  • It is known that polymer concretes are 8~10 times more expensive than ordinary Portland cement concretes; therefore, in the production of polymer concrete products, it is very important to reduce the amount of polymer binders used because this occupies the most of the production cost of polymer concretes. In order to develop a technology for the reduction of polymer binders, smooth and spherical aggregates were prepared by the atomizing technology using the oxidation process steel slag (electric arc furnace slag, EAFS) and the reduction process steel slag (ladle furnace slag, LFS) generated by steel industries. A reduction in the amount of polymer binders used was expected because of an improvement in the workability of polymer concretes as a result of the ball-bearing effect and maximum filling effect in case the polymer concrete was prepared using the smooth and spherical atomized steel slag instead of the calcium carbonate (filler) and river sand (fine aggregate) that were generally used in polymer concretes. To investigate physical properties of the polymer concrete, specimens of the polymer concrete were prepared with various proportions of polymer binder and replacement ratios of the atomized reduction process steel slag. The results showed that the compressive strengths of the specimens increased gradually along with the higher replacement ratios of the atomized steel slag, but the flexural strength showed a different maximum strength depending on the addition ratio of polymer binders. In the hot water resistance test, the compressive strength, flexural strength, bulk density, and average pore diameter decreased; but the total pore volume and porosity increased. It was found that the polymer concrete developed in this study was able to have a 19% reduction in the amount of polymer binders compared with that of the conventional product because of the remarkable improvement in the workability of polymer concretes using the spherical atomized oxidation steel slag and atomized reduction steel slag instead of the calcium carbonate and river sand.

  • The solidification methods for powder wastes dried at CWDS(Concentrate Waste Drying System) in PWR have been studied in a variety of ways both at home and abroad. The solidification for these wastes has been performed using stabilization agents such as cement, paraffin and polymer. The applicability studies to maximize the reduction ratio of wastes and operational effectiveness for wastes treatment have been carried out, recently. It is necessary to pretreat the powder wastes before feeding wastes to vitrification facility because the fines flying brings about clogging of feeding pipes and off-gas treatment system or workers' exposure to radiation during maintenance. This paper describes an effective method for treatment of powder wastes to improve safety and stability of vitrification facilities.

  • The duties of the restorative materials are to bear up against stress and to protect reinforcement corrosion. So the restorative materials are estimated by various kinds of strength, permeability and etc, But, in case of existing performance evaluation of restorative materials, because various deterioration factors are separately acted, the system of performance evaluation is different from that of combined deterioration of real structure and it is difficult to evaluate the exact performance of restorative materials. In this study, to evaluate Performance of restorative materials, we compare their korea standard properties in terms of compressive and bending strength and permeability of water and air with real durability for carbonation, salt damage and actual reinforcement corrosion like ratio of corrosion area. weight reduction and corrosion velocity of steel bar under environment of combined deterioration. The results showed that strength and permeability of restorative materials are similar but their resistance to carbonation, salt damage and actual reinforcement corrosion are very different.

  • Aggregate resources in Korea are expected to run out owing to an increase in development demand and construction investment. Recycled concrete aggregates (RCA), extracted from waste concrete, have a lower quality than natural aggregates. However, RCA can produce concrete similar in quality to the normal concrete by aggregate pretreatment, use of admixtures, and quality control. RCA are most suitable for use in precast concrete products such as sidewalk blocks and revetment blocks. Herein, the feasibility of producing revetment blocks using recycled aggregate concrete (RAC), similar in quality to normal concrete, was analyzed. The amount of RCA was varied, and moderate high early strength cement and steam curing were used to produce the concrete test blocks. In the block test, the load resistance characteristics of the blocks were evaluated to determine optimal RAC and glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) rebar compositions. Thus, the variable that reduced the cement content was determined at the same level as that of natural aggregate concrete by the control of steam curing. In the concrete block test, although this depends on the reinforcement ratio, the RAC block exhibited the same or better performance than a normal concrete block. Therefore, the low quality of RCA in RAC is no longer a problem when concrete mixing and curing are controlled and appropriate reinforcement is used.

  • In this study, the effect of cyclic wetting-drying on the self-healing of cementitious materials containing superabsorbent polymers (SAPs) were experimentally evaluated. In each cycle, cracked cement paste specimens containing various SAP dosages were exposed to wet conditions for 1 h, during which the capillary water absorption tests and water flow tests were conducted, and then exposed to dry conditions for 47 h. The capillary water absorption test results showed that the sorptivity values of the specimen without SAPs, SAP 0.5%, SAP 1.0%, and SAP 1.5% specimens were decreased by approximately 22.9%, 36.8%, 42.8%, and 46.3%, respectively, after 8 cycles. In addition, the water flow test results showed that the amount of water runoff through the cracks of all cracked specimens gradually decreased over wet/dry cycles, especially the reduction ratio of the amount of water runoff increased with increasing SAP dosage. Furthermore, the swelling behavior of SAPs in cracks by in gress water was con firmed via X-ray computed tomography (CT) analysis. These results indicate that the effective crack width can be reduced as SAPs absorb water and swell, while the water absorbed in SAPs can be released to crack surfaces under dry conditions, further promoting healing product formation. This study demon strates that the in corporation of SAPs can in crease the water tightness of cracks, thereby improving the self-healing efficiency of cementitious materials.

  • In this study, the improved performance of sprayed green soil was evaluated by incorporating functional additives. The optimal mixing ratio of the thickener and super-absorbent polymer, as an additive for moisture supply to the growth of plants within the range of mixing ratios that gives sufficient strength of green soil, was 5% and 1%, respectively. Using Portland cement as a main binder, the pH of the green soil was 9.1. To solve this alkali problem, the mixing proportion was improved so that the pH of the green soil was approximately 7.2 by mixing more than 10% of the chelate resin. The soil conductivity was measured to be 280 ~ 350mS/m under all the mixing conditions. This satisfied the criterion of less than 1000mS/m on the slope surface. As a result of measuring the soil hardness of the green soil prepared under the optimal mixing conditions of functional additives, it satisfied the criteria of 18 ~ 23mm when sprayed under a 1 bar pressure. The rebound rate was less than 15% when spraying green soil on a 75 % slope, and the hardness of the sprayed green soil was more than 18 mm.
