$SiC_f$/SiC composites were prepared using the hybrid process of chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) and polymer impregnation and pyrolysis (PIP). Before the application of PIP, partially matrix-filled preform composites with different densities were fabricated by control of chemical vapor infiltration time and temperature. The changes of the final density of the $SiC_f$/SiC composites had a tendency similar to that of preform composites partially filled by CVI. Composites with lower density after the CVI process had a larger increment of density during the PIP process. Three types of microstructures were observed on the fractured surface of the composite: 1) well pulled-out fibers and lower density, 2) slightly pulled-out fibers and higher density, and 3) only bulk SiC. The different fractions and distributions of the microstructures could have an effect on the mechanical properties of the composites. In this study, $SiC_f$/SiC composites prepared using a hybrid process of CVI and PIP had density values in the range of $1.05{\sim}1.44g/cm^3$, tensile strength values in the range of 76.4 ~ 130.7 MPa, and fracture toughness values in the range of $11.2{\sim}13.5MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$.
Waterborne polyurethanes (WPUs) based on isophorone diisocyanate and mixed polyols of poly(tetramethylene glycol) (PTMG)/polycarbonate diol (PCD) were synthesized. The variation of mechanical and dyeing properties and alkali resistance of the WPU films were analyzed according to the polycarbonate (PC) content. The tensile strength of the films increased and the elongation at break decreased with the PC content in the WPU film. The incorporation of PC component in the WPU film did not affect the alkaline hydrolysis behavior. The synthesized WPU solutions were used as impregnating resins for the production of PET artificial leathers. The prepared WPU resins showed the good color fastness to washing, rubbing, and light of the artificial leather fabrics. The improvement of the properties became greater with the PC content in the WPU resin.

Solid polymer electrolyte(SPE) membrane with electrodes embedded on both faces offer unique possibilities for the electrochemical cells like water electrolyzer with fuel cell. The Nafion 117 membrane was used as the SPE, and $Pt(NH_3)_4Cl_2$ and $NaBH_4$ as the electrocatalysts and reducing agent, respectively. The 'impregnation-reduction(I-R) method' has been investigated as a tool for the preparation of electrocatalysts for water electrolyzer by varying the concentration of reducing agent and reduction time at fixed concentration of platinum salt, 5 mmol/L. Pt-SPE electrocatalysts prepared by non-equilibrium I-R method showed the lowest cell voltage of 2.17 V at reduction time, 90 min and with concentration of reducing agent 0.8 mol/L and the cell voltage with those by equilibrium I-R method was 2.42 V at reduction time, 60 min and with concentration of reducing agent 0.8 mol/L. The cell voltage were obtained at a current density $1\;A/cm^2$ and $80^{\circ}C$. In water electrolysis, hydrogen production efficiency by Pt-SPE electrocatalyst is 68.2% in case of non-equilibrium I-R method and 61.2% at equilibrium I-R method.

Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) supports and amine additives were investigated to adsorb $CO_2$. PMMA supports were fabricated by using different ratio of pore forming agents (porogen) to control the BET specific surface area, pore volume and distribution. Toluene and xylene are used for porogens. Supported amine sorbents were prepared by wet impregnation of tetraethylenepentamine (TEPA) on PMMA supports. So we could identify the effect of the pore structure of supports and the quantity of impregnated TEPA on the adsorption capacity. The increased amount of toluene as pore foaming agent resulted in the decreased average pore diameter and the increased BET surface area. Polymer supports with huge different pore distribution could be fabricated by controlling the ratio of porogen. After impregnation, the support with micropore structure is supposed the pore blocking and filling effect so that it has low $CO_2$ capacity and kinetics due to the difficulty of diffusing. Macropore structure indicates fast adsorption capacity and low influence of amine loading. In case of support with mesopore, it has high performance of adsorption capacity and kinetics. So high surface area and meso-/macro- pore structure is suitable for $CO_2$ capture.
Uniform and well dispersed metal sulfide semiconductor nanoparticles incorporated into matrices of alginate biopolymer are prepared by using a facile in situ method. The reaction was accomplished by impregnation of alginate with divalent metal ions followed by reaction with thioacetamide. XRD analysis showed that the nanoparticles incorporated in the polymer matrix were of cubic structure with the average particle diameter of 1.8 to 4.8 nm. Field emission scanning electron microscopy and high resolution transmission electron microscopy images indicated that the particles were well dispersed and distributed uniformly in the matrices of alginate polymer. FT-IR spectra confirmed the presence of alginate in the nanocomposite. The crystalline nature and thermal stability of the alginate polymer was found to be influenced by the nature of the divalent metal ions used for the synthesis. The proposed method is considered to be a simple and greener approach for large scale synthesis of uniform sized nanoparticles.
A conductive poly(acrylonitrile)/polypyrrole composite fabric was prepared. A conductive composite was prepared by the impregnation of PAN fabric into a mixed solution of pyrrole and oxidant in order to induce the in-situ polymerization of a conducting polymer into the matrix fabric. In the composite formation, the reaction condition was optimized to achieve the best properties, and the effect of the externally-added arylsulfonate dopants on the physical properties was examined. As a result, the best properties of electrical conductivity, thermal stability, and fastness to washing, was observed in the composite containing an antraquinonesulfonate (AQSA) dopant.
Polysulfone membranes containing an inorganic fluor, cerium activated yttrium silicate (CA Y5), were prepared via the phase inversion technique. The casting solutions with the fluor' were solidified to result in a membrane by using two different nonsolvent coagulants, water and isopropanol. In the process, the fluor worked as a monitioring agent for investigating the characteristics of the phase inversiun process. On the initial contact with water as nonsolvent, the induction of rapid polymer collapse results.in the entrapment of the fluor in the formed membrane structure. Impregnated fluor is dispersed in the polymer structure rather than being enveloped by polymer molecules. In comparison, the fluor is localized in the cell-like structure of membrane, as the cast solution film is cuagulated by immersion into a isopropanol bath.
The factors that influence ablation resistance in fiber composites are properties of the reinforced fiber and matrix, plugging quantity of fiber, geometrical arrangement, crack, pore size, and their distributions. To examine ablation resistance according to distribution of crack and pore size that exist in carbon/carbon composites, this study produced various sizes of unit cells of preforms. They were densified using high pressure impregnation and carbonization process. Reinforced fiber is PAN based carbon fiber and composites were heat-treated up to $2800^{\circ}C$. The finally acquired density of carbon/carbon composites reached more than $1.932\;g/cm^3$. The ablation test was performed by a solid propellant rocket engine. The erosion rate of samples is below 0.0286 mm/s. In conclusion, in terms of ablation properties, the higher degree of graphitization is, the more fibers that are arranged vertically to the direction of combustion flame are, and the less interface between reinforced fiber bundle and matrix is, the better ablation resistance is shown.

[ $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+},\;Dy^{3+}$ ] phosphor was synthesized using the impregnation method, and its photoluminescence and long-afterglow properties were investigated, A mixture of $Sr(NO_3)_2,\;Al(NO_3)_2\;9H_2O,\;EuCl_3\;6H_2O,\;DyCl_3\;6H_2O,\;NdCl_3\;6H_2O$ salts were dissolved in distilled water and impregnating into the polymer precursor. After drying, the impregnated mixture was heat treated at $900-1400^{\circ}C$ for 2h in a $N_2-H_2$ reduction atmosphere. The microstructure and crystal structure of the $SrAl_2O_4:Eu^{2+},\;Dy^{3+}$ powders were examined by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction, respectively. The photoluminescence spectra showed an excitation band along over wide wavelength of 250-450nm, and a broaden emission with a maxima peak at 360nm. In addition, the spectra also showed a good long after glow that decayed over a 1000sec period after 10 min excitation illumination.
Ionic polymer metal composites (IPMC) are soft polymeric smart materials having large displacement at low voltage in air and water. The polymeric electrolyte actuator consists of a thin and porous membrane and metal electrodes plated on both faces, in impregnation electro-plating method. The response and actuation of actuator are governed. Among many factors governing the activation and response of IPMC actuator, the surface electrode plays an important role. In this study, the well-designed modification of electrode surface was carried out in order to improve the chemical stability well as electromechanical characteristics of the IPMC actuator. We employed Ion Beam Assisted Deposition (IBAD) method to prepare the topologically homogeneous thin surface electrode. After roughing the surface of Nafion membrane in order to get a larger surface area, the IPMC was prepared by impregnation for electro-plating and re- coating on the surface through traditional chemical deposition, followed by an additional surface treatment with high conductive metals with IBAD. It was observed that our IPMC specimen shows the enhanced surface electrical properties as well as the improved actuation and response characteristics under applied electric field.
