대면적 고분자전해질 연료전지의 데드엔드 운전 (Dead-end Mode Operation of a Large Scale PEM Fuel Cell Stack)

  • A Dead-end mode operation is one of the best way to maximize the gas usage rate. But, some components of fuel cell stack like gas diffusion layer(GDL) or membrane can be damaged in dead-end mode operation. In this study, a Large Scale Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) for a dead-end operation has been developed. The stack is composed with 4 cells which has over 400cm2 of active area. Hydrogen is used as a fuel, and oxygen is used as a oxidant. The dead-end operation performance was evaluated by a long-term dead-end mode operation. The fuel cell stack is operated over 1,500 hours in dead-end mode operating fuel cell test station. And the performance change of the fuel cell stack was investigated.

Electrospun $SiO_2$ membrane using covalently cross-linked SPEEK/HPA by impregnation for high temperature PEMFC

  • There is widespread effort to develop polymer membranes in place of Nafion for high temperature polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell(PEMFC). In our study, SiO2 membranes are arranged by electrospinning method. For impregnation solution, the modified sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone)(SPEEK) polymer is prepared from sulfonation, sulfochlorination, partial reduction and lithiation reaction. The modified polymer is cross-linked with 1,4-diiodobetane in NMP solvent and then blended with Heteropoly acid(HPA). The characterization of membranes is confimed by FT-IR, Thermogravimetry(TGA), water uptake test and single cell performance test for PEMFC, etc. The composite membrane shows satisfactory thermal and mechanical properties. Beside, The membrane exhibits good ion exchange capacity and high proton conductivity. As a result, The composite membrane is promising as an alternative membrane in high temperature PEMFC.

다중벽 탄소 나노 튜브에 담지한 PtxM(1-x)(M = Co, Cu, Ni) 합금촉매의 제조 및 고분자 전해질 연료전지에서 산소환원 특성 (Synthesis and Oxygen Reduction Reaction Characteristics of Multi-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Supported PtxM(1-x) (M = Co, Cu, Ni) Alloy Catalysts for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell)

  • The electrocatalytic characteristics of oxygen reduction reaction of the $PtxM_{(1-x)}$ (M = Co, Cu, Ni) supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) have been evaluated in a Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell (PEMFC). The $Pt_xM_{(1-x)}$/MWNTs catalysts with a Pt : M atomic ratio of about 3 : 1 were synthesized and applied to the cathode of PEMFC. The crystalline structure and morphology images of the $Pt_xM_{(1-x)}$ particles were characterized by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, respectively. The results showed that the crystalline structure of the Pt alloy particles in Pt/MWNTs and $Pt_xM_{(1-x)}$/MWNTs catalysts are seen as FCC, and synthesized $Pt_xM_{(1-x)}$ crystals have lattice parameters smaller than the pure Pt crystal. According to the electrochemical surface area (ESA) calculated with cyclic voltammetry analysis, $Pt_{0.77}Co_{0.23}$/MWNTs catalyst has higher ESA than the other catalysts. The evaluation of a unit cell test using Pt/MWNTs or $Pt_xM_{(1-x)}$/MWNTs as the cathode catalysts demonstrated higher cell performance than did a commercial Pt/C catalyst. Among the MWNTs-supported Pt and $Pt_xM_{(1-x)}$ (M = Co, Cu, Ni) catalysts, the $Pt_{0.77}Co_{0.23}$/MWNTs shows the highest performance with the cathode catalyst of PEMFC because they had the largest ESA.

고분자 전해질 연료전지에서 고분자막의 화학적 가속 내구 시간 예측 (Prediction of Chemical Acceleration Durability Time of Polymer Membrane in Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells)

  • 고분자 전해질 연료전지(Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, PEMFC) 고분자막의 내구성 향상을 위해서 빠른 시간에 내구성을 평가할 수 있는 가속 내구 평가법들이 연구 개발되었다. 그러나 트럭, 버스 등 대형 상용차용 연료전지 수명은 승용차보다 3배 이상 요구되어 화학적 가속 내구 평가(Accelerated stress test, AST) 시간도 길어져서 1,500 시간 이상이 되었다. 그래서 본 연구에서는 단 시간내에 고분자막의 화학적 내구성을 평가하기 위한 방법으로 막 초기 특성으로 내구성을 예측할 수 있을지 검토하였다. 초기 특성으로 수소투과전류밀도(Hydrogen crossover current density, HCCD)와 단락 저항(Short resistance, SR)을 그리고 3시간의 셀 밖 실험으로 가능한 Fenton 실험을 통해 AST 시간을 예측하였다. HCCD와 불소 이온 유출 농도가 증가하면 AST 시간이 선형적으로 짧아지는 경향을 보였으나 편차가 있었다(R2 ≒0.65). SR이 감소하면 AST 시간이 선형적으로 증가하는 상관관계를 보였으며 정확도가 높아(R2 =0.93) 고분 자막 초기 SR로 AST 시간을 예측할 수 있었다.

  • This study focuses on a determination of amount of Pt in the Pt/C for catalysts of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC). PEMFC offer low weight and high power density and being considered for automotive and stationary power applications. The PEMFC performance is influenced by several factors, including catalysts and structure of electrode and membrane type. Catalyst of electrode is important factor for PEMFC. One of the obstacles prevent ing polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells from commercialization is the high cost of noble metals to be used as catalyst, such as platinum To effectively use these metals, they have to be will dispersed to small particles on conductive carbon supports. The optimal amount of Pt in Pt/C for cathode catalyst was investigated by using polarization curves in single cell with $H_2/O_2$ operation.

Highly Sulfonated Poly(Arylene Biphenylsulfone Ketone) Block Copolymers Prepared via Post-Sulfonation for Proton Conducting Electrolyte Membranes

  • A series of the block copolymers were successfully synthesized from post-sulfonated hydrophilic and hydrophobic macromers via three-step copolymerization. The degrees of sulfonation (DS) of the copolymers (10%, 30%, or 50%) were controlled by changing the molar ratio of the hydrophilic and hydrophobic parts. The resulting block copolymers were characterized by $^1H$ NMR and other technologies. The membranes were successfully cast using dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) solution at $100^{\circ}C$. The copolymers were characterized to confirm chemical structure by $^1H$ NMR and FT-IR. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) demonstrated that all sulfonated block copolymers exhibited good thermal stability with an initial weight loss at temperatures above $240^{\circ}C$. The membranes showed acceptable ion exchange capacity (IEC) and water uptake values in accordance with DS. The maximum proton conductivity was 184 mS $cm^{-1}$ in block copolymer-50 at $60^{\circ}C$ and 100% relative humidity, while the conductivity of Nifion-115 was 160 mS $cm^{-1}$ under the same measurement conditions. AFM images of the block copolymer membranes showed well separated the hydrophilic and hydrophobic domains. From the observed results it is that the prepared block membranes can be considered as suitable polymer electrolyte membranes for the application of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC).

산화방지 작용기를 함유한 산화 그래핀이 도입된 과불소화계 복합 막의 고분자 전해질 막 연료전지로의 응용 (Perfluorosulfonic Acid Composite Membranes Containing Antioxidant Grafted Graphene Oxide for Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cell Applications)

  • 본 연구에서는 산화 방지 특성이 있는 가리워진 아민기를 함유한 산화 그래핀(hindered amine grafted graphene oxide, HA-GO)을 합성하여 이를 도입한 나피온(Nafion) 기반의 복합 막을 제조한 후 고분자 전해질 막 연료전지 시스템에 응용하였다. HA-GO는 4-아미노-2, 2, 6, 6-테트라메틸-4-피페리딘(4-amino-2, 2, 6, 6-tetramethyl piperidine)에 존재하는 아민기와 GO 표면에 존재하는 에폭시기의 개환 반응을 통해 제조하였으며, 합성된 HA-GO의 함량을 달리한 복합 막을 제조하여 순수 Nafion 막과 성능 특성을 비교하였다. HA-GO가 첨가된 복합 막은 Nafion 단일 막에 비해 기계적 물성, 화학적 안정성 및 수소이온 전도 특성이 향상되었다. 특히 HA-GO의 산화 방지 특성으로 인해 HA-GO가 첨가된 복합 막은 펜톤 평가(Fenton's test) 이후 수소이온 전도도의 유지 특성이 Nafion 단일 막에 비해 큰 폭으로 향상된 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

연료전지용 MXenes의 등장 (Emergence of MXenes for Fuel Cell)

  • Recently, 2D materials greatly impact in the various applications especially in the energy conversion and storage devices. Among the 2D materials, nowadays researchers are showing their propensity towards the MXenes due to their potential structural and physical properties as well as their use in various applications. Recently, MXenes have been used as filler in polymer electrolytes membranes and as catalytic support to increase the performance of fuel cells (FCs). But this review covers only recent progress and application of MXenes in proton and anion exchange membranes for FCs. Also, this review will provide a significant guidance and broad overview for future research in MXenes based polymer electrolyte membrane for FCs.
