In this study, emulsion type hydrophobic admixture was prepared by mixing polyvinyl alcohol surfactant, polymethyl hydro-siloxane and meta kaolin, and the compressive strength and mechanical properties such as permeability and contact angle test of the mortar were evaluated. The developed hydrophobic admixture showed no decrease in strength and the mortar specimen with magnesium oxide developed the early strength. In the case of permeability, total seepage was significantly decreased when the hydrophobic admixture was directly mixed with the mortar, but the effect of meta kaolin contained in hydrophobic admixture was not significant. The surface of specimens coated with hydrophobic admixture shows that the contact angle on the surface was highly increased compared with reference mortar specimen. Further researches to obtain the optimum mix proportion of the PVA fiber, nano-silica and meta kaolin for producing the super-hydrophobic surface are required.

The goals of this study are to develop a sprayable strain-hardening cement composite (SHCC) and to investigate the potential of the sprayable SHCC for packing the joint between existing R/C building and seismic retrofit elements. This paper provides the procedure for the development of a sprayable SHCC, test results of fresh properties required to a sprayable SHCC, and mock-up test results of developed sprayable SHCC. Control mixture of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber-reinforced SHCC (PVA-SHCC) was predetermined based on available research results. The pumpability and sprayability of the SHCC mixture were depended on the fluid property of fresh SHCC mixture. In this study, the effects of admixtures such as AE agent and fly ash on the rheological and rebound properties of control SHCC mixture were investigated to determine a sprayable SHCC mixture. Flow values and air content during shotcreting procedure of sprayable SHCC were also evaluated. The results show that flow or flowability and amount of air of three SHCC mixtures decreased almost linearly according to shotcreting procedure from mixer to nozzle. And the pumpability and sprayability of mixture with AE agent and low amounts of fly ash were superior to the those of SHCC. Mock-up test result show that developed sprayable SHCC indicates much improved workability and shotcrete construction period than conventional method(nonshrinkage mortar).
This research investigates the effects of shrinkage reducing agent (SRA) on the mechanical behavior of strain-hardening cement composite (SHCC). SHCC material with specified compressive strength of 50 MPa was mixed and tested in this study. All SHCC mixes reinforced with volume fraction of 2.2% polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber and test variables are type and dosage of shrinkage reducing agents. The shrinkage reducing materials used in this study are phase change material as the thermal stress reducing materials that have the ability to absorb or release the heat. The effect of SRA was examined based on the change in length caused by shrinkage and hardened mechanical properties, specially compressive, tensile and flexural behaviors, of SHCC material. It was noted that SRA reduces change in length caused by shrinkage at early age. SRA can also improve the tensile and flexural strengths and toughness of SHCC material used in this study.

For developing the durable eco-concrete, water-repellent and hydrophobic emulsion were prepared by stirring and mixing polymethyl hydrosiloxane and polyvinyl alcohol. After adding the PMHS emulsion cement paste, the hydration reaction characteristics and the change in chemical composition were analyzed through BSE and EDS analysis, and the micropores were evaluated by MIP test. Cement mixed with PMHS emulsion was analyzed to increase the hydration reactivity and to decrease the capillary porosity, but it was found that the capillary porosity varies depending on the degree of dispersion of the emulsion in the cement paste. In the case of the emulsion containing metakaolin, there was little difference in hydration degree and porosity from the case of using only the PMHS emulsion. However, when the cement surface was coated with PMHS emulsion, the contact angle was found to increase significantly compared to OPC, and it was analyzed that especially when PVA fiber was used together, it changed to a hypohydrophobic surface.
In this study, the alternative to the energy-intensive conventional vacuum distillation process, an eco-friendly and energy-efficient pervaporation separation was employed in 1,2 hexane diol/water (HDO/water) mixture. The crosslinked PVA-glutaraldehyde was coated inside the alumina hollow fiber membrane (Al-HF). In the HDO/IPA pervaporation separation, optimization of the membrane concerning PVA/GA ratio, curing temperature, and pervaporation operating condition were performed. In the long-term stability test, the sustainable pervaporation separation performance giving flux in the range of 1.90~2.16 kg/m2h, and water content in permeate was higher than 99.5% (separation factor = 68) was obtained from the PVA/GA (molar ratio = 0.08, curing temperature = 80℃) coated Al-HF membrane from HDO/water (25/75, w/w, %) mixture at 40℃. Therefore, this work provides potential and inspiration for PVA-based membranes to mitigate excessive energy requirements in HDO/water separation by pervaporation.

SHCCs (Strain Hardening Cement Composites) show the high energy tolerance capacity due to the interfacial bonding of the fibers to the cement matrix. For effective material design and application of SHCCs, it is needed to investigate the compression, four-point bending, direct tensile response of SHCCs with different types of fibers and water-cement ratio. For these purposes, three kinds of fibers were used: PP(polypropylene, 2.0%), PVA(Polyvinyl alcohol, 2.0%), PE (Polyethylene, 1.0%). Also, effects of water-cement ratio(0.45, 0.60) on the SHCCs were evaluated in this paper. As the result of test, SHCCs with PVA and PE fiber were showed better overall behavior than specimens with PP fibers on bending and direct tensile test. Also, for the same type of fiber, SHCCs with water-cement ratio of 0.45 exhibited higher ultimate strength than specimen with water-cement ratio of 0.60 on compression strength, and showed the multiple cracking on bending and direct tensile test. Therefore, to improve of workability and dispersibility of SHCCs on water-cement ratio of 0.60, continual studies were needed.

This study analyzed the effect of mixing order on the flowability, compressive strength, and flexural strength of cement composites reinforced with polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) fibers and multi-walled carbon nanotubes(MWCNTs). The experimental results showed that the addition of CNTs significantly reduced the flowability, and the flowability was considerably affected by the mixing order when CNTs were added. The compressive strength was most effectively improved when water and CNTs solution were mixed first before adding PVA fibers, and the flexural strength was highest when water and CNTs solution were mixed with PVA fibers after dry mixing. However, there was no clear correlation between the flexural toughness and the mixing order. In addition, scanning electron microscopy(SEM) image analysis was conducted to analyze the microstructure. The SEM images showed that CNTs were randomly dispersed through the specimens and contributed to the strength improvement, but the effect of the mixing order was not clearly observed. The main results of this study are expected to be useful for evaluations of workability and material performance of PVA fiber-reinforced cement composites with CNTs.

While more attention has been paid in recent years to urban point source pollution control, no considerable measures have been taken to control urban non-point source pollution. Contaminants from non-point sources deposited on urban impermeable surfaces such as road and highway are easily released to the public waters by rainfall, leading to the deterioration in water quality in urban area. The present study investigated a system using filter media to reduce the level of contamination in urban road runoff. Three different media, designated as J-P (polypropylene, blowing type), B-P (polypropylene, fiber type), and P-F (Polyvinyl alcohol, cube and sheet type) were evaluated on the basis of pollutant removal efficiency as well as hydraulic property. Experiments were peformed using a 1/4-scale treatment unit at various pollutant roading and rainfall intensity with real rainwater runoff collected from road surfaces. The results at different rainfall intensities shows that the medium J-P is superior to the other media for water permeability. J-P was not blocked at 10 mm/hr rainfall and its permeability was stable. On the other hand, B-P and P-F resulted in substantial overflow ratio even at I mm/hr rainfall intensity. Comparing treatment efficiencies for suspended solids, all media showed similar removal ranged from 91 % to 95%. However, J-P seems to be better than the other media considering its higher water permeability. J-P and P-F, both hydrophobic, yielded over 76% of heavy metal removal. But, the hydrophilic media B-P showed much smaller removal ranging from 26% to 47%. This indicates that J-P and P-F are beneficial to remove heavy metal due to their hydrophobic property. The treatment efficiencies over PAHs (poly aromatic hydrocarbons) showed the similar removal efficiency ranging from 66% to 97% for all three media.
