PURPOSES : This study is to construct the regression models of drainage asphalt concrete specimens and to provide the appropriate coefficients of hydraulic conductivity prediction models. METHODS: In terms of easy calculation of the hydraulic conductivity from porosity of asphalt concrete pavement, the estimation model of hydraulic conductivity was proposed using regression analysis. 10 specimens of drainage asphalt concrete pavement were made for measurement of the hydraulic conductivity. Hydraulic conductivity model proposed in this study was calculated by empirical model based on porosity and the grain size. In this study, it shows the compared results from permeability measured test and empirical equation, and the suitability of proposed model, using regression analysis. RESULTS: As the result of the regression analysis, the hydraulic conductivity calculated from the proposal model was similar to that resulted from permeability measured test. Also result of RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) analysis, a proposed regression model is resulted in more accurate model. CONCLUSIONS: The proposed model can be used in case of estimating the hydraulic conductivity at drainage asphalt concrete pavements in fields.
The electrical conductivity of a soil-water system is related to its engineering properties. By measuring the soil electrical conductivity, one may obtain quantitative, semi-quantitative, or qualitative information to estimate the in-situ soil behavior for site characterization. This paper presents the results of electrical conductivity measured on compacted kaolin clay samples using a circular two-electrode cell in conjunction with a specially designed compaction apparatus, which has the advantage of reducing errors due to sample handling and increasing measurement accuracy. The experimental results are analyzed to observe the effects of various parameters on soil electrical conductivity, i.e. porosity, unit weight, water content and pore water salinity. The performance of existing analytical models for predicting the electrical conductivity of saturated and unsaturated soils is evaluated by calculating empirical constants in these models. It is found that the Rhoades model gives the best fit for the kaolin clay investigated. Two general relationships between the formation factor and soil porosity are established based on the experimental data reported in the literature and measured from this study for saturated soils, which may provide insight for understanding electrical conduction characteristics of soils over a wide range of porosity.
Some researchers pointed out that the nonlocal cantilever models do not predict the dynamic softening behavior for nanostructures (including nanobeams) with clamped-free (CF) ends. In contrast, some indicate that the nonlocal cantilever models can capture the stiffness softening characteristics. There are substantial differences on this issue between them. The vibration analysis of porosity-dependent functionally graded nanoscale tubes with variable boundary conditions is investigated in this study. Using a modified power-law model, the tube's porosity-dependent material coefficients are graded in the radial direction. The theory of nonlocal strain gradients is used. Hamilton's principle is used to derive the size-dependent governing equations for simply-supported (S), clamped (C) and clamped-simply supported (CS). Following the solution of these equations by the extended differential quadrature technique, the effect of various factors on vibration issues was investigated further. It can be shown that these factors have a considerable effect on the vibration characteristics. It also can be found that our numerical results can capture the unexpected softening phenomena for cantilever tubes.

As a primary step in studying the effects of the netting porosity on the net-shape in the four-seam trawling net, a series of experiments were performed changing the porosity of each panel, with the simplified mo:iel of the bag net made of porous vinyl film and that ma:ie of net webbing. These models were suspended horizontally in circularly flowing water, with two pairs of susp~nding threais to four points of symetry at the border of the bag mouth in place of both wing nets. And then, the section shape of the bag mouth photographed and the tensions on both pairs of suspending threads were measured with two load cells in circularly flowing water. From the results, the auther estimated an experimental equation from the relationship between the porosity of each panel in the bag net and the section shape of the bag mouth, h/w=k (l-Pr_u/lPr_s)

This paper concerns with forced dynamic response of thick functionally graded (FG) beam resting on viscoelastic foundation including porosity impacts. The dynamic point load is proposed to be triangle point loads in time domain. In current analysis the beam is assumed to be thick, therefore, the two-dimensional plane stress constitutive equation is proposed to govern the stress-strain relationship through the thickness. The porosity and void included in constituent is described by three different distribution models through the beam thickness. The governing equations are obtained by using Lagrange's equations and solved by finite element method. In frame of finite element analysis, twelve-node 2D plane element is exploited to discretize the space domain of beam. In the solution of the dynamic problem, Newmark average acceleration method is used. In the numerical results, effects of porosity coefficient, porosity distribution and foundation parameters on the dynamic responses of functionally graded viscoelastic beam are presented and discussed. The current model is efficient in many applications used porous FGM, such as aerospace, nuclear, power plane sheller, and marine structures.

The effect of porosity on the crack propagation is studied by using the cohesive zone model. Standard mode I fracture test were done by using compact tension specimens with various porosities. Load-load line displacement curves and ${\delta}_5$-crack resistance curves for various porosities were obtained from experiments. The cohesive zone model proposed by Xu and Needleman was employed to describe the crack propagation in porous media, and the Gurson model is used for constitutive relation of porous materials. These models were implemented into user subroutines of a finite element program ABAQUS. The fracture mode changes from ductile fracture to brittle fracture as the porosity increases. Numerical calculations agree well with experimental results.

Experimental studies of the cylindrical sintered-copper wick heat pipes were carried out to investigate the capillary heat transfer characteristics. Six models of the sintered-copper wick heat pipes were manufactured and tested to evaluate the heat transport limitations and the thermal characteristics. Also the performance of the heat pipes was analyzed theoretically and compared with the test results. The heat pipe models are divided into two sintered-wick groups and the nominal particle sizes are $180{\mu}m$(wick #1) and $200{\mu}m$(wick #2) respectively The experimental results showed that, the porosity of wick #1 was higher than that of wick #2, and also the wick #1 was generally superior than the wick #2 for the heat transport capability. The maximum heat transport rates were increased as the wick thicknesses and the vapor temperatures were increased.
This paper presents a comprehensive laboratory study that examines the effects of porosity, water content, density and grain size distribution on the thermal conductivity of soils which were sampled from 16 synoptic stations of Korea. The experimental results clearly demonstrate that porosity and water content are important parameters which strongly affect the thermal conductivity of soils. Soils with lower porosities and higher water contents have higher thermal conductivities. On the contrary, increase of the matrix density slightly increases the thermal conductivity, and grain size distribution hardly affects the thermal conductivity. Dry soils with the same porosity tend to have more scattered values of thermal conductivity than wet soils. Based on the experimental results, a multiple linear regression model and a nonlinear regression model, having two regression variables of porosity and water content, were presented to predict thermal conductivity. Both models show a high accuracy of prediction with $R^2$ values of 0.74 and 0.82, respectively. Thus, it is expected that the suggested empirical models can be used for predicting thermal conductivity of soils by measuring porosity and water content.
The resistance to air flow through fruits and vegetables in bulk was an important consideration in the design of the pressure cooling system. The amount of resistance to air flow through produce in bulk normally depended upon air flow rate, stacking depth, porosity, stacking patterns and shape and site of product. But, there was not enough information relating the effects of those factors on air flow resistance. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effect of stacking depth, stacking patterns, porosity and airflow rate on airflow resistance and to develop a statistical model to predict static pressure drop across the produce bed as a function of air flow rate, stacking depth, bed porosity, and product size. Mandarins and tomatoes were used in the experiment. The airflow rate were in the range of 0.1~1.0 ㎥/s.$m^2$, the porosity were in the range of 0.25~0.45, the depth were in the range of 0.3~0.9m and the equivalent diameters were 5.3cm and 6.3cm for mandarins, and 6.5cm and 8.5cm for tomatoes. Three methods of stacking arrangement were used i.e. cubic, square staggered, and staggered stacking arrangement. The results were summarized as follows. 1. The pressure drops across produce bed increased in proportion to stacking depth and superficial air velocity and decreased in proportion to porosity. 2. The increasing rates of pressure drop according to stacking patterns with the increase of superficial air velocity were different one another. The staggered stacking arrangement produced the highest increasing rate and the cubic stacking arrangement produced the lowest increasing rate. But it could be assumed that the stacking patterns had not influenced greatly on pressure drops if it was of equal porosity. 3. The statistical models to predict the pressure drop across produce bed as a function of superficial air velocity, stacking depth, porosity, and product diameter were developed from these experiments.

In this work, the free vibration analysis of functionally graded material (FGM) sandwich plates with porosity is conducted using the p-version of the finite element method (FEM), which is based on the first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT). The sandwich plate consists of two face-sheet layers of FGM and a homogeneous core layer. The obtained results are validated using convergence and comparison studies with previously published results. Five porosities distribution models of FGM sandwich plates are assumed and analyzed. The effect of the thickness ratio, boundary conditions, volume fraction exponents, and porosity coefficients of the top and bottom layers of FGM sandwich plates on the natural frequency are addressed.
