  • After reviewing the principle of a new display utilizing bent-core liquid crystals, we summarize the advantages and problems of this display. Then we will introduce our effort to overcome these problems mostly by synthesizing new materials. We obtained a variety of newly synthesized compounds showing the $SmAP_R$ phase. Mixing was effective to decrease and widening the temperature range of the $SmAP_R$ phase.

  • In this study, we developed a liquid crystal (LC)-based optical sensor for monitoring enzymatic activity through orientational changes in liquid crystals (LCs) coupled to the properties of a poly-${\small{L}}$-lysine (PLL)-based polymeric membrane. We prepared a PLL-based polymeric membrane at the planar interface between the thermotropic liquid crystal and aqueous phases. The PLL-based polymeric membrane was obtained by contacting the PLL solution with water immiscible LCs, 4-cyano-4'-pentyl-biphenyl (5CB) doped with adipoyl chloride. We then investigated the membrane properties by examining the permeability of the membrane to phospholipids, 1,2-didodecanoyl-rac-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DLPC). The permeability of the membrane to transport phospholipids was monitored through the orientational transition of 5CB in contact with the dispersions of DLPC. Since trypsin can enzymatically catalyze the hydrolysis of PLL, we incubated an aqueous trypsin solution with the membrane for 2 h at room temperature to cause an increase in the permeability of the polymeric membrane to DLPC. As a result, a bright to dark optical shift of LCs was observed, which implied that an enzymatic reaction between trypsin and PLL-based membrane occurred. Two control experiments using chymotrypsin and bovine serum albumin (BSA) revealed no sign of improved permeability based on the orientational transition of LCs.

  • We have studied liquid crystal (LC) molecular alignment on rubbed and photoaligned surfaces. Particular attention was paid to the intermolecular liquid crystalline interaction. We will first show that uniform molecular orientation on a rubbed surface does not mean spatially uniform interaction between the surface and LC molecules. Rather LCs tend to align themselves through LC interaction. The existence of nonuniformity of rubbing was successfully visualized by double surface treatment. The importance of intermolecular LC interaction was also found in the orientation formation process in 5CB evaporated on rubbed and photoaligned surfaces. By simultaneously analyzing polarized UVNIS absorption and second-harmonic generation (SHG) using the maximum entropy method, we succeeded in obtaining the temporal variation of the orientational distribution functions in the film forming process. The distribution anisotropy and pretilt are found to be generated under the influence of intermolecular LC interaction.

  • New polymeric photostabilizers containing hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS) were prepared by the reaction of liquid polyisoprene rubber grafted maleic anhydride (MAH) and 2,2,5,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidinol (TMPO). Their chemical composition and physical properties were characterized by titration, GPC and TGA analysis. The effects of polymeric HALS on the photooxidation of the styrene-butadiene rubber were studied from the UV, IR spectral changes, and photo-crosslinking was examined by the measurement of the insoluble fraction. The photooxidation of SBR upon irradiation was inhibited by addition of the new polymeric HALS. The extraction resistance of new polymeric photostabilizer was much better than that of the low molecular weight compound which is prepared by the reaction of MAH and TMPO. The new polymeric HALS ate fairly compatible with the SBR.

  • The study was executed for development of sensing elements of electronic tongue which could discriminate taste of liquid and semi-liquid foods. Five polymeric membranes which were composed of polymer, plasticizer, electro-active materials were prepared. After each polymeric membranes were mounted in an electrode body, membrane potentials due to electrochemical reaction with taste stimuli were measured. The experimental results were interpreted in view of the membrane's non-selective responses to stimuli.

  • Liquid crystal display (LCD) devices contain a colour filter which can visualise colour images by transmitting or absorbing light. Colour properties of LCD mainly depend on colour materials such as pigments and polymeric binders. In this paper, colour properties were studied to improve colour quality of LCD. Generally, the colour properties can be classified into three categories which are colour purity, brightness and contrast ratio. For this study, photo resists were prepared by treatment of pigments and synthesis of polymeric binder. The treated pigments were dispersed and formulated with additives for preparing a photo resist that could be used for manufacturing colour filters. As a result of what we studied, type, mixture ratio and concentration of pigments were very important to improve colour purity of LCD device.

  • Tripod-shaped liquid crystals with $sp^3$ nigrogen at the apex were prepared from triethanolamine. Their physical properties were investigated by using optical microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and X-ray diffraction measurements. The XRD study suggests that the tripod-shaped molecules show the 2D-ordered phase of either the frustrated smectic layer structure or discotic columnar phases.

  • Here, we report a novel fabrication technique for patchable organic lasing sheet based on non-volatile liquid organic semiconductors and freestanding polymeric film with high flexibility and patchability. For this work, we have fabricated the second-order DFB grating structure, which leads to surface emission, embedded in the freestanding polymeric film. Using an ultra-violet (UV) curable polyurethaneacrylate (PUA) mixture, the periodic DFB grating structure can be easily prepared on the freestanding polymeric film via a simple UV curing process. Due to unsaturated acrylate remained in the PUA mixture after UV curing, the freestanding PUA film provides adhesive properties, which enable mounting of the patchable organic lasing sheet onto non-flat surfaces with conformal contact. To achieve laser actions in the freestanding resonator structure, a composite material of liquid 9-(2-ethylhexyl)carbazole (EHCz) and organic laser dyes was used as the laser medium. Since the degraded active materials can be easily refreshed by a simple injection of the liquid composite, such a non-volatile liquid organic semiconducting medium has degradation-free and recyclable characteristics in addition to other strong advantages including tunable optoelectronic responses, solvent-free processing, and ultimate mechanical flexibility and uniformity. Lasing properties of the patchable organic lasing sheet were also investigated after mounting onto non-flat surfaces, showing a mechanical tunability of laser emission under variable surface curvature. It is anticipated that these results will be applied to the development of various patchable optoelectronic applications for light-emitting displays, sensors and data communications.
