Polystyrene Biodegradation Using Zophobas morio

  • The aim of this study was to investigate changes in the weight of Zophobas morio larvae and mass of polystyrene foam when the larvae were fed polystyrene for 27 days. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometry was used to determine whether the polystyrene was broken down by the larvae. Forty Z. morio larvae (four replicates with 10 larvae per replicate) were reared in a chamber under controlled conditions with polystyrene foam blocks as their sole diet. The weight of the Z. morio larvae and mass of the polystyrene foam decreased as a function of time. The average weight of the larvae and mass of the polystyrene foam blocks decreased by 16.3 and 6.5%, respectively, over the 27-day period. The FTIR spectrum of Z. morio larvae fed with polystyrene foam did not reveal the unique peaks associated with polystyrene. In conclusion, this study suggests the possibility of using Z. morio larvae as a management technology for degrading waste plastics without a negative environmental effect.   • In this paper, the cutting characteristics and cutting mechanism of polystyrene foam was experimentally investigated. It was found that polystyrene foam has different cutting characteristics and cutting mechanism comparing with that of normal metal materials. By using the experimental results, the optimal cutting tool was designed and examined for approving the cuttingability of polystyrene foam.

  • Polystyrene foam is easily melted and vapoured by heat, has a proper quality in the pattern manufacturing and has a low price. The objective of this study is to develop a rapid prototyping method fur polystyrene foam pattern manufacuring to use the eliminative pattern casting (EPC). Applying fur the rapid prototyping concept reversely, the unnecessary part of section is vapored away by heat source of laser beam. In order to examine the applicability between laser beam process and polystyrene foam material, the basic experiments such as hole, line, plane and contour process are carried out. With these results, various three-dimensional shape patterns are made and this rapid prototyping tool for polystyrene foam manufacturing.

  • Recently, the study on mix design of lightweight concrete using the polystyrene foam balls is put into practice from the viewpoint to grade up the quality of concrete and recyclable usage of industrial by products. Polystyrene aggregate concrete, PAC, can be used as structural concrete in low strength application. For instance, PAC could be used in the middle part of sandwich panel where stresses are generally low and in the case of grid-type reinforcement where it does not need high bond strength but little compressive strength to resist the pressure of transverse reinforcement. From this point of view, the authors discussed the influence of fluidity and compressive strength of concrete by the difference of the volume percentage of polystyrene foam balls and water cement ratio.

Processing of Polyurethane/polystyrene Hybrid Foam and Numerical Simulation

  • Polyurethane foams were produced by using a homogenizer as a mixing equipment. Effects of stirring speed on the foam structure were investigated with SEM observations. Variation of the bubble size, density of the foam, compressive strength, and thermal conductivity were studied. A hybrid foam consisting of polyurethane foam and commercial polystyrene foam is produced. Mechanical and thermal properties of the hybrid foam were compared with those of pure polyurethane foam. Advancement of flow front during mold filling was observed by using a digital camcorder. Four types of mold geometry were used for mold filling experiments. Flow during mold filling was analyzed by using a two-dimensional control volume finite element method. Variation of foam density with respect to time was experimentally measured. Creeping flow, uniform density, uniform conversion, and uniform temperature were assumed for the numerical simulation. It was assumed for the numerical analysis that the cavity has thin planar geometry and the viscosity is constant. The theoretical predictions were compared with the experimental results and showed good agreement.

  • In study, the lightweight insulation mortar is produced with more than 50,000tons of waste each year, but it is difficult to treat with the degradable composite material and the recycling ratio is still 50%. the lightweight insulation mortar is manufactured by using the ratio of expanded polystyrene and pulverized expanded polystyrene.

  • Rapid Prototyping (RP) techniques have their unique characteristics according to the working principles: stair-stepped surface of parts due to layer-by-layer stacking, low build speed caused by line-by-line solidification to build one layer, and additional post processing to improve surface roughness, so it is required very high cost to introduce and to maintain RP apparatus. The objective of this study is to develop and design a new RP process, Variable Lamination Manufacturing using expandable polystyrene foam sheet as part material (VLM-S), which can make up for the disadvantage of existing techniques, and to develop an apparatus to implement the process. In order to examine the possibility of practical utilization of the proposed VLM-S process for prototyping of a general three-dimensional shape, an auto-shift lever knob and a pyramid shape were fabricated.

가스검지관법에 의한 플라스틱재료의 연소가스 독성평가 (The Combustion Gases Toxicity Evaluation of Plastics Material by Colorimetric Gas Detector Tubes)

  • 본 연구는 플라스틱재료 중 비드발포폴리스티렌폼, 압출발포폴리스티렌폼, 연질폴리우레탄폼, 경질폴리우레탄폼, 경질PVC파이프, 비닐장판, 폴리에틸렌폰(비난연), 폴리에틸렌폼(난연)를 대상으로 연소가스 독성평가를 위하여 NES 713 방법에 따라 발생되는 연소가스를 가스텍(GASTEC) 가스검지관을 이용하여 조사하였다. 연구결과 플라스틱재료의 연소시 발생되는 연소가스에 인간이 30분 동안 노출될 경우 사망에 이르는 독성지수 1 이상을 갖고 있었으며, 각 실험체의 독성지수 결과는 4.3∼179.2로 나타났으며 경질 PVC파이프가 179.2로 가장 높았다.

Local buckling behaviour of steel plate elements supported by a plastic foam material

  • Sandwich panels comprising steel facings and a polystyrene foam core are increasingly used as roof and wall claddings in buildings in Australia. When they are subjected to loads causing bending and/or axial compression, the steel plate elements of their profiled facing are susceptible to local buckling. However, when compared to panels with no foam core, they demonstrate significantly improved local buckling behaviour because they are supported by foam. In order to quantify such improvements and to validate the use of available design buckling stress formulae, an investigation using finite element analyses and laboratory experiments was carried out on steel plates that are commonly used in Australia of varying yield stress and thickness supported by a polystyrene foam core. This paper presents the details of this investigation, the buckling results and their comparison with available design buckling formulae.

소실모형 주조시 알루미늄 합금 용탕의 수소 용해에 관한 연구 (Hydrogen Gas Pick-Up of Al-alloy Melt During Lost Foam Casting)

  • The hydrogen gas pick-up problem that can occur during Lost Foam Casting was investigated by reduced pressure test and practical Lost Foam Casting. The proper test pressure of reduced pressure test was determined by experiments not to use polystyrene and gas contents of the melt were calculated from density measurement results. The results showed that the hydrogen pick-up increased with the increased amount of polystyrene that was replaced by melt. The hydrogen pick-up was larger in the case of no degassed melt than that of degassed melt. So the hydrogen pick-up depended on the initial hydrogen content of the melt and the contact time of the melt with the decomposed gas phase. The mold evacuation decreased the hydrogen pick-up and increased the flow length of melt during Lost Foam Casting. And the error of calculated hydrogen pick-up was calculated by numerical method.
