  • Polypropylene(PP)/carbon fiber(CF)/multi-walled carbon nanotube(MWCNT) nanocomposites along with various CF and MWCNT contents were prepared in a Twin screw extruder. Electrical, mechanical property and morphology were investigated with a variation of CF and MWCNT contents. From the surface resistance of PP/CF/MWCNT composites, MWCNT can increase the conductivity of composites compared with PP/CF composites without MWCNT. It is suggested that MWCNT and CF can make the conductive network in the polymer matrix. Flexural modulus and Izod impact strength of the PP/CF/MWCNT composites were improved with the increase of CF contents. Morphology showed that length of CF in polymer matrix was shortened by torque during melt mixing with MWCNT. As a result of this phenomenon, the impact strength of composites was somewhat decreased.

  • In this study, low density polyethylene/organo-clay nanocomposites were prepared by melt blending. Thermal property, structure, and morphology of the LDPE/organo-clay nanocomposites were investigated. When the composition ratios of the compounds of LDPE/PE-g-MA/organo-clay were 90/10/1~10 (w/w/w), X-ray diffractograms of LDPE/organo-clay nanocomposites revealed that the intercalation of polymer chains lead to increase the spacing between clay layers. TEM microphotographs showed that LDPE was intercalated into organo-clay. TGA performed under air atmosphere demonstrated a great increase in thermal stability of the LDPE/organo-clay nanocomposties. The maximum decomposition temperature of LDPE/organo-clay nanocomposite was increased about $80^{\circ}C$ compared with pure LDPE. When the organo-clay contents were 1.0~5.0 wt%, the LOI values were increased with increasing the organo-clay content, but in the case of the contents more than 5.0 wt%, the LOI values were not increased any more.

  • Polypropylene-clay nanocomposites were studied by the modification of clay with amino silanes to introduce covalent bonds in nanocomposites, and prepared by melt-compounding with polypropylene, clay modified with amino silanes and maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene. The . .structure and surface properties of modified clay were determined by x-ray diffraction, infrared spectrum, and solid-state $^{29}Si$ nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum. The modification of clay with aminosilanes led to the increase of the silicate interlayers to about $19.8{\AA}$, the weakening effects of hydroxy group at $3650cm^{-1}$ and the signal of amine groups at -69 ppm proved that the modification had taken place.

  • Polypropylene (PP)/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were prepared by melt mixing methods. MMT modified by dimethyl hydrogenated tallow 2-ethylhexyl ammonium (Cloisite 15A) was used. Polyolefine oligomer with telechelic OH groups was used as a compatibilizer. The degree of dispersion of MMT in the nanocomposites was measured by X-ray diffractometer and transmission electron microscope (TEM) images. MMT was well exfoliated when the contents of compatibilizer was 25 phr. The thermal stability that observed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) increased with the contents of MMT increased up to 5 phr. The complex viscosities and storage moduli of PP nanocomposites enhanced as the contents of compatibilizer decreased and those of MMT increased.

  • The preparation of organophilic clay from Na$^{+}$-MMT was achieved by intercalation of alkylammonium bromide. The dispersed organophilic clay in NMP was then added to the solution of polyamic acids (BPDA-PPD, BTDA-ODA/ MPD) in NMP. After curing at 30$0^{\circ}C$, thin films of the polyimide/clay nanocomposite were prepared. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) shelved that the d-spacings of dried polyamic acid (PAA)-clay complexes increased in proportion to the chain length of the onium ion and patterns of two kinds of PAA-clay complexes were similar. The d-spacings of approximately 13.2 $\AA$ for the polyimide/clay nanocomposites were independent of the initial onium ion chain length and the species of PAA. From the study of XRD and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), we found layered silicates were dispersed in polyimide matrix and the resultants were intercalated nanocomposites. TGA result showed thermal stability of polyimide nanocomposite improved a little more than the pure polyimide. From the result of dynamic mechanical property, we found that the storage modulus of the nanocomposites had increased by 1.2-1.8 times of the pure polyimides.s.

  • Nondestructive damage sensitivity of carbon nanotube(CNT) and nanofiber (CNF)/epoxy composites with their adding contents was investigated using electro-micromechanical technique. Carbon black (CB) was used only for the comparison with CNT and CNF. The fracture of carbon fiber was detected by acoustic emission (AE), which was correlated to the change in electrical resistance, ΔR under double-matrix composites (DMC) test. Stress sensing on carbon nanocomposites was performed by electro-pullout test under uniform cyclic loading. At the same volume fraction, the damage sensitivity for fiber fracture, matrix deformation and stress sensing were highest for CNT/epoxy composite, whereas for CB/epoxy composite they were the lowest among three carbon nanomaterials (CNMs). Damage sensitivity was correlated with morphological observation of carbon nanocomposites. Homogeneous dispersion among CNMs could be keying parameters for better damage monitoring. In this study, damage sensing of carbon nanocomposites could be evaluated well nondestructively by the electrical resistance measurement with AE.

  • N,N-dimethyldodecylamine (tertiary amine)-modified MMT (DDA-MMT) was prepared as an organically modified layered silicate (OLS), after which styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) nanocomposites reinforced with the OLS were manufactured via the latex method. The layer distance of the OLS and the morphology of the nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). By increasing the amount of N,N-dimethyldodecylamine (DDA) up to 2.5 g, the maximum values of torque, tensile strength and wear resistance of the SBR nanocomposites were increased due to the increased dispersion of the silicate layers in the rubber matrix and the increased crosslinking of the SBR nanocomposites by DDA itself. When SBR nanocomposites were manufactured by using the ternary filler system (carbon black/silica/OLS) to improve their dynamic properties as a tire tread compound, the tan $\delta$(at $0^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$) property of the compounds was improved by using metal stearates instead of stearic acid. The mechanical properties and wear resistance were increased by direct substitution of calcium stearate for stearic acid because the filler-rubber interaction was increased by the strong ionic effect between the calcium cation and silicates with anionic surface. However, as the amount of calcium stearate was further increased above 0.5 phr, the mechanical properties and wear resistance were degraded due to the lubrication effect of the excessive amount of calcium stearate. Consequently, the SBR/organoclay nanocomposites that used carbon black, silica, and organoclay as their ternary filler system showed excellent dynamic properties, mechanical properties and wear resistance as a tire tread compound for passenger cars when 0.5 phr of calcium stearate was substituted for the conventionally used stearic acid.
