In this study, statistical analysis was performed to suggest the optimal analysis techniques for the main measuring instruments of the fill dam, such as seepage, crest settlement, and porewater pressure gauge. In addition, correlation analysis with water level and rainfall data was performed. Based on the results of descriptive statistical analysis for each instrument, porewater pressure gauges could be classified into 3 groups or 2 groups through principal component analysis, In the case of the group having a high correlation with the water level instrument, the correlation between the gauges was also large. In the case of seepage instrument, the distribution showed an extremely asymmetric distribution, so for quantitative analysis, the average seepage during non-precipitation and precipitation could be estimated through decision tree analysis. In the case of the crest settlement instrument, the correlation analysis showed that the correlation between the gauges was large, but the relationship with the water level instrument did not show a significant linear relationship, so EMD analysis was performed to analyze it in more detail. It is judged that principal component analysis, decision tree analysis, and data filtering method can be applied to analyze the behavior of pore water pressure meters, seepage, and crest settlement instrument as major measurement items of fill dam.
In the case of domestic seismic design, deformation of structures and ground is reviewed through undrained condition analysis and applied to design and maintenance. However, when the ground undergoes dissipation after liquefaction due to a dynamic load such as an earthquake, additional displacement occurs and greater damage occurs. Therefore, it is necessary to additionally analyze the drained conditions, It is necessary to grasp the exact ground behavior such as calculating and reviewing the amount of subsidence of the ground that has undergone the loss process after an earthquake and apply it to design and maintenance together. Therefore, in this study, numerical analysis was performed assuming undrained and drained conditions by dividing pure sandy soil into loose soil with Dr=30% and high-density soil with Dr=70%. In particular, when a dynamic load such as an earthquake is applied, considering the drained conditions of the ground, the settlement amount and the pore water pressure ratio of loose and dense ground are compared, This study focused on comparative analysis of settlement amount and pore water pressure ratio in the process of ground loss after an earthquake. As a result, the amount of subsidence during the dissipation process was 30 to 60 times greater than that of the earthquake.
FEM analyses which are based on modified Cam-clay theory have been generally used in such cases as analyses of stability and displacement fur embankment construction on soft clays. However, the Modified Cam Clay Model can generate some problems in anisotropic stress conditions of field because the critical state theory has been developed through many laboratory tests in isotropic conditions. Thus, the applicability on the prediction of undrained shear strength and pore water pressure which was based on the critical state theory was evaluated by triaxial tests and numerical analyses in isotropic and anisotropic conditions. Used samples often come out in domestic area, together with general low plastic clays which are showing dilatant behavior in shearing process. They were evaluated by laboratory tests and FEM based on MCCM. From the results of test and numerical analysis, the predictions of undrained strength in low plastic clays well coincided with each other in both isotropic and anisotropic conditions. However, the generation of porewater pressure was often overestimated during undrained shearing in anisotropic conditions. The results can generate the errors in the prediction of stress path of field sites during loading such as construction of embankment on soft clays because the field is subjected to anisotropic conditions during loading.

The composition of carbonate sands from a sabkha at Ruwais in the UAE differs from that of silica sand, and these sands are crushed easily under low compression pressures. Accordingly, particle crushing of carbonate sand occurs under high pressure, which results in additional settlement and reduces the shear strength. In this study, consolidation and triaxial tests were conducted to analyze the characteristics of carbonate sands following particle crushing. The unusual shear strength graphs of the carbonate sands result from the degree of particle pre-crushing. For the range at p' > p in the p (p')-q diagram, negative (-) excess porewater pressures occur if the axial pressure causes particle crushing that induces exposure of the inner voids. In addition, the q value decreased after particle crushing. In conclusion, the unusual characteristics of the carbonate sands were induced by particle crushing. The triaxial tests revealed that the degree of particle pre-crushing influenced the excess porewater pressure.

This study examined a case of collapse and reinforcement of the colluvial deposit slope in Kyeongnam Geoje Area. The reason for the collapse was found first in the reduction of the resistant force due to slope-cut for constructing retaining walls. This decreased the resistant force against sliding, which enabled precipitation during the rainy period to seep into the ground in the upper colluvium, resulting in increase in porewater pressure. This leads to decreased shear strength and increased sliding force, which ultimately caused the collapse of the slope. For the long-term stability, methods attained for stability reinforcement are summarized in the following table.
In general, the conceptual lumped-parameter groundwater flow model to predict the groundwater fluctuations in hillside slopes has unknown model parameters to be estimated from the known input -output data. The purpose of this study is to estimate the optimal model parameters of the groundwater flow model developed by authors. The Mazilnum A Posteriori( MAP) estimation method is utilized for this purpose and it is applied to a site which shows the typical landslide in Korea. The result of application shows tllat the 반AP estimation method can estimate the unknown parameters properly well. The groundwater model developed along with estimation technique applied in this paper will be used for assessing risk of landslides.

The physical models are useful to understand the soil behaviour. Hence, these tools allow validating analytical theories and numerical data. This paper addresses the design, construction and implementation of a physical model able to simulate the soil liquefaction under different cyclic actions. The model was instrumented with a piezoelectric actuator and a set of transducers to measure the porewater pressures, displacements and accelerations of the system. The soil liquefaction was assessed in three different grain size particles of a natural sand by applying a sinusoidal signal, which incorporated three amplitudes and the fundamental frequencies of three different earthquakes occurred in Colombia. In addition, such frequencies were scaled in a micro shaking table device for 1, 50 and 80 g. Tests allowed identifying the liquefaction susceptibility at various frequency and displacement amplitude combinations. Experimental evidence validated that the liquefaction susceptibility is higher in the fine-grained sands than coarse-grained sands, and showed that the acceleration of the actuator controls the phenomena trigging in the model instead of the displacement amplitude.
To investigate the liquefaction potential of sands, a series of untrained cyclic triaxial compression tests is carried out on the samples of Ottawa, Joomoonjin, Hn river and Hongseung sands. The constitutive equations of sands are derived to explain the mechanical behavior of sands under cyclic stresses, and are applicable to liquefaction analysis. The following results are obtainded in this study. 1. Sands with the lower confining pressure or relative density are to be easily liquefied, and when the amplitude of cyclic stress are large, liquefaction takes places over only a few cycles. 2. Stress ratio, porewater pressure ratio and cyclic shear strains are to be good criteria to evaluate liquefaction potential of sands. 3. Hongseung sands which contains some silty clay shows higher dynamic properties than other sands. 4. The dynamic behaviors of undisturbed Hongseung sand are about same as those of dense sands. It is noted that undisturbed Hongseung sand shows higher liquefaction potential than the samples made by pluviation under same relative density, 5. The constitutive equations of soils under cyclic loads are developed based on the theory of elasto-plasticity, logarithmic stress-strain rela'tionship, non-associated flow rule and the concept of the boundary surface. The derived equations is applicable to predict the behavior of sands under cyclic loads and liquefaction potential with a higher accuracy. 6. Based on results of the study it may be concluded that cracks of the foundations and dislocation of the structures at Hongseung earthquakes(Oct. 7, 1978, Richter scald 5.2) are not brought by the liquefaction process.

During an earthquake, there are three main components of excitation : horizontal excitation of the ground, vertical excitation of the pile due to superstructure feedback produced by vertical excitation of the ground, and the seawater excitation induced by the vertical ground shaking, that is, "the seaquake." These excitations could have effects on the soil plugs in open-ended pie piles installed at offshore sites. In this study, seaquake excitation induced by the vertical ground shaking was simulated by pulsing the water pressure at the seabed. During a seaquake, due to the induced excess porewater pressure and pressure gradients in the soil, the capacity of open-ended pipe piles installed in a simulated sea depth of greate than 220 m was reduced serevely and the soil plugging resistance was degraded by more than 80% The soil plug was failed because of eh upward seepage forces that developed in the soil plug due to excess pore water pressure produced in the bottom of the soil plug during the seaquake, The compressive capacity of ar open-ended pile in a simulated sea depth of less than 220 m was reduced only by about 10% and the soil plug resistance was degraded by less than 5%.s than 5%.
It has been well known that the rainfall-triggered rise of groundwater levels is one of the most important factors resulting the instability of the hillside slopes. Thus, the prediction of porewater pressure is an essential step in the evaluation of landslide hazard. This study involves the development and verification of numerical groundwater flow model for the prediction of groundwater flow fluctuations accounting for both of unsatu나toed flow and saturated flow on steep hillside slopes. The first part of this study is to develop a nomerical groundwater flow model. The numerical technique chosen for this study is the finitro element method in combination with the finite difference method. The finite element method is used to transform the space derivatives and the finite difference method is used to discretize the time domain. The second part of this study is to estimate the unknown model parameters used in the proposed numerical model. There were three parameters to be estimated from input -output record $K_e$, $\psi_e$, b. The Maximum -A-Posteriori(MAP) optimization method is utilized for this purpose, . The developed model is applied to a site in Korea where two debris avalanches of large scale and many landslides of small scale were occurred. The results of example analysis show that the numerical groundwater flow model has a capacity of predicting the fluctuation of groundwater levels due to rainfall reasonably well.
