2$ membrane.

Hydrogen Production with High Temperature Solar Heat Thermochemical Cycle using CeO2/ZrO2 Foam Device (CeO2/ZrO2 Foam Device를 이용한 고온 태양열 열화학 싸이클의 수소 생산)

  • Two-step water splitting thermochemical cycle with $CeO_2$ foam device was investigated by using a solar simulator composed of 2.5 kW Xe-Arc lamp and mirror reflector. The hydrogen production of $CeO_2$ foam device depending on reaction temperature of Thermal-Reduction step and Water-Decomposition step was analyzed, and the hydrogen production of $CeO_2$ and $NiFe_2O_4/ZrO_2$ foam devices was compared. As a result, the amount of reduced $CeO_2$ considerably varies according to the reaction temperature of Thermal-Reduction step. and hydrogen production was not much when the amount of reduced $CeO_2$ decreased even if the reaction temperature of Water-Decomposition step was high. Therefore, it is very important to keep the reaction temperature of Thermal-Reduction step high in two-step thermochemical cycle with $CeO_2$.

  • 금속산화물을 이용한 2단계 산화/환원 반응은 GTL, CTL 의 반응원료인 합성가스 및 수소 생산기술이다. 이 기술은 메탄을 환원제로 사용함으로써 비교적 저온에서 산화/환원 반응을 할 수 있는 장점이 있다. 하지만 반복 사이클의 시연에서 금속산화물의 소결현상으로 인한 활성저하가 이 기술의 문제점 중의 하나이다. 본 연구에서는 2.5 kW Xenon arc lamp 가 설치된 solar simulator를 사용 하였으며, 무기물 다공성 폼 (SiC foam)및 유기물 다공성 폼 (Ni, Cufoam)에 $CeO_2/ZrO_2$ 를 코팅하여 연속적인 합성가스 및 수소 생산 가능성을 알아보았다. 반응 전 후의 $CeO_2/ZrO_2$ 의 결정 구조를 SEM 과 XRD 를 통해 분석하였다.

Preparation and Characteristics of $Al_2O_3/TZP$ Composites Using Liquid Infiltration Technique (액상침투법을 이용한 $Al_2O_3/TZP$ 복합체의 제조 및 특성)

  • Two kinds of $Al_2O_3/TZP$ composites were prepared using the liquid infiltration of 3Y-TZP and 12Ce-TZP precursors into hte sintered porous $Al_2O_3$. Small TZP additions(~11.0wt%) had increased the strength(19~59%) and fracture toughness(14~157%) of the sintered Al2O3 material($1600^{\circ}C$, 2h). The addition of 3Y-TZP was effective on case of the strength. By the way, in case of the fracture toughness that of 12Ce-TZP was effective. Infiltrated TZP was concentrated on the surface where its grain growth was enhanced and $Al_2O_3$ grain growth was effectively inhibit-ed, when compared to the inner region of the composite. The indentation crack was propagated through both intergranular modes and transgranular and the proportion if intergranular fracture was the larger in $Al_2O_3/12Ce-TZP$.
