  • An anodic electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique is used to create a uniform TiO2 thin film coating on boiling thin steel plates (1.1 mm by 90 mm). All of the effective parameters except time of the EPD method are kept constant. To investigate the effect of gamma irradiation on the critical heat flux (CHF), the test specimens were irradiated in a gamma cell to different doses ranging from 100 to 300 kGy, and then SEM and BET analysis were performed. For each coated specimen, the contact angle and capillary length were measured. The specimens were then tested in a boiling pool for CHF and boiling heat transfer coefficient. It was observed that irradiation significantly decreases the maximum pore diameter while it increases the porosity, pore surface area and pore volume. These surface modifications due to gamma irradiation increased the CHF of the nano-coated surfaces compared to that of the unirradiated surfaces. The heat transfer coefficient (HTC) of the nano-coated surfaces irradiated at 300 kGy increased from 83 to 160 kW/(㎡ K) at 885 kW/㎡ wall heat flux by 100%. The CHF of the irradiated (300 kGy) and unirradiated surfaces are 2035 kW/㎡ and 1583 kW/㎡, respectively, an increase of nearly 31%.

  • A boiling heat transfer system is used in a variety of industrial processes and applications, such as refrigeration, power generation, heat exchangers, cooling of high-power electronics components, and cooling of nuclear reactors. The critical heat flux (CHF) is the thermal limit during a boiling heat transfer phase change; at the CHF point, the heat transfer is maximized, followed by a drastic degradation beyond the CHF point. Therefore, Enhancement of CHF is essential for economy and safety of heat transfer system. In this study, the CHF and heat transfer coefficient under the pool-boiling state were tested using multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) CM-95 and CM-100. These two types of multi-wall carbon nanotubes have different sizes but the same thermal conductivity. The results showed that the highest CHF increased for both MWCNTs CM-95 and CM-100 at the volume fraction of 0.001%, and that the CHF-increase ratio for MWCNT CM-100 nanofluid with long particles was higher than that for MWCNT CM-95 nanofluid with short particles. Also, at the volume fraction of 0.001%, the MWCNT CM-100 nanofluid indicated a 5.5% higher CHF-increase ratio as well as an approximately 23.87% higher heat-transfer coefficient increase ratio compared with the MWCNT CM-95 nanofluid.

  • A deep understanding of the characteristics and mechanism of geyser boiling and capillary pumping is necessary to optimize a high-temperature sodium heat pipe. In this work, the Volume of Fluid (VOF) two-phase model and the capillary force model in the mesh wick were used to model the complex phase change and fluid flow in the heat pipe. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations successfully predicted the process of bubble nucleation, growth, aggregation, and detachment from the wall in the liquid pool of the evaporation section of the heat pipe in horizontal and tilted states, as well as the reflux phenomenon of capillary suction within the wick. The accuracy and stability of the capillary force model within the wick were verified. In addition, the causes of geyser boiling in heat pipes were analyzed by extracting the oscillation distribution of heat pipe wall temperature. The results show that adding the capillary force model within the wick structure can reasonably simulate the liquid backflow phenomenon at the condensation; Under the horizontal and inclined operating conditions of the heat pipe, the phenomenon of local dry-out will occur, resulting in a sharp increase in local temperature. The speed of bubble detachment and the timely reflux of liquid sodium (condensate) replenishment in the wick play a vital role in the geyser temperature oscillation of the tube wall. The numerical simulation method and the results of this study are anticipated to provide a good reference for the investigation of geyser boiling in high-temperature heat pipes.

  • Turbulent jet discharges in subcooled water pools are essential for safety systems in nuclear power plants, specifically in the pressure suppression pool of boiling water reactors and In-containment Refueling Water Storage Tank of advanced pressurized water reactors. The gas and liquid flow in these systems is investigated using multiphase flow analysis. This field has been extensively examined using a combination of experiments, theoretical models, and Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations. ANSYS CFX offers two approaches to model multiphase flow behavior. The non-homogeneous Eulerian-Eulerian Model has been used in this work; it computes global information and is more convenient to study interpenetrated fluids. This study utilized the Large Eddy Simulation Model as the turbulence model, as it is better suited for non-stationary and buoyant flows. The CFD results of this study were validated with experimental data and theoretical results previously obtained. The figures of merit dimensionless penetration length and the dimensionless buoyancy length show good agreement with the experimental measurements. Correlations for these variables were obtained as a function of dimensionless numbers to give generality using only initial boundary conditions. CFD numerical model developed in this research has the capability to simulate the behavior of non-condensable gases discharged in water.

  • Following the Fukushima accident and its extended station blackout, attention was brought to the importance of the spent fuel pools' (SFPs) behavior in case of a prolonged loss of the cooling system. Since then, many analytical works have been performed to estimate the timing of hypothetical fuel uncovery for various SFP types. Experimentally, however, little was done to investigate issues related to the formation of a flammable gas mixture, distribution, and stratification in the SFP building itself and to some extent assess the capability for the code to correctly predict it. This paper presents the main outcomes of the Experiments on Spent Fuel Pool (ESFP) project carried out under the auspices of Swissnuclear (Framework 2012-2013) in the PANDA facility at the Paul Scherrer Institut in Switzerland. It consists of an experimental investigation focused on hydrogen concentration build-up into a SFP building during a predefined scaled scenario for different venting positions. Tests follow a two-phase scenario. Initially steam is released to mimic the boiling of the pool followed by a helium/steam mixture release to simulate the deterioration of the oxidizing spent fuel. Results shows that while the SFP building would mainly be inerted by the presence of a high concentration of steam, the volume located below the level of the pool in adjacent rooms would maintain a high air content. The interface of the two-gas mixture presents the highest risk of flammability. Additionally, it was observed that the gas mixture could become stagnant leading locally to high hydrogen concentration while steam condenses. Overall, the experiments provide relevant information for the potentially hazardous gas distribution formed in the SFP building and hints on accident management and on eventual retrofitting measures to be implemented in the SFP building.

  • A comparative transient analyses were performed for oxide and nitride cores or a large (3000 MWt), pool-type, liquid-metal-cooled reactor (LMR). The study was focused on three representative accident initiators with failure to scram : the unprotected loss-of-flow (ULOF), the unprotected transient overpower (UTOP), and the unprotected fast transient overpower (UFTOP). The margins to fuel melting and sodium boiling have been evaluated for these representative transients. The results show that there is an increase in safety margin with nitride core which maintains the physical dimensions of the oxide core.
