  • Activated carbons (ACs) are widely used in adsorption for the removal of gaseous and aqueous pollutants[1]. Although a wide range of carbonaceous materials can be converted into ACs, the coal and lingocellulosic materials are the most commonly used starting materials for the production of commercial ACs. Recently, there are a quite large number of studies regarding the preparation of ACs from various polymeric materials because of high carbon yield and low ash content In this work, ACs are prepared from polystyrene (PS) by chemical activation with potassium hydroxide and the effect of the KOH-to-PS ratio to adsorption of ammonia is investigated.   • Step index POFs(SIPOF) are composed of core polymers and cladding polymers. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS) are normally used as core materials. The refractive index of cladding materials should be less than 2-5 % that of the core material. PMMA and fluorinated polymers are used as cladding materials on PS and PMMA core, respectively$^1$. Cladding materials which have lower refractive index than core materials reflect light at less than critical angle, which is transmitted down the core. (omitted)

  • Recently, metamaterials attracted much attention because of the potential applications for superlens, cloaking and high precision sensors. We developed several dielectric metamaterials for enhancing antireflection or light trapping capability in solar energy harvesting devices. Colloidal lithography and electrochemical anodization process were employed to fabricate self-assembed nano- and microscale dielectric metamaterials in a simple and cost-effective manner. We improved broadband light absorption in c-Si, a-Si, and organic semiconductor layer by employing polystyrene (PS) islands integrated Si conical-frustum arrays, resonant PS nanosphere arrays, and diffusive alumina nanowire arrays, respectively. We also demonstrated thin metal coated alumina nanowire array which is utilized as an efficient light-to-heat conversion layer of solar steam generating devices. The scalable design and adaptable fabrication route to our light management nanostructures will be promising in applications of solar energy harvesting system. On the other hands, broadband invisible cloaks, which continuously work while elastically deforming, are developed using smart metamaterials made of photonic and elastic crystals. A self-adjustable, nearly lossless, and broadband (10-12GHz) smart meatamaterials have great potentials for applications in antenna system and military stealth technology.

Ultrasonic degradation of polypropylene and its application for the development of PP based copolymer and nanocomposite

  • Thermoplastic nanocomposites based on the copolymers of polypropylene (PP)-polystyrene (PS) and organically modified montmorillonite (org-MMT) were produced by using power ultrasonic wave in an intensive mixer. Owing to the unique action of the ultrasonic wave, free radicals of styrene monomers and macroradicals of PP were generated, by which copolymers of PP and PS were formed. Another important aspect of using ultrasonic wave during the mixing process was to enhance nano-scale dispersion of org-MMT by destructing the agglomerates of org-MMT in the polymer matrix. Optimum conditions for the in-situ copolymerization and melt intercalation were studied with various concentrations of styrene monomer, sonication time and different kinds of clay. It was found that a novel attempt carried out in this study yielded further improvement in the mechanical performance of the nanocomposites compared to those produced by the conventional melt mixing process.

  • Stable polyaniline-dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (PANI-DBSA) fully dissolved in toluene was obtained by a direct one-step emulsion polymerization technique. The polymerization of aniline was carried out in an emulsion comprising water, toluene and DBSA acting both as a surfactant and a dopant for PANI. After the proper washing process was performed, the conductivities of obtained PANI-DBSA complexes increased with increase APS/Aniline molar ratio and DBSA/Aniline molar ratio. The UV-Vis absorption spectra and TGA thermograms of PANI-DBSA complexes also supported these results. PANI-DBSA/PS blends were prepared by mixing PANI-DBSA complexes with PS in toluene. These blends exhibited electrical conductivity of 0.371S/cm at a low PANI-DBSA content (7 wt.%)

  • Molecular motion at the surface of monodisperse polystyrene (PS) films with various chain end groups was studied by scanning probe microscopy. Surface glass transition temperature ($T_{g^s}$) of the PS films was much lower than the corresponding bulk value. And, the magnitude of $T_{g^s}$ was strongly dependent on chain end chemistry. This result can be explained in terms of the chain end concentration at the surface. Time-temperature superposition principle was applied to rheological analysis at the surface. The apparent activation energy of the surface ${\alpha}_{a}$-relaxation process was approximately a half of that for the bulk sample. This result clearly indicates that the cooperativity for the surface segmental motion was reduced in comparison with that in the bulk region.

A Novel Method for the Fabrication of Monodispersed Carbon Nanospheres and Their Crosslinked Forms

  • Monodispersed carbon nanospheres (CNSs) were fabricated by a novel method and their structural properties were investigated. CNSs were prepared by the pyrolysis of nanospherical polystyrenes (PS). With the coating of $SiO_2$ shell, PS particles were effectively separated during pyrolysis process which resulted to CNSs with an average diameter of 40 nm. Moreover, CNSs could be crosslinked with each other through the bondings between the functional groups on their surfaces. Morphology of the fabricated carbon spheres and their crosslinked form were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR).

  • A TACUB jig was applied to separate waste plastics [polystyrene (PS), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), and polyethylene terephthalate (PET)] used in copy machine. The effect of water pulsation including amplitude and frequency on the separation performance was investigated for the feeds containing two or three plastics. Good results are obtained under suitable conditions. Grades of 99.8% PS,99.3% ABS, and 98.6% PET are recovered as the products in the upper, middle and bottom layers respectively. Based on these results, a processing plant fer recycling of plastics from scrapped copy machines is now under construction.

  • CoCrPt alloy films are attracting wide attention for applications to high-density magnetic recording media and hard magnetic layer in spin valve structure due to their high coercivity and strong magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Diblock copolymer templates are one of the most promising candidates for nanoscale patterning otherwise inaccessible by lithographic procedures [1]. In this study, we have investigated magnetic properties of Co$\sub$68/Cr$\sub$18/Pt$\sub$14/ nanodot arrays made by self-assembling polystyrene-block-methyl methacrylate ((PS-b-PMMA), (Mn = 82.5 Kg/mol, with a 1.12 polydispersity)) diblock copolymer. Computational Fluid Dynamics Study on Particle Rejection in Microfiltration

  • Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was applied to modeling particle dynamics in microfiltration (MF). The rejection properties of poly methylmethacrylate (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS) were calculated. Calculated rejection (R) of PMMA was independent with the porosity of the membrane, and the R was constant in the range of volume flux between $1\times 1-^{-4}-1\times 10^{-2}$ m/s. These observations were in quantity agreement with our experimental observations. The dependence of PMMA and PS rejection on the ratio of particle diameter and pore diameter were good agreement with the experimental values, which suggesting that the validity of CFD simulation to evaluate rejection of particle in MF membranes. Change of rejection of PMMA as a function of time was molded based on the CFD result which explained well the experimental observation.
